the difference between applying and separating aspects in the natal chart

When a faster planet is approaching the exact degree of an aspect with a slower planet, that aspect is applying. When a faster planet is departing from the exact degree of an aspect with a slower planet, that aspect is separating.

These two stages on either side of an exact aspect present an arc in its effects: application is a process of initiation, accumulation, and construction; exactness is the peak, the culmination, the purest tension or purest ease, crystallized; and separation is a process of release, resolution, and dissolution.

These stages are most pertinent to predictive & electional astrology. To differentiate between the “future” and “past” effects of an aspect allows an astrologer to fine-tune their interpretation of the way potential events unfold between the push and pull, ebb and flow of each planet’s influence.

In a natal chart, it works a bit differently. The human personality is not as linear as events in time. The popular description is that applying aspects may have an increasing or greater effect as the native gets older, while separating aspects may have a decreasing or lesser effect as the native gets older; but strength of planetary influence in context to age is something better represented in predictive methods like returns, profections, and progressions. The natal chart is stagnant and foundational, and it is relevant no matter how old someone is. Its contents can’t be isolated to any stage of life. The energy of an aspect always pertains to the native’s behavior no matter how old they are or where they are in their personal development, and the ‘stage’ of an aspect has influence over its energy on a psychological level.

Applying aspects in a natal chart are proactive and receptive. The planets involved look ahead, they anticipate, they expect, and most importantly, they try to act in advance. They are often more “on edge” about their circumstances due to an inherent uncertainty, but this also makes them more aware and sometimes more in control. They are inclined to search for opportunities, so they tend to focus more actively on things that have yet to happen.

Separating aspects in a natal chart are reactive and reflective. The planets involved see things most clearly in retrospect. They are in constant review or recollection; they linger, but at the same time, they are more willing or more fluid, able to work with their circumstances. They are inclined to search for lessons, so they tend to focus more actively on things that have already happened.

The faster-moving planet is most often the more conscious entity. It is creating the condition of the aspect so it feels it to a greater extent than the slower-moving planet, which may be the force that “offers the opportunity” or “teaches the lesson” according to the point of view of the faster planet.

It is generally much easier for the native to take charge of their applying aspects; behaviors associated with applying aspects have a more malleable nature, open to change, whereas behaviors associated with separating aspects are a lot less “conscious” or feel less self-generated. Separating aspects may often be over-contextualized – the planets involved are less poised for accountability and may want to look outward for explanations & answers, while applying aspects view themselves in a light of self-centrality where their actions are very significant. Applying aspects are, overall, more influential over the native’s psyche than separating aspects, because they are developing within the native’s sense of self and within reach of their will. Separating aspects have already developed outside the native’s power or awareness. Applying aspects represent what you believe you can do (perspective of control and opportunity), and separating aspects represent what you believe has been done to you, around you, or beyond you (perspective of coping, learning, overcoming or adapting).

Of course, the specific planets themselves have to determine the particular meaning of whatever angle they find themselves in, and each one may react differently to the condition of their aspect. Application & separation aren’t going to change the nature of a planet; the planet is simply placed in a different point of view and it will choose to behave accordingly. For example, Mars in a separating aspect does not suddenly become passive or prone to give up – it may actually lash out more intensely. When Mars applies, it believes it has the authority or liberty to do whatever it wants, because the results are not set in stone. When Mars separates, it may feel that the other planet has taken control away from it, or that its opportunity for control has slipped away, because it detects a pattern or set of results that it didn’t get the chance to dictate for itself; this can be threatening, and can create harsh rebelliousness in Mars.

The application & separation of an aspect determine its perspective, above all. The planets are positioned to perceive each other, as well as their shared circumstances, in a certain way. When the planets come into contact, they shift each other’s focus. That is partly what aspects measure. This focus is captured in a birth chart, halted and preserved in an individual’s psyche, despite any of their circumstances or experiences. Even if the effects of an aspect change as the native matures, the focus is a permanent psychological fixture. That is ultimately true for all natal placements.

(Submitting this again because i forgot to add something) I'm turning 24 this year and going into 1st house profection year, can you give any insight on what it might be like. If it helps, I have Scorpio mars in my 3rd house and libra moon in my 1st house. Thanks.

The best profection year in my opinion. Its going to be chaotic as hell but fun? Its a new journey of self knowing so I think youll have a ball unless you have like Saturn or chiron there then you might have to reel it in a bit. Also depends on what placements you have in your first and where your chart ruler of course is for your solar return. Libra moon should make it quite the healing journey, lots of self love and lots of romanticizing life. I think 1st house profection years are a breath of fresh air from the chaotic 12th house ones. Its basically saying congratulations for making it through that hell <3

Can you tell us more about profection years? Especially for those that are 23/24 going through their 12 house profection year

Hello, sweetie! I can :3 Background - What are they? So, to understand them in full detail, I highly recommend the channel The Astrology Podcast and their specific vid on Profection Years. In short, Profection Years are based on a Hellenistic/traditional astro timing technique that's derived from each year from birth according to the west's interpretation of when life starts (in the east it's different) and how it has a correlating theme tied to your chart. Everyone goes through the same profection years by age but their lords of the year may be different. Lords of the year are whichever planet rules the sign of the house your Profection Year occurs in.

Here's a short guide to the planetary rulers based on traditional astrology -> Aries = Mars Taurus = Venus Gemini = Mercury Cancer = Moon Leo = Sun Virgo = Mercury Libra = Venus Scorpio = Mars Sagittarius = Jupiter Capricorn = Saturn Aquarius = Saturn Pisces = Jupiter Why don't we use outer planets? Because the outer planets weren't discovered during the Hellenistic period (Uranus=1781, Neptune=1846, Pluto=1930), then they aren't included or considered to be natural primary rulers of certain signs. So, even though in natal interpretations, you may assign Neptune as a ruler of Pisces, in trad astro, Jupiter is because Jupiter in Pisces represents unfiltered belief and good will in something that can, imo, transform into Neptune being an 'evolution' of Jupiter for Pisces where the boundaries between belief and reality dissolve and becomes transcendental. Same goes for Scorpio and Pluto and Uranus and Aquarius. Another reason there also not often considered is because those outer planets take the longest amount of time to revolve around the sun (Uranus=84 years (each sign stays in it for 7 years), Neptune=165 years (13+ years), Pluto=248 years (20+ years). So outer planets are considered to be more 'Generational'. Even though clusters of people born in a 2 and a half period have the same Saturn and people born the same year have the same Jupiter, those are considered to be more personal planets. Also! It's an ongoing debate in the Astrological community, but the outer planets, as far as symbolism and benefits and consequences go, are considered to be more like 'Free Agents' because they don't have the same beneficial or malevolent effects as Benefic and Malefic planets according to Sect. What is 'Sect?' Click here. So their interpretations are more loose and open to wider perspectives. I like to interpret them as phenomena that happens to you without you realizing it and function according to their own rules and have more to do with the heavier themes of life hitting you at random that are sudden and huge and are difficult to predict and track. They also contribute to the underpinning of many of our psyches because of influential events that shape us and affect the course of the lives we lead and how we lead them. Like: death, finding oil, volcano eruptions, tsunamis, car crashes, making monumental discoveries, genocides and ethnic cleansing, revolutionary inventions and revolutions in general, and cultural and generational patterns and trends. They're history movers and shakers. If Pluto is in your 5th house for 20+ years then having it correlate with a Profection Year isn't going to make much sense. However if an outer planet is in a Profected house w/ your lord of the year and they aspect each other, then something may happen. But that's a rare case. But onto the second part of your question since we've covered the basics.. What does a 12H profection year mean for a 23/24 year old?? If you're 23, you'd be experiencing a 12th House profection year, similar to all other 23 year olds born roughly between 1997-1998 right now. If you're 24, then it'd be your 1st. But let's talk about it.. Between 21.5-23, you're going to experience a stage in your natal Saturn cycle known as a 'Waning Saturn Square', which is when the established structures you may have benefited from and are used to begin to push back against you or rapidly change. It's the first job you got from your family friend at 17 suddenly giving you the boot or you graduating college and heading into your chosen field after a year or two and having an existential crisis because you actually just hate it. Everyone's chart experiences similar patterns like this that occur in their chart. That's why the infamous 'Mid Life Crisis' occurs when the current Uranus starts opposing your natal Uranus in your 40s. All planets hit your chart in a cycle because they rotate around the sun cyclically.

Similarly, other 23 year olds in your graduating class may be settling down and having kids or having surprises in the forms of kids that completely shifts their priorities. Some of them are soaring, others are trying to dig themselves out of debt, and others are facing underlying issues that have quietly accumulated that they have to deal with. 12th House profection years occur every 12 years and encompass a period of reflection and taking a second to breathe in the midst of the hustle and bustle of our lives to look around and assess where we are. For 23 year olds, this Waning Square that occurs during this period is the prelude to adulthood. It's going back home after you stormed out and declared yourself independent at 18 because you hated your parents' control and spending time in your room on your back staring at the ceiling and realizing that you have far less control than you thought you would as a sense of helplessness washes over you. On the wheel and generally speaking, the 12th opposes the 6th. The 6th House deals with the material world and hard material circumstances that come with our everyday that require maintenance like our bodies, maintaining our status at our jobs, and routines and chores we do to maintain our lives overall. The 12th deals with the 'immaterial' and the existential. It represents when we're in the womb and in some Astrology niches can show what the circumstances were prior to birth that shape us w/o our knowledge coming out. Like how the birth parent was feeling and their anxieties that they shove onto us that we don't see until it's picked up in therapy years later. The 12th is where we tuck a piece of our shadows. Even if you don't have 12th house planets, wherever the ruler of it falls in your chart will echo warnings to it about how you act without realizing it. Maybe you have Mars here, for example. That means that you internalize frustration and bury it and you, in fact, were mad about the way your friends or family treated you during that one situation but said everything was fine because you didn't wanna cause a fight. The 12th will be where you store it. This also goes for Sagittarius Risings and Taurus Risings with Scorpio and Aries in their 12th houses because wherever their traditional ruler Mars is will be where you channel your anger. That also goes for people with Moon/Mercury Square/Opposition/Inconjunct (Quincunx) Mars placements. So, with that symbolism in mind, the 12th is like heading down into the cellar and dealing with the real life existential mess we tuck away and compartmentalize so we can perform better in our everyday lives (6th). But sometimes it's not all that dramatic and is more about you staring at a hole in the wall for longer than you imagine what's normal and start wondering what the fuck you're doing with your life, especially at age 23. Because you're an adult but in today's world, you're kind of still hinging on adolescence because adulthood to us looks very different than what being an adult meant 20 or 30 years ago. We can't work a part-time job and come up with more than enough to pay rent or start saving up for retirement or a down payment on a house. For those in western countries w/ individualist ideas about family and community (i.e - many POC live communally culturally speaking), we're still living with our parents or are relying on them more than we'd like. We're sinking in hundreds of thousands of debt from college for degrees many of us changed our minds half-way through about so we hastily changed it to something out of fear that we'd be left behind. What does this mean for 97-liners in 12H Profections NOW? Those born after 96 have to deal with coming of age after the world 'thought' it climbed out of a global recession. You were 10-12 at the time. Middle school kids. You're a bit different from the younger part of Gen Z who were born when Uranus and Neptune were in Pisces/Aries and Aqua. This means that many of you still inherited the 'grit your teeth and pretend like everything's okay bc one day you'll be rewarded for it'

being in Aqua while Pluto just crossed into Sag. It meant that you were cleverer dealing with it (coping) than the generation before (mine) but many of you probably have some form of performance anxiety. Even if you've got something in the bag, you don't actually process that you've gotten over the hill until after it happens because a lot of your 'mojo' is instinctual. Your friend shakes you awake after you fall asleep after finishing a marathon or after taking a test and you still anxiously think you're not gonna pass or you've got to study one last thing but it's over and the results come in and you pleasantly learn that you've nailed it. You don't understand what happened at all. That's going to hit home for many of you born in '97. So, at 23, many of your fears and anxieties are going to culminate. You're most likely going to spend a lot of time thinking about the right path you want to take. I can't promise that you'll find it this particular year because life is ultimately a journey... However, since 97-liners are currently experiencing a Jupiter Return during their 12H profection year, you're going to find some form of luck or opportunity when you think all is lost. As per usual, ya'll with Aquarius in the latter parts of your chart manage to overcome a hurdle by instinct because you're the sort of people who real world solutions come more naturally to. You're Saturnians born with a bottle of pixie dust from Uranus on your side that you don't realize is there until you embrace that you're going to be just fine as long as you try. And your efforts on trusting yourselves will be rewarded in your 2H profection years when you turn 25 and 2023's Jupiter in Aries will conjunct your natal Saturn in Aries placement, pointing to opportunity awarded when you assert yourself. In 2022 when Jupiter crosses into Pisces during your 1H Profections, towards the tail end of the year, it'll sextile Neptune and should give you a boost in case you were doubting yourselves in anything you want to accomplish. ✨✨✨

Saturn represents serious matters, fears, delays, dissassociation, restrictions, setbacks, karma, lessons, frustration, perseverance, responsibility, duties, grief, sorrows, unexpected success, discipline.Its house is where you would have issues/insecurities with and need to put the effort to get the fruits. The house where it seems others have it easy than you. It is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries. It rules over Capricorn both in western and sidereal. And it co-rules Aquarius, with Rahu in sidereal and with Uranus in western. It represents feet, wind, hair, nervous system, teeth,etc. In vedic, it aspects 3rd, 7th and 10th house from its location.

Saturn in 7th -

Hardworking, ambitious, solitude-seeking, independent, rational thinkers, practical, especially if near descendant because Saturn from here directly aspects your ascendant. You may have had unpleasant experiences with relationships in general, could be yours or you saw somebody else’s that was failing this is particularly for romantic committed Relationships like marriages. On the other hand it’s possible you may find others having easier time getting into relationships or just being in one. This may stem from the fact you tend to have high expectations from your Partners and has no difficulty in staying single for a long time if it means waiting for the right one or the one that meets your eye. You yourself tend to be really faithful and loyal to partners. Your approach to relationships is practical and rational and less emotional, you would rather solve matters at hand by talking rationally. This is especially true if Saturn is close to Descendant. You may possibly have a had time with fame, but it will sure come if it’s a a goal after so much effort but it’s sure to stay permanent for most. You could attract older partners, or just in general your audience you attract could be older than you are. You may refrain from relationships or commitment as it may seem like a responsibility and duty to you which needs proper attention plus you may have fear of disappointing others. There’s a sense of not wanting to be alone yet cannot seem to open yourself up. Saturn here could give you problems in partnerships due to your inability to not adjust and be strict with own beliefs, you may be dominating and controlling in relationships, which causes conflicts for you and your partner’s as Saturn is much better handling things on its own, having the driver seat. If aspected by mercury this is usually less severe and is only for matters that matters most to them. With good aspects it makes one diplomatic, socializing and law abiding, for very few they could be justice seeking and can actually work in law. You may have fear of commitments, public, could be introverted, you would rather have your identity hidden. With a strong Saturn getting good aspects, you may have success in legal battles. You may marry for stability, status, finances rather than love. Others may look up to you or value your opinion or ask you for advice, you may serve as an authority figure to some many people. Your self worth could be affected by relationships or you may take some undeserving partners due to low self esteem. You are often focused on other areas of life than relationships, you may be aloof and are detached or unbothered by public and partnerships, you are more of a lone wolf or you pretend to be, which is often why you can give out an intimidating image to others.

In vedic - You may have a had time travelling though, if you are someone who loves travelling if Saturn is afflicted it can delay travel plans or just in general you have to put in so much effort to travel or only after much delay you may be able to travel. You could have health complications involving sexual matters, urinary problems, hormonal imbalances, thighs, hips, lower back, knees, migraines, headaches, problems of nervous system, mental health problems, chest, back problems. It may delay higher education or you can study at Doctoral or masters level in your 30s/40s. You may be non-religious, has difficulty with accepting spirituality or a higher being, and have issues with authority figures. Adjusting or giving into control is not your cup of tea, your relationship with spouse’s siblings may be restrictive or not very pleasant, they may live away. You may have difficulty in your career or get it going if Saturn is Afflicted, with many with this placement, it usually gives an independent source of income or you usually have a business than be employed under someone. You are usually dutiful and sincere and have no qualms taking a stand for yourself, you may get a kick when people challenge you, you like proving others wrong. You may have karmic debts that needs to be paid through partners platonic or not. You may have had some past life issues that concerns your either romantic partners or business partners or public in general. It’s possible you may have done public bad in past life, so it’s possible you were a famous person. You may have been a very dedicated/obsessed, dependent marriage partner, someone who let go of partner’s bad deeds just to be with them, or some one who lacked individuality, so probably why you are sent to be detached with said themes this lifetime, to focus on yourself and be less dependent on others whether it’s for tangible/mental/emotional stability or self wort.
