In 900 years of time and space, I've never met anyone who wasn't important
A commission I finished a while ago that I'm still quite pleased with! I've been really into concentricity recently and it's always really lovely when I'm able to get multiple layers of circles to line up just right.

I'm currently working to make some of my designs available as stickers! If you have any favorite designs or quotes that you'd like to see turned into physical merch, shoot me an ask and we'll make it happen. :)

Look what came in the mail!
That’s right… it’s my first merch drop :D
I’ve got stickers of my version of the Rwandan proverb featured on Ncuti Gatwa’s sonic screwdriver, in a glossy black and white finish as well as a matte metallic finish. The stickers are 3x3”.
Plus I’ve been getting back into painting, so I’ve got some teeny tiny canvas magnets for sale as well! These are about 2x2”.
Everything is available on my Etsy. And as a special thank you to my Tumblr followers, you can get 20% off all of these items by using the code TUMBLR20 !
I’ll drop the listings in a reblog to avoid this being hidden from Tumblr search. But I’m so so excited to share these with you! I’m gonna work to get my Pride designs made into stickers too, but in the meantime, let know what other physical merch you’d like to see!

I’ll work to get this digitized, then! Please bear with me as it might take a couple of weeks, but I’ll let you both know when a sticker is available :)

This was a really fun one to work on :) Can you believe I haven't done a full TARDIS design even once in the decade I've been writing in Gallifreyan? I'm glad I was finally able to rectify that oversight!

Sherman’s stance (and my reaction)
Loren Sherman (creator of Sherman’s Gallifreyan) and Sirkles (prolific Gallifreyan artist + friend of Sherman’s) posted a video a few hours ago where they talked about how to read the phrase on the new Screwdriver as well as how they feel about the BBC using Sherman’s Gallifreyan on an official prop.
Some key takeaways:
Loren noted that the use of Sherman’s Gallifreyan by the BBC does not make it canon. For it to be a canon system, the BBC needs to officially acknowledge that they are using Sherman’s Gallifreyan as the Gallifreyan on Doctor Who
Loren explained that the concept of Gallifreyan, and the concept of a circular language used by Time Lords, are owned by the BBC. Meanwhile, Loren Sherman’s system of writing, which many people call Gallifreyan, is free to use by anyone — including the BBC
Loren and Sirkles said that they aren’t offended by the BBC using the system, and in fact it’s very exciting to see the system being legitimized by being used by a show they really love and respect
It’s interesting to hear their reaction to it, and good to know Loren doesn’t feel like their toes have been stepped on. As the creator of the system, they sort of have the final say on who can use it and how, in my opinion. So if they’re giving the BBC the green light, then I’ll respect that.
I think they’ve also done a good job subtly making a distinction between the BBC using someone else’s system and the BBC canonizing a system of Gallifreyan — “canonize” here meaning to officially make a part of the Doctor Who IP. Until the BBC acknowledges that they are using Sherman’s Gallifreyan (and acknowledges Loren as the system’s creator by extension), the circles on their show, the screwdriver, and their merchandise are technically just random circles. The BBC can say these circles mean anything they want. And while this specific pattern of circles is now part of Doctor Who IP and thus protected by the copyright, any sort of “system” that could be used to ascribe meaning to the circles is NOT part of Doctor Who IP — including Sherman’s Gallifreyan. (I’m obviously not an intellectual property lawyer, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt, but this is my understanding.)
All that said, I’m still feeling a bit pessimistic about how this all shook out and what this means for the relationship between the BBC/DW showrunners and Gallifreyan artists. Regardless of the legality of using or nodding to Sherman’s Gallifreyan in an “official” capacity, I feel like it’s still….morally gray to use a fanmade system and hide behind a sort of “wink wink nudge nudge, real fans know the lore” attitude, while knowing that all the press and articles are going to think it was created by the BBC and won’t do the research to credit Loren Sherman. And especially when taken in tandem with how the BBC has explicitly stolen Gallifreyan fanart to use on the show before…. I don’t have a lot of faith in the BBC honoring the subtle distinction between them using Sherman’s Gallifreyan and then owning Sherman’s Gallifreyan.
We’ll see what this means for the future of DW and the future of the various fanmade Gallifreyan systems that exist! I’ll certainly be keeping a fearful eye on my Etsy store for the foreseeable future, but it’s been really lovely to see the community come together and get excited about this.

The new sonic screwdriver has been shown and it looks to have circular gallifreyan on it, I tried to translate it but got nothing, but I also just am not great at translating it. I figured you’d be the one to ask, can you find any actual words on Ncuti’s new sonic? Or just what are your thoughts about the new sonic :3
Hi! So as you mentioned in your other message, the sonic screwdriver is supposed to say “the sharpness of the tongue defeats the sharpness of the warriors”. However I’ve got other thoughts so I’m gonna do a bit of a vent anyway haha.
First things first, I say “supposed to” for a reason, because the phrase is missing all of the dot details that would make it legible per the Sherman’s Gallifreyan system, and it’s chock full of typos. The orientation of the words also differs, in that they’ve rotated every word slightly so the first letter is whatever’s closest to the outer edge of the screwdriver; in Sherman’s, the starting point doesn’t rotate like that.
Even accounting for the orientation change, the screwdriver currently reads “the tatpness fo the tongee befeets the tatpns fo the wat?iots”. Which….. lmfao.
So the net-net is that the BBC stole co-opted a fan’s system, and then used it wrong, even though there are literally people out there (like yours truly) who would jump at the chance to design an accurate and beautiful Gallifreyan piece for use on the show. For free even! For the sheer pleasure of adding “featured on the BBC” to my LinkedIn!
And all this because the BBC is too lazy to create their own consistent Gallifreyan system, but also too greedy to appropriately credit the artists whose work they’ve stolen for the show — artists plural! Sherman and Sirkles and who knows who else! — or to stop levying copyright strikes against other fans using Sherman’s fanmade system. When the BBC fully steals a fan’s work, it’s an easter egg, but when fans reference Doctor Who when making artwork in an unlicensed fanmade system, it’s theft of intellectual property? Make it make sense. (Spoiler: you can’t!)
I wish I could just feel overjoyed to see the fan community’s love for Doctor Who and interest in Gallifreyan incorporated into the show! In a different universe, this could be such a love letter between creator and fandom, a testament to the way that media and fandom weave together into something bigger than the sum of its parts. But in THIS universe, it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

To be fair, this sketch was also missing like 50% of the details haha. So it’s really impressive that you figured it out even with the missing information! Congratulations~
You can check out the final design here if you’re interested :)

Can you tell what this is going to say?
I’ve found a lot of joy in sketching recently. Ideas for new techniques, conceptual and composition sketches, proofs of concept, etc. I plan to clean this up someday, but until then, I thought it might interest some of you to see how many of my designs start out :)

The Barbie movie was so fun and fantastic, y'all. Highly highly recommend! The moment I left theater, I was consumed by the need to create this piece hehe.
Also, I'm so excited to share that I've finally figured my shit out and found a way to get stickers and prints and things on my Etsy, in the wake of closing my Redbubble! Which means - you can find this design as a sticker, magnet, and hoodie on my Etsy, and I'll be getting posters set up shortly as well. I'll drop links in a reblog!

Introducing: The Linguist's Phonetic Gallifreyan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a modification of Brittany G.'s Doctor's Cot Gallifreyan, which reorganized the layout of the Consonants and Vowels tables, adjusted how punctuation works, and added two new mechanics for quality of life. Its full title is The Linguist's Phonetic Gallifreyan, but the shorthand, for lack of a better idea, is GalliPhon. Interested to know the details? Read on!
I started working in Doctor’s Cot a few months ago.  It’s interesting, and a fun change of pace from Sherman’s Circular, but it has a few flaws that have really started to dig at me.  Firstly, despite the system being made to represent any language, it still is clearly made with English in mind.  Nearly all English consonantal sounds are contained in the top left corner of the consonant table.  While it does not bother me all that much that the system is made with English as the primary use — I do primarily use Sherman’s Circular, after all — it leads to all the consonants looking samey, and the layout feeling otherwise purely random.  In a similar vein, all the English consonants being clustered together led to a lot of indistinguishable consonant pairs.  I have dealt with this by leaving lines unconnected on one side, or dots attached to their corresponding circle, but this feels cheap, as Brittany did specify that indistinguishable consonants should be separated into new circles, which I find tedious and aesthetically displeasing.  Another problem with the layout is that א’s circle ends up being a pain to make every time I need to write a word that starts with a vowel.  For these reasons, I decided to reorganize the charts to have a more logical layout.  And, while I was at it, I modified the formulation of punctuation to accommodate more punctuation marks and added two new mechanics to make formulating words less tedious: diphthong bridges and the reversal dot.  As a warning, this is NOT a guide to the use of Phonetic Gallifreyan.  To learn how to play, I would recommend checking out Brittany’s walkthrough, using my charts instead of the Doctor’s Cot ones.
The Consonant and Vowel Charts
They are now loosely organized based on the IPA categorizations in the 2020 chart.  Broadly speaking: a single thin line corresponds to trills, taps, and approximants; double thin lines corresponds to laterals; a thin outer line and thick inner line corresponds to unvoiced fricatives; a thick outer line and thin inner line corresponds to voiced fricatives; double thick lines corresponds to nasals; and a single thick line corresponds to plosives.  And for decorations (going from left to right in the chart because they are hard to describe): alveolar, retroflex, postalveolar, dental, “other symbols,” pharyngeal and glottal; labiodental; bilabial; uvular; velar; and palatal.  The symbols do not always correspond exactly, but that’s the general organization I worked off of.  For the vowels, I went easier on myself and organized them mostly by the English vowels, left-to-right O, U, A, I, and E.  Additionally, as there are 28 base IPA vowel sounds but 30 spaces, I included the two most common diphthongs, ai and au.  However, as I now have an option to make diphthongs, these are not recommended for use.
Diphthongs
I have added a function that will allow you to have two vowel sounds in a single circle, but only if they are part of a diphthong.  Distinct vowel sounds must be in different syllable circles, even if there is no consonant between them.  Two vowels in a dipthong, however, may be connected by a diphthong bridge, a line leading from the edge of the first vowel to the middle of the second.  An example of both a diphthong and a still separate vowel can be seen in Ohio: /oˈhaɪ o/
Tumblr media
Vowel/Consonant Reversal
The other function I am adding is the reversal dot, necessitated by how annoying it is that words like “is,” “and,” and “or,” require two circles despite their simplicity.  So, in Phonetic Gallifreyan, you can add a filled dot to the center of a word circle to indicate it should be read vowel first.  Consonants still go outer circle first, then inner circle.  As an example: “and” /ænd/
Tumblr media
Punctuation
The primary change is that they don’t consist of two circles, just one. This way, a limited pool of punctuation can be combined to create more punctuation, like combining a period and a comma to make a semicolon, or three periods to make an ellipsis, or even some rarer punctuation like the interrobang (‽)
Tumblr media
