Bismark was one of my first shoots this year, and we played with some solid character range in his shots. The layers he brought with his clothing made it easy to create different color palettes and find complimentary backgrounds...but let’s talk for a second about his willingness to shave his beard. He became a fully different person in front of the camera. One of my last sessions of 2020 came with a bit of a challenge, and I do love a challenge. Ming is fantastic to work with, and she needed new shots for her job. The Challenge is that the photos came with rules. They needed to match photos that the rest of her group had shot in Manhattan, so they were outdoors, in a bustling downtown area. . Finding a downtown area in Dallas isn’t hard...but downtown isn’t exactly bustling, or the sidewalks aren’t great for shooting. I scouted a place that would work for us, but they don’t allow any photographic equipment other than your camera, so no lights, diffusion, reflectors, or any other help. The saving grace, for us photographers, was using the afternoon sun that was bouncing off of the buildings around us for our key lights. . These shots are 100% natural light. If you’re having a difficult time finding good light, stay out of direct sunlight and use objects that ARE in direct sunlight as your lights. Bounce lights are kind to skin, and you get much less squinting from your subject. . Additional Bonus...Bounced sunlight tends to have a warm color, while shade has a blue color. Mixing the warm light on her face with the blue in the background is a natural way of creating one of your favorite IG filters :) . Additional Additional Bonus...If you do have traffic lights behind your person...pay attention to them. I waited for the lights to turn green for a reason. . Additional Additional Additional Bonus...Artistic types thrive with rules. Tell an artist to paint something, and they’ll stare at the canvas for hours.
