Remember this?

I was wondering today, why do (some) people still think that Aziraphale said this (and many other things he does/says) meaning that he doesn't want to stay at Crowley's place because he's still beholden to Heaven, it would be wrong etc etc.

Just as (some) people say he says I forgive you after Crowley kisses him because the kiss was a sin, a temptation and Aziraphale is offended by Crowley for doing this to him... I'm genuinely perplexed.

He's not saying, Oh, I don't think I should, Oh that would be wrong, Oh, are you out of your mind demon? He's saying: 'I don't think my side would like that.'

He spent 6000+ years worrying Crowley will get punished if their friendship/partnership/Arrangement/love was discovered. His first instinct here is the usual - I couldn't possibly, it would put you at risk.

We've seen how Heaven treats him. We have seen how he lies and deceives them repeatedly; S2 even starts with Aziraphale hiding his former boss from Heaven cos he knows he must be in BIG trouble to show up in his shop and he'll be damned (literally) before he gets them to do as they like with someone asking him for help without knowing what happened.

So why do (some) people assume he's helping Gabe out of some duty TO Heaven?

It's not that Aziraphale is not scared. He is. He knows Gabriel wanted to kill him a few short years before. He is not an idiot (this is a line I seem to be repeating in most of my posts).

He's not as dramatic about it as Crowley, but of course he's afraid. He is not missing Heaven in S2.

He's still terrified of them.

And that's why he's going there. That's why he's going to face his fears and save his life and his love or die trying.

Crowley sure went from "our respective head offices don't actually care how things get done" and "nobody ever has to know" to "walls have ears" FAST after Edinburgh. And Aziraphale went from looking at Crowley with hearts in his eyes to "I've been FrAtErNiZiNg" just as quickly.

I'm more convinced than ever that Edinburgh was the first time Crowley ever actually got caught and punished for fucking around with Aziraphale/doing good deeds/whatever it was they yanked him back down to Hell for, and it scared the absolute shit out of both of them and changed the whole tone of their relationship after that.

4+1 Times Aziraphale Glanced Out Maggie's Window

Come dissect a scene with me!

Today's conclusion is that Aziraphale was planning on "helping out" Maggie and Nina regardless. And it is mostly because:

So after Maggie brings it up, Aziraphale will not stop glancing back over his shoulder towards Nina.

Aziraphale looks like he's still figuring out exactly how all the pieces fit together here, but then he hears "love" and just melts about it:

(Maggie does not realize what she has summoned.)

Glance Count: 3 What's getting me is it's not just him glancing over his shoulder, they cut away to the shot of him alone thinking about it. He is actually trying to answer her question and feels legitimately bad when he can't.

While I'm in the mood to over-analyze screen layout, it's also interesting that in the Maggie shots, Aziraphale is a barely-there light blur in the corner, but in the Aziraphale shots, once they start talking about love, Maggie becomes a dark shape on Aziraphale's left side, aka the side where you would usually find a different dark shape relevant to Aziraphale's knowledge of love and pining.

For comparison, here's a shot from the beginning of the scene, where Maggie's silhouette is more clearly Maggie:

It's not just that we're zoomed in, we lose any of the color we had from the light catching her scarf and shirt pattern.

The dark possible-Crowley-metaphor gets closer once the whole "being in love" situation clicks for Aziraphale. It's not just him turning towards her either, they moved the camera to make that happen.

And then when he puts off helping, he and the dark shape move away from each other. Not as strongly, there's less camera shift here, this feels more tentative.

Something about Maggie's situation is hitting Aziraphale personally. I think at the beginning of the conversation Aziraphale was confused by what exactly is going on with her right until she mentions love, and then he knows just what to map onto it.

Glance Count: 4 Maggie lets him off the hook and yet he can't let it go. (Doomed?? Surely not!)

Now here's the one that's different. Maggie goes on to answer his question about the record, Aziraphale tries to focus up on the mission at hand.

Except then a car beeps in the street. This time when Aziraphale turns to look it feels like an instinctual response:

This one doesn't feel like it's about Nina. When we cut to his face he's disappointed and frustrated.

We know how important screen layout is for this show, and they've maneuvered Aziraphale so he can be framed with a big ole gap over his left shoulder. He's looking for Crowley, and he's disappointed when it's not him causing a traffic disturbance.

I like this. It's a sneaky moment, easy to gloss over it and think it's another glance back at Nina, but this one doesn't fit.

And yea, the angel went on to sublimate his want to get closer to Crowley into "Maggie and Nina are counting on me!" Ah, buddy.

I've been figuring it's people relating to/projecting onto Crowley and so writing Aziraphale as the kind of partner they'd want, like a fantasy moreso than character analysis-based writing. A lot of people like that in fanfic and a lot of people don't and it's all valid :3

There's something about the prevalence of the whole "BAMF Aziraphale/Just-Enough-Of-A-Bastard Aziraphale/Gentle Dom Aziraphale/Superhumanly Strong Aziraphale/Tireless Guardian of Humanity Aziraphale/Crowley's Constant and Devoted Protector and Caregiver Aziraphale" thing in a lot of this fandom's writing and art that deeply bugs me. It bugs me in a way that I'm pretty sure is 80% my own personal baggage—but I keep trying to get my head around the other 20%, the part that is maybe about something bigger, enough to articulate it. And I just can't quite find the words.

I've seen several posts critiquing the "BAMF Aziraphale" thing as trying to make Aziraphale more masc, and I agree that that's also an issue with it, but it's not my issue with it. The thing bugging me here has nothing to do with gender.

Someone is going to be elected president in November. There are going to be two options. There is no world in which someone who is not Biden or the GOP nominee -- presumably, somehow, Trump -- win the election.

Is Biden my favorite politician? No.

Has he accomplished a ton of good things in the last three years? Absolutely yes.

Pretending otherwise is disingenuous and dangerous.

If you do not vote, you are voting for fascism, full stop. Because you know who always shows up to vote? Your shitty racist neighbors, and the white nationalists trying to stop affirmative action, and the homophobic gun owners who want the party that's made dismantling marriage equality and civil protections for queer people a part of their platform, and religious fundamentalists who believe that women should be the subject of their husbands. They vote in drives, because they don't demand perfection from their candidates, just that they hate the same way they do, and do it loudly.

This left wing thing where people yell about how voting for a candidate that doesn't check every box is a valid political protest is deeply stupid and absolutely wrong. All this accomplishes is to discourage voting and make people stop trying to push for better from our politicians.

Not voting for a candidate that doesn't do everything you want them to is giving a point to the one that wants to bring out loud fascism to the US.

There will be a winner in November, and it's going to be A or B. The system sucks, but it's the one we have, and if we don't vote for the one who is actively working for at least some of the right things, we're going to end up with the one that's working for stripping rights away from the majority of Americans.

Just fucking vote.
