Dazai’s belladona is an inside joke with himself  [a theory]

We all know how dazai calls ladies “belladonna” as some sort of praise and persuasive way to make them consider double suicide with him. At first I thought that he spoke Italian as the expression per se means “beautiful woman” in Italian, something short, sweet and S I M P L E.

But let me ask you something, when has Dazai and SIMPLE had been in the same sentence? Exactly, never.

So after analyzing the inflection on his voice when he uses this term (a lame excuse to rewatch the whole series to fill the void of my mortifying existence) I noticed he does not pauses as to make an space in between  the words; for dazai ‘Belladonna’ is a single word, something more beautiful than any woman in his eyes.

A plant.

But not just any plant: artropa belladonna, one of the most toxic plants ever known. This little and seemingly harmless thing if eaten raw can go from permanently mess up a person’s parasympathetic nervous system (which regulates all involuntary functions such as breathing and heart rate) to kill them on spot. But if its processed in a lab it can be a very effective sedative, pain reliever, anxiolytic and sleep pills. Now the thing with belladonna sleep pills is that they were taken away from the market because it was the easiest and most effective way to commit suicide during the 20′s.

Also, ironically the name of the plant takes root in artropos as in one of the three fates from the greek mythology (the one that ended mortal’s lives) and bella donna as in «beautiful woman» in italian because of its ancient use as a cosmetic (it makes skin paler) and hallucinogen. Also it was one of the first poisons ever discovered and actively used in war.

Then, everytime Dazai calls a lady “belladonna” he is actually asking them to be his cause of death (independently of how many times he proposes a double suicide) and that’s actually hilarious if we think of it.
