WB Animation Team Project Signature Poster, SCOOBY-DOO!: LEGEND OF THE PHANTOSAUR.
This was a side project for me, as I was volunteered by a co-worker to help design the dinosaurs in this Direct-to-Video animated feature.

Pet Portrait. Media: Prismacolor pencil on toned construction paper. THE TALE: Back in my days at WB Consumer Products, a very kind waitress at a favorite hot dog diner asked me to draw her dog that had recently died. A co-worker volunteered me to do it, but I couldn't disappoint Renie, even though I procrastinated over doing it for about a year. Renie never begrudged me this at all, and she was so happy to finally receive it, she bounced around the diner, showing the drawing to everybody she could. She was a classy lady.

Disney's Tigger, from Winnie The Pooh (created by A.A. Milne), playing volleyball. I did this for a friend using prismacolor pencils on toned construction paper. For a first stab at drawing any Disney character, I don't think it's too bad.
Wow! This was almost 20 years ago!

ULTRAVERSE HANDBOOK COVER (Unpublished) Color - Unpublished Comic Book Cover Art, Malibu/Marvel Ultraverse Handbook. Media: Pencil, Ink, Digital color.
So, I finally got around to finishing up the color for this old beast of a piece which never saw publication anyway.  But it still served as another digital color exercise, a tougher challenge than coloring character designs for animation. #comicbookart #ultraverse #malibucomics #marvelcomics #superheroes #supervillains

WB Animation Character Concepts, YOUNG JUSTICE: PHANTOMS, Lara and Jor-El. Media: Digital. For the Fourth Season of YOUNG JUSTICE, I was assigned two of the preeminent Kryptonians to design, the parents of Superman.  Basing my concepts on previous versions of Jor-El and Lara, including that of former Lead Character Designer Phil Bourassa, I came up with something suitable to use as the likenesses for the ice sculptures appearing in Superman's Fortress of Solitude.  They wanted Lara's hair exposed, rather than the tight cowl from earlier designs which may have been too cold, antiseptic, and soulless.  I added the El family crest to her outfit, with a cape that draped asymmetrically.  Stylized circlets suggesting modest crowns rather than plain and dated headbands added the right regal touch of status.  I gave  Jor-El's circlet more of a technological design, while Lara's is a bit more mystical.  Finally, along with Jor-El's obvious resemblance passed on to his son, I hinted even more at Superman with the colors of Jor-El's tunic beneath his robes, and the inner lining of the robe sleeves.  Of course, color didn't matter at all for the ice sculpture application, so this detail was for my own amusement.   #wbanimation #dccomics #youngjustice #cartoonart #characterdesign #superman #jorel #fortressofsolitude

YJST: PHANTOMS - Ypeerc Z Steppup! WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE: PHANTOMS, Creepy Zatanna Puppet Concepts. Media: Digital. In the Fourth Season episode entitled, "Teg Ydaer!" Thirteen (Traci Thurston) is tested by Doctor Fate, teleported into a dark realm of illusion inhabited by very creepy puppets.  One of these creepy puppets is a representation of Thirteen's mentor, Zatanna. On the art team, we divvied up the three puppet design assignments.  After a style was selected by the producers, all the puppet designs were adjusted to match the selected style, from hand puppets to stringed marionettes.   Research for this assignment proved quite interesting, learning a bit about the history of puppetry. #wbanimation #dccomics #youngjustice #zatanna #characterdesign #cartoonart #puppet #puppetmarionette

👨🏾‍🎨 PRO EXPERIENCES -
• DAILY PLANET EXCLUSIVE!
WB Animation Prop Design, YOUNG JUSTICE: PHANTOMS, Daily Planet Newspaper Photo.
Media: Digital.
In "Over and Out," the penultimate episode for Season Four, the villainous Kryptonian Dru-Zod, newly escaped from the Phantom Zone, spots a framed Daily Planet newspaper article in the Fortress of Solitude. The article's photo captures the image of Lois Lane conducting an exclusive interview with the Last Son of Krypton, Superman.
Based on a rough storyboard mock-up, I was assigned to create the "photo," using the character models originally designed by Phil Bourassa. Although I only needed to provide the figures, long after the fact I've decided to add a rudimentary background. In the reference provided, Lois looked to be using a microphone. But because Lois is a print reporter, not television, I went with a digital voice recorder and a notepad for greater distinction.

Marvel Animation Character Design, HULK AND THE AGENTS OF S.M.A.S.H., Spider-Raptor. Media: Adobe Photoshop. In the Second Season episode entitled, "Days of Future Smash: The Dino Era: Part One," we encounter yet another bit of silly fun in an alternate universe where intelligent dinosaurs rule the Earth. It stands to warped reason that in that dino-verse, there must be a super-dino version of Spider-Man. Enter: Spider-Raptor! It was difficult to keep a smile (or a smirk) off my face as I designed this character. Hey, it's a show for the kids, right? And, in recent years, dinosaurs are all the rage again. I hope you like it, and thanks so much for viewing!

WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE: PHANTOMS, Coral Pregnant.Media: Digital art.
In the Season Four episode entitled, "Nautical Twilight," the former incidental character I named "Coral" makes a return appearance.  Yes, in posting my animation art online, I've sometimes given names to incidental characters just for added fun.  I figured these designs would never be used again, but little did I know then that it's often a time-saving practice for many animated series to reuse material from their accumulated library of design files.  While it was never my intent, the producers apparently felt locked in to keeping the names I gave to certain Young Justice incidentals simply because the online fanbase tends to be quite attentive, loyal, and detail oriented.  But I also suspect that the producers sought to do me some small honor by keeping the names, provided these were not of an egregiously objectionable nature.
So, Coral graduated from nameless incidental to a full-fledged supporting member of the cast!   AND she hasn't gotten killed off!  She has returned years later, having graduated from the Poseidonis Conservatory of Sorcery, earning a prestigious position as the emissary for Neptunos.  At some point, she married, and became pregnant.  Now, as much as I admire the color selections made for Coral on the show since her initial appearance, I am sticking to the palette I chose for her as a portfolio piece online.   The show's colors make Coral look rather ordinary, like an underwater Caucasian girl.  Here, I've maintained Coral's punk-rocker style as well as her bluish color motif, which, I feel, is more befitting her aquatic namesake.

WB Animation Character/Creature Design, YOUNG JUSTICE: PHANTOMS, Forager Larva Male.
In the Fourth Season episode entitled, "Beyond the Grip of the Gods!" we visit the Bug hive on New Genesis where we are introduced to a couple of their rather mischievous young. Two Forager Larvae, a male and a female, distinguished by their coloring, get involved in a conflict that would determine the very survival of their hive. It was my assignment to design these little versions of Forager, based on Phil Bourassa's original design of the character from Season Three. Of course, this Young Justice version of Forager is a deliberate departure from that of creator Jack "King" Kirby for the New Gods property of DC Comics.
I submitted two concepts for approval, both eliciting favorable reactions due to their unavoidable cuteness factor. Jokes about adorable plush toys, and little action figures quickly bounced around the conference table. I reckon my responding joke might be to have each item come with a toy pesticide accessory? ....
Okay. I'll see myself out.
