#Universalis (Calendar Philippines)
Sunday 17 December 2023
3rd Sunday of Advent
The Lord is at hand: come, let us adore him.
Year: B(II). Psalm week: 3.
Liturgical Colour: Rose or Violet.
[O Sapientia!]
O Sapiéntia,
quæ ex ore Altíssimi prodísti,
attíngens a fine usque ad finem,
fórtiter suavitérque dispónens ómnia:
veni ad docéndum nos viam prudéntiæ.
“O Wisdom, you come forth from the mouth of the Most High.
You fill the universe and hold all things together in a strong yet gentle manner.
O come to teach us the way of truth.”
As the great feast of Christmas approaches, its light begins to blot out the lights of the individual days, as planets are blotted out when they appear too close to the Sun.
The great “O Antiphons” at Vespers are worth celebrating even if Vespers itself is not part of your daily pattern.
They count down the last seven days before Christmas and tie together seven threads of hope, longing and doctrine which all find their culmination and final union in the moment of the Incarnation.
<Jesus is the Word and Wisdom of God.>
As Isaiah says,
“On him the spirit of the Lord rests,
a spirit of wisdom and insight,
a spirit of counsel and power.”
[Second Reading:]
Pope St Leo the Great (- 461)
Leo was born in Etruria and became Pope in 440.
He was a true shepherd and father of souls.
He constantly strove to keep the faith whole and strenuously defended the unity of the Church.
He repelled the invasions of the barbarians or alleviated their effects, famously persuading Attila the Hun not to march on Rome in 452, and preventing the invading Vandals from massacring the population in 455.
Leo left many doctrinal and spiritual writings behind and a number of them are included in the Office of Readings to this day.
He died in 461.
[Readings at Mass]
Liturgical Colour: Rose or Violet.
Year: B(II).
[First reading]
#Isaiah61:1-2,10-11 ©
He has sent me to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord
The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for the Lord has anointed me.
He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up hearts that are broken; to proclaim liberty to captives,
freedom to those in prison; to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord.
‘I exult for joy in the Lord,
my soul rejoices in my God,
for he has clothed me in the garments of salvation,
he has wrapped me in the cloak of integrity,
like a bridegroom wearing his wreath,
like a bride adorned in her jewels.
‘For as the earth makes fresh things grow,
as a garden makes seeds spring up,
so will the Lord make both integrity and praise
spring up in the sight of the nations.’
[Responsorial Psalm]
#Luke1:46-50,53-54 ©
(My soul rejoices in my God.)
My soul glorifies the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God,
my Saviour.
He looks on his servant in her nothingness;
henceforth all ages will call me blessed.
My soul rejoices in my God.
The Almighty works marvels for me.
Holy his name!
His mercy is from age to age,
on those who fear him.
My soul rejoices in my God.
He fills the starving with good things,
sends the rich away empty.
He protects Israel, his servant,
remembering his mercy.
My soul rejoices in my God.
[Second reading]
#1Thessalonians5:16-24 ©
(May you all be kept safe for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ)
Be happy at all times;
pray constantly; and for all things give thanks to God, because this is what God expects you to do in Christ Jesus.
Never try to suppress the Spirit or treat the gift of prophecy with contempt;
think before you do anything –
hold on to what is good and avoid every form of evil.
May the God of peace make you perfect and holy;
and may you all be kept safe and blameless, spirit, soul and body,
for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
God has called you and he will not fail you.
[Gospel Acclamation]
#Is61:(Lk4:18)
Alleluia, alleluia!
The spirit of the Lord has been given to me.
He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor.
Alleluia!
[Gospel]
#John1:6-8,19-28 ©
('There stands among you the one coming after me')
A man came, sent by God.
His name was John.
He came as a witness,
as a witness to speak for the light,
so that everyone might believe through him.
He was not the light,
only a witness to speak for the light.
This is how John appeared as a witness.
When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,
‘Who are you?’ he not only declared, but he declared quite openly,
‘I am not the Christ.’
‘Well then,’ they asked ‘are you Elijah?’
‘I am not’
he said.
‘Are you the Prophet?’
He answered, ‘No.’
So they said to him,
‘Who are you?
We must take back an answer to those who sent us.
What have you to say about yourself?’
So John said,
‘I am,
as Isaiah prophesied:
a voice that cries in the wilderness:
Make a straight way for the Lord.’
Now these men had been sent by the Pharisees, and they put this further question to him,
‘Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ,
and not Elijah, and not the prophet?’
John replied, ‘I baptise with water;
but there stands among you – unknown to you – the one who is coming after me;
and I am not fit to undo his sandal-strap.’
This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.

September 23--Spiritual Vitamins--Day 23
SPIRITUAL VITAMIN R : REJOICE “Rejoice in the Lord, always. Again, I will say, rejoice !”  Philippians 4:4 NKJV
Today’s Thought: Rejoicing is easy when things are going good, when we’re happy and well, when we’re living on the mountaintops of life. But when things aren’t going so well, then it is sometimes hard to rejoice. But the verse does say “Always” and “Again” How can we rejoice always? I believe Paul shows us how when he says ” I will” I will is making a choice to rejoice no matter what the circumstances are.
Today’s Action: Today let’s make a choice to rejoice! Always! Again and Again! No matter what our circumstances are let’s say “I will rejoice!” Let’s choose to be glad and take delight in the Lord everyday.
REJOICE means:to be glad; take delight In him our hearts rejoice,(are glad, take delight) for we are trusting in his holy name. Psalm 33:21
REJOICE means: to make joyful; gladden But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; (be joyful, glad) let them sing joyful praises forever. Psalm 5:11
Rejoice always, 1 Thessalonians 5:16 NKJV

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11. . . No Christmas present (apart from Jesus Himself) could be greater than the gift of seeing these beautiful, treasured siblings in Christ this afternoon. 🌻 Michelle and Izumi, I cannot express how touched, encouraged, and BLESSED I was by your visit...to be able to hug you, laugh (and cry) with you, and simply fellowship with you (and my bro heh) today was such a precious gift, and a beautiful reminder of how much God has blessed me with the people He has placed in my life. This season has been unpredictable and challenging for all of us in so many ways, but if anything it has only worked to strengthen and deepen friendships (like yours) that truly matter in life. You two have blessed and encouraged me in more ways than I can express, and I cannot thank God and you enough for that. . . No matter where God is leading and taking each of us next, it gives me such joy to call you brother and sister, and to walk alongside you (in spirit) on this faith journey. Though our paths may not always cross or align in a physical sense, in spirit we are running the same race and serving the same God, and that is one of the greatest blessings I could ask for. I hope you know that you both (especially my bae Michelle heheheh 😘) will always hold a special place in my heart, and that I will continue to walk with you in prayer and in faith as long as God allows. ❣️ No matter what He has in store, know that you are never ever alone, and that you are seen and treasured by God (and by me hehe) more than you can imagine. :) I love you both dearly, and will continue to keep you near to my heart wherever God leads. God bless you abundantly, now and forever! And Merry Merry Christmas :’)) . . #truefriendship #fellowship #christmascameearly #bestchristmasgift #ever #friendsforlife #familyinChrist #mizumi #loveyoutwo #inspired #blessed #overjoyed #1thessalonians5 #v11 #runningtherace #Hiskingdomcome #Hiswillbedone #merrychristmas (at Vancouver B.C)
