Oh, hey, you get to see this again because I haven't even bothered to do a new thing for Easter. :)
All jokes aside, I never finished the story-line for this and never posted everything I had related to this. That said, I'm going to be reblogging the old ones and posting the ones in my drafts over the next... whenever...
Enjoy. :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...Don't tempt me, Zero.
But, yeah, not going past the PG-13 rating here on this blog as I want this to mainly be a mostly general space.
Anyway...
Happy Easter! :)

Hi, I'm back. :/
So, still not entirely sure what I want to do or even if I should still keep posting art here. Gonna be fully honest, the whole data sale thing still kind of has me shook-up and pissed, but on the other side of things, I still also like spreading my brand of idiotic humor.
Honestly, I'm just going to go with what I initially said and post what's in my drafts. If I do post new art here, it's likely only going to be fanart and no higher-quality works as I don't trust this site anymore.
Anything original is likely just going to be linked offsite.

So, I was looking into the latest Deviantart drama and found something that may be worth looking into...
Basically it may be a case that Wix (the company that owns DA) literally don't know what's going on and about all the outcries from users.
Tumblr media
Granted, this is a theory but not entirely improbable.
Now, if you still use the site or still care about the site's future, contacting Wix staff may be the route to go.
Now, it's not a guarantee that things will actually change, but I think it's worth a shot. On top of that, if you do decide to go this route, please be courteous and polite as being rude and cursing people out typically makes things worse when trying to get a point across.
Another thing to keep in mind this is partially a "time is of the essence" sort of thing as they're planning on getting rid of a bunch of features of groups by converting them over. Start date of this is March 25th.
Also, if anybody has any avenues for contacting Wix staff, no matter what it is, feel free to share.

Yeah, after reading this, I don't know that I can feel comfortable posting art here again, at least not directly. If I'm to be entirely honest, I'm not even sure I'm comfortable posting direct links.
It sucks because I did have a few ideas for stuff I wanted to do here and wanted to eventually make my own silly little responses to others post via my art.
This doesn't mean I'm leaving or deleting all my stuff here as, like I said before, they already have everyone's stuff, and on top of that, honestly I feel that'd be punishing those who like my stuff who had nothing to do with the data sale. Then there's also the fact that even if I did delete my blog and all the contents, it'll all still be floating around. Even if i put in a request to have my work removed it'd likely be a hassle and from what I've seen, there's no guarantee the request will be honored.
I still do intend to post the backlog art though as I said I would; that hasn't changed.
For the time being, I'm likely going to take a hiatus from posting new art in general until either something changes (hopefully for the better) or I figure out how I want to go forward.
In the meantime I'd been thinking of posting things like theories and headcanons for a long while. I mean, even if AI companies get that,
Besides all the damage control Automattic is trying to do about selling user data to openAi and Midjourney, I don’t think they realize how much they have jumped the shark for some of us.
See, I worked for the company for a long time. I was really proud of being part of Automattic: For years, there was a clear push to be ‘the odd silicon valley company’, one that actually respected user privacy, gets its money from the users themselves and not from stealing their privacy, etc.
When Automattic bought tumblr, I remember Matt saying on an interview that his plan was to try to show the world that there was a different way to do social media, one that was not based in selling user personal data: he wanted tumblr to be funded by its own users. I remember actually defending him on tumblr itself: People was skeptical, but my reply to them was always that even if I not always agreed with Matt on everything, I believed he was really serious about protecting user privacy (even if it was only to protect his own reputation of being, somehow, a champion of the open internet).
Well.
Now this has been proved as bullshit. Automattic signed a deal with the two more prominent AI companies to sell user data, and didn’t announce it until the first data delivery was already done. What’s worse, if you read the announcement they posted, it’s clear they intended to gaslight the userbase: They talk about a new profile setting to protect your blog from AI scrappers. They are trying to sell it as an extra layer of protection against data scrappers, when they know very well that they only think they can do to prevent that is politely request the scrappers to not take this or that blog (spoilers: AI companies couldn’t care less about those requests). And of course, what is worse, at any moment it’s mentioned that Automattic has reached an agreement with the people behind those scrappers to proactively sending the data on their own, without even needing to scrape the web to get it. In exchange for (what I assume) is a hefty amount of money.
Not only Automattic has sold your data behind your back, but on top of that, they are trying to gaslight you about it.
The AI data selling is a punch in the gut. It’s horrifying, but at least it’s not surprising: Matt Mullenweg has been hyper-bullish about AI since last year, so he probably doesn’t even see this as the huge betrayal of user trust that it is. But the way they intended to communicate it to the end-user, the sneaky, shady way to talk about it in the official posts… that feels like an entire battering.
For me, the trust is absolutely broken. I can’t trust automattic more than I trust Meta: Yeah, there’s this ‘don’t share my data with AI thieves’ checkbox in tumblr and WordPress now, but they haven’t even communicated clearly what the 404 media article is telling us: That the data is already in OpenAi hands, and that the only thing the toggle does is kindly request them to not use your data, and that they are not even contractually obliged to comply.
Even if they actually comply and don’t use that data, I can’t trust Automattic to not change their approach and remove that checkbox in the future (It’s not the first time I see the company doing these kind of changes, but I always lied myself thinking that in the end it was minor issues with less impact than the overall stance of the company). I can’t trust Automattic to not start doing these kind of things behind our backs (since they have clearly tried to do it this time and got caught only because some brave soul leaked an internal doc to 404 media).
How could I trust Automattic anymore, when they even tried to keep which kind of data they were selling to OpenAI in secret from its own engineering team? I feel terrible for my ex-coworkers still in Automattic, because I know a big share of them are mortified and aghast for everything that has happened in the past week. But it’s their job and they are powerless against greedy and evil executives (‘evil’ as in “couldn’t care less about the users or their employees”)
When I was laid off last summer, the reason I got from HR was that ‘I wasn’t aligned with the direction the company needed to take’. And holy shit, wasn’t that true.
As I said, I can’t trust Automattic more than I trust Facebook, Google, or Twitter. And it breaks my heart and I can’t believe I’ve just wrote that.

Opt yourself out of AI scraping.
Like many sites, Tumblr is opting us in to AI scraping instead of opting us out by default, and packaging it like a kindness. We're not calories to consume. You can opt yourself out in blog settings (per blog you use).

i wondered if you could explain how to recognize ai generated pixel art? i would not have been able to tell that the art you reblogged was ai generated if you hadn't pointed it out
i know you mean well when asking this but its so depressing that its NOT obvious... :/ so yay thanks AI,,,,
anyways if you zoom in, it becomes very obvious:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
those... arent pixels... they dont conform to a pixel grid, they have artifacts INSIDE the pixels, they have 100s of different sized pixels, the resolution would be HUGE if actual pixels.
here's the generated image:
Tumblr media
here's an edit i made quickly to show what it would look like if it was actual pixel art:

Considering my options
So, first wanna apologize regarding the 'spamming' of posts related to this whole Tumblr/Wordpress AI debacle. Honestly, this is a real important issue to me and I'm hoping the more I boost on this stuff, the more people it reaches. I'm also going to keep doing so in hopes that effective change is made.
Now, my options, part of me wants to just stop posting my work here and keep it almost exclusively on Pillowfort, and possibly to a lesser extent, Mastodon. My main issue with that is both sites is lack of content that I'm looking for, especially in Masto's case.*
In either case, I'm going to against my better judgement and still post stuff here
My reasoning is I still have a bunch of stuff saved in drafts, so if it's already on the site's severs, it's probably already been included, so there's really no point in not posting it. I also like sharing my dumb humor too much, so there's that.
My other options:
I don't really have plans to go back and post anything new on DA for the time being as it's now pretty much crawling with AI crap.
Never posted any work on Cohost either as certain things about that site kind of put me off.
While I do have a Bluesky now, I don't plan on using it for posting art all that much.
Other options are to either make an account on another art site or make a personal website from scratch.
Now, while I plan on eventually doing the latter, the former I'd rather do more research on before diving in, though for if I were to go that route, Artgram and Cara would be my top pick at this time.
I also have other ideas that I'd like to eventually get to specifically for the art/creative communities, but those are things that are going to take time, effort, and money.
*I'd still recommend Pillowfort though as there's still interesting content.

Reddits mods are pissed that the CEO is getting paid 190m a year while they cull CSA and hate speech for free. Instagrams AI is mistakenly banning users for spam when they comment on friends pictures. Twitter is a hate filled bot farm run by an egomaniac. Facebook is a boomer graveyard filled with AI conspiracy theories radicalizing granola moms and your grandad. Tumblrs CEO is breaking data privacy laws on a targeted harassment campaign. Tiktok is making sexism woke and trendy again. 2024 is the year social media sites implode and take us all out with them.

Some positivity in these turbulent AI times
*This does not minimize the crisis at hand, but is aimed at easing any anxieties.
With every social media selling our data to AI companies now, there is very little way to avoid being scraped. The sad thing is many of us still NEED social media to advertise ourselves and get seen by clients. I can't help but feeling that we as artists are not at risk of losing our livelihoods, here is why:
Just because your data is available does not mean that AI companies will/want to use it. Your work may never end up being scraped at all.
The possibility of someone who uses AI art prompts can replace you (if your work is scraped) is very unlikely. Art Directors and clients HAVE to work with people, the person using AI art cannot back up what a machine made. Their final product for a client will never be substantial since AI prompts cannot be consistent with use and edits requested will be impossible.
AI creators will NEVER be able to make a move unless us artists make a move first. They will always be behind in the industry.
AI creators lack the fundamental skills of art and therefore cannot detect when something looks off in a composition. Many professional artists like me get hired repeatedly for a reason! WE as artists know what we're doing.
The art community is close-knit and can fund itself. Look at furry commissions, Patreon, art conventions, Hollywood. Real art will always be able to make money and find an audience because it's how we communicate as a species.
AI creators lack the passion and ambition to make a career out of AI prompts. Not that they couldn't start drawing at any time, but these tend to be the people who don't enjoy creating art to begin with.
There is no story or personal experience that can be shared about AI prompts so paying customers will lose interest quickly.
Art is needed to help advance society along, history says so. To do that, companies will need to hire artists (music, architecture, photography, design, etc). The best way for us artists to keep fighting for our voice to be heard right now is staying visible. Do not hide or give in! That is what they want. Continue posting online and/or in person and sharing your art with the world. It takes a community and we need you!
