Ladykiller by Katherine Wood
OMG this was so good. I could not stop reading it. The twists were amazing, the storyline was fresh and unlike anything I had read previously. The story follows Abby, who as a young woman, became friends with a rich girl for whom her mother worked. From then on, they were inseparable. But the story did not end happily - she is attacked by her best friend's stalker. The story switches between present day, Gia's manuscript, and Abby's memories from the time when she was attacked. The story was so well thought out - so interesting and engaging. The characters were so amazingly crafted, the story was so fun, and I honestly could not stop reading this. It was reminiscent of Saltburn, and the Talented Mr. Ripley - and I honestly would rank this right up there with those [though Saltburn is not a book]. I would HIGHLY recommend this for a fun, enticing, engaging, and steamy THRILLING summer read.

Daughters of Olympus by Hannah Lynn
I was absolutely enthralled by this book. As someone who never went through a Greek Mythology phase, the amazing and wonderful stories I am now being introduced to are so interesting and engaging. This tells the story of Demeter, with whom I was not super familiar. However, the book was so wonderfully written and approachable, it did not make my reading any less fun just because I was not super familiar with the story. The characters were so wonderfully constructed and the story so interesting, that I did not want to stop reading at all. I absolutely loved this book, even more so than any of the previous Greek Mythology retellings I had read because it was written in such a fresh and new way, and made the characters jump off the page and seem as though you really knew them. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical fiction books, regardless of whether you have any familiarity any mythology, because this story explains everything in enough detail that it does not dumb it down, but at the same time makes it easily understandable.

Their Divine Fires by Wendy Chen
This book was so beautifully written, evoking sweeping beautiful landscapes early 20th century China, through modern day in the united states. The characters were so interesting and engrossing, flawed and beautiful, with their own stories and secrets. The book follows generations of women throughout history, both in China and the US, telling the tale of women forced to conform to a life they may not have wanted, or a culture that inhibited them. The struggles and interplay between the characters were so well-crafted, and the story itself was so beautifully done that it was hard to finish it, but I am so happy I was given the opportunity to do so. I remember having learned some about Mao, Chiang Kai-Shek, and some of China's history in school, but this taught me so much more and brought it all to life, making it interesting, engaging, and realistic.
I highly recommend this book, as you will inevitably learn something new, if not about history but about human nature.

Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman
Man what a wild ride. The story is about a little girl who starts seeing someone called "Other Mommy", and the effects on herself and her parents. The writing was well done, from the viewpoint of a young child, and very compelling. So much so that I legitimately read this in a day. The character development was amazing, making it very clearly something that you could NOT put down unless you absolutely had to! I found myself sneaking off to read a few pages throughout different parts of the day, and I am sure it will be no different for anyone else. I would highly recommend this if you enjoy thrillers or horror, or any of Josh Malerman's previous books.

Read, read, read. Read everything -- trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it. Then write. If it's good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out of the window.
— William Faulkner.

We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer
Wow this book was wildly amazing. I read it in a day and a half, and honestly I would have gone even faster if I could have. The book follows a woman and her fiance, who have moved into a house that they are attempting to fix up. On evening, a family stops by, stating that they were hoping to view the house as the father lived there when he was young.
Chaos ensues at that point. There was absolutely no point at which I knew what was going to happen next, and it was amazing and terrifying. The book was absolutely engaging, and so well written. It had one of my favorite things in it - when they have little blurbs from other things - as though someone is googling, or reading wikipedia, or posting on a message board regarding the subject matter in the book.
I would absolutely recommend this book if you love suspense, or wanted something like House of Leaves but not as impossible to read [or carry around, honestly]!

The Passionate Tudor by Alison Weir
This book was so fantastic. In true form, Alison Weir did no wrong here. The history was immaculate, and the story portrayed Queen Mary in a way that I had not seen before - making her extremely understandable, if not a sympathetic character. The character development was amazing, and I was transported to another time, as I always am with her writings. Though it was long, the story sped past and allowed for more insight on my behalf than ever before. I had only really read tales which were far more sympathetic to Elizabeth, or Anne Boleyn, or the wives of Henry VIII. This was something far different and far more interesting because Mary herself was a complicated individual, as is noted in the book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves well-researched, immaculately written historical fiction.

The Mirror of Simple Souls by Aline Kiner
This book was such a unique premise. The story follows women in the 14th century in Paris living apart from men as Beguines. The story encapsulates a time when women were unable, except in this one very specific circumstance to be "free" in any sense of the word. The tale intersects with historical figures such as the Knights Templar, and paints a very clear picture of a time that is oft forgotten. I had no knowledge of the Beguines, but the story was nonetheless fascinating. Meticulously researched and well-translated, this book is a great choice if you're looking for a lesser known period of time, and an ongoing struggle - that of women throughout history to make their marks, or live freely. The history was clearly very well researched, as there is an extensive bibliography at the back, and I will definitely be looking further into some of those readings as well as this book has piqued my interest. Highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a great historical fiction book which is actually based on concrete facts.

The Main Character by Jaclyn Goldis
This book was different from other thrillers I have read recently. The story definitely had some amazing un-guessable twists but at the same time, it also was touching, beautiful, and fun. The story follows Rory, who has been chosen as a "Main Character" for popular author Ginevra Ex. The author interviews her characters and then constructs a story around them, creating bestsellers out of peoples' lives. However, the story does not go as planned, and secrets long kept are revealed. The character building was amazing, as were all of the twists that even I, someone who reads thrillers and mysteries very frequently, did not guess at any point in the book. The book was a quick read, and I got attached to the characters to the point where I was not able to stop reading even when I wanted to. I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for something to break a book slump, or if you want something fast which you know will be well-done.

Last House by Jessica Shattuck
I loved this book. It followed the story of a family who has been involved in the middle east with oil from the 50s, and the patriarch buys a home in the woods on a plot of land with other friends. The story sounds so simple in retrospect but it encompassed so many different human emotions and storylines throughout the entire thing. I really enjoyed the complex characters, the interweaving of history, but also the nitty gritty of real humans experiences as well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good multigenerational sagas. It was similar to, but more complex than the work of Kristin Hannah.

Extinction by Douglas Preston
This book was so surprisingly good. Not that I didn't think it would be good, but I didn't realize the level of research that had gone into it, until I read the afterword. The book is a great thriller in the vein of Jurassic Park with fun twists, interesting turns, and just an all around great cast of fun characters. However, the story itself was also interesting because it touches on the age old idea of we have the power, but should we do these things. The story follows a park where animals have been de-extincted, but then calamity occurs. I would recommend this as a super fun read that you will rip through fast, and for a fun summer beach book.

The Swan's Nest by Laura McNeal
Having not known much about Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning but passing knowledge, I set out to read this book. It is historical fiction, with the aim to tell the love story between the two poets. The characters came to life, and even as someone who doesn't much enjoy poetry, I found myself intrigued and interested in learning more about these two individuals. Learning about Elizabeth Barrett Browning was interesting, she was a strange character, but also had the most interesting quirks. I will for sure be learning more about her in the future and looking into her poetry as well. I would highly recommend this to someone who loves historical fiction, wants something new, and enjoys well researched and well-written books!

The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton
This book had a very interesting premise. The story follows an island at the very end of the world - a fog has taken over the rest of the planet, and the island is populated with some people who have found a way to keep the fog at bay. However, a murder occurs which sets into motion the fog coming for the rest.
The book was interesting and unique, unlike most other books I've read recently. The story was engaging, the twists were unexpected, and it was hard to predict what would occur next. I liked it because it was definitely different, and given many books nowadays, that is generally hard to come by.
I would recommend this as something for anyone who enjoys a good thriller but is tired of formulaic writing, and predictable endings. At no point during this book did I have any idea what would come next. Highly recommend!
