#I picked S3 #in terms of its theme of changing times S3 got to the peak but not as depressing as in S6 #in terms of my fav character thomas his personal struggles got a lot of explorations #but overall I think all seasons are good #S4 got a bit lost and I got tired of the Bates’ prison drama #still this show is one of the best I’ve ever watched #especially love the character writing and acting #all main characters are very human #and I love what JF said most human beings are just trying their best to get through life #i always feel better about the world and myself after watching the show #we all need shows like this occasionally #downton abbey

the dichotomy of the level of stakes in each episode of Downton Abbey will always be funny to me. Some episodes are like

“Thomas is on the brink of being fired for being gay”

“it’s the actual World War I”

“Sybil could very well die in childbirth”

“Bates has been arrested for a murder he didn’t commit”

“one of the staff caused a MISCARRIAGE of someone from Upstairs”

“Thomas has been found half dead in a self-inflicted bloody bathtub”

And then other episodes are like

“Will Carson let the staff go to the town fair”

“who will win the flower competition”

“The cooks dropped the chicken on the floor”

“Sybil is wearing pants”

“Branson is still fraternizing with the Downstairs”

#how I love this show #the mundane helps to build the characters and dynamics gradually #then when the melodrama comes you really feel for the characters #cuz it makes them feel like real people around you everyday #makes them feel like your family #oh i miss them #downton abbey

Just a minor problem spotted - the one for China is actually a Hong Kong phone number (starting with +852), while the Hong Kong one remains correct, as we have a few more lines here. The thing is,

1) China to HK calls are international calls

2) HK lines are in Cantonese, which the majority of Mainland Chinese people do not speak (they speak Mandarin)

I just googled - the correct line for China should be 400-161-9995. I don’t know how many Chinese people are on this site, but I think it would be nice to update it in the master post, so that everyone can get the help needed. Thanks.

So… I want to talk about this scene and what it means to me:

Despite what happened in the last season, I think Thomas is actually a very pro-life person deep down.

When he held his lighter above the trenches at night, it formed an image like lighting a candle in the dark. However weak the light was, it was the only light in that war zone. In that moment, he was holding onto the little hope that is left.

“There must be more to life than this.”

To him, what brought him to despair years later was never the hatred he received as a gay man, he’s been facing it for such a long time after all. But it was the lost of hope for any chance of living a fulfilling life - a sense of purpose. “I have never felt such a lack of reason. Why am I here? What am I doing?” He asked. The fact that his profession was losing its significance, his teaching was deemed unorthodox, and even an aristocratic gay man can only seek temporary pleasure in a remote place but finally also resorted to an eternal escape… all these had finally led him to realise anything he had dreamt of was only a false hope.

Did he really want life to end? No, I don’t think so. He wanted life to be. He wanted to live - for once, for real. He has tried and tried for so many times over the years, even if it takes to hurt himself so badly. But still he couldn’t. So lastly he took his life with him, hopefully this time to a better place where it can truly be one that’s worth living. It has been a really sad but powerful story.

Now, after all the hard times, I can only hope that his dream has finally come true. True to the end.

"You can portray bad things in fiction if it's done in a negative light!"

maybe this is just me, but the author shouldn't have to hold your hand & tell you explicitly that what's happening in the story is bad.

Sometimes, the narration of the story portrays it as good, or "romanticizes" it because the character narrating is a terrible person. That doesn't mean the author condones it, it means the *character* thinks it's okay!

You should have enough critical thinking skills & media literacy to reach that conclusion on your own, and if you don't, I recommend Disney Junior for your viewing pleasure, rather than adult content.

Don't worry, they'll tell you exactly the lesson they want you to learn over there, in painfully explicit detail.

That might be more your speed.

It’s really nice to see the Thomas Barrow fandom thriving here. Obviously I’m a newbie, and I’m curious to know more about how you guys first came to like Thomas as a character (aka when “the evil one” became “HIM!!!”). So, if I may ask:
