#Repost @modarchitecture one man in the case Joe Eichler can make a big difference with some effort. ・・・ Eichler Homes were revolutionary- not just for their designs but for their racial policies. In 1950, a law was passed prohibiting the FHA from providing loans to Black people. Not only that, but any homebuilder who assisted a Black buyer from obtaining a loan or even purchasing a home in their development risked losing their FHA funding for the entire tract. But Joe Eichler fought this and lobbied Washington to get the law changed. He also found loopholes and other ways to enable African-Americans to buy homes in his developments, despite the risk. In one famous episode, Eichler sold a home to a Black doctor and his family in Terra Linda. The neighbors started to protest and Eichler went door-to-door personally to each homeowner to confront them, and even offered to buy back their homes. Within a year, every single person there had come around and were supportive. Yep it is time to bury some of the monuments @nicholasgalanin projects a strong image with his burial piece. His project is for Australia but the timing is perfect as many of the confederate monuments are tumbling down in the United States. Statues and monuments to those that fought and lost the civil war to continue slavery should be buried. One hateful statue down and many more to go. ・・・ Pedestal, 18x24”, aerosol on canvas - I got up at sunrise the morning after the first protests to shoot the monuments, convinced the city would pressure wash them as they do every time someone has sprayed them in the past. I started to work immediately on this painting. I had Lee included in it on top, the stencils all do. Once I heard the announcment that Lee would be coming down however I knew he should come off the painting as well- just as he did in @noahscalin 's great version a few years back. Anyone in Richmond has felt that we are living in a historical moment right now, this is just my short reflection of that. Many of you have asked if I will sell prints of this. I would love to, with proceeds going to good local causes of course. The stencils are so delicate however I can only do a few sprays before they will degrade, so I propose the following: I will sell up to 10 of the original sprays on canvas, for $500 each. Then take the proceeds from that to fund a larger run of silk-screened prints which I would hope to sell for $100 or less. Ideally $50. All remaining profits going to a TBD group, and potentially a mural related to all this. If you are interested in one of the 10 originals, let me know.
