Shogun facts #6
The 1980 series was so popular that restaurants, and other places where people go out, experienced a significant income-loss, as people preferred to stay at home and watch it when it aired.

Shogun facts #4
The crew was already out in Japan, shooting scenes, and they still didn't have anyone for the role of Mariko. They found Yoko Shimada when they were in the thick of making the film.

My face when the remake comes out but no-one is immediately obsessed with the character I have an obsession with, no-one immediately writes the exact fanfictions I wanted, while also not immediately shipping the most idiotic otp I ever had

Shogun 1980 facts #3
Toshiro Mifune (Toranaga) was good friends with Akira Kurosawa, but their relationship went south. Even more so when Kurosawa realised that Mifune took a role in Shōgun, as he found the movie's representation of Japan historicaly inaccurate and offensive.
They only reconciled at a friend's funeral, and unfortunately both died short after.

I just realised that Rodrigues was completely taylored around Nestor Carbonell. His age got adjusted (in the book he's the same age as Blackthorne), he's now Spanish because of Carbonell's Spanish decent (he's originally Portuguese, very explicitly said).
...
FX when thinking about how to improve Rodrigues' character:

Shogun 1980 facts #1
Contrary to popular beliefs, the directors of the original series weren't idiots, they deliberately didn't put subtitles on Japanese scenes. The movie was supposed to be set in Blackthorne's POV, which of course doesn't explain the scene where Rodrigues delivers the rutters to the Jesuit mission, which Blackthorne didn' know about, and it wasn't in the book either.
Bonus: when they proposed the idea of a movie adaptation to James Clavell, he sent them a copy of the book, in which he highlighted all the scenes he thought they should involve in the movie.

The best fucking scene in the entire book is when Mariko tells Blackthorne that she thinks he's so angry all the time because he isn't having enough sex, so she offers her a woman. He declines. So Mariko is all like "but why would you, look at them, they're so nice☹️" and then she's like "ooooooohhhh you're gay, aren't you, we can get you a boy too, no problem🙂" and then Blackthorne just loses his shit. The guard thinks he's impotent, that's why he's so angry, they ask him, he loses his shit even more. One of them even asks if maybe he likes animals and they decide not to ask that.
Around half of the scene revolves around the guards and Mariko, while Blackthorne has his little aneuryms in the background. Fucking hilarious, honestly. And mix in Mariko's utter confusion about why Blackthorne would be angry at the thought of having sex with men, and voilà. Fantastic scene, chef's kiss, honestly.
I was so disappointed that they almost completely left it out of the new series. All we got was: "Would you like a boy instead?" "Where even am I?". I honestly don't know why. And I'll go as far as stating that the 1980 series didn't give it the due screen time or attention either (even though I can find no faults in that, fave series evah).

When it was still only three episodes of shogun, Screenrant proved they do NOT do their research before writing an article. An entire article titled "Mariko and John's potential (!!!) romance after Buntaro's death (!!!)"
Like fuck no, it's not a POTENTIAL romance you absolute fuckwit, it is IN THE BOOK, IN THE ORIGINAL SERIES AND IN THE FUCKING TRAILER. And no, Buntaro does not and will not die because IT'S IN THE BOOK AND IN THE ORIGINAL SEIRES. Are you stupid?

I love this particular scene, because Alvito is like "I came to you, approached you, with the sole purpose of being mean to you. No strategy or agenda behind it, I just hate you" and Blackthorne is just there like "I'm boutta end this man's whole fucking career" while Toranaga is watching them like "hehehehehe".
