Part 2

Chapter 14

-starless hallway-

haseyama: So we've finally reached the Demon King's castle huh... You call this place a castle? It's just the store isn't it?

strongest sorcerer (lico): The store?

haseyama: Never mind. So, where's the Demon King?

strongest sorcerer: Who knows. He's probably chilling in a large room somewhere right?

warrior (kokuyou): Let's try that room. I'm sensing something is in there.

-starless restaurant area-

warrior: Hm? Is that a treasure chest over there?

haseyama: A chest in the Demon King's castle you say? Allow me to open it... Oh? What's this? Gold?

strongest sorcerer: Ooh, I knew loot from this castle would be good. That's a gold pendant...

-kokuyou runs in front of them-

warrior: —Get down, quick!!

haseyama: Woah!?

-zakuro attacks kokuyou-

??? (zakuro): My oh my, I did not calculate that you would be able to predict my attack. The Hero party's strength is no lie.

haseyama: Who are you?

-taiga appears-

poison fang of the north (taiga): That's my automaton. It's being controlled by my puppeteer magic. Sorry for ruining your fun after you just arrived, but you'll be becoming my creation’s prey.

strongest sorcerer: It's a doll? Is that why it's moving in such a creepily unnatural way?

??? (zakuro): My my, there is no need to address me in such a rude manner.

poison fang of the north: Just ignore them. Now go, HAK=T=M! Defeat the Hero!

HAK=T=M (zakuro): Indeed, indeed!

-zakuro attacks-

warrior: How annoying, don't get any closer.

-kokuyou fights back-

HAK=T=M: Ough!! I-indeed... indee... indedededede...de...zzzt...

-zakuro shuts down-

haseyama: What's this? It only took one hit to take it out?

poison fang of the north: H-HAK=T=M~!!

warrior: Well then, looks like it's your turn to get punched in the face.

poison fang of the north: Ah, no, I surrender. Please let me join your side.

haseyama: What?

poison fang of the north: I stand no chance in a 3v1. My motto is 'if you can't beat them, join them'. I don't actually care about being one of the Demon King's great leaders or whatever.

strongest sorcerer: Wow, this guy really just threw his weapon down without hesitation. Does he have no pride?

poison fang of the north: Anyways, that warrior you've got on your team is real strong. I respect his ability. Is it ok if I refer to you as 'big bro'? I want to work for you.

warrior: Sure thing.

poison fang of the north: Thanks! Here, I'll cast some buffing spells on you.

warrior: Do whatever you want.

poison fang of the north: —No, by God Keep rolling Feel it in my bones...

strongest sorcerer: Huh? That spell... Watch out!!

haseyama: ...!? What do you mean!?

poison fang of the north: —No exit!

-spell is cast-

warrior: ...!?

-room explodes-

-starless hallway-

strongest sorcerer: Shit that was close, he used explosion magic. If I'd been caught up in that I'd be dead! I'm done with this dangerous mission, I'm leaving!

-cut back to restaurant area, place is destroyed-

warrior: ...Fuck that hurt. That wasn't a buff, you asshole.

poison fang of the north: What!? You're alive...? How is that possible!?

warrior: Kuku, you wanted to call me big bro right? Well as your big brother how about I correct that rebellious behaviour of yours? Come with me.

poison fang of the north: Ky-kyaahhh!? Where do you plan on taking me...!?

-kokuyou drags taiga away-

-starless hallway-

haseyama: (coughing) ...Godammit. Was that explosion just now caused by magic or something? The path I came in from has caved in... Oi, is anyone there!?

haseyama: .......

haseyama: ...So they all ditched me in the final stretch huh? Those damn brats! Well, it can't be helped I guess... I'll just have to do something about this myself. Hah, reminds me of when I was a kid. I'd rush into raids all on my own...

-haseyama's office-

haseyama: Come on out, Demon King! Where are you at? Show yourself already!

-takami appears-

??? (takami): Welcome, Hero. So you've made it this far.

haseyama: Hah, you're the Demon King then? I see, I'm gonna wipe that smug smile off your face.

??? (unei): W-wait! He's not the Demon King, I am!!

haseyama: ...What!? You? Aren't you just Unei!?

??? (unei): (clears throat) Indeed... I am the one who soars in the sky decorated with white stars, the king of everlasting darkness who reigns over the demon world from my throne— It is I, The Demon King of the White Star Realm! The strongest, most fearsome Demon King who rules over this land!

haseyama: That's one lame name you've given yourself.

demon king (unei): Come, Hawklook, destroy the Hero!

hawklook (takami): Yes, my lord.

saki: Wait, p-please stop this!

haseyama: So the princess really was you after all, young lady.

demon king: It is fine, princess. I shall defeat the Hero, so watch closely.

saki: (Nothing about this is fine though...)

hawklook: Let us fight. I'll make you bow before the Demon King, dear Hero.

haseyama: Uwah!? He's so fast!

mob class demon: Allow me to help you, Hawklook-sama~! There's no way the Hero can win against our numbers~!

haseyama: Huh!? I have to deal with those weak ass mobs too?

hawklook: Is this really the time to take your eyes off me?

haseyama: Guh... Ah, shut up!

mob class demon: The Hero is backed into a corner! We're sure to win at this rate~!

demon king: Kukuku... I wouldn't count the Hero out yet. You agree, don't you princess?

saki: Um... Could you stop fighting now...?

demon king: Of course not, its almost time for my debut! Watch me, princess! It's showtime!

haseyama: ...!?

demon king: 'White Wish'... Assemble the darkness, Starry Love!

-unei casts magic-

haseyama: Uwah... Aaghhhhh!!

-screen goes white-

Chapter 16

-haseyama's office-

-screen flashes red-

haseyama: Sh..it...

demon king: Haahahahahah!! The Hero is no more~!!

haseyama: Being done in by Unei... How could something like this... happen...?

-haseyama collapses-

-white screen, kei appears-

king (kei): Hah, how unsightly.

haseyama: You...! Kei you damn... Wait no, you were that unreasonable king right?

king: So in the end this is how much a man like you could achieve. You were truly nothing but a disgraceful man who was only a hero in name.

haseyama: Excuse me!?

king: Even though it was faint, I was a fool for expecting anything great from you. Giving you that legendary sword was a grave mistake. There was no way you could've become a hero.

haseyama: You're the asshole who summoned me here in the first place! Quit talking crap and just return me to my world already!

king: Oh? So you still have the strength to snap back at me? In that case, stand back up, Hero. Use the true power of that blade, the 'Stein Schwartz'... Show them the skill of legend—

haseyama: What...!?

-haseyama's office-

hawklook: What would you like me to do, Demon King-sama? Shall I finish him off with a stab to the heart?

demon king: Uhh, I don't think we need to go that far... While he's still unconscious let's just dump him outside the castle...

mob class demon: Leave throwing him outside to me~!

saki: Um, so the fighting is done now?

haseyama: ...Ah... Damn it...

mob class demon: Oh, Demon King-sama, the Hero seems to have awoken.

demon king: What? Then whack him unconscious again—!

haseyama: Tch, I just have to win huh?

hawklook: Oh my, you can still stand?

demon king: Huh, you're gonna fight again? I'd really wish you'd just surrender already though...

haseyama: ...Unei, I think it's about time I put you back in your place!

demon king: Whaaat!?

-flash of light-

demon king: W-what's that? The Hero's sword is glowing...!?

haseyama: It's shining with my ultimate skill! Blow them away— Scarlet Desire!!

-screen goes white-

mob class demon: Aaaahhh~! He's got us~!!

-kasumi disappears-

hawklook: Guh...! So this is the Hero's ultimate skill...! This is where I withdraw.

-takami disappears-

demon king: Aaaahhhh... Uwaaaahhhhhhh~!!

-credits roll-

Chapter 17

-starless office-

saki: (waking up) Mm... Hm? This is...

unei: Ah, are you awake, Saki-san? You'll catch a cold if you sleep in here!

saki: Oh... Please excuse me.

saki: (I fell asleep... So was all of that just a dream?)

unei: So um, by the way, how was it?

saki: Hm? How was what...?

unei: Whaat, did you not even read it? I'm talking about the novel I wrote about myself being a hero!

saki: Oh.

saki: (That's right, I vaguely remember I had been reading a fantasy novel that Unei-san wrote.)

unei: Was it no good...? I tried my best at drawing the map of the world as well...

saki: Ah, no, I didn't mean to imply that. I thought it was a very interesting novel.

unei: Really? I'm so glad, thank you! I thought the same when I tried designing those outfits, but creating something yourself is really fun. Since I ended up writing so much I'm going to publish it on a web novel site.

saki: That sounds like a good idea.

unei: I want to keep challenging myself by trying new things. Because I'd be happy if any of those skills end up becoming beneficial for the store!

saki: Fufu, do your best.

unei: Ah... Oh right! I had to discuss something with Yakou-san. I have to step out for a bit, you can stay in the office however long you need to, Saki-san!

saki: Thank you.

-unei leaves-

-aogiri walks in-

aogiri: Hello, Saki-san. I see you're awake now.

saki: Yes, sorry about that. I accidentally dozed off.

aogiri: It's no trouble at all. Were you reading that book? It was an interesting story, wasn't it? Though, I did find Unei-san being the Demon King to be a little unbelievable.

saki: That's true— No, wait, but I'm pretty sure Unei-san was the hero in the novel...

aogiri: Fufu. The truth is… I'm also capable of casting some magic. Whether you want to believe it or not is up to you.

ooo this is such a great question anon! thanks for asking, bud, i've never got this before! Since this question was sent to my animanga blog, i'm going to just answer about couples in fandoms i rb on here!

Even though it seems like I go hard for non-canon couples (which believe me I do), there are so many canon couples that I actually love with my entire heart:

hak/yona (akatsuki no yona)

even though i still have to catch up to this manga, this couple has owned my heart since the moment they appeared on page. they are the definition of a true power couple who will go to the ends of the world to save one another. they throw themselves into danger just so the other can have the chance of safety. they've got one another's back through everything and anything. they will yell at one another but hold hands together side by side as they stand staring down their enemies. i just love how hak inspires yona to stand on her own and yona inspires hak to see the value in himself.

sakura/syaoran (cardcaptor sakura)

they're one of my top three childhood couples. they are just adorable and precious and they deserve only good things ever. they are just children who don't deserve to shoulder so much on their shoulders and yet they do it with minimal complaining. they are there for one another, especially through the hardest moments. he's her pillar and she's his heart. also they jumpstarted my pink x green shipping and i will always love them so much.

inuyasha/kagome (inuyasha)

they are also one of my top three childhood couples. they are everything. inuyasha sees the strength in kagome's compassion when she doesn't see it herself and kagome sees the softness in inuyasha's toughness that he doesn't let others see. they are one of the it couples. they fight, push one another to the edge, and bring one another back without another word. inuyasha's unwavering belief in kagome allows her to grow into a fucking warrior of a girl because his strength keeps her going and growing. kagome accepts all of inuyasha, which is huge for him because he's been accepted by neither world because he's never been enough for either world. but there comes kagome, not giving a shit about the worlds beliefs and going with what she believes in and that's him. it's beautiful.

lan wangji/wei wuxian (mo dao zu shi)

i'm going to cheat here because i haven't finished watching the anime but i have read the novel and watched the live-action show. i have been shipping them ever since i watched the show first because anyone who knows me knows that i love the red x blue ship aesthetic. i love how they went from strangers to friends to enemies (but not really) to lovers. it's a classic trope and i will always love it. the fact that lwj recognized wwx when he came back?? that's true love. lwj is there to support wwx when he doesn't want anyone to see him falling and wwx is there to break down lwj's world, to show that there's more to the world than just blindly following rules. the fact that they went from star-crossed lovers to being married is just the best thing ever. they are filled with all the angst AND they get their happy ending.

On to my non-canon couples (they are kept alive in my heart thanks to ao3):

dabihawks (boku no hero academia)

i will say that i have dropped bnha for now (unless two characters die, in which case i'll definitely pick it back up) but that being said, the fact that dabi grew up the child of a hero and turned to villainy while hawks grew up the child of a criminal and turned to heroism? this shit is so poetic. they are parallel lines moving in the opposite direction, ships in the night, opposites attract in such a hellish way. not only is their aesthetic red vs. blue but it's also angel vs. devil - the hero with the wings bathed in the colour of blood vs. the villain with the flames bathed in the colour of the sky. they've got an apollo/icarus vibe that i love so much. there's so much mutual destruction and they had so much potential to be even more insane than they already are.

soukoku (bungou stray dogs)

they are probably my otp of otp's right now, the ones that really kicked the whole red/blue shipping out of control for me. they are idiotic strangers to idiotic frenemies to idiotic enemies to idiotic partners forever. it's so poetic to me that dazai's ability is named no longer human and yet he's the one to bring back chuuya's humanity to him. i just really love that chuuya, who feels so brutally human so much of the time, hosts a god of calamity and can only be brought back to himself by dazai's touch. like point me to a better lvoe story than that? you can't because they are the epitome of catastrophic love. they don't judge one another's actions because they understand one another better than anyone else can. they are each other's weakness and each other's strength. they will destroy one another before anyone else can get the chance.

He's relieved she's not afraid of him anymore, though he's not too crazy about the idea of her being in danger for that to happen...

Masterlist

"Watch out!" Y/N doesn't have enough time to duck out of the way. She freezes as the man comes barrelling her way, sword raised, vicious snarl on his face.

The blow never comes.

Instead, she's swept into someone's side, an arm around her waist. Cracking an eye open, she startles when she sees Kija's dragon hand creating a shield in front of them, blocking the enemy out.

The yell from the other side indicates Hak has already taken care of the guy. She watches as Kija's hand shrinks back to it's normal size, still clutching onto the side of his robe.

For as long as she can remember, Y/N has always been afraid of Kija. Well, not him, more like his dragon hand. She remembers watching him break logs of massive firewood into half easily, and thinking how effortlessly he could snap a person into two.

Right now, however, all she can look at and think about, is the way his scales shimmered under the sun, pristine and regal. When he moved his hands, the scales gleamed beautifully, matching Kija's poise perfectly. How could something that could hurt be so beautiful?

"Are you hurt?" His voice snaps her out of it.

"No. Thanks for helping me out there." She smiles, still a little shaken. Kija's eyes travel down to where she's clutching onto him and he flushes a little.

"O-of course."

Once they take care of the bandits and trek back to their camp, Y/N has to endure a good scolding from Yoon.

The boy had decided to stay back at the camp, and had been quite displeased when Y/N had wanted to go with the others, despite the danger.

Just as Yoon took care of the practical stuff at camp, Y/N acted more like a strategist for the group. She was great at coming up with plans and weeding out the possible pro's and con's of a strategy. That was how she contributed, usually staying back at where they were camping.

"You got quote an earful." Y/N looks up as Kija takes a seat next to her. Everyone's gathered around the fire, enjoying their free time. They've decided to wait until tomorrow to start moving again, the sun having already dipped below the horizon.

"I'm...glad I went." She says, eyes darting down to his hand. Kija notices the action.

"I've...noticed you seem a little uncomfortable around me." He frowns. "I know my hand is quite...strange, but-"

"No!" She cuts him off, eyes wide. "Not at all!"

"But-"

"I'm glad I went today, because when you shielded me I-..." she trails off, before mustering up the courage to continue, the tips of her ears turning red. "I thought you were amazing."

Kija himself takes on a shade of light pink.

"O-oh. Thank you." He notices how her eyes dart back to his hand. It takes a few moments, but she finally makes up his mind.

"May I...?" She reaches out and points to his hand. Kija nods and slowly brings his scaled hand up, letting her reach out and touch his palm gently.

The action sends shivers don his spine. He's not used to this hand being treated so delicately. It's always bringing people down to breaking things. Never so gently...

"See? I'm not afraid." She offers him a shy smile, one that makes his heart skip a beat. Her own heart speeds up when his fingers curl around hers gently.

Y/N wonders how something so strong could be so gentle. The scales feel smooth and cool against her skin and she the fire illuminates them in a way that makes them look lovely, contrasting the darkness surrounding them.

"I'm glad." She can make out his small smile, almost relieved.

Strong, yet gentle, she decides. She could live with this.

i just read your recent post of knt and ohmygod. oh god. i really feel like crying :') it's gonna end soon and they all are gonna part ways. can't wait to see the ending esp for the side couples!! anyway, i'm really into friends-to-lovers stories, can you recommend some animes/mangas that are based on that? i need to distract myself from knt ;-; thank you sm for bringing us updates and everything!!

Hey @chokokonhanbin!! I’m sorry for replying so late!

I’m crying right there withyou!! Even though the story has been winding down for about a year nowthis announcement really makes the impending conclusion seem real… While I’mgoing to miss the series a ton, I really can’t wait to see how Shiina wraps everythingup for our main characters! She’s been working on this series for over tenyears, so I’m sure she’ll take great care with the ending. And hopefully we’llget that heavily foreshadowed timeskip epilogue so that we can see them allworking and married and having babies (omg!!).

Friends-to-loversstories are the best! I’ve compiled a list for you of some anime and manga thatI think fit that category, although some of these might be a bit of a stretch.I tried to pick series in which the relationship isn’t mutually romantic fromthe very beginning (of course, sometimes one harbors secret feelings for theother, as in the case of Ryu and Chizu :D). Many of the series I’m recommending are not “romances” but they do contain romantic subplots and relationships.

Theremay be some small spoilers in here, but I’ll try not to give anything majoraway - just enough for you to see if you might be interested.

Let’stalk more under the cut…

ANIME

1. Akatsuki no Yona (Yona ofthe Dawn)

Thisseries is a really popular shoujo about a sheltered young princess, Yona, whois forced to flee her kingdom after her father, the king, is murdered. Shenarrowly escapes with the help of her childhood friend / bodyguard, Hak,and the two set out on a long and dangerous journey…

I’veonly seen the anime adaptation, but the story is really great; Yona grows a lot and hasexcellent character development. Her relationship with Hak is also reallywell-done - if you like protective male love interests who would die for the girls they love, I think you’ll enjoy this!

(Bonus,she collects a lot of male friends throughout the story, so if you’re intoreverse harems…)

2. Gosick

Ifyou’re a fan of mysteries with a little gothic flair, you might really enjoyGosick! The story is set in the first half of the 20th century at a fancyacademy in the fictional European country of Sauville. Kazuya Kujou, a bulliedstudent at the school, meets a mysterious, doll-like girl in the library - thetwo lonely teens gradually become friends while unraveling all kinds of mysteries.

Thisseries has some dark elements, although I don’t remember it being too graphicor intense. The two main characters come to rely on each other, and theirrelationship is really sweet.

3. Kiznaiver

Ican’t say too much about this one without getting into spoiler territory, butit’s about a group of teenagers, all from different backgrounds and social circles, who arebrought together as part of a secret experiment. The story is literally allabout feelings (literally haha), and there’s a lot of falling in love and romantic angst. While I would say the story is primarily focused on the natureof friendship and empathy, there are a few friends to lovers pairings…

4. Shinsekai yori

Thisis an incredible, thought-provoking story, and I highly recommend it for that.If you like dystopian / sci-fi settings and themes, this will probably appeal to you -again, I don’t want to give too much away, but there are a few friends tolovers relationships. Though I wouldn’t call this series a romance, it does explorehuman relationships, and consequently, romantic relationships do receive a fair amount of focus.

5. Toradora!

Toradorais, in my opinion, one of the best romance series out there. The two maincharacters are both outcasts, for different reasons; Ryuuji is a kind, gentleboy with an intimidating face, while Taiga is prickly and aggressive in spiteof her small stature. These two unlikely friends unite to help each other findlove - Ryuuji has a crush on Taiga’s best friend, Minori, and Taiga has a crushon Ryuuji’s best friend, Yuusaku. Their relationship is developed really well,and there are a lot of really emotional moments. Can’t recommend it enough!

6. The Rose of Versailles

Anoldie but such a goodie! This series from the 1970s takes place in pre-revolutionaryFrance and follows Oscar de Jarjayes, a girl from a noble family who hasbeen raised as a boy from birth. The only biologically female guard at court,Oscar is assigned to protect the newly arrived future queen of France: the verykind, but very naive, Marie Antoinette.

Thisseries is completely amazing. Oscar is an incredible and complex character whowrestles with her gender identity while kicking ass and thwarting all kinds ofassassination plots. Plus, there’s a pretty complicated relationship with herbest friend since childhood, Andre… If you like history, drama, courtscheming, sword fights, old school bishies, sparkles, and tons of angst, I think you’ll enjoy this. I will warnyou, this is not a happy or light-hearted series (French Revolution) and it’skind of on the long side (40 episodes).

MANGA

1.Hotaru no Hikari

Hotaru is a young woman in her late 20s whose social life is practicallynonexistent; she loves nothing more than lounging around at home in casualclothes, eating junk food, reading manga, and sleeping. She finds herself living in a house that is owned and occupied by her handsome 40 year-old boss, Takano; though he likes to pick on her for being a “dried up woman”, he always helps her through the problems in her messy love life.

Hotaru and Takano are at very different points in their lives, but they become such good friends over the course of the series; they feel completely relaxed and at home when they’re together. Will this unconventional friendship blossom into something more…?

2. Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare

This manga is by the author of “Ao Haru Ride” and “Strobe Edge” and is currently serialized in Bessatsu Margaret, alongside “Kimi ni Todoke.” The story revolves around 4 high school students, two girls and two boys. One female protagonist, Yuna, is a shy but sweet girl who loves shoujo manga and has a very idealistic view of love. The other, Akari, is a bit more jaded and has had experience with relationships, giving her a slightly more cynical, realistic perspective. Rio is Akari’s stepbrother, and though Yuna has a crush on him, he’s secretly been in love with Akari since before their parents started dating. Kazuomi is Yuna’s childhood friend, who despite his seemingly carefree nature, has a lot going on under the surface.

Both pairings begin as friends and are still building towards romantic relationships. It’s interesting to see how the characters change through their interactions with each other - it’s a great high school shoujo, and I think the characters are fairly complex for teenagers.

3. Koiiji

This series is a pretty mature love story. The main character, Mame, is a 30 year old woman who has harbored unrequited feelings for her childhood friend, 35 year old father and widower, Souta. Throughout her life she has confessed to him, only to be turned down; still, she continues to love him.

The story is not sugary or idealistic - it feels very grounded in reality, even if that reality is complicated and at times disappointing. Souta doesn’t magically fall for Mame, and her love may come to nothing in the end. But the story is really interesting, and the characters are pretty well-realized - they’re always capable of surprising themselves and the reader. If you want a more realistic, bittersweet story, then I think you might enjoy this.

I hope some of these series interest you! Looking at this list I realized I don’t actually watch / read too many friends to lovers stories - but I do really enjoy them, and these in particular had relationships that stood out to me.
