Hehehe 🤭
“So.. you’ve held feelings for him?”
“You could say that, yes.” There was a pause as Esther looked out to the balcony. “But he’s never acknowledged the events of that day. Even the very next morning or day after it happened. And we carried on with the mission until it was seen through. We’ve yet to talk about it to this day. I only wonder what he thinks.”
A snowy battle between some rogue Draconic and the Kingdom of Theraun was dissipating as a blizzard began to take form. Both sides retreated for shelter. A lone voice echoed through the cold winds.
“Parnelle? PARNELLE?” Esther’s voice was cut short once she found him lying stomach-down in the snow. He appeared half buried, his face just barely visible. Eyes shut as though he was in a deep slumber. For an injured Therian, how did he still manage to appear serene and collected. But his image was the least of her concerns. Esther immediately fell to her knees to retrieve him from the snow. “Parnelle wake up! We need to move.” She tried to pull him from the ground, to no avail. She managed to flip his body up. His hair and clothes were cold and soaking. “Parnelle please help me here. At least until we can get to cover, move…” Parnelle finally peered his eyes open. As they locked with Esther’s, it took her aback a moment. His gaze repelling in a cold and stern look. As if he was trying to communicate to her he clearly wanted her away from the grounds. Away from him. She furrowed her brows and took his arm, forcing it around her shoulders. His body was otherwise limp and heavy, but she willed herself to stand with him until he managed to nudge his legs along with a couple grunts.
With minimal words between them, Esther managed to get them to a cabin hidden away in the woods. There were a few scattered within certain points as bases for refuge. She placed him down on the makeshift wooden bed before attempting to get a fire going in the fireplace.
“He left.” Esther’s eyes came up as she turned to face Parnelle who finally uttered a word. “He turned his back to me and left. Left me in my condition. Fulfilling an empty oath, more a desire.” Sitting up, Parnelle ran his hand through his hair. What came out held between his fingers was a singular beige feather. “Next I see him will be with his neck in my grasp.”
“Parnelle-“
“Wings split in half.”
“Hey-“
“His excuses will remain in his throat I swear it-“
“Parnelle listen to me.” Esther took his hands in hers. “You know Hadraniel as well as I do. He would never do such a thing for solely personal gain or as a slight to you.”
“I told him to stand down-“
“And he left anyway I know. I’m sure he was acting with your best interest in mind-“
“His best interest. He left me as you found me Esther,” he exclaimed as he stood from the bed. “We can no longer continue to excuse him. He’ll face repercussions. We can’t keep protecting him, I can’t keep protecting him.” The room fell silent. Parnelle’s look became distant before he rubbed his eyes. His body subtly trembled.
“Save your strength. You are severely fatigued, cold and wet. We must put these up to dry or we’ll never get warm.” Esther sat him down as she began to undo his coat. He watched silently as she tossed his coat aside then went to the clasp of his shirt. Once she caught his eyes, she glanced down at her hands before raising them. “Sorry, I’m sure you can manage the rest.” She swiftly turned and headed to a corner by the fireplace she had placed her supplies down at. She took off her own coat and hung it up. Parnelle at this point had already looked away to remove the rest of his clothes. Being a Faun, Esther could already regulate her temperature, but her fur needed to get dried off. On the bed she only found one blanket. With her arms crossed over her bare chest, she shook her head and took the large blanket and wrapped it over her shoulders. She sat in front of the fireplace then extended one arm, holding the blanket open as she stared ahead. “Come.” Parnelle looked on for a moment and gave a sigh. He moved carefully as he sat next to her, wrapping the other side of the blanket over his shoulder as they shared. They both stared ahead at the fire. It was painfully obvious Parnelle just appeared more exposed then she did. The body heat that came from her fur was already more helpful. Silence continued to linger throughout the cabin. “Do you.. wish to lay down?” The silence persisted in the air. Esther rose a brow as she glanced to Parnelle. His gaze was fixed solemn onto the fire. His head tilted up acknowledgingly. He shook his head. Esther’s eyes moved back to the fire. “I’m sure.. things will improve in the morning,” Esther began. “It’s too cold for any unwarranted attacks, and the storm should clear so we can see our friends again.” Esther noticed as he continued to tremble, but his gaze remained solid. He held up the feather between his fingers again. Esther’s brows furrowed.
“How will I bring myself to see them again. When all they ever do is act irrationally to defend me. All of you,” Parnelle said. He flicked the feather away, letting it drift into the fire.
“As much as it pains you to hear; it is our duty to defend the Prince of Theraun.” A light scoff came from his throat. “But duty and status or no, we would give our life for you regardless. Since we know you would do the same, as our friend.” There was a brief pause between them. “So yes, we would still risk our lives and do reckless things for you even if you weren’t the Prince. I know I would.” Parnelle’s head began to nod, his trembling more apparent. For a moment Esther thought he was brought to tears. She moved his face toward her. His face was flushed and he was hot to the touch. He was developing a fever. “Let me get you some water.” Esther stood and put a dry shawl over her shoulders and chest. In her supplies she found a flask of water.
“You take it, I can change into the Beast and preserve energy,” Parnelle said.
“Are you insane? Changing into the Beast will finish you off for good right now. It’s more energy to turn than you would possibly hold as the Beast.”
“Perhaps we’d all be better off for it.” Esther gave a scowl as she stormed over to him. She gripped the blanket and tugged him harshly. She shoved the flask by his face.
“If you don’t take this water I’ll be inclined to agree with you.”
“Then we’d be on the same page. You should have left me in the snow and sought cover of your own.” Esther huffed. She acted blindly and took some water into her mouth. She held his face and crashed his lips to hers. Once he managed to swallow the water she passed, he gasped for air. He stared at her wide eyed.
“You really need to be fed and watered like a child? Like the pampered prince?” She glared back into his eyes. He promptly took the flask from her hand.
They sat next to each other under the blanket once again. Parnelle continued to silently sip on the flask. “When I found you, instead of relief or gratitude, you looked at me with such disdain. Why?”
“Like I said, I wanted you to fend for yourself and seek cover.”
“And like I said. I’ll continue to gladly give my life.” After a moment of pause, Parnelle nudged the flask against her shoulder. Esther turned to him and took it in her hand. Instead of handing it to her, he pulled her hand to his chest and sealed the space between them. After the initial shock, she held his face in her hand and reciprocated the kiss. They held onto each other for a moment longer until they both retracted. They were definitely warmed up.
— Not me blatantly taking direct inspiration from that one cabin scene in The Case Study of Vanitas 🤪. The scene was too darn cute and indulgent I just had to twist it for Esther and Parn 🥰— P.M.
