長野滝

今回のテーマは駅でも船でもなく、純粋に滝の名所を取り上げていこうと思います。（「たき」といえば、こちらの場所もおすすめです）まずは長野滝の場所から。国道328号線を鹿児島市小山田から入来峠を越え、坂を下ったところに一瞬ですが「長野滝」という看板が見えてきます。山之口交差点を右折、県道395号線を蒲生方面に進みます。すると看板が出てくるので看板の指示通りに進めば大丈夫でしょう。ただし、滝の近くに大型車は進入できないのでご注意ください。「西郷どん」ロケ地「長野滝（ながののたき）」は2018年に放送されたNHK大河ドラマ「西郷どん」のロケ地として一躍有名になりました。手書きの看板。こちらはデザインされた看板。撮影日や撮影の様子が書かれていました。ドラマ放映後、来訪者が増えてきているようです。私も数度訪れていますが、常に誰か観光客や三脚を据えて…

Kindred Spirits 知音: "The One Who Truly Understands Your Songs"

For #AroWeek, I want to talk about the Chinese term 知音 (pronounced zhīyīn in Mandarin), which has influenced my thinking about queerplatonic relationships. zhī 知: to know, knowing yīn 音: music, sound literally, a zhīyīn is someone who "truly understands your songs"

the term zhīyīn comes from a story about finding a kindred spirit through music.

There are many versions of the story. Here's one version:

One day, the musician Yu Boya was playing a qin (see image) in the wilderness, when he met Zhong Ziqi.

When Boya played one song, Ziqi immediately understood it and described it as reflecting the mood of soaring mountains (高山). When Boya played another song, Ziqi also comprehended immediately and described it as creating the mood of flowing waters (流水). Ziqi could understand all of Boya's songs. When Ziqi passed away, Boya felt so distressed that he destroyed his qin and never played it again. Boya thought of Ziqi as a "zhīyīn," and that term continues to be widely used to this day.

In a modern context, the term of "zhīyīn" is often translated into English as a soulmate, a kindred spirit, or a very close friend, but at its core, it's a term that refers to a type of intensely emotional, spiritual, and platonic connection with someone.

The original songs played by Boya have been long lost to the passage of time, but musicians and composers have tried to imagine what the songs might have sounded like.

There's even a recording of "Flowing Waters" (流水) included on the Voyager Golden Record, symbolically helping humankind search for a zhīyīn as it drifts around in outer space.

For me, as an aspec (demiromantic, biromantic, and asexual) Sino diaspora femme, the idea of zhīyīn offers me a way to think about the concept of queerplatonic relationships, given that it's very similar to the idea of a soulmate but without the necessary romantic connotations of the word in English. The concept of zhīyīn is explored again and again in various Sinophone literature and popular media, from wuxia and xianxia c-dramas to poetry that alludes explicitly or indirectly to zhīyīn.

MLCB Concert: XSY's Farewell

In truth, I really don’t like this part, because it also represents that we are bidding our characters farewell for good.

In the morning, when I was getting my makeup done - in an instant, I returned to that summer. I felt that, to be together with good friends, and then having experienced as sweltering a summer as that…

Such an ardently hot-blooded jianghu was presented to everyone; to stand here today-- Because… Because, during the time of Mysterious Lotus Casebook’s initial broadcast, everyone and all the lianluorens must also be thanked. I know there must have been a lot of difficulties when it was first broadcasted, right? To have reached this step today, I think is already very good. I think it is a result of every person’s hard work.

Just now, when we were off-stage, Yan-laoshi said something I really like; in an instant, I lost my composure. I don’t think fate is something that will come with enough waiting, or something that can be insisted on having. It’s when there comes a day where we stand together and work hard to strive toward a common goal. The sentiments of that moment, I feel, last forever.

I hope, however many years later, everyone is still together - that lianluorens can still be together. Thank you, everyone. This summer, thank you to every person. Thank you to all my good companions; thank you, every single person.

There’s not much difference between the sun and the moon, really, not in the end. The sun might be brighter, it might be more magnetic and all consuming and eye catching, so that you can’t help but stare at it even as its light blinds you, the moon might be paler and more damaged, it might be dimmer and easier to stare at for ages, but they’re both the same, in the end. They’re both beautiful yet so so distant, hanging in the sky more precious than any jewel you could want, but they’re unreachable, you could leap into the sky, you could throw yourself into the sea just to catch its mirage, but you’ll never touch them. That’s okay though, because even as you plummet from the sky or sink into the depths of the ocean, you can derive comfort from the way their light caressed you for an instant. And that makes it all worth it, doesn't it?
