Hello! Please pardon the long ask but what's your interpretation of the relationship between Gilbert and Auguste?

I thought it was purely abusive at first but I noticed Auguste seems to contradict himself at times(?) He's generally cold and cruel towards Gilbert but there are instances where he shows concern, and almost always panics whenever he's aware of Bonnard's presence around Gilbert. He was dismissive when Gilbert was abducted by Bonnard but horrified when he realizes Gilbert went to Bonnard's mansion in Vol. 6 Ch 4. Rebec even notes his "fake stoicism" in the same chapter and Auguste later devises a plan to get Gilbert back. There are other instances of this contradictory behavior throughout the backstory.

Are these simply inconsistencies in Auguste's character or is there something more complex going on? I'd like to hear your thoughts!

Hello anon, that's an interesting question.

Tw: I will mention ped0philia and abuse in this post, so this might be uncomfortable for some people.

 I will answer you using the knowledge I have obtained on this subject, and I use Sergeant Tânia Guerreiro as a source, she is a Brazilian sergeant who is a reference in the fight against pedophilia and author of manuals on the prevention of sexual abuse.

So, everything that I will explain, I learned through her books and podcasts.

I believe Auguste and Gilbert's relationship was abusive, but not in a way we are used to see. When we think about a pedophile, what Auguste is, we usually think about someone who is aggressive, always cruel towars the child and has no feelings.

Auguste is cruel to Gilbert, there's no doubt about that, but from what I could see when I read the manga, he also has a sense of ownership. The moment he sees that he might lose Gilbert, both because something bad happened like when he was kidnapped, and when something good happens (when Gilbert falls in love with Serge), he panics.

There is a moment in the OVA where he freaks out at Rosemariné, and says that Gilbert is his alone.

What he really means in this scene is "Don't let anyone get close to Gilbert and show him the truth, because he thinks I love him, and he's only mine to do whatever I want."

In a podcast, Sergeant Tânia Guerreiro mentions that there are 7 types of pedophiles.I'm not going to mention them all here, but one of the types is domestic, or home-linked.

In this category is the abuser who lives with the child and who has some parental connection, such as parents, uncles, grandparents, older siblings and other family members.

Unlike another type of abuser, the one who abuses a victim he doesn't know and is very violent (even killing the victim), this type is much more manipulative and, let's say, even more careful.

They act in a much slower way, making the child feel that what they are doing there is not wrong, because the domestic abuser will not do it in an aggressive way that scares the victim.  He doesn't want immediate pleasure, he wants to manipulate the victim so that they’re stuck with him and doesn't run away, and that's what happens with Gilbert. 

In many parts of the manga, we don't see Gilbert scared or disgusted by Auguste, because he has no idea what's happening to him.  He thinks that his suffering is from being away from Auguste, and not a consequence of the abuse he suffered. He sees Auguste as someone who protects and loves him.

Auguste, on the other hand, is a domestic abuser (both because he is Gilbert's father and because he lives in the same house as him), and also because of the way he acts.  In his view, he can be cruel and act as he pleases, because Gilbert is "his". But when someone tries to open his eyes to what's going on and get him out of this situation (which Serge does) or someone puts his life at risk (which Bonnard does), he feels fear and "protects" Gilbert.

Another interesting thing that Sergeant Tania Guerreiro says is that the domestic pedophile "takes care" of the child, either by giving them clothes, food, or putting them in a good school so that he has a good education.

This is exactly what happens to Gilbert, Auguste gave him nice clothes and enrolled him in Lacombrade, a good school at the time.

Of course, in addition to being an abuser, Auguste is a sadist, so he took pleasure in torturing Gilbert psychologically and emotionally, which made him feel that Auguste was the only person he had in the world.

Auguste's stoicism can be part of his personality, and when he becomes visibly worried or distressed about something, people around him find it strange. Few things make him as worried as losing something that "is his".

 Because without Gilbert, what is Auguste? Nothing. He has no power over anyone, he can't take his frustrations out on anyone, and in reality he's completely alone in the world without Gilbert. That's why he makes sure that no one takes him away from him.

(Please don't misinterpret that last paragraph, I'm not romanticizing their relationship like some of the manga fans do, I'm saying their relationship is completely abusive, wrong, disgusting and immoral. The fact that Auguste takes pleasure in psychologically torturing and abusing a child makes me want to throw up.)

So anon, the conclusion is that Auguste is an abuser and the relationship he has with Gilbert is abusive, but not in a way we are used to seeing it.  He can do what he wants with Gilbert, but he doesn't allow anyone else to do the same or take it away from him.

Révélation about Serge in Kami no Kohitsuji Agnus Dei It's from Rinka, If you don't like spoilers please don't read it!

---- After Gilbert's passing, he eventually recovered and ended up meeting Irene, who looked like him. He had a son with her, but in the end their resemblance to Gilbert paired with the fact that they, well... weren't him, ended up torturing him emotionally, and he left them and took to living alone. He ended up becoming a music teacher at Lacombrade, and toward the end of his life he had a relationship with a student. He died at around 40.
