Having adhd is like:

Scrolling through Tumblr while trying to fall asleep

Seeing a post that reminds you Australia has a lot of flightless birds

Wonders why south Pacific islands have such a high percentage of the flightless birds

Reads about all the species of flightless birds there are, forgetting we wanted to know why they exist

Remeber Australia also has a rediculous number of marsupials

Finally remembers to Google the question, and be underwhelmed by the answer (basically the same as to why there's so many marsupials)

Write this post rather than sleeping

See this is why you need to put any place holders inside special brackets that you're not going to use throughout the rest of the text so you can find and replace

good morning everyone I submitted the rough draft of my project poster but forgot to replace a placeholder joke with actual scientific content so now my advisor is going to read me refer to astaxanthin as “rootin’ tootin’ juicey juice” and I want to cry

So um I have realised the studyblr is kind of real toxic. Maybe toxic isn't the right word but it puts so much pressure on you to be performing. Not even from the point where everyone seems to be getting top marks and having the best materials, but just from the fact that you constantly see people studying and it makes you (maybe just me) feel like if you're not constantly working then you aren't doing enough. While the adhd studyblr was good for getting tips and stuff I think even that was putting too much pressure on me.

I'm going to keep this blog up because I had some tips that I'll probably use if/when I eventually go back to studying but for now I'm going to distance myslef from that side of tumblr as it's just making me feel like a failure for dropping out yet again.

That was one of the biggest pressures I felt at uni as a whole. Every one was competing as to who had the least sleep. You slept 8 hours? You're not trying hard enough

#0.5 for 2H and 0.7 for hb #plus the .7 is nicer to draw with and .5 is better to write with #i also had a .3 pacer which i quite liked #but 0.5 is the best fineliner. 0.7 is too thick get out with that

My brain, having a meltdown like a toddler: I just can’t do it! I don’t want to !! I can’t!! Me, parenting my tired toddler brain: Take a deep breath, it’s going to be ok. We don’t have to do everything today that’s overwhelming you. Let’s pick the most important thing to work on, ok? What’s the smallest step we can do to work towards that? My toddler brain, wiping away tears: Um, I think we should…open up the important spreadsheet and look at the first row. Me, parenting my tired toddler brain: Great! Let’s do that, and then we can have a popsicle, ok? My toddler brain: *nods through drying tears, upset, but cooperative*

ADHD is spending your whole life being told that you’re not doing your best and that you could do better if you tried harder and worked harder until you believe it yourself, becoming convinced that your your best work is actually only your average, and there’s a mythical, hypothetical, never-before-seen Your Best, which is surely the work of gods.

So you end up with this inflated ego and stalwart belief that you should be capable of curing cancer, discovering new planets, composing new opera pieces to take the world by storm, if you only tried harder. But for some inexplicable reason, you simply won’t put your mind and focus on it, and now you hate yourself for not being the spectacular specimen you were taught you ought to be.

And that’s why you end up having these conversations with your therapist where they are like “normal people don’t put this kind of demands and expectations on themselves”, and you dead seriously fucking answer

“Yes, but I’m not normal people.”
