can somebody with a better grip on japanese explain how tf does ローライト get to "Lawliet"???? bc the katakana is "ro-raito", right? could just be my accent but i cant think of a way "Lawliet" would end up pronounced like that. also "light" is spelled in katakana as ライト (raito) with literally the exact same characters as the end of Ls.name anyway what im trying to say is that their names r literally "Light" and 'Lowlight" like that must have been so embarrassing for L to know that they had matchy soulmate names the whole time. AND RYUK. crikey

yk ive actually tried looking rlly hard for why hes named that and I cant fine ANYTHING. Its not a preestablished name or anything at keast not commonly. His name doesnt use kanji characyers either it uses I THINK hiragana? idk ik kanji usually looks more complicated n hid name is written as エル・ローライト. When out into google translate lawliet comes out as "low light" but it may be mistaking it as a loan word or smth. My man Ohba WHAT was the idea there !!!!!!!!

oooh I'd be really happy to see a list of older fics. got a question, what was the fandom's reaction to L's real name being revealed?

oh fantastic!! i love making rec lists, so i'll try to put one together at some point this week. in terms of L's real name being revealed (in english), what i remember was basically lots of excitement about the upcoming reveal, then a lot of bewilderment and frustration because his first name was literally just 'L.' there was also a lot of confusion about how to pronounce his last name, since you can kind of pick your poison with the english version, and the japanese version (ローライト) is either ro-raito or lowlight. i feel like everyone has more-or-less settled on lowlight, but roraito was a pretty solid contender for a while. also a lot of arguments that this was solid proof lawlight was real since the name is like. low-light. coded messages. idk that was silly both then and now, but i also think that sort of thing was more common back then due to the absolute dearth of canon gay content. this information had also been available in japanese for something like two years, but there was both more and less transmission between the english and japanese fandom, so it was still a surprise to a lot of people. this is 100% just my experience, though. i feel like fandom was a lot more segmented back then, since amalgamated fandom spaces like tumblr & twitter were either in their infancy or just nonexistent.
