This morning
This morning an entire country
woke up speaking perfect German.
The thing of it was,
nobody seemed to find it alarming
or even unusual in any way.

Fragments in Her Head
She had become invalid,
like her out of date passport,
no more midnight dancing barefoot
in the sand in Puerto Vallarta
with - how shall we put it-
two young local gentlemen
who had removed their clothes
to attract the attention of the moon.
Now it was TV game shows,
soft food, rarely opened scrapbooks
and a girl from Trinidad
who came to her room
to give her some pills twice a day.
Still, there were fragments in her head
of that long ago evening with the sand
and the moon and those wonderfully attentive
young men who had brought her back to life
if just for a night.

Looking At An Old Photograph
I look at the photograph
I took fifty years ago
of a famous stave church in Norway
and I wonder not about the church
nor the people who built it
but how I got to this remote place
and how I made it back to Oslo.

Feeling out of sorts,
I looked up how to make beer.
Homebrew made me puke.

INVITATION
An invitation to be wild
written in a familiar cursive script
inside a greeting card with
bunnies on the front
made me smile.
I put the bunny card face down
on the little table in the
coffee shop where we first met
and half-remembered that day
which made me smile again.
Even though it was definitely not
an invitation to be wild together
I took it as an important reminder
nonetheless.

To Whom It May Concern
Your life wears me out
what with your here and there
now this now that
maybe yes maybe no
laughter and tears
love and nothingness.
I think I need to take a break,
go off to some silent poet’s hut,
being careful not to go anywhere near a
waterfall, rushing river, motel pool,
or you.
