Zen garden design

Zen Buddhist priest Shunmyo Masuno understands that today's busy world leaves little time or space for self-reflection, but that a garden--even in the most urban of spaces--can provide some respite. In his words, "The garden is a special spiritual place where the mind dwells." With this in mind, Masuno has designed scores of spectacular Japanese gardens and landscapes with the aim of helping people achieve a balanced life in the 21st century.

Math Scores Fell in Nearly Every State, and Reading Dipped on National Exam (NYT) U.S. students in most states and across almost all demographic groups have experienced troubling setbacks in both math and reading, according to an authoritative national exam released on Monday, offering the most definitive indictment yet of the pandemic’s impact on millions of schoolchildren. In math, the results were especially devastating, representing the steepest declines ever recorded on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the nation’s report card, which tests a broad sampling of fourth and eighth graders and dates to the early 1990s. In the test’s first results since the pandemic began, math scores for eighth graders fell in nearly every state. A meager 26 percent of eighth graders were proficient, down from 34 percent in 2019. Fourth graders fared only slightly better, with declines in 41 states. Just 36 percent of fourth graders were proficient in math, down from 41 percent. Reading scores also declined in more than half the states, continuing a downward trend that had begun even before the pandemic. No state showed sizable improvement in reading. And only about one in three students met proficiency standards, a designation that means students have demonstrated competency and are on track for future success.
The Wealth Of America’s Bottom 50 Percent Has Doubled During The Pandemic Years (The Intercept) Last month, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., tweeted about a new report that he’d requested from the Congressional Budget Office. The report included a chart illustrating the shockingly low amount of wealth held by the poorer half of American households compared to everyone else. Indeed, the bottom 50 percent’s wealth was so low that it is barely visible on the chart. Moreover, it had stayed modest since 1989—even as the net worth of the top 10 percent of Americans had zoomed upwards, more than tripling. But the CBO’s report only provided these figures through 2019. Since 2020, the net worth of the poorer 50 percent has doubled and is now far higher than it’s ever been in U.S. history. So these are good times for many, many Americans in the poorer 50 percent. That doesn’t mean that millions aren’t struggling, but the financial prospects for most were even worse in the past.
US and Chinese diplomacy (and spending) (Politico) Theodore Roosevelt once said, “speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.” While the U.S. might still have the world’s largest economy and military, the country might be speaking a little too softly these days. Compared to China, the U.S. is falling behind in its diplomatic efforts, with the CCP spending more on diplomacy yearly as the U.S. diplomacy budget remains flat. A Chinese-built convention center now overlooks the Panama Canal, a key worldwide waterway, and a new bridge is set to be built by a Chinese consortium, relieving traffic congestion on other bridges between the country’s east and west sides. U.S. diplomats wanted U.S. companies to bid on the bridge’s construction to strengthen ties with the country, but despite the best efforts from the then-U.S. ambassador to Panama, no businesses committed. He recalled, “I rang every bell in Washington that I could to try to drum up U.S. private sector interest. I asked for a commercial delegation to come down, and I got nothing.” Similar events have played out across the world in recent years. “Once upon a time, it was a given that the American embassy in a given country, in most countries, was the biggest embassy, the most visible embassy, the most influential embassy,” said Eric Rubin, former U.S. ambassador to Bulgaria. “That is not the case now in many parts of the world. In much of the developing world, it’s China.”
Brazil pol and Bolsonaro ally refuses arrest, injures police (AP) A Brazilian politician attacked federal police officers seeking to arrest him in his home on Sunday, prompting an hours-long siege that caused alarm and a scramble for a response at the highest level of government. Roberto Jefferson, a former lawmaker and an ally of President Jair Bolsonaro, fired a rifle at police and threw grenades, wounding two officers in the rural municipality Comendador Levy Gasparian, in Rio de Janeiro state. He said in a video message sent to supporters on WhatsApp that he refused to surrender, though by early evening he was in custody. The events were stunning even for Brazilians who have grown increasingly accustomed to far-right politicians and activists thumbing their noses at Supreme Court justices, and comes just days before Brazilians go to the polls to vote for president.
Rishi Sunak, UK’s next PM, faces major economic problems (AP) Former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak is set to become Britain’s first prime minister of color after being chosen Monday to lead a governing Conservative Party desperate for a safe pair of hands to guide the country through economic and political turbulence. The challenges facing the U.K.’s third prime minister this year are enormous: He must try to shore up an economy sliding toward recession and reeling after his predecessor’s brief, disastrous experiment in libertarian economics, while also attempting to unite a demoralized and divided party that trails far behind the opposition in opinion polls. In his first public statement, Sunak said “the United Kingdom is a great country, but there is no doubt we face a profound economic challenge.”
Ukraine’s counter-drone strategy (NYT) The war in Ukraine is now fought in two mostly separate arenas: on the ground in the south and east, where the Ukrainian Army has the upper hand, and in the air, where Russia is firing long-range missiles and deploying the exploding Iranian-made drones to cripple the electrical and heating infrastructure in Ukrainian cities in the hopes of demoralizing the population. Since Russia began terrorizing Ukrainian cities in September with the drones, Ukraine has turned its focus to an intense counter-drone strategy, made up on the fly but often surprisingly successful. Currently, it consists of three layers of protection: fighter jets that patrol around the clock; ground-fired antiaircraft missiles; and teams of soldiers with machine guns who try to shoot the drones down as they fly past. The hardest part is simply finding the drones. On radar, the small, plodding drones can be confused with migrating birds or trucks on a highway. Ground controllers identify potential targets and direct jets to intercept them, but often the pilots come up empty. Despite the hurdles, the Ukrainian military is now routinely shooting down more than 70 percent of the Shahed-136 drones Russia purchased from Iran in August, Yuriy Sak, an adviser to the Ukrainian minister of defense, said in an interview.
Russia’s ‘dirty bomb’ claims against Ukraine (Washington Post) Monday marks eight months since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, and the war grinds on. The United States, Britain and France rejected as “transparently false” claims by Moscow’s defense minister that Ukraine is preparing to use a “dirty bomb”—explosive weapons designed to widely disperse radioactive material—on its own territory with Western help, characterizing the claims as an attempt by Moscow to create a pretext for escalating the conflict. Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in 1994 in return for a guarantee from Russia that it would not attack Ukraine.
Xi Jinping’s third term (1440) Chinese President Xi Jinping secured a third term as the Communist Party’s general secretary, the party’s top job, as the weeklong 20th Party Congress came to a close yesterday. Xi is expected to receive a third term as president in March as well. The widely expected extension of Xi’s tenure breaks from a trend in recent decades where party leaders have stepped down from the role after two terms. In 2018, the country’s legislature—made up mostly of Communist Party members—removed presidential term limits shortly after adding Xi’s political doctrines to its constitution. With at least five more years of leadership, Xi will become the longest-serving leader in modern Chinese history since Mao Zedong. The formal proceedings were interrupted by the unexplained removal of Xi’s predecessor Hu Jintao, provoking international speculation.
2 Koreas exchange warning shots along disputed sea boundary (AP) North and South Korea exchanged warning shots Monday along their disputed western sea boundary—a scene of past bloodshed and naval battles—in a development that raises worry of possible clashes after North Korea’s recent barrage of weapons tests. South Korea’s navy broadcast warnings and fired warning shots to repel a North Korean merchant ship that violated the sea boundary at 3:42 a.m., the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. North Korea’s military said its coastal defense units responded by firing 10 rounds of artillery warning shots toward its territorial waters, where “naval enemy movement was detected.” It accused a South Korean naval ship of intruding into North Korean waters on the pretext of cracking down on an unidentified ship. There were no reports of fighting, but the sea boundary off the Korean Peninsula’s west coast is a source of long-running animosities.
Korean Air plane overshoots runway, shuts Philippine airport (AP) A damaged Korean Air plane remained stuck in the grass at a central Philippine airport Monday after it overshot a runway in rainy weather the night before. No injuries were reported among the 162 passengers and 11 crewmembers who escaped from the aircraft using emergency slides. Dozens of flights have been canceled and Mactan-Cebu International Airport, one of the country’s busiest, remained closed due to the stalled aircraft at the end of its lone usable runway. The terrifying close call prompted a public apology from Korean Air’s president and a vow from one of Asia’s most prominent airlines to take steps to prevent a recurrence.
Lebanon fails to elect president for fourth time as Aoun’s departure looms (Reuters) Lebanon’s parliament failed on Monday to elect a president for the fourth time, with just a week left until outgoing President Michel Aoun’s term ends and warnings of a constitutional crisis growing louder. With parliament more fractured than ever after May’s elections, political blocs have been unable to reach consensus on a candidate to succeed Aoun. The presidency has fallen vacant several times since the 1975-1990 civil war but a vacuum now would be especially worrisome. The government is already operating in a caretaker capacity and the country is sinking deeper into a three-year-old financial meltdown.
Judges, ministers, now army chief: Settlers rise in Israel (AP) Israel’s military has long had a cozy relationship with Jewish settlers in the West Bank. Those ties are about to deepen. For the first time, a settler will serve as chief of staff of Israel’s military, becoming the enforcer of Israel’s open-ended occupation of the West Bank, now in its 56th year. Maj. Gen. Herzi Halevi’s nomination was approved on Sunday and he is expected to begin his three-year term on Jan. 17. Halevi’s rise caps the decades-long transformation of the settler movement from a small group of religious ideologues to a diverse and influential force at the heart of the Israeli mainstream whose members have reached the highest ranks of government and other key institutions. Critics say the settlers’ outsized political influence imperils any hope for the creation of an independent Palestinian state and endangers the country’s future as a democracy. They say Halevi’s appointment lays bare just how interconnected settlers and the military truly are. Others say Halevi, currently deputy chief of staff, has had a distinguished military career and his place of residence won’t affect his decision-making.
Ethiopian forces advance (Foreign Policy) Ethiopian and Eritrean troops have seized Adwa, a town in Tigray, the Associated Press reported, further escalating a nearly two-year-long war that is estimated to have killed half a million people. Last week, they also captured the strategic Tigrayan city of Shire. As the conflict deepens, Washington announced on Friday that it would offer Ethiopians living in the United States Temporary Protected Status for an 18-month period. “The United States recognizes the ongoing armed conflict and the extraordinary and temporary conditions engulfing Ethiopia, and DHS is committed to providing temporary protection to those in need,” said U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

sports run deep in your family. your grandfather, your father, your older brother : the triple threat of sports, each cutting their way through their own league ( the mlb, the nhl, and the nfl — RESPECTIVELY ). you were never as gifted as any of them athletically — good enough, smart enough, but nothing more than a decent athlete that could hold your own. no, instead you picked up a camera and this is how you fit in.
AESTHETICS: she is like the summer nights when the stars are far away and the fire is dying out, the sun’s warmth a comforting memory and all the potential of tomorrow ready to be spread out before you ( worn out timberland boots, pink lipstick, short and flowy dresses, fireflies in a jar, a denim jacket covered in patches, the heat of a sparkler against your fingers, do no harm but take no shit, coy smiles because you want something, the smell of balsam and pine needles )
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘
— she was adopted when she was just under two years old from turkey when her parents decided they wanted a little girl, so the clearwaters have always felt like her family to her. she knew the greater part of growing up that she was adopted, it just never was an issue for her. recently, though, she has felt like she should reconnect with her native middle eastern heritage.
—  the clearwaters are a triple threat in sports : her grandfather retired mlb player and coach, her father a retired prominent defenseman in the nhl and current dartmouth men’s hockey coach, and her older brother michael ( 26 and always mikey to her ) is making a splash in his third year in the nfl as a wide receiver.  however, her parents made sure she and her brother had a ( fairly ) average “middle class” bringing up, though they had their fair share of money in the bank. didn’t have to struggle, really, but didn’t get everything she wanted either. had a summer job scooping ice cream for two years in high school.
— grew up in norwich, vt, real big on nature and hiking and all that jazz. she’s always down for an adventure and to go hiking.
— when she was ten she got one of those kid’s polaroid cameras ( u know the ones where the film is only a little bigger than a postage stamp ) and she was obsessed. she worked her way up through cameras over the years, having a natural eye for it.
— one of the first games she ever shot was one of her brother’s high school football games which sounds sweet but it was actually because she was so bored out of her mind and wanted something to do. needless to say, though, that was the start of it. some might say it was kind of inevitable she gravitated toward sports somehow — she was a clearwater at heart. since then she has gained a lot of knowledge and respect for all different kinds of sports.
— for college she was torn between dartmouth, nyu, and halston. she ultimately chose halston because it was somewhere new, though the elite photography program at nyu was hard to pass up.
— her freshman year ayla was at as many games she could physically get it every weekend, shooting and shooting and shooting, until eventually the office took notice of her. her sophomore year she split time between the men’s hockey and football teams ( and a few other games of other sports where she could grab them ). a couple of her photos have been used for the banners outside the football field and hockey arenas, one across the header of the football team’s website, and several in the yearbook, including a two page spread shot of roo carlson that she’s very proud of.
— PROFESSIONALLY, she has managed to shoot a few kings, dodgers, and lakers games as well. she’s held an internship with the la galaxy from the spring of her freshman year to early fall of her sophomore year. she then accepted an internship with bernstein associates, official photographers of the la kings, clippers, dodgers, and lakers, this past summer.
— she does a little freelance work as well ; mostly for friends or friends of friends, though she’s been considering lately trying to make her skills and business available in a more professional manner to begin building an image for when she graduates. she does do a lot of photographing for herself — a lot of candids ; she thinks they capture the true spirit of a person moreso than when they’re posing or prepared for a photo.
𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐂
— just got a new camera + lens ( nikon D500 + fancy zoom lens ) last summer as an early birthday present to herself. she practically become one with it over the course of the summer and she’s rarely separate from it. that thing cost her so much money and is her baby okay.
— she hopes someday to be the team photographer for a professional team, hopefully in one of the “big four” ( mlb, nfl, nba, or nhl ), and she thinks her prospects are looking very good.
— she played field hockey and lacrosse through high school.
— ayla thinks she’s better at shooting people. part of what she loves about being a sports photographer is how active and unpredictable it is to shoot a game. she’s had to learn a lot to try to predict what she can. they say you make your own luck and for a sports photographer that is true. part of it is down to chance, but there are things you can learn about the game in order to increase your chances of being in the right place at the right time.
— very much a morning person. has never had a problem waking up in the morning. typically goes for a run at sunrise, and has showered, gotten ready for the day, and is at a local cafe shop editing photos / making graphics and drinking an iced mocha by 8. truly couldn’t be me…
— you can often find her watching practices, not just to practice shooting but to learn more about what makes each team and player tick in order to improve her ability to predict their tendencies ( which in turn makes her chances of getting a good photo go up ). she takes her craft very seriously.
— she has a policy of not sleeping with or dating players on the teams that she shoots — it’s called professionalism, boys !! she likes to be respected and somehow doesn’t think that sleeping with the players goes very far for her in that regard. that doesn’t mean the players don’t try, though...
— she has struggled a bit with people who think her opportunities have only arisen because of her family pedigree ( which some have gone so far to tell her they’re “not her family” — which, don’t even go there, lads... ), and that has made ayla work all that much harder to prove that she’d gotten where she has on her own merits.
— so desperately wants to be that girl with tons of cute aesthetic plants in her room but tragically plants always die in her care no matter what she does. probably has gotten one of those tiny tabletop sand zen gardens to make herself feel better tho she still keeps trying with plants. so far the only ones that have lived any length of time are the air plants. there is no hope.
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘
— she’s generally well liked, with a hint of sass and humor. she comes across as a bit of an air-head at times, but that’s part due to a persona she put on from a young age. she has an observant eye that drew to her photography in the first place and will often allow her to draw certain conclusions about people.
— ayla has a very down to earth outlook and approach to life, often taking things as they come. she’s adaptable to situations, but manages to usually stay to the original path she saw for herself.
—  she’s well versed in all the sports she shoots, something that tends to surprise a lot of people, but how is she supposed to be good at her job if she isn’t ? if she gets bothered during games she typically shuts people down with wide eyes and some obscure bit of knowledge in her cute, raspy lil voice. dareisay… elle woods, what like it’s hard ? energy ?? she’s a hard worker, and strives for everything she posts or hands in to be perfect.
— a few of her downfalls include her narcissism and need to be liked. she looks to look and feel pretty, by her own standards, and is a queen of the self-timer and remote self photography : has two instas because of it – one for her sports photography and one that’s a “personal” and mostly just pictures of herself.
— her need to be liked is something she doesn’t even realize. she likes to be seen in a positive light and it can on occasion lead to her agreeing to do things she doesn’t really want to. at the same time this is constantly in conflict with her desire to be independent and be her own person.
— she also just believes that everyone just does like her because she is a likeable and very down to earth person — both of which are true for the most part, but reveals the blurring line she has between confidence and arrogance. she can be quite judgmental at times, especially towards those who are overly dramatic, but they’re confined more to just thoughts than any actual voiced words or actions. in a way, this feeds into a sense of her own self-arrogance.
𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄
—  alya stands at 53″ with a slim but athletic build. she has a runner’s body, deceptively strong, lithe, and built for distance.
— warm brown eyes that look like they’re laughing more often than not.
— her hair is naturally brown, but is dyed to have blonde highlights near the bottom. often styled half up & half down, kept down and loose, or in a messy bun.
— she does not need glasses or contacts and has no tattoos.
— piercings & jewelry: both lobes and cartilage. often wears simple black studs in all of them ; has an affinity for simple silver rings, often wearing two on each hand ; a black timex watch she bought for $20 at target that’s waterproof
— style : she’s almost always wearing the same pair of beat up timberland’s she’s owned since like sophomore year of high school. she likes to be able to move easily ( bc homegirl absolutely cannot walk in heels at all ). despite this, she also likes to look cute at the same time, often pairing them with short, flowy sundresses or skirts + crop tops. when she shoots games, however, she’s dressed rather practically in skinny jeans, a crop top, and a cardigan ( if necessary ).
— PINTEREST BOARD HERE
𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒
— pretty girl like you ( any ) : someone who does not understand why ayla is “wasting” her talents on sports and thinks she should try moving into the fashion or modeling business. i don’t think this is necessarily a negative connection — it could be well intentioned, or maybe it is truly just meant to be scathing.
— you & me were never meant to be ( any, female wld be real lit tho 👀 ) : an ex from her earlier years at halston. i imagine they broke up either before the summer of her sophomore year or early in her sophomore year. there’s not much ayla loves more than her photography, and i think maybe they didn’t understand. could have been mutual, could have ended poorly, could have just.... fizzled out. pretty open !! i’d just like her to have an ex.
— you just don’t get the message ( male ) : someone who is just relentlessly pursuing her ( not in an overly creepy way, y’know tho ). someone she’s told no multiple times and yet he still keeps trying rip. — TAKEN BY OWEN

☆ . · . simay barlas, twenty-two, female, she / her . · . ☆ AYLA CLEARWATER lives in that huge mansion over there! no, not that one. look for THE LARGE NATURAL STONE FOUNTAIN and that’ll be it. the SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHER has offered occasional glimpses of LIGHT GREEN walls and an impressive collection of EMPTY PICTURE FRAMES in the background of social media posts, but all of that is nothing compared to seeing the opulence in person. they’ve remained CLEVER as ever since moving to tercet court one year ago, but it seems like they might’ve gotten a little more of NARCISSISTIC too. maybe that’s why they’re rumored to have such a FRIENDLY relationship with everyone else who lives on this street. ☆ . · . ooc info: ollie, they/them, 21, est . · . ☆
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘
— she was adopted when she was just under two years old from turkey, so the clearwaters have always felt like her family to her. she knew the greater part of growing up that she was adopted, it just never was an issue for her. it was a fact, but it really wasn’t an important fact. she has no desire to try to find her birth parents or family, though she has visited turkey.
—  the clearwaters are a triple threat in sports : her grandfather retired mlb player and coach, her father a retired prominent defenseman in the nhl and current dartmouth men’s hockey coach, and her older brother ( 26 ) is making a splash in his third year in the nfl as a wide receiver.  however, her parents made sure she and her brother had a ( fairly ) average “middle class” bringing up, though they had their fair share of money in the bank. didn’t have to struggle, really, but didn’t get everything she wanted either. had a summer job scooping ice cream for two years in high school.
— grew up in norwich, vt, real big on nature and hiking and all that jazz and lowkey misses it in the heart of la.
— for college she was torn between dartmouth and nyu. she ultimately chose nyu because it was somewhere new.
— she went to nyu for advertising and photography, shooting various nyu sports teams while she was there and throughout her years, managed to shoot a few rangers, knicks, and yankees games as well. she held two summer internships with the yankees ( on her own merits or because of her family name, she may never truly know ) and ultimately graduated from nyu a year early.
— she then spent the better part of a year after graduation road tripping as you do and ended up in california. it’s all about who you know, and in picking up a favor for a friend in cali she stumbled into the perfect opportunity. from there she landed a role on the company that handles the photography for staples center and other notable teams, most notably the kings, lakers, and dodgers ( photography company based on this irl one ).
— she moved into tercet court not long after she knew she would be in la for much of the time being. it’s definitely not her house, considering she makes just enough to live on. it’s a family home, purchased initially by her father who’d wanted to sink some money into tangible assets instead of the stock market and to have a west-coast home available for the family. hey, worked out pretty well for her.
— she has predominately been tasked with shooting the kings the past year or so, though she started with shooting dodgers games last summer and is doing so this summer as well. she’s also shot a handful of lakers’ games when a friend needs someone to cover. three of her photos so far have been used in large ads and banners in the city ( including most recently her current MONEY SHOT of the game winning goal in a come back win ) --- very cool moment for her. several others have been used by local publications and websites.
— she does a little freelance work as well ; mostly for friends or friends of friends, though she’s been considering lately trying to make her skills and business available in a more professional manner. she does do a lot of photographing for herself --- a lot of candids ; she thinks they capture the true spirit of a person moreso than when they’re posing or prepared for a photo. but not in a creepy way --- she’s been the victim of the paps enough times by association with her family to know the correct boundaries and limits.
𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐂
— lowkey loves playing games with the paps, though she’s probably the only one that finds it funny. as a photographer herself she has a good eye for where they’re hiding and will also snap photos of them in turn just for her own amusement.
— she hopes someday to be the team photographer for a team, hopefully in one of the “big four” ( nfl, nhl, nba, mlb )
— she played field hockey and lacrosse through high school.
— ayla thinks she’s better at shooting people. part of what she loves about being a sports photographer is how active and unpredictable it is to shoot a game. she’s had to learn a lot to try to predict what she can.
— very much a morning person. has never had a problem waking up in the morning. who’s jealous bc i am. goes for a run at sunrise, and has showered, gotten ready for the day, and is at a local cafe shop editing photos / making graphics and drinking an iced mocha by 8. truly couldn’t be me...
— so desperately wants to be that girl with tons of cute aesthetic plants in her apartment but tragically plants always die in her care no matter what she does. probably has gotten one of those tiny tabletop sand zen gardens to make herself feel better tho she still keeps trying with plants. so far the only ones that have lived any length of time are the air plants.
— she really wants a greyhound but is afraid to make the commitment to actually adopting one.
— her personal insta ( the non-sports one ) has a modest following. a few thousand, probs.
— she has struggled a bit with people who think her opportunities have only arisen because of her family pedigree ( which some have gone so far to tell her they’re “not her family” --- which, don’t even go there, lads... ), and that has made ayla work all that much harder to prove that she’d gotten where she has on her own merits.
— she has a rule ( and in the case of the nhl there is a rule enforced by a signed contract ) about not getting involved with anyone she shoots ; it’s considered a conflict of interest. i imagine she has a really good relationship with the players though --- probably doesn’t hurt that she is pretty. at least one of them have hired her to shoot their wedding this summer even though she is wildly under qualified.
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘
alya is a chill and laidback person at heart. her approach to the fame attached to her due to her father and brother has been to laugh it off good-naturedly. she’s generally well liked, with a hint of sass and humor. she comes across as a bit of an air-head at times, but that’s part due to a persona she put on from a young age. she has an observant eye that drew to her photography in the first place and will often allow her to draw certain conclusions about people. she’s well versed in all the sports she shoots, something that tends to surprise a lot of people, but how is she supposed to be good at her job if she isn’t ? if she gets bothered during games she typically shuts people down with wide eyes and some obscure bit of knowledge in her cute, raspy lil voice. dareisay... elle woods, what like it’s hard ? energy ??
a few of her downfalls include her narcissism and need to be liked. she looks to look and feel pretty, by her own standards, and is a queen of the self-timer and remote self photography : has two instas because of it -- one for her sports photography and one that’s a “personal” and mostly just pictures of herself. her need to be liked is something she doesn’t even realize. she likes to be seen in a positive light.
𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄
alya stands at 5′4″ with a slim but athletic build. her hair is naturally brown, but is dyed to have blonde highlights. she does not need glasses or contacts and has no tattoos.
she’s almost always wearing the same pair of beat up timberland’s she’s owned since freshman year of college. she likes to be able to move easily ( bc homegirl absolutely cannot walk in heels at all ). despite what the tabloids like to call her unfortunate choice in footwear, she likes to look cute, often pairing them with short, flowy sundresses or skirts + crop tops. when she shoots games, however, she’s dressed rather practically in skinny jeans, a crop top, and a cardigan. her hair is often kept down and loose, or in a messy bun.
𝐎𝐎𝐂
it me. ollie again. i also play fitz ( miguel bernardeau fc ). yes the overlap between fitz and ayla is not great but i truly only know one thing that that one thing is hockey asldfalsdjf sO. if y’all seeing me rping with myself on the dash bc i think it’d be fun to bounce fitz and ayla off each other mind ur own business...

Monetary Advisors, Monetary Planners And Investment Managers
Banking trading Lebanon Final week, Senator Sanders (I - VT) and Consultant Ocasio-Cortez (D - NY) advocated for permitting the U.S. Postal Service to have interaction in basic banking providers. Without all the hassle associated with traditional enterprise loan, personal lenders similar to Service provider Advisors have helped small businesses and young entrepreneurs succeed by providing small business funding on quick and simple terms. Develop a good business plan, then apply for a enterprise license, get a financial institution contact listing, bid on projects, market your foreclosure Financial institution Lebanon cleaning enterprise, promote in the property preservation listing, get list of REO asset administration firms. Make sure you think about two other points of the enterprise financing; they're working capital for day by day operations, and some kind of plan for long run growth or expansion. Another financing firm that might launch funds inside a day to a maximum of five days, StreetShares is great for companies with low revenue. With evolving know-how and the impact of digital trade on banking technology, banks have embraced new tech-tendencies which are specially designed to cater the widening needs of the business homes and organizations. By the end of two years our college students would have gained information in subjects like insurance , taxation, managerial abilities, safety evaluation, worldwide banking and foreign exchange and so forth. Swain found no proof, as required beneath a 2013 decision from the federal appeals court docket in Manhattan, that the companies had been a substantial factor in the attacks, and that the plaintiffs' accidents have been a reasonably foreseeable consequence. Private Fairness Actual Property is a world asset class and in 2007, 46% of capital raised was centered on the US, 26% was centered on Europe and 27% was focusing on Asia and the remainder of the world. Demand to put money https://www.fnb.com.lb/Products-and-Services/Loans/Pages/business-corporate-loans-Lebanon.aspx into a sustainable manner is rising, significantly in Europe, even when the definition of what this implies can vary - something regulators in Europe need to deal with. In such a state of affairs, on-line business banking services can really solve your downside and assist you to in getting required finance to grow and handle your enterprise. Subsequently, all one must do before going to investment consultants, go through the critiques and shared experiences of the people, since your cash will be at risk. When you've an automation plan in your hand, firstly put it to use in a pilot mission instead of deploying straight. Banks also look for details about credit score scores of the company and its repayment history. Whereas some of these phrases and the actual ABL facility itself might sound ' new ' the reality is that the sort of financing has been taking place for decades in the U.S. and is enjoying extra recognition everyday. Factoring Accounts Receivable Invoices enables a business entity that normally has to attend 30 days or longer to be paid by other businesses or governmental entities. This issues as a result of ceaselessly investor consent is required to restructure loans and provide aid to distressed borrowers. ♥ Hii I'm back. Btw, this story is from another fandom i wanted it to share it with you. Maybe it makes you and a few others happy ♥
22 ♥ … Later, Damen learns that the kid hasn’t claimed anything, that most of the claims were made for him or followed him from his previous school, VT High School. He learns that the only reason people weren’t boring their eyes into his back on his first day back was because they were too busy boring it into the new kid’s with the skin issues on his sixth day.23 ♥“How was my favorite son’s first day back?” his mother greets him with a copious dinner, steak and veggies and side dishes that will last them for days. “It was very good,” Damen says, smiling. They eat their roasted vegetables, Damen does the dishes, then they both on the couch with Netflix. When she falls asleep, Damen carries his tiny mother to bed, pulls the covers, then apologizes for ruining her life and chasing his dad away, the same way he always does when she’s finally asleep.24 ♥ Damen goes to the pool before school today. He puts on his silicone swim cap and his speedos and dives head first. He does five laps of Breaststroke, three of Freestyle, and two of Butterfly. The latter is the toughest but he needs to work on his upper body, and it’s proving to be the most effective. By the time he’s finished, he is exhausted and happy. He lets himself float before the pool starts filling up with other people and spreads his limbs in a star shape25 ♥ He floats for a few minutes, closes his eyes, and breathes through his nose, doing his very best to ignore the smell of chlorine and chemicals. He dives into the water until he reaches the bottom then comes back up again. He plays around the pool like a child and lets water heal him how it knows so very well to. Water all over and around him.26 ♥ When he is in water, he is not surrounded by air. He is free from it, from him, from everything. Only in water is he completely free. Or fire, he thinks, then shakes his head. The only reason he started swimming in the first place was because his therapist recommended to establish or at least attempt a relationship with water as opposed to fire.27 ♥ And while he was skeptical at first, Damen ended up falling in love with it. The water. It kept his mind off of air and fire. Fire… Laurent… Damen doesn’t know why his mind flashes to the new kid and his skin condition, but it does.28 ♥ They don’t have many classes together despite both being third years. Damen is in creative arts and Laurent is in science, he learns. He sees him running from one class to another in the countless layers he bundles himself in. He sees him running from the library to the counselor’s office. He sees him running from the counselor’s office to the entrance of the school.29 ♥ Damen sees him running everywhere, suddenly hyper aware of his every movement. And his body almost tingles whenever Laurent walks past him in the hallways—although the boy never spares him a glance. It’s almost pathetic how he wishes the boy would spare him a glance.30 ♥ Damen isn’t sure why but he feels somehow connected to the new kid with the weird skin condition. He had once been the kid with the weird mental condition and weird mental breakdown after all. He had been the kid at the receiving end of ‘What if it’s just made up? What does bipolar even mean?’ and all of Arvid and his group of bullies’ torments.31 ♥ He notices that Laurent doesn’t have any friends, that he doesn’t speak to anyone and that nobody speaks to him. When he isn’t in classes, he’s usually in the library with a book, or somewhere Damen can’t see him.32 ♥ “What’s your obsession with this guy?” Lydos asks when they’re both smoking in the yard while Damen hurts his neck trying to catch a glimpse of Laurent doing his daily run from the building to the gates. “I’m not obsessed with him,” Damen scoffs, pulling his black ray bans down so that everyone could stop looking at where his eyes are wandering to. “Dude, no offense. I know you like underdogs and stuff, but that guy is not an underdog.”33 ♥ “What do you mean?”, “I heard he’s actually pretty horrible and mean.” Damen rolls his eyes. Has Lydos seen the kid? He looks absolutely harmless and adorable in his huge puffer jacket and his two thousand layers. He actually wore a beanie to school today, and Damen could almost see his eyes. He can’t believe he doesn’t know the color of his eyes yet. But it’s okay, because at least he got to see his flushed cheeks.34 ♥ “Seriously, he’s quite a bitch. Don’t go near him. I’m serious. He’s like those cute little dogs that bite you if you get too close,” says Lydos. “He’ll rip you a new one.”.. “Oh, wouldn’t that be nice,” Damen smiles. “Shut up! God!”.. Laurent is not horrible and mean. He’s as harmless as Damen imagines him to be. He’s worked on this script in his head the night before. He knows he can make it work. If this boy won’t meet his eyes, Damen would give him a reason to.35 ♥ So that Wednesday afternoon, Damen waits for it to hit 13:58 right outside of the library. He knows Laurent sees the counselor at 14:00 because Damen’s session is right before his. Only this time, Damen faked a bathroom emergency to let himself out early and camp outside the library. Laurent should be coming out any second now. It all works according to plan. Well, almost. The doors swing open and Laurent and his twenty-one layers nearly bump into him, nearly.36♥ It’s as though Laurent’s body is conditioned to feel another being’s presence and stop or change its route right on time. He’s like those self-driving cars that know exactly when to pull the breaks. Laurent, however, seems shaken from the near proximity, and his eyes—blue, so blue, a beautiful contrast to the red on his cheeks, so red—are wide and scared. He’s breathless and Damen almost feels bad. He feels terrible.37♥ Perhaps Laurent really made this whole thing up because he cannot stand to be touched. Perhaps Damen is making him uncomfortable by stripping him of his personal freedom and forcing him into a triggering situation. “Are you crazy?”, Damen has spent a few days imagining the first words Laurent would say to him, but these weren’t on the list. “A little bit actually. Yeah,” Damen smiles. “Forgive me if I—”..“Don’t do this again. Are you new or something? You can’t come near me.”38♥ Damen does see fear in the short moments they spend staring at each other. But it is not fear of being touched. It is not fear of holding one’s gaze. Laurent doesn’t look half as withdrawn as Damen pictured him to be. If anything, he is glowing with confidence and self-assuredness. He is glowing with it, but he is taming it. It’s being strangled by an all too consuming fear: the fear of hurting a being, not of being hurt.39♥ Laurent walks away after that and Damen is still buzzing from the warmth and the heat that just spread inside him. He’s smiling to himself as though he’s just been injected with a happiness serum, the same one people who do not suffer from depression believe exist. Being near this kid is similar to standing next to a fireplace in Christmas with a hot cup of chocolate milk, and Damen’s fingers are aching to touch, to hurt with it if it’s going to hurt.♥ hope this doesnt annoy you, byee youre not annoying me but tbh im way too lazy to keep copy and pasting every single one of these messages in order so if you wanna share this story and post it properly then i can check it out that way!

I bring it down and up and over to this location and I've got approval and I'm doing it now what we do is just pour a new wall and it's huge it's going in right now and we're going to move the old wall and it says we need to use a lot of poop below and so I'm going to try and move sections and we're going to use temper sections and those sections are huge and they're from your bunkers even contaminated ones a certain level and it's approved is only makes us stronger and I'm going to go ahead and do that now I'm taking the poop to the shatter dome we're going to call them that because we're using there. We realize there's a schedule and a time frame I'm getting you an apartment and we're working very hard on it and we're going to take over this entire state and we get Godzilla and Godzilla out of there he says he needs people to just feed constantly so we need someone who's going to sit there and just feed the thing and thought has been doing it but we need to assign someone or someone else to assign themselves as time to sit there and feed and we have people who do that kind of work so we're going to have a meeting with them and find out who wants to do it and we hear someone grandson he says so I want you to sign up for it volunteer for it and get your crew going he says I don't want to stop and wake up if I don't have to do it and it hasn't been done because that's what he's counting on moving in you know
I agree it's what's required and we're also putting teams together to come in here and take care of business
Savage Oppress
All of this is approved and we're moving the wall now tons of people going to flow out of the Midwest we need them to get out it's almost empty but we're clearing as we can and he said that I need assistance now and our people do so what we want to do is clear clear towns and somehow just not let people back in so he said we're going to have to use walls it takes too long to go back and forth to keep people out of a place so you have to start rolling it off systematically we can do that and we're going to use their bunkers he said we need them out of there we need to use them as a mix so we're going to start doing that now it's starting somewhere it says Wichita that's what we're going to do then we'll just start moving their walls it'll be a huge wall moving within our wall taking it every single person out and sorting
Thor Freya
There's really no way to do it otherwise just keep finding people there
We approve this message and we had before and we're doing it to a degree we're recording off cities and towns and we just scanning and going after people it is working that way and he says we'll proceed and necessarily need a wall across the whole place but we do need to wall off pathways in and out so it's a question and if we walk off the city and while off a city and you make a big wall it connects to the big one and just keep pushing it out actually might be a way to do it but it's going to be a gigantic wall only as long as what we have and if you take a 60 mile bunker you can make it like 2 mi high or so and it would be almost across the half the state with one bunker we go ahead and do that it's feasible and realistic so I'm going to do that and we're going to connect cities they're going to take those pieces that are only around the cities and use them there's a small pieces compared to what he's saying we could do simply cut a 60 mi section like two or three miles and just plop it down in place or 30 and 30 that's what I'm going to do and it'll clear it and we'll start now

Road Trip 2021: The Bike Bits
15 September - 27 October 2021
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last two dozen posts in Gravelish have all been about bike rides taken during a just completed six-week road trip from Seattle to the east coast with M. This summary post provides links to all of the individual rides and a bit of an overview.
The primary motivation for the trip was our desire to visit New England in the fall. Doing it by car worked since we both enjoy the long drives, we figured we could manage the COVID complications better than flying between big cities, and heck, because we're retired and we have lots of time.
I waffled about bringing the bike, figuring it would complicate the travel, that it might detract from our mutual enjoyment of the trip, and that I might not end up riding very much anyway. As it turned out, it was a great addition. I often rode early in the morning while M exercised back in the room. We usually hit the road around 10:00, having gotten some exercise, eaten, and ready for a day of driving.
Our trip lasted 43 days and covered a little more than 9000 miles. I rode another 450 miles on the bike, in 26 separate rides. Most lasted 1 - 2 hours and were 10-20 miles in length.
The map shows the locations of the rides. You can infer our route, but basically we headed east on a more northerly route and returned west on a slightly more southerly one.
Tumblr media
The following list links to the posts for each ride. Each post includes a map and a link to Ride with GPS for anyone who wants to check the details or copy the route to their own wish list.
9-16. Missoula: Deer Creek (18.5 miles)
9-17. Missoula: Grant Creek (12.4 miles)
9-18. Gardiner MT: Old Yellowstone Trail (16.1 miles)
9-19. Sheridan WY: West of town (13.0 miles)
9-20. Sheridan WY: Goose Creek (9.0 miles)
9-21. Custer SD: Little French Creek (16.5 miles)
9-22. Sioux Falls SD (20.0 miles)
9-23. Minneapolis MN (27.8 miles)
9-25. Sturgeon Bay WI (13.5 miles)
9-27. Ludington MI: Big Sable Light (20.5 miles)
9-28. Ann Arbor MI (12.8 miles)
9-29. Erie PA: Presque Isle (18.2 miles)
10-1. Syracuse NY: Onondaga Lake (16.1 miles)
10-3. Burlington VT: Island Line Trail (22.2 miles)
10-5. Littleton NH: Streeter Pond Loop (13.7 miles)
10-6. Conway NH: Passaconway Road (14.7 miles)
10-7. Gorham NH: Pinkham Notch (23.1 miles)
10-8. Acadia ME: Cadillac Mountain (20.7 miles)
10-10. Acadia ME: Park Loop (21.0 miles)
10-13. South Portland ME (34.3 miles)
10-14. Portland ME: Back Cove (8.1 miles)
10-17. Youngstown OH: Mill Creek (14.0 miles)
10-18. Indianapolis IN (8.7 miles)
10-19. Des Moines IA (22.1 miles)
10-23. Steamboat Springs CO: Clark Loop (20.4 miles)
10-27. Sisters OR: Toward McKenzie Pass (19.0 miles)
All of the routes were scouted on the computer, and usually mapped in Ride with GPS, beforehand. I tried to find rides that followed good bike-friendly routes and that captured the essence of the area. Random and unplanned rides on busy roads through suburban business parks don't do much for me (and often look much the same from one part of the country to another).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The weather usually cooperated, although it was often pretty cold. I typically started around 7:00 which, given the time of year, meant that I saw a lot of sunrises. The rides ranged from rural to urban, on both roads and bike paths, and included both gravel and pavement. Some were flat, others hilly, although none were serious alpine climbs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can't pick a favorite ride - they were all different and they were all enjoyable. It's hard to compare the double track above Deer Creek east of Missoula with the Park Loop around Acadia or the paths along the Central Canal in Indianapolis. Watching sunrise in the Black Hills is different than watching it rise over Casco Bay. Riding 20 miles in a big loop around Sioux Falls SD is neat, but so is visiting lighthouses south of Portland ME. And Portland Head Light is not the same as Big Sable Light on Lake Michigan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bike trails around Minneapolis and Burlington and Des Moines are all different. So are Presque Isle on Lake Erie and Pinkham Notch in the White Mountains, but both were great rides. Mill Creek in Youngstown was a pleasant and unexpected surprise. Riding on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route north of Steamboat Springs was inspiration for much longer future rides.
I plan to do a separate post about traveling with a bike (as opposed to traveling on a bike). I'm not sure my experience on this trip will apply to others, but maybe it will provide some hints.

Bringing the team back | Economy

Bringing the team back | Economy
Tumblr media
With more people getting vaccinated against COVID-19, businesses are considering if it’s time to bring workers back to the office. Some may be skittish as the rate of infection is also on the rise in New Hampshire and other states. And many workers want to remain remote even after the pandemic is no longer a threat.
A recent survey of 1,000 workers across the U.S. by Robert Half, a national staffing and recruiting firm with offices in Manchester, Nashua and Portsmouth, shows only 25 percent want to work fully in the office while 26 percent want to be fully remote and 49 percent prefer a hybrid approach, working remote and in the office. The survey found one in three professionals currently working from home would look for a new job if required to return to the office.
As such, determining when and how to bring back a remote workforce, deciding who must come back and managing the potential cultural and health concerns is a bit like a 3-D jigsaw puzzle that must be approached from many angles.
The first logical question is whether the organization is better with workers onsite, says Amy Cann, managing partner at HR-ROI, an HR consulting and training firm in Portsmouth. Has there been a dip in productivity, quality or customer satisfaction while being remote? Cann says it is appropriate to ask workers what they prefer and conduct a survey, but make it clear that the company is assessing options and needs to do what is best to support the organization’s needs.
Among those undergoing such an evaluation is one of the state’s largest employers, Southern N.H. University. “Like so many businesses, we were put into this one-year test asking, ‘What does remote work look like?’ We have 11,000 employees; many are adjunct professors who were already remote. We had about 3,000 who came into work every day, and overnight last year, they all went remote,” says Danielle Stanton, SNHU’s executive vice president of human resources.
She says in summer 2020, the university took a step back to evaluate its options. “We were not seeing a decrease in productivity, and we were seeing an increase in engagement,” Stanton says. SNHU researched what other companies were doing and launched a remote work survey. “It was a hot topic. People really wanted to share with us,” she says. “We had a 93 percent response rate, and 65 percent said they wanted to continue to work fully remote post COVID. If they couldn’t be fully remote, they at least wanted a hybrid. They didn’t really want to come back into the office. They were feeling productive. It gave them greater work-life balance.”
While trying to figure out the best approach, some companies are taking advantage of the slower summer season to extend remote work while testing the waters of workers’ preferences for the fall. Philip Lapp, managing partner at Gallagher, Flynn & Co., says the CPA firm has about 90 people between two offices, in Lebanon and Burlington, Vt. “About two-thirds of our people are remote, and we have broached getting back a little bit. I suspect due to our workflow, we will be pretty flexible over the summer and not pull people back sooner than they are comfortable,” he says. “We have gotten a lot of feedback from people concerned that if there was a requirement to come back, they might not feel ready yet.”
However, Lapp says, from an efficiency standpoint, the virtual workplace environment is clearly not as efficient in some cases.
He found experienced CPAs were able to work remotely effectively and be independent while new staff required more mentoring, which is easier to accomplish in person. “We’ll attack it by levels,” says Lapp. “For us there is a big difference between the staff right out of college and people who have been in the industry for many years. It is very difficult to get people up to speed in a virtual work environment. Some will spend more time in the office, but we may be able to offer more flexibility to those with more seniority.”
Employers are not generally allowed to ask health-related questions under normal circumstances. But as Cann of HR-ROI explains, the pandemic is anything but normal, and employers are allowed to ask employees if they have had a COVID-19 vaccine or tested negative. “You can ask about the vaccine, but if they say no, they haven’t had it, you are not allowed to inquire further unless it is mandatory,” she says.
In cases where a vaccine is legally mandated, such as health-care facilities, employees can still opt out for health reasons under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or for religious reasons (under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act). For ADA exemptions, an employer can ask for documentation from a doctor.
“With religious choice you cannot require documentation as long as it is a ‘sincerely held religious belief,’ but employers need to be very careful about questioning unless they have a tangible reason to doubt the person,” says Cann.
However, if someone doesn’t want the vaccine for purely personal reasons, that is their choice but the employer does not have to accommodate them, says Cann.
Lapp, of Gallagher, Flynn & Co., says they are still trying to work through the issue of vaccinations. While they might prefer those working onsite to be vaccinated, it is possible a client may require it, which could affect the ability of non-vaccinated staff to participate in an audit at the client site.
COVID protocols, such as masking and social distancing, must still be in place for safety and liability for the foreseeable future, says Cann. For some businesses, a hybrid model for returning to work is attractive as it allows for more social distancing in the workplace. “Would a hybrid model work with two onsite days, the rest remote? Can you stagger onsite days so not everyone is there at once? Hybrid models can make the space and separation easier,” she says.
As for deciding whether or not to bring people back to the office, making assumptions can be dangerous, says Cann. She says clients have asked if a worker is age 65, should they just not bring them back. “You can’t make any assumptions based on factors such as pregnancy or age. Let them tell you. If you know about something, you can start the conversation, but don’t make any assumptions,” Cann says.
There is also the possibility that remote work during the pandemic has established a precedent, which Cann says could be a real problem for employers. “The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission administers the ADA enforcement and will ask employers what has changed. Why can’t they still work at home now?”
Documentation is important when making personnel decisions to safeguard against accusations of retaliation, says Cann. “If you make an accommodation grudgingly and then retaliate in some form — pass someone over for promotion or lay them off — this is far worse than an ADA claim. Retaliation was the highest discrimination claim in the country last year.”
If an employer and employee are at an impasse over returning to work and the job requires them to be physically present, employers can consider transferring them to a job that is open that they are qualified to do and that allows them to be remote.
However, other accommodations may be available. Cann recommends using the Job Accommodation Network (AskJan.org) for COVID-19 resources and information on accommodating disabilities.“You want to provide economic benefit, and that is why these ADA protections exist,” says Cann. “Everyone deserves an opportunity to earn a living.”
Regardless of what a company decides, it won’t be business as usual. “It is never going to be like it was,” says Stanton. “We are not going to have all of our employees coming back into the office, and it is really a culture shift because we must look at all our programs and make sure we can support our workforce in this way.”
Everyone is experiencing the pandemic differently, says Cann.
“We have to remember our own experience is not the same as others. Be mindful and have empathy, but don’t be apologetic for having to bring people back to run your business or nonprofit,” she says.
If someone is struggling, it may be that a more flexible schedule will help. If social interaction is causing stress, noise-canceling headphones or a quieter section of the office may help. An employee assistance program (EAP) is a great option, says Cann.
“Imagine having to transition back to the workplace having lost one or more family members,” she says. “You want to keep good workers and show them you care. EAP is a smart investment. But if you can’t afford it, 211.org will direct people to community resources with free or a sliding-scale charge for services.”
Jennifer Hayes, HR practice leader at Clark & Lavey Benefits Solutions in Merrimack, says the shift to remote work combined with pandemic stress presents a challenge to managers.
“Particularly in New England, coming out of a long winter and a year of remote work, the isolation and [resulting] mental health present bigger questions. ‘My employees aren’t next to me anymore. How do I know if they are healthy? What do I need to offer them?’ So, it involves a very different management style,” she says.
Lapp says he believes the strain on mental health will remain an important challenge. “I think about it from the tax season aspect. You cannot wind up in a month and wind back down in a month. Similarly, winding down from the effects of the pandemic could take a year or more. It may be a fairly long down-ramp for people to be comfortable and deal with the mental health issues that have arisen in the past year,” he says.
Among the challenges identified through the SNHU survey of its employees are people not feeling connected to their peers and missing those informal interactions that would happen walking down the hallway. Sometimes collaboration is challenging in a remote capacity.
“What we’ve done in the past won’t work in the future; we learned a lot from our remote employees. When there were team meetings, people (dialing in) felt that they were not heard,” says Stanton. “How do we create a space where everyone can have a voice and be heard?”
Drawing on the feedback from the survey, SNHU created a new program it is rolling out in July called Synergy, which creates different place-based options: anyplace, dual place (a hybrid) and in place for those who must be on campus every day.
Employees may have a flex or set schedule. Many positions do not have to happen within set hours. Stanton says most employees were already set to work remotely through the end of June, but students will be back on campus this fall.
“How you determine where you land as an employee is based on a conversation,” says Stanton. “We are training our leaders to have this conversation with their employees. We are really empowering them to follow a road map we have created to determine the right place.”
The roadmap looks at the following: Why does the job exist? Who does it support? Is it supporting students on campus? Can it be done virtually? Do they need regular collaboration? Do they have a set schedule when they must be available for students? What does the employee prefer?
Stanton says SNHU even has some employees with “any place” jobs who want to come back to campus and have the connection to coworkers. “Listening to employees, getting feedback, adapting and changing, engagement is really important to us,” she says. “I’d like to say we have it all figured out, but I don’t think we do. Through the Synergy program I expect we will learn a lot and continue to iterate and change.”
Hayes says she expects many larger companies will have options. “I think we will see a lot of hybrid,” says Hayes. “For the larger companies tied to a long-term lease, to stay competitive, they are going to create an environment with more collaboration space and where you’ll see teams coming in on alternating days allowing people to still work from home and have the benefit of both worlds.”
She says smaller companies may favor more remote work because it has such a big effect on the bottom line, and they are usually in shorter-term leases. Now businesses are figuring out how to interview and onboard remotely, how to have an engaged workforce and make sure employees have career goals.
Paul Clark, CEO of Clark & Lavey Benefits Solutions, says there is the potential for employee benefits to include home office costs. “Employees may be looking for a higher salary since a company no longer has to pay for their space. The return for employers is not immediate though.”
He also says employers need to be prepared for a potential productivity cliff. “Some people might be working harder as a result of ‘work from home guilt,’ a feeling they are lucky to get that perk. Right now, productivity is up,” says Clark. “A year from now will it stay the same? As the economy reopens, post-vaccination, and people feel comfortable going out, there will be more forces pulling at their focus.”
As a direct result of the pandemic, Gallagher, Flynn & Co. hired out-of-state remote workers. “It’s something we would never have done before,” says Lapp. “Communication is the key, and just like in person, cultural fit is very important. Going forward, not in a pandemic, we will definitely bring people in for a week at the front end of a remote hire. In this case, these are folks we have never met in person, and that is really tough from a relationship standpoint.”
Employees may not have to take so much time off for doctor’s visits anymore as another potentially permanent shift due to the pandemic is the increased use of telemedicine. “If one can try to find a positive in a pandemic, it is that the physician community realized if they didn’t get onboard with telemedicine, patients would go elsewhere,” says Paul Clark, CEO of Clark & Lavey Benefits Solutions in Merrimack. “We have seen a 50 percent spike in telehealth visits across the board, large and small companies.”
Clark says employers with self-funded health insurance plans are not feeling the sticker shock as employers with premium carriers. “We do a lot of self-funded medical plans, and our highest increase for January renewals was 6 percent. We are seeing the premium carriers charging 20 percent to 30 percent as they try to recoup profits. A self-funded plan doesn’t need to recoup anything.”
He says the predicted tidal wave of medical costs from delayed elective procedures and deferred care has not shown up even as economies and practices reopened, although some carriers are charging a premium in anticipation of that bubble, he adds.

Updated BTU Act introduced in House
Tumblr media
Reps. Anne Kuster, D-N.H.; Mike Kelly, R-Pa.; Peter Welch, D-Vt.; and Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, on Might 14 launched an up to date Biomass Thermal Utilization Act, which goals to supply tax credit for business and industrial wooden heating home equipment.
Following its introduction, the invoice was referred to the Home Committee on Methods and Means. Companion laws was introduced by Sens. Angus King, I-Maine, and Susan Collins, R-Maine, in April. That invoice was referred to the Committee on Finance.
A tax credit score for residential wooden heating home equipment was established final 12 months. In late 2020, President Trump signed a legislative package that included sure provisions of an earlier model of the BTU Act. That invoice established a three-year funding tax credit score (ITC) for high-efficiency residence heating gear that fires wooden pellets, chips, or cordwood.
The present residential credit score applies to the put in price of residence heating and scorching water methods that make the most of wooden pellets, chips and cordwood at efficiencies larger than 75 p.c excessive warmth worth. The ITC is for 26 p.c in 2021 and phases right down to 22 p.c in 2022 and 2023.
The up to date BTU Act laws launched this spring goals to enact the same credit score for business and industrial functions. Particularly, the invoice goals so as to add biomass gas property to the checklist of present applied sciences that qualify for the Part 48 enterprise ITC at an preliminary charge of 30 p.c earlier than expiring on the finish of 2028. To qualify, the biomass gas property should function at a thermal effectivity charge of not less than 75 p.c and be used to both warmth house throughout the dwelling or warmth water. The invoice would additionally restore the prevailing Part 25 ITC for residential wooden heating methods to 30 p.c, whereas additionally extending the credit score by way of 2028.
“Trendy wooden boilers and heating methods are important to transitioning away from fossil fuels,” Kuster mentioned. “Incentivizing this selection not solely ranges the taking part in discipline but in addition helps help a robust wooden merchandise financial system in New Hampshire and throughout the nation. I’m happy that tax incentives for households trying to set up these methods of their non-public residences turned regulation final 12 months, and now it’s time to prolong that very same alternative to business enterprise locations. I’m proud to reintroduce this bipartisan laws, and I’ll proceed working in Congress to advance sensible power options for generations to come back.”
“The Pellet Fuels Institute cheers the introduction of the BTU Act and sees it as a recognition that trendy pellet heating can present the identical sustainable and renewable thermal power resolution for companies and establishments that it might for personal residences,” mentioned Tim Portz, govt director of the Pellet Fuels Institute.
“Environment friendly use of sustainable biomass for thermal power is a crucial choice for US decarbonization of the C&I sector, and notably for top temperature thermal wants,” mentioned Dan Wilson, board chair of the Biomass Thermal Power Council. “This power pathway will develop a key helpful use marketplace for residues from the sustainable agriculture and forestry sectors, whereas changing fossil gas use and creating native jobs.  The BTU Act would guarantee trendy, clear, and environment friendly power conversion methods are inspired, and start to appropriate the disparity in coverage therapy for this pathway as in comparison with different power sources and pathways.”
Extra info on the invoice, H.R. 3251, is on the market on the Congress.gov website.
