You knew didn't you? You had to have known. How do we know you aren't doing the same thing now that they were for the last two years?
I didn't. I think anyone who was a friend of Freydis Moon (or at least in their server) can let you know how I reacted.
I think I've always been very clear always about my Mexican-ness and any of my friends can vouch me. I'm tamaulipeco (¿quién fingiría ser del mataulipas?), raised under the 2012 massacres in the state at the hands of Los Zetas, lived and went to school across the border before "officially" immigrating during that 2012 madness, which included the kidnapping and torture of our mayor and corpses hanging from public overpasses. After that, I primarily lived in a US-side border city, where you had to pass through checkpoint to leave the town at all. My grandfather on my mother's side is from Puebla, and my grandfather on my dad's side is from the border between Durango-Chihuahua. My dad was actually born in Chihuahua, but he says he's only from Tamaulipas. My mother was born in Tamaulipas.
During COVID, one of my uncles was kidnapped by the local crime organization (the successor to Los Zetas) and tortured. My home in the US had one of the worst COVID death rates in the entire country, and we had to deal with the state of Texas sending more aid to more Anglo-populated areas while we suffered. Before drafting ABM, I was on a reporting fellowship in my Mexican home area to write on the mass kidnapping situation regarding migrants from Central America. For my PhD application, I wrote that my special interest is criminal governance and corporatism in Mexican crime groups, specifically the aforementioned Los Zetas, and I cited Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera and Dawn Paley as my academic inspirations.
I posted my family's rosca de reyes here in January, and I posted our piñata for Easter. My mom and I's favorite band is Grupo Frontera. On the night I finished the draft of A&M, I saw Luis Miguel in person; my mom loves him like any Mexican middle-aged woman does, and my father think he's whatever. My favorite place (in the city I currently live) is a gordita food truck where I order the "guisado verde" that's really just picadillo with a little bit of salsa verde. I'm a big fan of tacos de chilaquiles from Taco Palenque.
As much as this ask bothers me, I want to meet you in good faith. Being Mexican has given me way more pain and loss than it has ever gained me anything. I hope you can trust me

oh my favorite trope? two people who go through something so unique and agonizing and entirely beyond words that they have no choice but to create a bond that transcends all other types of love, thus acting as the sole point of understanding for the other person in a world that cannot fathom what they’ve been through

Random writing thought: the best stories are often the ones that only you could have written — but also the ones that you could only write at this one moment.
I couldn't write All the Birds in the Sky from scratch now if I tried. But the me of 2013 couldn't have written The Prodigal Mother either.

Holy heck I just bought and binge read Eyeteeth and I loved it. I can't wait to read your other work, the themes you touch on are all my favorites ever. Just joined the email list, can't wait for more.
I loved how Mede bought the art of them in the end. They saw Adam's insides, but Adam saw their insides too 😍
Aaaa thank you so much!!! I'm glad you enjoyed it 🥰

yes yes acts of violence often evoke eroticism and stabbing someone is potent penetration imagery but sometimes when i kill someone it's just because i want them to die

Your personal triggers and squicks do not get to determine what kind of art other people make.
People make shit. It's what we do. We make shit to explore, to inspire, to explain, to understand, but also to cope, to process, to educate, to warn, to go, "hey, wouldn't that be fucked up? Wild, right?"
Yes, sure, there are things that should be handled with care if they are used at all. But plenty more things are subjective. Some things are just not going to be to your tastes. So go find something that is to your tastes and stop worrying so much about what other people are doing and trying to dictate universal moral precepts about art based on your personal triggers and squicks.
I find possession stories super fucking triggering if I encounter them without warning, especially if they function as a sexual abuse metaphor. I'm not over here campaigning for every horror artist to stop writing possession stories because they make me feel shaky and dissociated. I just check Does The Dog Die before watching certain genres, and I have my husband or roommate preview anything I think might upset me so they can give me more detail. And if I genuinely don't think I can't handle it, I don't watch it. It's that simple.
