“Who’s there?!” Zero leapt to her feet at the knock on her door, scythe ready.

“It’s...It’s me, Fjola. Can I come in?”

“...Yes.”

“I’m sorry to bother you so late into the night, but I...” Fjola paused for a moment. “I thought...maybe you’d like to meet her? Properly, I mean.”

“...I see. Well, it’s your aether. You’re free to spend it as you wish.”

“A moment, then,” Fjola closed her eyes and focused. By now, reaching out had become as easy as breathing to her. “...Come!”

“Ah,” The voidsent materialized behind her immediately, as if it had been waiting and listening there the whole time. “So this is the one called Zero. A pleasure to meet you.”

“I’ve been calling her Nebula, but much like you, she insists the name is pointless,” Fjola laughed. “So...Nebula, Zero. Zero, Nebula.”

Zero eyed the pair of them up and down for a while. Nebula was no run-of-the-mill voidsent, quite powerful by all means. She found it hard to believe such a being even needed a host.

“...Well, we have met. What now?”

“Oh, uh...if you have any questions for her, you are free to ask. And if you insist upon...payment, you can give it to Nebula directly.”

“Quite.”

“...All right, then,” Zero thought for a moment. “Earlier, in the Void. I could already sense you had a pact, but I’ll ask directly from you now: what are you to her? Just a pawn, or...?”

“A pawn...” Nebula laughed softly and placed her clawed hand on Fjola’s shoulder. “No. Nothing like that. We are bound because I wanted to learn more of this world. I give my power and through herself, she gives me the world.”

“We are allies. Equals. ...Friends.”

“...Friends...” Zero sighed and shook her head. “The word becomes more confusing with each passing hour.”

“You will understand, eventually.”
