This is a test of a pm2.5 filter against particulate pollution created by an outdoor BBQ. The filter is functionally equivalent to NIOSH N95 standards, and is used as an insert into a cotton anti-pollution masks.
After almost 20 tests, including control tests without the mask, the average filtration rate for the mask/filter system was 90%, squarely within our target range. This shows about 5% escaped particulate mass duer to the N95 filter, and about 5% due to the mask itself. Either way, it’s more than adequate to reduce most ambient outdoor pollution to a healthy level.
Here’s some of the data:

This experiment concluded that air pollution masks can be helpful for filtering a critical mass of particulate pollution, including pollution caused by organic combustion, when used with a well-fitted respirator mask.

Over the last couple of years, wildfire smoke has gotten pretty bad in Seattle, and much worse in California. On some days the air quality has been bad enough that even healthy adults should stay inside or wear a mask, and even more so for children and older adults. One day I thought I was having a heart attack when I got to work, only to realize it was the air pollution.
Besides the fundamental issue of wildfire management, there are two problems that needed solving to protect people on a day-to-day basis. First, no one should rely on side effects to tell them the air is unhealthy to breathe. Second, last year pollution masks and high-grade n95 filters were unavailable to millions of people who needed them during the fires in the summer and fall.
Puraka developed a service that tries to address both problems. If a pollution mask is needed based on the local air quality and your unique health and age combination, a monitoring algorithm sends you a text message to let you know. More importantly, the algorithm also keeps track of how many n95 filters you're using, and a fulfillment service mails you new ones automatically, as needed, so nobody has to worry about being caught unprepared.

Indices are imperfect as a reference for a specific location, but they are a great way to compare locations. One of the interesting things about this dataset is visually associating cities you wouldn’t otherwise associate, based on similar rent levels.
