Droppin’ a little “making of” for the Affection!!! comic!

concept sketch > rough sketch > clean-ish sketch

Ramblings under the cut:

1. Mikey’s line in the concept sketch was originally different! I changed it to “On it!” because I wanted the whole comic to read snappier (and I’m pretty sure it’s a line the boys have used on the show when they’re teamworking). This sketch was probably done in under 10mins because of how scribbly everything is. Maybe even just 5mins.

When I look at it, I can still feel past!Anabelle desperately trying to convey “These lines are Leo’s arms and they are wide open in panel 2, okay future!Anabelle??” - I spend months at a time focused on gesture drawing practice but it always feels like I forget everything when I have an idea I want to draw out. :’) But then again, so long as the concept sketch conveys the information you need it to, then it’s doing its job, right? Let it look stupid. It’s fun to laugh at afterwards anyway.

2. Rough sketch! This is where I decided I wanted to push Leo’s dramatics, to see if I could capture some of the fun expressions we’ve seen on the show. I messed with the panel layout for quite a bit because having them static like in the sketch wasn’t bringing in the energy I wanted (also thought it was funny to have panels tilted like that because they look similar to the top of Leo’s head).

3. This clean-ish sketch served as my base for the lineart. Sometimes I do one more pass on the sketch just to make sure the character proportions and important stuff are in order, but I was really itching to clean this one up.

Every time I get to the lineart stage for a Rise fanart, I’m always looking to see how closely I can mimic the style of the show while maintaining the liveliness of my sketches. I’ve never thought about it in depth before but I guess I approach it like a master study. I’m not always like this with fanart but the art on Rise is kinda special to me and figuring out how to ape it brings me joy.

Other fun facts:

CSP’s text editor functions aren’t that advanced (in Pro v1 anyway, which is what I use) so I had to manually adjust each character in both “Miguel!” and “Affection!!!” to get them to curve that nicely. No pain no gain, amirite? Lucky this comic isn’t that dialogue heavy, haha.

I’ve been alternating between two brushes for my linework - a smooth one and a gritty/pencil-like one. I actually used the latter for this comic but I guess I must have messed with the brush density at some point because you can’t really see the texture in the lines. Oops?

Drew this back in January, when the idea popped into my brain and wouldn’t leave me alone. I don’t always love the initial draft of the things I make but this scribbly ridiculousness has a special place in my heart.

Process pics under the cut!

Fun fact - I did the lineart for this one traditionally back in March-ish and forgot about it... until earlier this week!

Thought it’d be fun to share because I did serveral versions of this drawing... also traditionally! It was fun to rediscover that you can create multiple copies of a thing without the aid of a computer - in my case, I used a makeshift lightbox.

The duplicates are not as accurate as they would be if I’d duplicated a layer on an art program but hey, I kinda like the subtle differences.

Spot the differences between 2 and 3, haha. I wasn’t intending to go beyond inking practice, but the arm and mic placement was really bugging me even though I kept trying to convince myself that I was too lazy to fix it. As you can see with 3, my inner critic’s nagging won out. The fix was also done traditionally, and I decided to leave off the hatching in case I wanted to use it for coloring practice.

Here’s the version without the dramatic lighting. I like it better, personally, but you know. Gotta give Leo his spotlight.

Expressions exploration for Lucky -  the full version of her concept art (upper left corner) is in this post. My keywords for her design are stress ball and cinnamon roll.

The original sketches for these expressions were drawn ages ago; I stumbled upon them recently and thought they’d make a fun, easy clean up exercise in between projects.

Introducing: ☀️ Sun says Moon says 🌙 My big personal project of the moment is a loose retelling of The Sun and The Moon, a Philippine folktale, in comic form. I pulled together enough art to justify an official page for it on my website - which, in this day and age, means I might as well share it everywhere else too.

The first image is some concept art partially inspired by old maps, featuring my main characters and some story-relevant visuals. The next two are cleaned up sample pages (in lineart stage, dialogue/text removed) that were included when I pitched it for a grant. I'm still very much in the story development phase at the moment, so I won't be surprised if these pages don't make it to the final. Currently chipping away at the second draft (clocking in at 45pgs) and concept art in my free time. Timeframe to finish is... well, here's hoping by end of year. For now, please enjoy the art!

1 & 6 comes with an implied “and also all of them”

2 & 3 aren’t set in stone because there are drawing days where a turtle is easy to draw and there are drawing days where they give me hell.

4... honestly? I get the same or an even worse level of quality on my Bad Drawing Days. Maybe I should draw with my offhand more. I noticed that I draw lighter with it, which is probably good for the health of my tablet screen.

5 also doubles as my favorite Splinter line. That squeak of a gasp Eric Bauza gets in is so funny.

(Yes, I drew these panels the way I did to get all the initial members of clan hamato in. It’s the rule of anatawa hitorijanai; I cannot draw them alone. The set must be complete for my soul to be at rest.)

Slowly but surely making progress - though I’m not sure when the next update will be because I have some bigger projects on my plate atm. Hitting pause on this one for now. (and trying to focus on “hey I like this thing I drew” instead of listening to my traitor brain pointing out things it wants me to fix)

“You mean run away?” she says, like the option is unfortunate and not, sometimes, the only thing that keeps you alive.

“Strategic retreat,” Casey says, firmly. He remembers sitting on the steps of the Met with April. “You can always come back, too.”

This seems to strike the right balance. Casey takes a deep breath, squares her shoulders, and strides up to the door.

Putting them all together like this makes me obscenely happy. :) Added some rough highlights and shadows to liven things up a little.

My concept for this while I was drawing it (because I kind of have story ideas floating around in my head even for plain old pinups) was that half the group’s heading topside on a shopping trip while the other half’s holding the fort down at the Lair. Damn, now I’m regretting not drawing Sunita to even out both the groupings...
