@greenapricot and@thehobbitbadgerasked for resolution on Alma’s favor in the last bit of 'wake myself in the shadows'. There are some CWS for this one which are also spoilers, so they're in the tags, scroll to view them first if you have any concerns. Not out to jump scare anyone!
Alma: I need that ride.
Izzy: when?
Alma: Tuesday at 2pm
Izzy: where am I picking you up?
Alma: I’ll come to you.
She arrived in sweatpants and a sweatshirt that had a Southern State logo crumbling off it. No makeup. Instead of her usual little purse, she carried a tote bag. It was deeply disconcerting.
Izzy, as promised, did not ask.
“Want anything before we go?”
“No. I’ve got the address.”
In the car, she plugged her phone in, put her GPS on the screen then started a throbbing playlist that drowned out all possible conversation. Izzy followed the directions and kept his eyes on the road. A half hour later, he made the final turn and she abruptly stopped the music.
“I might be there a while. You can drop me off. I’ll text when I’m ready.”
“Fuck that,” he found a parking spot. “I’ll wait with you.”
“No, I…” Alma looked at the unassuming office building. “I can do it on my own.”
“So fucking what? You think they’re handing out medals for that?”
“But-“ she started then stopped. “Okay. Yeah. I’m…I’m maybe a little freaked out.”
“Let’s go then.”
Inside it was just a very practical doctor’s office. Everything in shades of brown and tan. Alma gave her information at the desk then came to sit next to him in the waiting area.
“I won’t tell him,” Izzy told her, flipping through a magazine he wasn’t reading.
“I might,” she rested her head in his shoulder, “but not today.”
They had to wait a long time. Alma took his magazine and Izzy did Sudoku on his phone until her name was called. She got to her feet, squared her shoulders and disappeared through a door.
Izzy was good at waiting. He took slow even breaths and let teh time wash over him.
Not even forty-five minutes later, she shuffled back out, looking even paler than usual.
“Done?”
“Done,” she gave him a slight smile. “Get me out of here, it smells like a canister of cheap air freshener came all over a bottle of antiseptic.”
“Vivid and fucking accurate. Let’s go.”
She didn’t punch the music this time, even let him use his own phone.
“I thought I might be upset,” she said, settling into the seat. “But I am so goddamn relieved, I could cry.”
“Not surprised. If you didn’t want it.”

Whats the bravest thing lucius has gotten into izzys closest and that he’s actually worn
(I started so many racy ideas here then realized that none of that would get to Izzy more than this)
He was folding his laundry when he found it. Lucius liked to do that sometimes, stuff something unexpected into the hamper for Izzy to find later like a particularly devious squirrel. There had been some wild shit, including a pair of underwear that Izzy still couldn’t look at unless he wanted to throw off his whole morning schedule.
This was something else. It was simple enough. Just a black tank top, the kind he wore to go to the gym or run. Except on the chest where a small embroidered logo might go, there was a rainbow. A flag.
Izzy sat down hard on the bed, holding it in his hands. It wasn’t ostentatious. It was as subtle as a vibrant rainbow could be. But it was saying something. It was announcing something. He rubbed the material between his fingers. It was soft, probably comfortable.
He folded it and set it on top of his other workout clothes, then pressed the entire pile into a drawer and closed it firmly. Unfortunately, that didn’t close off the thought of it.
Could he just do that?
Lucius would. Lucius wore his sexuality like a badge of pride. He dared people to make something of it. It was bravery that Izzy had learned to respect and now, to envy. Before he’d lost Eddy, before his world had shifted so hard on its axis that he no longer recognized it, Izzy had thought he was brave.
Now he suspected he’d just been a bit dead inside.
Lucius didn’t bring up the tank top next time he was over. Most of the time he liked to cajole Izzy into his choices, or outright order him which only made it better, but there was a silent agreement that this could not be one of those times.
There had to just be a day. An ordinary enough day when he was going to the gym and then the grocery store. Nowhere he’d ever felt uncomfortable. It was hot which helped. The kind of summer day when you knew it was going to be boiling by noon just from the heave of the air conditioner.
He pulled it on and gave his reflection a quick look. He hadn’t changed. It was only a tiny blotch of color.
The gym was just down the street. He preferred to get his miles in at home, but he didn’t have room for an entire weight setup, so a few times a week he burned an hour or two there. He’d gotten a little lax for awhile, but now there was Jim to keep up with. Not to mention the way Lucius showed his appreciation for a little hard work.
There was barely anyone out yet, and he walked into the gym without seeing another person. Inside, it was fairly quiet, too early on a weekend day to be crowded. He got in most of his lifting with only a few other familiar faces around him. None of them paid him any mind, too focused on their own workout.
Just when he was on his last rep on the leg press, Probably A Fucking Cop walked by. Izzy had noticed him enough to mentally tag him. He was closer to Izzy’s age, steel gray hair cut short in a way that screamed law enforcement. They were often here at the same time, but Izzy never talked to anyone and Probably A Fucking Cop didn’t either.
Except today as he went to pass by, he slowed down. His eyes flicked to the shirt and then, to Izzy’s intense shock, Probably A Fucking Cop checked him out. It wasn’t even subtle, the dragging gaze and the speculative look.
Their eyes met and Probably A Fucking Cop’s head tilted ever so slightly. The least possible effort into invitation.
Izzy did fifteen more reps, eyes glued to the tips of his sneakers until he was absolutely positive the guy had moved the fuck on. Jesus fucking fuck.
“What the fuck do I do with that?” Izzy demanded when he explained the whole thing to Lucius. They were in the bathroom, Lucius showering off the workday. Izzy had just followed him in to rant and Lucius had let him, closing the curtain between them with a wink.
“You know what I’d do with it,” Lucius laughed.
“Yeah, I’m not fucking a cop in a public changing room,” Izzy rolled his eyes.
“Which is why I have more fun than you,” Lucius teased. They both knew that Izzy’s traitorously loyal heart could not deal with fucking someone else, no matter how much else he'd changed. “But Iz, it’s okay just to take it as a compliment and move on.”
“I’ve never been made like that,” he admitted.
“I bet you have.” The curtain rustled, Lucius reaching for the soap. “And you just didn’t know it.”
“How?” he frowned. “I get why it happened wearing that thing but-”
“I’ve watched it happen to you,” Lucius cut him off.
“So people just know?”  What a fucking disturbing thought.
“It’s not like you wear a neon sign or anything. Some people can just sort of tell by the way you look at them or the vibe.”
“Are you saying people are hitting on me and I don’t fucking notice?”
“Yeah, goblin,” Lucius was clearly tickled by the idea. “That guy at the camera shop that you always talk about lenses with. Allen?”

...this one is long y'all. It's going to go straight to an AO3 posting, I think and it'll get it's own story because even if no one ever asks about it on it's own, I think it's got the gams to stand alone.

That new Andrew Garfield television show ‘Under The Banner Of Heaven’ is v good and each episode is a really great length and feels satisfying and has great pacing and each episode feels like it ends in a satisfying place so each episode feels full and purposeful and intentional as to why it ends when it does, not just narriatively, but also technically speaking, like almost like a full movie where it’s like “yes of course it ends there” without telegraphing it in really obvious ways the way that with a lot of media you can tell when it’s about to end, and it’s overall really well made and entertaining to watch and it makes me glad that you don’t feel the NEED to binge it because of the way that it’s made makes it feel ok to stop after each episode, which is also really refreshing in a space where most video media rn feels like it encourages audiences to continue binge watching and press play on the next thing and the next thing, be it television shows, movies, online video content, etc. and having a show that’s made in 2022 that provides ample space to stop after each episode, while not feeling over-stuffed or like you have to stop to digest everything, but more like there is space to stop if you want to, is very welcome rn.
Having said that I want to watch the next episode rn like immediately. Not because the show was created to encourage binge-watching it, but because that’s such a great and well made show rn that, comparitively, watching other media that’s being released publicly at the same time as ‘Under The Banner Of Heaven’ is being released rn in 2022, it feels like I’ve been eating chocolate for a week and rn I really want some fruit.

My #1 post of 2022
People who complained in 2012 that Andrew Garfield was too attractive to play Peter Parker probably didn’t read many Spidey comics before then coz Peter Parker’s canonically hot shit. Famous actress and supermodel MJ Watson?? Gwendolyn Stacy?? FELICIA HARDY A.K.A. BLACK CAT?? Literally characters who had no idea that Peter’s Spider-Man wanted to date him AS WELL AS characters who didn’t care much about the Peter Parker side of him. From practically every direction there’s somebody being like “yeah I used to have a crush on him.” like honestly. Yes Peter Parker’s a super intelligent person with a good heart who would literally die to help people, but he also literally married a supermodel.

So, the original plan was to do these quotes until Joe and Cleo finished their models, which was half accomplished during this stream (yay Cleo!). Question is should I still continue these after Joe has finished his model, or have we had enough now? Favourite moments of Joe and Cleo model stream part 7! Link to the video is below and time stamps are above each set of quotes!
Link: https://m.twitch.tv/videos/1155955572
00:32:05
Joe: This is our weekly paper craft stream. I’m joined today by ZombieCleo, who you can find at—
Cleo: Hiiiiiiiiii!!!
Joe: — twitch.tv/zombiecleo. You don’t need to type the “hi” in the middle. Although it is adorable, and so I wouldn’t blame you.
00:56:25
Cleo (in response to someone saying they like Hershey’s chocolate): I mean you can like the chocolate. It’s ok to be wrong. It’s fine. You know, you can—
Joe: A certain amount of the other person being wrong is to be expected in any relationship.
Cleo: Yeah! Look at my relationship with you, Joe.
Joe: Yeah, I mean we’re— we’re off the charts for that.
01:01:15
Joe (changing into his chroma green tank top): We can’t have people seeing my torso.
Cleo: Oh you know, yeah you— you are a cryptid.
01:02:04
Joe (doing a face camera expansion): these chains I’ve forged in life are about to begin pulling me down to the deep below! Enter the Jhoooooooost!
Cleo: Can I just point out that “life” was very southern. At that point. (Heavy southern accent) Life.
Joe (heavy southern accent): Life.
Cleo: Laaaaaffe
Joe: Liiiiife *both laughing* These chains I’ve forged in—
Both: laaaaffe!!
Joe (heavy twang): Pullin’ me daaan to the deep behlooow!
01:07:16
Cleo (in response to Joe having a laughing fit): And that is one of the rare times where Joe has a complete, absolute giggle fit on stream
Joe (still laughing): Ok I’m sorry, but “puritans go home” is the best thing to put on anything worth— ok im gonna start making a— ok. (Serious) Im gonna start making an actual checklist cause, um, (actually writing down a checklist of things he’s taking to his parents for thanksgiving) ok thanks—giving twenty twenty—one. Ok so, salad cream.
Cleo: *wheezing*
Joe (reading list): “Puritans go Home” icing on pie…Um, you know let’s just throw iron brew in there. Why not! Irn-Bru and vodka!
Cleo (laughing): Sure! Why not!
Joe: Yeah. Well, so, my maternal grandmother was Scottish and—
Cleo: oh I’m sorry.
Joe: —so I think my mom would get a kick out of Irn-Bru. As like “oh! Here’s something from the old country!”
Cleo: *physically wheezing* from the old country!
01:29:43
Joe: Oh, it’s really fun. Did you know that a bunch of people on Tumblr care a lot about how tall each of us are?
Cleo: Yeah. Yeah.
Joe: Yeah, oh man I’ve been spreading information and taking weird height pictures with people at conventions for years. It’s like— *Cleo laughing* I’ll intentionally like stand on things or like, uh, or like stand in such a way that you can’t tell I’m crouching, so people are like “Ok, so Joe’s like taller than Bdubs but shorter than, uh, like— Stress or something. It’s like how does that happen?!” *trying not to laugh* Because I’m screwing with you.
01:31:11
Joe: See that’s the thing is— is sometimes people think things are about power. I think they’re just about being obnoxious.
Cleo: I mean, you think most things are about being obnoxious which is why it’s a power move for you. Cause being obnoxious is your power move. It’s where you’ve got the most power, Joe.
Joe: Hm, that makes sense.
Cleo: Sometimes I do. I try not to when I’m with you, because— it’s easier.
Joe: Yeah. You don’t wanna give me any actual like workab— or usable intelligence.
01:42:47
Joe (reading chat): I’ve been on Hermitcraft since season one— yeah. That was only like 10 years ago though.
Cleo: I’ve been on Hermitcraft since season 2.
Joe: Yay Cleo!
Cleo: Which was only because Joe asked me to come on, or pu— vouched for me.
Joe (genuine): Well I am glad you joined.
Cleo: I mean I was— I was at the point where I was just like “is this what I wanna do for the rest of my life? Should I just go full ham into teaching?” And, uh, then you made that offer and I thought “well, I’ll see how it goes”. And it did quite well for me. So…you know.
Joe (quietly): I am so glad
Cleo: You are the reason why I’m still doing Minecraft content.
01:44:19
Joe (reading chat): Attasked says “Only you can judge whether you’re hot” no plenty of people can tell I’m hot, Graved. It’s— pretty blatantly obvious. You don’t— you don’t have to be good at judging to be able to tell. Like, that’s not an only me thing.
02:00:54
Cleo: You ever have those moments where you’re just questioning your choices in life?
Joe: *having a breakdown* Moments!
Cleo: *cackling*
Joe (through tears): I’m sorry, you’re just the best Cleo.
Cleo: *laughing, but genuine* Awe, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to depress you today!
Joe: No it’s— *inaudible sobbing* Today—
Cleo: *dying*
Joe (quietly to himself): Is this is frame? Sorry, I was cutting this out of frame. My bad.
Cleo (still laughing): I like how everyone’s just sort of gone quiet and gone “…is Joe ok?”
Joe: nOO!!!
Cleo: We’ve established that Joe is not ok.
Joe: But I’m really good at it!
Cleo: *spitting out her drink*
01:49:52
Joe: Let’s go down the Mississippi, Cleo.
Cleo: I mean, that I think we could probably do. Let’s go down the Mississippi, Joe.
Joe: yay!
Cleo: On a flimsy raft.
Joe: Yeah, we can actually— there’s a lot nicer boats now though. Like—
Cleo: I mean— yeah, but do we— do— you know…it’s the Huckleberry Finn experience.
Joe: I mean, here’s the thing, is if you actually came here and I was like “Cleo, let’s go to the Mississippi River and go down the river a few miles”. I think you’d be more likely to actually say yes if I had an actual boat lined up than if I had a flimsy raft.
Cleo (excited): If it— if it— if it makes you feel better, I— I would do the flimsy raft. Like, hands down. It seems more fun.
Joe (realizing that she’s serious): I— you say that, but I don’t think you’ve seen the Mississippi River. Like, the problem is it’s full of these giant barges these days, the wakes of which would just throw your raft over.
Cleo (dead serious): I can swim.
Joe (attempting to compromise, completely lost as to how he has somehow managed to be the voice of reason): Ok…Alternatively we can go down a smaller river…In a raft…
02:04:43
Joe: Sorry, I’ll stop monologuing. Uh, but yeah sorry I was in the process of—
Cleo: I’LL STOP MONOLOGUING! Yeah, yeah that’s gonna happen.
Joe: yeah, I’ll- I’ll say I’m gonna stop monologuing and I’ll warn you that-
Cleo: And then he just continues
Joe: -that Cleo you should probably be ready to start talking sometime in the next 8-12 minutes.
02:15:26
Joe: Oh, I need to get a green screen suit jacket. Um, I realized. Cause I got the green screen, um, uh dress shirt. That I wear under existing suits, but I don’t have an actual like green screen suit.
Cleo: I— I am always amused by your definition of “need”
Joe: My definition of what?
Cleo: Need.
Joe: Need.
Cleo: I need a green suit.
Joe: Ok, I’m sorry Cleo, the people need me to get a green suit.
02:30:23
Cleo (reading chat): “Joe-Getters and Go-Getters” yeah, Joe’s not a Go-Getter, he’s a Joe-Getter. Which is infinitely worse.
Joe: You say being a Joe-Getter is infinitely worse, but you also frequently lament that you get me. So, maybe you’re a Joe-Getter. Have you considered that?
Cleo: I am a Joe-Getter. I do get you, Joe. Which is terrible. It’s— It’s a trauma, actually Joe, I’ll have you know.
Joe: Yeah, comprehend me and despair, Cleo.
Cleo: I looked too deep into the abyss. The Joe-byss, sorry.
Joe: Thank you, yeah we’ve got a brand. Always be branding.
Cleo: *giggling* A.B.B. - Always Be Branding.
Joe: That’s not an infinite void of despair. That’s an infinite void of—
Both: Joe’s despair.
02:34:31
Joe: Let’s just leave it at don’t push me off a roof. Like *laughing* I feel like anything I could add to that would undermine the overall theme of just encouraging people to not do that.
Cleo: Um, let me put it like this. I always had the capacity. Always. But! I never acted on it, Joe.
Joe: Mhm, yeah thank you.
Cleo: …yet…I’ll try not to.
Joe: Yeah. And— and also keep in mind Cleo, I mean, given, you know, how well we’ve managed to work together over the last decade. Even if you did push me or throw me off a roof. *grinning* What makes you think that you’re not coming with me?
Cleo (slightly proud): That felt like a threat. It felt like a threat. I’m not gonna lie.
Joe (through giggles): Yeah, that was the, like— I spent 90 seconds figuring out how to revise that so is it was not blatantly like a violent threat.
Cleo: I mean…yeah, I think— I think— I think between the tw— it— it’s a mutual aggression pact at this point.
02:51:53
Cleo (holding up seemingly two identical pictures of turret towers): Am I— am I going actually insane? Are they not…the same turret?
Joe (examining pages on screen): …y—you know there might be…subtle differences that, uh, a— you know, skilled crafts person would find unavoidably blatant. Um…I make no such claim Cleo.
Cleo: Good, because, you know…trauma…Yours, not mine.
Joe: *laughing* yeah I was gonna say. Trauma as a verb. I’m just gonna trauma you.
Cleo: *laughing* I’m gonna trauma you so hard right now.
Joe: Yeah, if you don’t calm down and agree with me.
Cleo: If you don’t agree with me, that’s— that’s your mistake.
03:38:48
Cleo (about authors): just be careful who you like and just recognize the faults in any media that you do like. Just don’t imagine that everything’s perfect, because it’s not. Just be open to the fact it’s not perfect.
Joe: The only perfect media is YouTube videos produced by ZombieCleo.
Cleo: Fact.
04:00:34
(Having finished her model)
Cleo (tiredly): No booshes. No booshes. I know it’s got places for booshes, but I don’t want to do booshes because…there’s a limit.
Joe (currently in the United States): Yeah. Well, now you can come over here and help me Cleo, is what chat’s saying.
Cleo: Ok.
Joe: Go help Joe hold this stuff he can’t glue.
Cleo (Currently in England): Hang on, hang on. *rummaging on desk* What do you need? I’ve got lots of things, what do you need?

I would like another piece of cake please. I am very content if it's more of the black pants and keys. I don't know who Patrick and Marcus thought they were fooling, but there is no way Asa could sneak around without his keys giving him away. I legit hear those keys when he kicks the door open.
Sure thing!

I Want Us Both to Eat Well
Ao3
Summary: Remy might not be great with self-care, but they've got the 'taking care of Logan' thing down to a science. And Logan can work with that. Content: Overworking, mentions of poor eating/sleeping habits, caretaking, it’s pretty soft overall, nonbinary remy Pairing: Losleep
~
Despite what some may think, Logan didn’t have the most demanding of jobs within the mindscape. He wouldn’t call his work a walk in the park, of course, but when he was largely tasked with matters such as scheduling and memory allocation, versus such things as emotional processing or idea creation, Logan had no plans on complaining.
And Logan’s most complicated job? Even less complaints to be figuratively filled, given it was his favorite.
See, for a good while now, Logan had been dating Remy, a figment of the Imagination created by Roman for a one-time vine gag that somehow managed to get enough permanence for themself to function as their own being. For a bit, they had simply wandered about, teasingly flirting with not only the sides but Thomas himself. Something about Logan must have held their attention however, because soon enough he was the only side being ‘bothered’.
It didn’t take long for the feelings of ‘botherment’ to morph into amusement, which furthermore transformed into affection and soon even love. Remy had made a bad attempt at celestial flirting, and despite the inaccuracies, Logan had greatly appreciated the sentiment.
Appreciated it enough to allow “I love you” to escape both his thoughts and mouth, an acknowledgement that had left the two of them in similar states of shock for a whole ten seconds before Remy was in Logan’s lap and doing their damndest to kiss him breathless.

actually am so fuckin sick of seein dnis that say stuff like ‘if you like problematic/shitty media’ bc
-you and i are gonna probably have different definitions of what’s ‘problematic/shitty’ so stupidly unhelpful -normally people give a few examples and when u pair them right with ‘problematic/shitty’ honestly that’s just an asshole move
so like not only have you just been a presumptuous ass to a complete stranger, you probably haven’t even given enough info for them to respect your boundaries! so it helps no one!
just list the fandoms you don’t want fans of followin u and leave it at that my dude! it’s that fuckin simple

Some thoughts on Sextember's last episode:
Link explaining that his fear of abandonment was behind his discomfort and sometimes judgement of Rhett talking about his attraction to people other than Jessie was a little enlightening and I'm glad he made that introspection and told us about it, because I know people often just assumed he acted that way because he thought Christy would be jealous if he made the same statements, but it's not that she's overly jealous, just that anyone in a relationship admitting attraction to other people brought up his own abandonment issues in the past. I'm glad he's been working on that!
Little Locke's "I never even thought of that in my whole life" was incredibly adorable.
Rhett acknowledging trans women are women, actively exploring his own thoughts and fears about what seeing penises and attractive gay men in porn might reveal about his sexuality, everything about that was a Yes Rhett from me! (and I wonder if Link will now be compelled to do some similar experiments)
Mentioning how they don't intend to queerbait and their thoughts on two straight men acting "a little gay-ish" for comedy was very interesting and I'm glad they're consciously considering this sort of thing. (and that they just tend to find it funny to do things that they aren't used to doing together... actual sex between the two of them would be hilarious, wouldn't it) Proud of them for the work they have done to shed the homophobia instilled in them by the church, too.
Overall, proud of them for continuing to question and be open to new ways of thinking and the side notes of "don't assign other people a sexuality" and "keep writing fanfiction if you like to" were important points for them to make and I'm glad they did this series, for the people who were curious and for the goal of furthering their own conversations and thought processes. Some of it may be uncomfortable to listen to for some people, but it's a conversation that should be had, openly!

Who were the “winners” and “losers” of organic search in 2017?
Earlier this week, Searchmetrics published its fourth annual Winners and Losers Report, which reveals how certain sites fared in organic search visibility on Google.com during 2017.
Searchmetrics bases its analysis on a unique indicator known as ‘SEO visibility’, which it uses to measure a webpage’s performance in organic search.
This is not the same as organic search ranking, but aims to give an overview of how often a website shows up in search results, based on “search volume and the position of ranking keywords” (as explained in the Searchmetrics FAQ).
Using this metric, Searchmetrics calculates the change in websites’ SEO visibility over the course of the year, and sorts the top 100 winners and losers by absolute change in visibility.
Last year, we examined the winners and losers in organic search during 2016, and concluded that social media and shopping were the overall “winners”, while online encyclopedias, reference websites and lyrics websites all lost out.
How do the results from this year stack up against last year, and what can we learn from the trends highlighted?
Encyclopedias and dictionaries are back on top
In a surprising reversal of 2016’s fortunes, online encyclopedias and dictionaries were among some of the biggest “winners” in 2017.
Encyclopedias made up 9% of the overall winners by industry, with websites like britannica.com, thesaurus.com and collinsdictionary.com enjoying triple-digit percentage gains in SEO visibility. Of the top five domains ranked by gain in absolute SEO visibility, four were dictionary or encyclopedia websites: Merriam Webster, Wikia, Dictionary.com and Wiktionary.
This is a huge change from last year, when social networking websites dominated the top five; out of last year’s top five “winners”, only YouTube is still on top, rising up the ranks from fourth to first place.
Searchmetrics attributes this miraculous change in fortune to an algorithm update in June 2017 dubbed the “dictionary update”. Dictionary websites had been slowly gaining in visibility since the beginning of the year, but over the three-week period between 25th June and 16th July, they saw an even more notable uptick:
Dictionary websites saw a boost from Google’s “Dictionary update” in June and July 2017
Searchmetrics noted that dictionary URLs particularly improved their ranking for short-tail keywords with ambiguous user intent – suggesting that Google might be examining whether the users searching these terms could be looking for definitions.
I would speculate that Google could also be promoting fact-based reference websites as part of its ongoing efforts to battle fake news and dubious search results – but this is purely speculation on my part.
The trend is also not borne out by Wikipedia, which continues to see its SEO visibility drop as more Knowledge Graph integrations appear for its top keywords, allowing users to see key information from Wikipedia without bothering to click through to the site – and possibly preventing those pages in Wikipedia from ranking.
The losers lost out more on mobile
One very interesting trend highlighted in Searchmetrics’ findings is the fact that domains which lost out in 2017 saw even bigger drops on mobile than on desktop.
Domains which started out the year with roughly equal desktop and mobile visibility closed out the year with their mobile visibility far below that of desktop. For example, TV.com’s mobile visibility was 41% below its desktop visibility by the end of 2017, while perezhilton.com’s mobile visibility was 42% lower than desktop, and allmusic.com was 43% lower.
Without going behind the scenes at Google’s search index, it’s hard to know exactly what the cause could be. TV.com decidedly fails Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test, but perezhilton.com and allmusic.com both pass. Because Searchmetrics is measuring organic search visibility, these drops may not be due to a lower SERP ranking, but could be due to the websites not appearing for as many search queries on mobile.
What isn’t surprising is that in 2017, we began to see much bigger differences between the way search behaves on mobile and the way it behaves on desktop. Back in August, we looked at the results of a BrightEdge study which found that 79% of all keywords ranked differently in mobile search compared to desktop.
At the time, we speculated that this was due to tests on Google’s part to prepare for the upcoming mobile-first index. Just two months later, Google’s Gary Illyes announced at SMX East that the mobile-first index had in fact already begun rolling out, albeit very slowly.
2017 was the year that we truly started to see mobile search on Google diverge from desktop, and in 2018 we’ve already had confirmation of a major upcoming change to Google’s mobile algorithm in July, after which point page speed will officially be a ranking factor on mobile. So to say that mobile and desktop search results will continue to diverge further in 2018 seems like a very safe prediction to make.
So long, social media?
Possibly the most curious change in fortune between 2016 and 2017 was seen with social media websites, which were among some of the biggest winners in 2016 and some of the biggest losers in 2017.
Visual social network Pinterest went from being the second-biggest ‘winner’ in terms of absolute search visibility in 2016 to suffering a 23% visibility loss in 2017. Similarly, discussion forum Reddit saw a 54% drop in visibility in 2017 after having been the 8th biggest ‘winner’ in 2016.
Tumblr and Myspace also experienced significant losses, and while Facebook and Twitter (#3 and #6 in 2016, respectively) weren’t among the “losers” highlighted by Searchmetrics in 2017, they also appeared nowhere in the list of “winners”.
It’s hard to say exactly why this would be. In last year’s study, Searchmetrics attributed Pinterest’s huge gains in visibility to its “application of deep-learning techniques” to understand user intent, “thereby generating more loyalty and stickiness online”. Whether Pinterest has slowed its progress on this front, or whether other shifts in Google’s index have caused its visibility to suffer, is unknown.
Reddit, meanwhile, appears to have suffered at the hands of Google’s “Phantom V” update, with visibility dropping off sharply at the beginning of 2017. Its mobile visibility was particularly low going in to 2017, which Searchmetrics tentatively attributes to technical issues with the mobile version of its website.
Reddit’s visibility drops off as Phantom V hits in February 2017
It could be that the losses in visibility suffered by social media websites in 2017 are due to differing circumstances and not part of a wider trend, but it’s an interesting coincidence nonetheless.
What can we learn from the “winners” and “losers” of 2017?
Many of the changes of fortune experienced by websites in 2017 were the result of a specific Google update. Phantom V was spotted in the SERPs in mid-February, sending a number of brands’ domains yo-yoing up and down. Google Fred hit not long afterwards, affecting ad-heavy websites with low-quality content and poor link profiles.
Another key change of note is the User Localization Update of October 2017, in which Google started showing search results based on users’ physical location regardless of the Top-Level Domain (.com, .co.uk, .fr) they might be using to search – a big development for local SEO.
Individual updates aside, however, there are a few key points that we can take away from 2017’s Winners and Losers Report:
High-quality content continues to be king, along with content that perfectly serves the user intent.
Brands continue to do well targeting a specific content niche – as exemplified by About.com, the old content network from the late 90s. It recently relaunched as “Dotdash”, an umbrella brand spanning six different niche verticals – several of which are already making great headway in search.
About.com is reborn as five (now six) different niche websites, which quickly begin to climb in search
If you’re targeting short-tail keywords with ambiguous user intent (like “beauty”), be aware that your consumers might now be seeing reference websites appear much higher up in the search results than before – so you may have better chances of ranking for longer-tail, more specific keywords.
Mobile, mobile, mobile – 2018 will be the year that mobile and desktop search truly diverge, so make sure you’re on top of your optimization for both.

1-100 please! And have a good day! :)
Holy CRAP! THANK YOU! Seriously, you can PM me your url if you want some asks sent your way! You’re too kind :)
1. Is a kiss considered cheating? Yeah, I think so. I’m pretty much uncomfortable with hand-holding or long hugs/cuddly with anyone but my SO. I’ve tolerated it before for friends who are going through stuff, but I really enjoy personal space. I would be pretty uncomfortable if Marty did anything cuddly with someone else, too. Kissing is pretty over-the-line for me.
2. Have you ever faked an orgasm? Hasn’t everyone? Yes, I have.
3. If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Deafness at will?Like the ability to create total silence. I get overwhelmed pretty easily, and I hate a lot of noises, so it’d be nice to shut it out sometimes!
4. Do you think you are going to be rich in 7-8-9 years? Absolutely not!
5. Tell us some funny drunk story. I don’t drink, sorry!
6. Why are you no longer together with your ex? He was a douche and was only interested in me for sex. Which was super gross because he was a lot older than me.

I don’t think there’s a man in the sky who knows everything. I think God is a limited entity that exists in the interactions between people? Like... I don’t know. God is the forgiveness between two people for the initial awkwardness of conversation. God is the need for letting grudges go quickly out of personal growth, not out of charity for the other person. God is the overwhelming sense of calmness we get when we’re out in the quiet of nature. God is the ever-expanding universe getting to know itself, if that makes sense? I dunno. I’m still a little embarrassed about religion, but I really like to explore it in writing lmao.

96. Share your favorite quote. As a word person, I have a lot of favorite quotes, but right now it is the following: “Some beekeepers recommend continuous feeding of all hives in the springtime, arguing that a steady supply of sugar syrup tricks the colony into believing there is nectar flow in progress, which stimulates the queen to lay a greater number of eggs than she normally would. I have tried it but find it unsatisfactory, and have concluded that it is impossible to trick bees. They know their world better than I do.” -Sue Hubbell. 101. Can you keep a secret? I feel like I misnumbered these somehow. Also, some of these are repeats, so fuck it. I’m doing 101. Yes, I can keep a secret, but not from Marty. Thankfully, Marty can also keep a secret.
