You know who's insanely difficult to write? Post-knighting, pre-Betrayal Barriss. (I have been thinking about Pass the Existential Dilemma, Would You? again.)

She is so deliciously complicated but in a way that's. So hard to write. She is STRUGGLING and she is ANGRY and she is trying to figure herself out. She has problems but she hasn't Fallen yet. It is Painful to write because she is. A Many-Sided Blorbo.

I wish I saw more fics with a post-recovery Barriss who's come back from the Dark.

Someone on discord asked me to explain why it's complicated (saying they didn't know much about Barriss) and oh boy do I have some thoughts.

So we know that Barriss eventually succumbs to the pain and cynicism of war, and turns her back on the Jedi in a violent and unstable fashion because she can't cope. Prior to this, she's characterized as a very eager, genuine, polite, somewhat nervous young lady who greatly respects her Master and is very skilled at things like memorizing complex routes and with something of a healing specialty.

She's sweet and sincere and very keen on proving herself as a padawan.

And then she's knighted.

Without the support of her master, and being more fully thrust into the war, she crumbles and Falls.

There are a whole lot of parallels to Anakin in some ways, but Barriss has a significantly more sheltered upbringing, and her master was far less prone to Danger Missions than Obi-Wan.

So Barriss went from the kind of pressure and trauma one can associate with, say, standard relief work as a medical trainee (spitballing here) to full on war and battle. Massive shock to the system at an age where she's already prone to hormonal instability because everyone is.

I want to get into her headspace in that time between getting knighted (separated from her main support pillar) and Falling to the dark side (mental break and then framing a close friend for terrorism).

She's struggling with her faith, her job, her family, her own independence. She hasn't LOST herself to the sheer pain and horror yet. There's still a chance to pull her back. She's teetering.

But that place, as interesting as it is, is a NIGHTMARE to write.

I haven't seen the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon in years and I watched Illum scene, and I forgot that Luminara and Barriss didn't have British accents in that show so I got caught completely off guard
