USUK MerMay Fic Recc List

Hey everyone! I really love mermaids and mermaid AUs, and so I wanted to kick MerMay off by compiling a list of my favorite (mostly not safe for work ;p) USUK mermaid au fics that this fandom has to offer! So, in no particular order, heres a list of mystical mermaid fics for all you USUK fans to enjoy this month!

1. Before They Learn to Swim by Threnna

Alfred F. Jones is a navy captain, capturing law disobedient individuals at the governments bidding. One day, this brings him across a very special belonging to one such villain. A merman. Which he is to bring across the ocean without any misfortune.

I haven't finished reading this one yet but its one of the highest rated usuk longfics hosted on fanfiction.net, and so far its really good! Its very well written and its interesting to see Alfred in a navy position in this type of historical fantasy AU instead of Arthur.

2. If You Love Something by Zo One

It will come back.

Ahh man I think this was the fic that really started my cravings for merman content awhile back LOL, I really just love Zo One's writing in general and this fic is no exception. Content warnings: dubcon and noncon at first (siren call stuff); if thats not your thing please heed the warning or proceed with caution.

3. My Lover Smells Like Fish by Snowyfoxpaws

Really fun, really cute human!Alfredxmerman!Arthur fic! And also its snowy so expect p0rn in there-

7. Clockwork by Snowyfoxpaws

Well-oiled gears in a machine that never stops running. Perpetual and haunting, a world with no purpose but to devour. As a Gifted, Alfred has taken it upon himself to rescue the kidnapped and the captured, each acquisition to his supernatural collection a soul he can attempt to mend, but everything changes when he begins his newest project—rekindling the will to live in the heart of a merman. I haven't actually started this one yet because I try and avoid readings works that will basically never be finished lol, but I really love all of Snowy's content so when I get desperate to read something I'll probably read through this in an instant and wish to god that they came back to finish it LOL

Elevator of Doom (Not Love, Not Even Affection) by ArchangelUnmei

Summary: France and England get trapped in an elevator, which leads (predictably) to a fight and (less predictably) to a trip down memory lane.

Comment: I've been dipping my toe in different pairs and, of the fics recommended to me, this was a definite fav. The hilarious yet cranky banter is perfectly in-character for an old-married couple ship such as this. ^^

You sure can! The requirements for submitting a story include providing an accessible link, therefore you only need have the link copied from the Tumblr post.

As to your question about submitting your own works: Absolutely! And while the comment is optional you, as the author, could include some of your writing process or what inspired the story rather than a reader’s review.

Chiaroscuro by Diane Long

Summary: Alfred is exhausted and weary from carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders and Arthur is there to give him some TLC and build him back up.

Comment: One of my favorite authors in the fandom, this piece is my personal pick out of all of their wonderful works. The descriptions and characterization are beautiful and it really is a story worth reading if you haven’t already! Tho this is a bit of a darker take on Al’s character and “care-free” manner. Also Arthur is a real sweetheart.

Comment: I'm just thinking of that one John Mulaney bit about delta airlines. Anyways, this is a good fic. It's pretty cute, a good read. Reread it to properly comment on it and have no regrets

Summary: I dreamt this up one night and made my best friend turn it into a fanfiction.

Comment: Sealand wants to do something fun for Halloween and gets Ukraine to help plan, who drags Belarus into it. Goes about as well as expected, aka horribly. This is a personal favorite, and a fic I think everyone should read, if you aren’t too terribly against the idea of temporary character death and their s/o and friends and family seeing them dead. It ends well, but is a bit sad along the way

Comment: honestly recommend anything by AuthorReinvented, and will definitely be submitting some more of my faves by them, but in this one Matthew gets in a trainwreck and Alfred freaks a little. It’s from an outside pov, which I think is pretty cool

Comment: Very cute and fluffy. Arthur is very stubborn and rude at first but then he softens up. Is a bit too fast-paced for my liking, but still good. Despite the description it was posted back in 2018. So a bit older, but not that old

Summary: He could not beat them, those imperialists, so he joined them himself. In the glory of the Rising Sun, he almost did not realize what he had lost, or what he had never found. Longish character study of Japan and his relationship with China, from the beginning of his Westernization to the end of WW2.

Comment: This fic blew my mind. Like, really blew it. It’s so thoroughly researched and the characterization is fantastic. There’s a lot of symbolism that translated the history just perfectly and explored Japan’s perspective as he meets the western world, following his intro with America, complicated relationship with China, alliance with Britain, and much, much more! I highly recommend this fanfic, it’s just such an amazing read! :)
