I love how Christianic symbolism talks loud about what’s going on in episode 25 of Death Note.
(I must remind that even Ohba himself didn’t take his own creation too seriously, so please, don’t take this rambling too seriously as well)
First, we see Gethsemane.
If you are familiar with Christian stories, you probably know that the night Jesus was betrayed by Judas he was praying in Gethsemane garden to his Heavenly Father to change his fate, to not let him die. Jesus knew why he had to do this, so he accepted his fate, but Gethsemane remained in the history as a moment that showed he is not just a hero and saviour, but an ordinary man who is afraid of death.
Now remember this scene.
Sorry to all who say Watari was cruel and violent, I still think he was a good father figure for L. If he was that awful, L wouldn’t come to him in this deeply personal moment. This is that Gethsemane, and I suppose Watari is the only person L allowed himself to open to that he is afraid of dying. That he is still just a human.
And in this context, the “foot scene” looks even more dramatic and heavy.
It’s not only Judas betraying Jesus, it’s Jesus showing Judas he knows he is betrayed. What if that was the desperate measure of L telling Light “are you seriously going to kill me like that? I know you are Kira! I see what you are doing!”. Somehow I think Light knew the symbolism of this gesture, and L knew Light knew.
The most striking aspect of L that this Judas-Jesus Light-L comparison depicts is that he walks the path until the very end. Despite being afraid to die. Despite being just a human.
Here is a question.
Why he did it? Why dying for a game?
I don’t think he was completely honest when he told Wammy’s kids he is not motivated by sense of justice, and just a personal gain instead. People live for personal gain, people don’t die for it.
And if we are referring to the religious symbolism.. Maybe the answer is because deep down L does care for people?
What do you think?
