Born in London on January 24, 1664, Sir John Vanbrugh, was an English architect and dramatist; perhaps best remembered as the designer of Castle Howard; so fantastical a building, unparalleled in England, with its facades and roofs decorated by pilasters, statuary and flowing ornamental carving, ensuring English Baroque became an overnight success.

An alumnus of the King's School, Chester, Vanbrugh was appointed to the post of Clarenceux King of Arms in March 1704, knighted in 1714, and was in many senses a radical throughout his life.

As a young man, he was part of the scheme known as the 'Glorious Revolution', in which James II (a Roman Catholic), was deposed and replaced with William III (a Protestant). He was imprisoned by the French as a political prisoner, and the sexual explicitness of his plays offended many sections of 18th century society.

A committed Whig, Vanbrugh was a member of the Kit-Cat Club, where he was popular for 'his colossal geniality, great good humour and easy-going temperament'. The Club (sometimes also referred to as the Kit-Kat Club), being an early 18th-century social gathering point for culturally and politically prominent artists, writers and politicians, including the Duke of Marlborough, the Earl of Burlington, Viscount Cobham, and Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle.

Sir John died on March 26, 1726. He rests in his family's vault in the church of St Stephen Walbrook; a London church famed for its English Baroque style.

El Femás del Mesías

[El Collegium 1704 clausurará el Femás en el Maestranza la mañana del Domingo de Ramos. / D. S.]

La 41 edición del Festival de Música Antigua de Sevilla ofrecerá 21 espectáculos diferentes entre el 1 y el 24 de marzo en dos sedes principales: el Espacio Turina y la iglesia de San Luis

Como todos los años, tarde y por tanto mal, se ha presentado la programación del Festival de Música Antigua de Sevilla (FeMÀS) que en su cuadragésima primera edición sigue sin contar con una mínima estructura organizativa propia (así que de dotarlo de más presupuesto o de pensar en crear en torno a él una Fundación o una figura jurídica singular que lo proteja de los vaivenes políticos ni hablamos), lo que lastra de forma incomprensible el desarrollo de uno de los certámenes culturales más antiguos de la ciudad y de los que mejor representan su idiosincrasia en el terreno de las artes, ya que aquí se creó el primer departamento de música antigua en un conservatorio español, aquí florecen algunos de los conjuntos de música antigua más importantes del país y aquí ha arraigado una asociación de amigos de la Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla con un millar de miembros. El Femás de 2024 repite la experiencia del pasado año: su clausura en el Teatro de la Maestranza en la mañana del Domingo de Ramos (24 de marzo). Si en 2023 fue con la Pasión según San Mateo de Bach, este año será con El Mesías de Haendel, una obra que, por una costumbre importada de Estados Unidos, suele interpretarse vinculado a la Navidad, pero que en su origen británico se ofrecía en torno a la Semana Santa y la Pascua. La interpretación correrá a cargo del Collegium 1704 de Václav Luks, el gran conjunto barroco checo, que había pasado ya por la muestra. Por ello, posiblemente el mayor impacto del Festival tenga lugar unos días antes (el martes 12 de marzo), también en el Maestranza, cuando el coro y la orquesta musicAeterna debuten en la ciudad de la mano de su fundador y director Teodor Currentzis para ofrecer un gran programa mozartiano que arranca con el Concierto para piano nº24 en do menor y tendrá como plato fuerte el Requiem. Formado principalmente en Rusia –como su conjunto– el griego Currentzis se ha hecho célebre y prestigioso en todo el mundo por sus audaces planteamientos musicales.

El Festival arrancará el 1 de marzo en el Espacio Turina con un intenso programa de madrigales monteverdianos, que incluye el Combattimento de Tancredi e Clorinda, ofrecido por el conjunto La Fonte Musica, también debutante en la muestra y conocido hasta ahora sobre todo por sus acercamientos a la música medieval. Otros dos conciertos tendrán a importantes figuras internacionales del canto como protagonistas; serán en concreto dos contratenores: Max Emanuel Cencic es ya conocido de Sevilla y vendrá con un programa dedicado a músicas escritas para el castrato Senesino con el acompañamiento de la {Oh!} Orkiestra, el conjunto polaco de singular nombre que dirigirá desde el puesto de concertino Martyna Pastuszka (9 de marzo); menos conocido y nuevo en la ciudad, Valer Sabadus se acercará  a un repertorio no demasiado diferente con el apoyo del Venice Baroque Consort (15 de marzo), el grupo de cámara de la Orquesta Barroca de Venecia que fundó Andrea Marcon, reciente triunfador con Alcina en el Maestranza.

El otro gran nombre internacional del Festival de 2024 es el de Il Giardino Armonico (21 de marzo), que regresa a Sevilla esta vez junto al violonchelista y compositor Giovanni Sollima, que no sólo participa como solista con su cello, sino que ofrece también música propia, pensada para los instrumentos antiguos. Otros dos conjuntos extranjeros debutan en el festival: los noruegos de la Orkester Nord (16 de marzo), nombre algo equívoco, ya que es un grupo preferiblemente vocal, que a Sevilla viene ofreciendo una de sus grabaciones más exitosas, Vida y Pasión de Cristo, un programa construido a partir de seis cantatas del poco conocido maestro alemán del siglo XVII Augustin Pfleger, y el consort de flautas traveseras Phaedrus (23 de marzo), que hará un programa en torno al instrumento en la Inglaterra de Enrique VIII.

El resto del Festival lo ocupan grupos y solistas que de un modo u otro han pasado ya por la muestra, prácticamente todos españoles. Entre ellos,  Musica Ficta (10 de marzo), que hace un programa de polifonía de Victoria y Palestrina, o L’Apothéose (7 de marzo) un aún joven grupo madrileño, de notable prestigio exterior, que viene acompañado por algunos solistas internacionales bien conocidos en la ciudad, como la flautista Dorothee Oberlinger, para un monográfico dedicado a Telemann. El laudista Daniel Zapico (2 de marzo) presentará su disco Au Monde, centrado en el laúd francés, y la soprano Marta Matheu (6 de marzo) vendrá con un grupo creado ad hoc en torno al Festival de los Pirineos para un programa de compositores catalanes. Desde Madrid llegarán también el contrabajista Ismael Campanero acompañado por el clavecinista Daniel Oyarzabal (13 de marzo) e Ímpetus, el conjunto del clavecinista Yago Mahúgo (20 de marzo) para ofrecer las Piezas de clave en concierto de Rameau.

La contribución sevillana incluye el tradicional concierto de la OBS (22 de marzo), esta vez con Enrico Onofri como solista y director, el violín también solista de Lina Tur Bonet y L'Estro Armonico de Vivaldi como objetivo, un recital de A5 Vocal Ensemble (9 de marzo) y otro de Artefactum (23 de marzo), conjuntos populares en la ciudad, igual que los Ministriles Hispalensis que actuarán al aire libre (Casa de la Moneda, 3 de marzo). La compañía Imperdible de José María Roca repetirá su actuación en la muestra de hace un par de años con un mapping, esta vez proyectado sobre la Torre del Oro dos fines de semana consecutivos (8, 9, 15 y 16 de marzo) El ganador de la beca que ofrece el Femás junto a la Asociación de Amigos de la OBS fue este curso el violonchelista Mateo Murillo, que tocará acompañado por dos pesos pesados de la orquesta (Mercedes Ruiz, Alejandro Casal) el 17 de marzo.

Con todo, la gran apuesta local tendrá como sede el Alcázar (14 de marzo) y reunirá al conjunto canadiense Constantinople, el dúo sevillano de música contemporánea Proyecto Ocnos, la voz de la alcalareña Ángeles Núñez y la electrónica de Alberto Carretero, director musical de un espectáculo en torno a la Sevilla medieval de las tres culturas que junto a piezas de las tradiciones sefardí, islámica y cristiana reúne composiciones escritas por el propio Carretero, que vincula así el espectáculo con su nueva ópera, de tema sevillano (La bella Susona), que se ofrece en el Maestranza escoltando este concierto, ya que se estrena el día 13 y se repite el 15.

WIP Update - 24 May 2023

Another  slow-ish writing week  due to being sick. I touched 5 fics (5 WIPs  & 0 new works)  for a total of  1704 words.

On Ao3, I posted:

I  have  15 active WIPs  with my  current  deadlines being  the Stucky and Avengers Bingos events, as well as the May Adoptable & Monthly Mission for the All Caps Bingo.    Attack Plan for those events.

See  below cut for what I’m working on/planning to work on - arranged more or less by bingos/challenges/etc.  As always, feel free to send me   prompts or plot bunnies as well as asks regarding  any of these projects  or any other WIPs I’ve got out there.   Interaction really helps feed the Muse and keep me motivated!

Seek & Destroy Collab

After reading @psychiccatpanda‘s amazing   Morguna and the Green Queen, I  got the itch to explore the Soldier’s POV and talked  Faustie into   collab’ing with me!  We’re working on a new part of the series, and I’ve  contributed about 900 words towards the  2500-ish we have so far.   Going to see if I can squeeze any of my BBB squares into this fic.  

Stucky Bingo Round Four [SB_R4] (Ends 31 May 2023)

Twenty-one fills with three bingos and three WIPs with a couple of other vague ideas. Targeting completion of at least three more squares - stretch goal of a blackout.

* B1 - Mutual Pining -  Looks like the Centerfold fic idea I’ve been toying with for awhile is going back on the shelf - focusing on Chapter 3 of   Making All Things New instead, which is sitting at 1199 words - depending on time/inspiration, I may end the chapter here,  or try to wrap the fic itself up.

* O4 - AU: Supernatural -   Posted Chapter 1 of Beyond the Beast this morning -  the  Stucky fantasy AU (magician!Steve/ensorcelled!Bucky) that @bill-longbow   have been collabing on for awhile. I did a bit of tinkering with it to squish it into my BB_C4  Myth square and can also use it for for my BBB  AU: Medieval/Fantasy square Gonna count it toward this bingo’s Myths and Legends monthly prompt, too!  😁 It came in at 1642 words, about half of which were mine.   We’re still trying to figure out where to take this next.  

*Adoptable1 - Remix one of your own fics – Finally cracked this thanks to another 3 Prompts –> Summary game: Wings, Transformation, Confession.  I’m planning a Bucky POV of at least the first part of Take What Was Wrong (And Make it Right) the obvious title - Half of the Flesh and Blood That Makes Me Whole. 😁  Chapter one has been drafted - sitting at 1237 words and will post  on Friday.   Expecting at least one more chapter, possibly two, depending on how far I want to take the remix. 

Avengers Bingo Round Four [AvB_R4] (Ends 2 June)

This  time around the card is a 3x3,  so am looking at writing different   pairings for my two favorite Avengers - Tony and Steve.    I have eight fills completed and one WIP.  

* B2 - Crossover AU –  picking up my Star Wars fusion Stucky/Stuckony fic:  Never More to Go Astray.   Chapter 8 is sitting at 1106 words and will post on the 2nd - with (hopefully only) one more chapter to wrap the fic up. 

* B3 - Mistaken Identity -  Posted Chapter 3 of   Decision at Sundown  on Monday - it came in at 888 words and probably needs one more chapter to wrap up the fic. 

* C1 - Babysitter AU -  Posted Chapter one of Peresmešnik,  (aka Three Avengers and a Baby)  last Friday.  This collab with MagicaDraconia16. crosses over with my  ACB Babysitter square and involve s Steve, Bucky & Tony kidfic shenanigans.  It came in at 2248 words (my part - roughly 1400 words)  with another 500-ish already in chapter 2 (300-ish are mine).

Bucky Barnes Connect Four Alt-Juniverse Event (BB_C4)[ends 30 Jun 2023]

Signed up for this event over at @buckybarnesevents - you get a four-square card featuring ideas for AUs.  The prompts can be used as stand-alones or combined with each other or other events.   Thanks to crossovers, I finished out the card!   Once I do the paperwork, I’m hoping to grab another card before the event wraps up.

* May Monthly Mission  - Sir, Yes, Sir is a perfect match for Chapter 2 of   Surrender (But Don’t Give Yourself Away) - my WinterIron –>Stuckony  Steve POV WIP based on the following 3 Prompts –> Summary game prompt :  Praise Kink, One Night Stand, Identity Porn. This probably final chapter is coming in at 2108 words with the plan to post it on the 29th - it crosses over with my WIB  Edging and BBB KINK: “Please let me come” squares.

I have six fills completed and two WIPs for this brand-new bingo event that I’m helping mod!  Along with crossfilling against my other bingos,  I’m going to try to combine my B column squares for the Iron Soldier badge (complete a bingo with a single work). – Alpha Tony Stark, “That was not my intention.”, James Rhodes,Alpine loves Tony and Blind date.

* N1 - Bucharest –  I think I can fold this into a future chapter of My Love is Vengeance -  where a young!Tony and a recovering!Bucky have been kidnapped by Hydra, who still thinks Bucky is the Soldier.

Bei Vigan City handelt es sich um die älteste spanische Kolonialstadt des Landes, welche 1999 zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde. Neuerdings zählt sie auch noch zu den „New7Wonders Cities„. Vigan ist die sehr gut erhaltene Hauptstadt der Provinz Ilocos Sur auf Luzon und eine der wenigen Städte des Landes, die überhaupt als solche bezeichnet werden können. Hier wurde nicht einfach wild drauf los gebaut sondern nach Plan und mit Struktur.

Vigan City erfüllt mit ihrer einzigartigen Architektur gleich zwei Kriterien, die die Stadt 1999 auf die Liste der UNESCO Weltkulturerben beförderte: Asiatische Baukunst wird hier mit der europäischen Kolonialarchitektur vermischt. Außerdem ist Vigan City neben Manila eine der am besten erhaltenen europäischen Handelsstädte in Ost- und Südostasien.

Die vermeintliche Gründung durch die Spanier geht auf das Jahr 1572 zurück, wobei der Ursprung der Stadt bereits durch einen chinesischen Handelsposten vorher gelegt wurde, die hier Gold, Bienenwachs und Holz einkauften.

Einmalig ist wohl auch der Mix der Stile in der Stadt, welcher nicht nur spanisch und chinesisch ist. Als Kolonialmacht Spaniens gerieten auch Einflüsse aus Mexico, der Karibik und Nordafrikas hierher und prägten einen Baustil der "Fusion". Von spanischem Baustil zeugen die luftigen Verändern, grüne Innenhöfe und schmiedeeiserne Balkone. Asien steuerte dunkle Holzelemente, glänzende Böden, Schiebefenster aus Capiz-Muscheln und belüftete Wände bei.

Sehenswürdigkeiten in Vigan City sind:

ca. 233 historische Stadthäuser

bekannten Pferdekutschen („Kalesas“)

historisches Kopfsteinpflaster der Crisologo Street (Calle Crisologo)

die Plaza Burgos, wo sich auch die berühmte Kathedrale befindet

die Plaza Salcedo, wo sich die Stadthalle und das Provinz-Kapitol befinden; zudem bekommt man hier auch leckere Empanadas

die Erzbischöfliche Residenz

Bantay Glockenturm einen guten Kilometer nördlich des Stadtkerns

Dies alles ist nur erhalten geblieben, da die Amerikaner sich zum Ende des WW II in letzter Sekunde gegen ein Flächenbombardement entschieden.

Mein zweiter Punkt für heute lag in der Nähe von der Stadt Laoag, wo sich im der Gemeinde Paoay die Kirche San Agustín (1704-1794) befindet. Sie zählt zu den bedeutendsten historischen Kirchenbauten des Landes und gehört seit dem Jahr 1993 als Bestandteil der Barock-Kirchen auf den Philippinen ebenfalls zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe.

Geschichte:

Mönche des Augustinerordens gründeten im Jahr 1593 im Ort Paoay eine Kirchengemeinde und errichteten einen ersten Kirchenbau aus Holz und Schilf bzw. Gras. Später entstand die heutige, aus Backsteinen gemauerte Kirche mit seinen 24 mächtige und nach unten immer breiter ausladende seitliche Strebepfeiler. Hier trifft man auf ein Stilmix aus barock, gotisch, chinesisch, japanisch und sogar javanesisch. Der etwa 100 Jahre jüngere Glockenturm steht seitlich vor der Kirche; durch den Abstand kann ein eventueller Einsturz die Kirche nicht beschädigen. Er besteht größtenteils aus einem Mauerwerk aus Korallensteinen.

Anschließend ging es mit dem Auto wieder die knapp 70km zurück nach Vigan und zum Abendessen.
