I refuse to participate in a survey which lumps anybody over the age of 40, or 50 or above whatever the threshold for 'who cares about those people' into one big chunk of 'they don't exist anyway' or, worse, 'what are they doing in fandom. Let's kick them out .'
It happens all the time, including from academic research in fandom, and it is annoying, frustrating and plain discriminatory.
Reblog for a larger sample size!
No "show results", if you're not a fanfic writer just be patient.
I saw a post about an anon saying it was embarrasing to have an ao3 account in your 30s (it's absolutely not), so I want to do a poll and see what the age range actually is.

Yeah! Such a great resource. I have done something similar, available from AO3: Star Trek Voyager Episode Timeline.
The episode dates are re-arranged by date of events rather than dates of airtimewhere the two don't conincide. The pdf or excel files can be downloaded.
Anyone want a complete (I hope) list of all of Voyager's Stardates?
Also includes dates for "Year of Hell".
Earth dates calculated using This Converter.

One Genius Is Enough
Sometimes, Rossi wonders about the intelligence of two of his co-workers.
An AO3 fanfic, because I seem to have fallen into the very large hole that is Criminal Minds.

That scene is so typically Hotch. He does not want to fight, he just know he needs to stop the guy because of Reid. So he insults the guy, makes sure his attention is on him, not on Reid, appeals to the guy's ego by beating his own chest. But, he does not follow through once Reid intervenes. He lets Reid defuse the situation because that what he wants.
If Hotch had been a normal so-called alpha male, he would have pushed Reid away and got into a fist fight to continue to 'protect' Reid. But he never lets his own ego control his moves. That's why we don't see a fight. He looks at the implications and consequences of his actions at all times. Not letting the guy control the situation is one. Being a team player is another. Reid is protecting Hotch too, and Hotch let him play because Hotch does not use violence as a way to show his superiority. He disappears in the background, like Reid did at first, and is there as a backup.
They both play the guy, as a team, and they both trust each other.
It is a very interesting scene, which shows how well the writers understood Hotch's MO is so different from (too) many cop shows.
THE JACKET??? THE TIE??? THE POINTING??? HIM ACKNOWLEDGING HIS SIZE???!!!!

She calls him 'sir'....
I love that in SG-1 everyone pretty much just says what they want all the time, regardless of any kind of chain of command, but Carter catches herself once in a while and adds a careful, belated "Sir," as an afterthought 😂

Can I interest you to close to 16,000 Voyager fics on AO3?
I'm ... done with Voyager ... I ... what am I going to do now?
Six weeks to the day. I didn't expect for it to grab me like this. I didn't think I'd binge through so quickly, faster than any Trek show since TOS back in 2016.
Also ... I don't hate the ending. Yes yes I know, it's SO short and I too would have LOVED to see them actually arrive etc. but tbh? I don't think after all this time of imagining their return reality would have held up.
I'm not sure half an episode of homecoming would have been satisfying? Aaaaaggghhh idk, idk what I would have done for an ending.
(Except for the fact that I would GLADLY watch an entire season of the crew adjusting to live back home lmao)
In any case, this is my favorite Trek show. Favorite Captain, favorite characters. I love them. I love them so, so much.

Yes! I'm writing a fic about Hotch also being a genius but not wanting to talk about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hi it's me again screaming into a void about the fact hotch is always in the loop, he always understands clearly whatever the fuck garcia or reid are talking about
"reid uses his intellect as a shield", hotch intentionally leaves to reid the position of resident nerd so spence knows he belongs, that he has an important place within the team
but no doubt aaron is just a non eidetic memory smart version of reid
in conclusion, a fucking nerd
a geek your honor

What does RB and NBD stand for?
Reminder: you can like whatever you want, forever.
I don't really understand the shame people feel for shipping J/P. I see it in the tags of RBs all the time, but people ship ships with way (way!) less canon support and it's NBD. Relax. Like the things. Don't let anybody tell you you're wrong. That's just, like, their opinion, man.

Writing three characters who use the same pronouns and are talking about a fourth one who also use the same pronoun and ...
writing something with two characters who use the same pronouns and fighting to balance using names vs using pronouns in a way that's both smooth to read and easy to comprehend

New game: Share your three best fanworks. No thinking, just the three that instinctively occur to you. Then copy-paste this ask to anonymously share with as many people as you want.
Thanks for the ask! First up, The Silence of the Sea, a Star Trek Voyager fic. I used an outsider's POV throughout. I was inspired by Souls by Joanna Russ, which won the Hugo award in 1983. It's not a style of writing I have used in any other fic, but it suits the story. Beware, it is dark.
The Teddy Bear, a Stargate SG1 short fic Sam/Jack. Fun and gentle. Because I am sure Sam had a teddy bear when she was younger.
Beware of Darkness follows Janeway if she had stayed in the void, sacrificing herself so Voyager could escape. As she is prone to do. I thought there were too few stories exploring that particular scenario, so I wrote one. Ends well but not before lots of angst and some input from TNG characters. I added a fourth one, because I can. Fractured, another Voyager fic, this one exploring the impact a deeply traumatised Janeway has on those around her. Secondary trauma stress is a reality which is not often addressed in fics.

Fly Me to the Moon was such an original take with its fractured weaving timelines, but never veering away from those two characters' deep and long relationship. A masterpiece in story structure.
Haven't read the other two yet, but I shall, soon I hope!

Oh, thank you, anon! ❤️
Youthful Exuberance (Some Kind of Love) (Pikeuna, SNW, E) - my novel-length dive into how Chris and Una met, fell in love, and became the people they are/might have been.
Fly Me to the Moon (Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris, Voyager, E) - oddly similar in theme to the above, only shorter and with more canon except less canon except more canon.
The Haze (Pikeuna, SNW, T) - an amnesia fic for a character I figured was about to have a slew of canon backstory but oh well. This fic was a departure for me in many ways, including some purposefully stylized writing that I worked stupid-hard to get where I wanted it.
Interesting that I rarely get fics betaed but two out of three of these were betaed.
Thank you again, anon! ❤️ (Note: If I ever get this ask again and answer with different stories, that’s how it goes.)

Just watched that episode. Not only all that, but the way he talks to the woman who has been shot, stays with her while Lisbon deals with the suspect and calls for an ambulance. He is focused on the woman, on being there for her as she is dying, and Lisbon sees that focus, that singular attention to what is most important. Just being there.
insane scene. let's discuss.
first, him watching her walk up, like he Knows who she was probably just with, and the heartbreak but also just *in awe of her* anyways on his face is sooooooo 😵‍💫
the way when she walks up and he just doesn't say anything for a moment, it shows #tome that he's thinking abt It.
secondly, him saying "normally I'd take care of this but the guy looked sketchy" or whatever the hell.... BE SERIOUS what are you talking about "I'd take care of this" like ... can't take him srsly sometimes like okay honey that was an awful excuse but i love you dearly anyways
like he could've called abbott, cho, fischer, but he called lisbon not just bc he prob knew abt the date, not just bc she's his partner, but simply bc he wants to see Her.
At any time.
For any reason.
Ever.
thirdly, her being like "you called me out here for duck tape?" & him being like "you need to trust me" is just so important to me because even though it's glossed over in this scene, (they don't spend any time on it, it's not the main point of the scene) her trusting him has always been so important to him. It certainly would be now more than most any other time considering how Tense everything is.
and then her just not believing him and immediately jumping to the conclusion that he wanted to screw up her date, which honestly as a viewer isn't big of a stretch at all but surface level it kind of reminds me of the s5 "I'm not you're girlfriend" line, bc in terms of the situation it kind of comes out of left field, just like in that s5 scene, but on a *everything* level it's both subconsciously lisbons feelings for jane coming out AND her wanting Him to talk abt his feelings for Her, & it's so insanely good bc she's totally right to think it
and then he continues on to *try* to act like he didnt know! and its funny here especially because, yes, the show has shown he's a great liar, we know this, but sometimes he's not (here) and when it comes to This (the jisbon of it all) it was just getting harder and harder to keep lying and pretending and that's why here he kind of does a TERRIBLE JOB
and in another circumstance that conversation couldve ended up going in a totally different direction, except for the fact that he was being partially truthful in his reasoning for calling her, because while he did have all those other reasons behind calling Her specifically, he also did call her bc he genuinely thought/knew someone was in trouble.
so then #it gets put aside once he convinces her and they go inside.
like I said, insane scene.
in conclusion, jisbon tension angst pining yearning etcetcetc all very loved by me 🫶

There is no 'law of speciation', let alone one that says that all inter-species hybrids must be infertile. Speciation is a much more complex and fascinating concept than 'you shall not interbreed'.
In fact, it is the concept of species that might be worth having a look into more detail. We do like our little boxes to put species into. But they have great fun trying to get out, hybridise with the neighbour if they can, evolve at great pace in some instances, sub-divide themselves into isolated populations who diverge so much it's like two or more species, and generally get into sword fights with taxonomists.
Evolutionary biology is fun. Give it a go.
HELLO IM HERE TO TALK ABOUT MY ISSUE WITH BIOLOGY AND STAR TREK AND ITS ISSUE WITH THE LAWS OF SPECIATION CUZ I HAVE A BONE TO PICK WITH BIOLOGISTS (I disagree with many of the laws and theories put in place specifically in biology)
The law of speciation in biology is that the way to classify different species is that they are not able to procreate, and if they are, that the offspring is infertile. They are plenty of examples of hybrids in Star Trek. One of the most famous being of course, Spock, a human Vulcan hybrid. Spock never had any children, so it’s very possible that Vulcans and humans are able to make offspring, but they are still considered different species because their offspring is not able to procreate itself. But then how are Deanna Troi and B’Elanna Torres able to have children?? Deanna Troi is a human Betazoid hybrid, by the law of specification that should mean that humans and Betazoid are able to procreate, but their offspring is infertile right? WRONG! Deanna Troi is somehow able to have children with Commander Riker!! The same goes for Torres, Torres is a human Klingon hybrid, so specification law should mean that Torres is infertile, because human’s and Klingons are not classified as the species and therefore are not able to make fertile offspring. But then HOW is B’Elanna Torres able to have a child with Lieutenant Tom Paris? If Tori and Torres and both the offspring of supposedly different species, then how are they able to have children of their own?? Wouldn’t that mean that Humans, Betazoids, and Klingons are members of the same species? Is the law of speciation different in the future? If I’m being honest, I don’t think this is an issue with Star Trek. I think it’s an issue with our rules of biology. I think so many things in our current biology whatever are flawed and very close minded, but that’s just me.

Voyager episodes start like "let's put these guys in situations"
Episode opens, Voyager is under a layer of ice on a planet.
Episode begins, "We've been in this void for two months and everyone's going stir crazy"
Episode begins, the pilot is in prison and punching the communications officer
Episode begins, the Captain and First Officer have been cryogenically frozen for days with an incurable illness.
... I've never had a show just start episodes like this

For writers, some of those episodes are great examples on how to get rid of prologues and 2 chapters of introducing the normal world, and get straight into the action. Counterpoint is another great example.
