#A lot of my family works in the arts in various capacities
Text
I find it really really funny that most people's families are like "Don't you DARE go into the arts, that's not a REAL career!" But for years my family has been like "Have you considered a career in the arts??? Please? Please monetize your art?" while I very much just want to do it as a hobby.
Anyway, the first book I've ever illustrated is dropping later this year, so that's fun

I’ve shared about my Welcome Home au on Discord and TikTok, but not here yet
So, I introduce to you: the Wish Maker au!💫
A Welcome Home au of mine that spawned from a meme I thought of one time while I was in the shower. Essentially the WH crew in this au are able to grant different kinds of wishes, and strive to make any and all wishes come true for a more better earth
(Please note that I did each of these art pieces separately, so all the canon sizes are the ones up on this first one⬆️)
Tumblr media
First of all, we have our Wally variant: Wally Starling💫
Wally is the newest neighbor to land on Planet Home, as he was recently born from the stardust of a recently died supernova. Wally is gifted the power to grant star wishes as well as a high/moon jump, and aspires to be Judy’s as great of a wish maker as his friends
Tumblr media
Up next: Our spectacular star, Sally Starlet⭐️
Glowing wherever she goes, Sally Starlet is the leader and protector of Planet Home. Legends as true as wishes have told that a portion of Sally’s power was distributed among each of her friends. Who knows what power she could behold at full capacity?
Tumblr media
Next on our list: Our lovable dog Barnaby B. Beagle🎤
It might not seem like it at first, but Barnaby B. Beagle is a dog of many cultures. Barnaby grew a swift and tight friendship with Wally Starling, even being the one who gave Wally his name when he first arrived on Planet Home! Inspired by 90s family game shows as a sign of his love for fun and friendship, Barnaby grants the wishes from different cultures (such as tanabata tags, and grapes from under the table on the new years countdown)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up, our dynamic duo: 🎂Julie Joyful and Frank Frankly📚
Always excited to celebrate any occasion, Julie is your girl to call for a party. Her partying expertise is always to serve for others happiness. With help from Poppy Partridge and Sally Starlet, there’s no party on Planet Home that won’t be ready on time. Once the birthday candles are blown, a dash of confetti from Julie’s hand will have the wish granted in no time
Although they’re always in a rush, Frank Frankly is the brightest/smartest neighbor on the wishful Planet Home. Any questions the neighbors have about anything, Frank is able to answer in various ways. His specialty lies in granted wishes found in nature (such as dandelion puffs or the first winter snow), as well as proofreading wishes to the wisher’s intent. With provided help from Julie Joyful and Eddie Dear, there’s no task to tough for our beloved brainiac
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And last up: 🌙Poppy Partridge, Eddie Dear💌, and Howdy Pillar🐛
Looking over the dreams of those down on Earth, Poppy Partridge acts as a guide to those who don’t know what their hearts desire. A scent of lavender and lilac follow wherever she goes, as a sea of stars speckle her pillowy soft tail feathers. Her and Sally Starlet happily work side by side, making sure all goes right from day to night
Folk tales from the old west tell the tale of a person who retrieves the wishes that haven’t been granted so that they can be granted as soon as they can. That there is our confident yet clumsy and forgetful dreamer, Eddie Dear. With his Lasso of Limitless Length and Star of Time, there’s no limit to when and where ungranted wishes will be granted. He takes his job with pride, especially if Frank Frankly is by his side
Ever need that little bit of push when playing the lottery? Or need a wish from that coin you tossed into the well? Well, our terribly generous Howdy Pillar’s got your back. He’d be more than happy to grant you luck and fortune for whatever you might need for the day. He does seem to fall asleep quite often, even with all the energy he needs for the day, so he carries his pillow Benjamin in case he’s ever tuckered out (get it? Cause money…$100…Benjamin Franklin-). So, what Howdy’s Place deal are you looking for today?
JESUS OK FINALLY FINISHED WRITING ALL THIS😭
But yeah, I have a lot to share with you guys about this au, and I hope you all enjoy and stick around for all the stuff I wanna share for it! I even have a whole playlist for this au (as well as a discord server but that was made for the fun of it and doesn’t have any actual functionality lol)

I would also love to hear some of your headcanons for Alfred and Alexia. Only if you want, of course.
My headcanons are related to the fanfic I am currently writing, so none of them are directly related to the videogame and its canon.
Anyway, here are some of the headcanons I am working on (subject to change), from childhood to adulthood.
Alexia Ashford
Her family nickname is "Lexia". She hates her name being confused with Alexandra and its diminutives (Alexia is the feminine form of Alexis, not Alexander).
His greatest passion (and obsession) is literature. He reads absolutely everything as a form of escapism or hobby, as well as for study or knowledge. Outside of his studies and work, he reads a lot of contemporary philosophy and enjoys writing essays or non-fiction. Although he also reads a lot of fiction, he does not usually write prose, preferring poetry. Outside of literature, his interests include contemporary independent music (the more niche and quirky, the better) and cinema, which he watches with his brother, with the exception of a few films that catch his eye because of their subject matter or style. His favourite franchise is Alien because of the xenomorphs (because of their association with ants).
Apart from biology and chemistry, Alexia is interested in computer science, especially artificial intelligence, and music composition with electronic synthesizers. She is also knowledgeable in various disciplines such as physics, anthropology, history, etc. She is a Renaissance woman.
Alexia tends to be introverted and socially conformist so as not to attract attention. Unlike her brother, her personality, hobbies and tastes are straightforwardly unusual, rather than stereotypical, which tends to make her seem odd to those who do not know her.
The origin of their sociopathic tendencies is related to their social isolation, both forced and voluntary, due to their differences in intelligence and personality.
Alexia's genius is based on an accelerated learning capacity, and a highly developed problem-solving and creative ability.
Alfred Ashford
His family nickname is "Alf", like ALF the alien. The nickname was given to him by his maternal grandmother before the series premiered.
He started playing video games at the age of 7, as an escape and a way of overcoming the boredom of loneliness and the absence of his father and sister, who were at university. Alexander gave him the video game E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600 for his thirteenth birthday. As a teenager, his love of video games, especially the explicitly violent ones, would become one of his greatest passions and collections, along with music and film.
He is passionate about both high and pop culture. His favourite artist is David Bowie and his favourite film genres are slasher and snuff. His favourite serial killer is Michael Myers from the Halloween series.
His best and only real friend is his cousin Auguste Campbell, with whom he shares hobbies and sociopathic tendencies.
Alfred tends to be outgoing and socially normative, although his personality, hobbies and tastes are unconventional. He is not shy, but his lack of self-confidence makes him withdrawn and not as decisive as Alexia.
The origin of his sociopathic tendencies is related to the absent father syndrome with Alexander, his own insecurity at being compared to Alexia, and his contrast with Alexia's personality. He resents Alexander's incomprehensible indifference towards him, especially as he knows that Alexander had a very good relationship with his father Edward.
Alfred is gifted, although his talents come from the social sciences, the humanities and the arts. He has a talent for drawing.

Hi, it’s me, Kelso! I’m Usagi30!
Tumblr media
I thought it would be appropriate for my inaugural Tumblr post to be an introduction about myself and my reading journey. 👋
Tumblr media
🐰 some bun facts about me 🐰
I studied fine art and art history in college. I’ve been drawing since I was a year old, and I always loved illustration. In college, I gained a much deeper appreciation for the visual arts, and how art in its various forms reflected the world within and outside the artist.
Massachusetts born, Florida raised. I have a strong connection to my family’s New England traditions and ways, and since leaving Florida, have embraced more of my Southern roots as well.
I moved to Japan in 2019 and work as a graphic designer. I’ve been infatuated with Japan since I was 8, and I got the amazing opportunity to move here three years ago, working in a creative field that I love. Living in a new country that doesn’t speak my mother language has been challenging, but I like to think that I’ve embraced the Japanese way of life with a lot of grace, and I wouldn’t trade living here for anything.
I’m a Nichiren Buddhist. I was exposed to Nichiren Buddhism by one of my best friends when we met in college, but didn’t convert until I was around 25-26.
I have a Harry Potter tattoo on my left shoulder blade (it’s the Deathly Hollows). I got the tattoo because the Harry Potter series one that got me through a childhood full of bullying and feelings of not being understood. As much as I renounce JKR’s transphobic rhetoric and refuse to give her a penny more of my money, the series still holds a dear place in my heart.
Some of my other hobbies include hiking, mobile photography, drawing, traveling, and video games. I also really enjoy cooking (and eating).
Some of my favorites
Book Genres: horror, contemporary fiction, classics, historical fiction, Japanese literature
Book: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Band: BTS (I’m a Joon stan)
Places to go on dates: art museums, botanical gardens, and cafes
Artists: Vincent Van Gogh and Alphonse Mucha
Animals: deers and rabbits
Historical period: The 1840’s - 1930’s
Flowers: sunflowers and moonflowers
Color: pink
Tumblr media
📚 my life as a bibliophile 📚
I’ve basically loved reading my entire life. One of my formative memories was getting my first public library card, and checking out a kid’s version of Dracula.
When I was in elementary school, I discovered Harry Potter and manga, and the doors to reading were blown open for me. I started devouring whatever books looked cool to me in my library, and begged for manga for holidays and birthdays. Even in high school, I always had 1-2 books with me.
But then, college attacked.
Between art project due dates, and being forced to read copious dry books about art history and art theory, I couldn’t bear to pick up a book to read for pleasure, and if I did, one book would take me nearly six months to complete.
After graduation, I didn’t bounce back from my college reading slump. I might’ve read 2-3 books in an entire year.
In 2018, four years after graduation, I started reading books that my boss’s wife would recommend to me and let me borrow. I got my first public library card since I was a kid. There was hope that my desire to read was coming back.
Then in 2019, I started my hectic move to Japan.
Adjusting to a new culture and being away from all my family and friends was a challenge, and I fell into a moderate reading slump again as I tried to make sense of my new life.
Earlier this year, my local library was doing a Blind Date with a Book event for Valentine’s Day, and I excitedly checked out a book that ended up being the first of the Diviners series by Libba Bray.
Tumblr media
My passion for reading suddenly came back again, and I’ve been devouring as many books as I can. This is the first year in almost 5 years that I’ve met my Goodreads reading goal, and the first of my adult life where I’ve exceeded my reading goal!
It’s been a wild journey. But it’s always been with me in some capacity in my life.
I’m excited to share my reading journey from here on out with you as it continues to unfold!
If you want to read my reviews, check out my Instagram.

Being Above Average but of Average Social Standing
The Tao that can be trodden is not the enduring and unchanging Tao. The Tao-Path is not the All-Tao. The Name is not the Thing named. - Laozi, Tao Te Ching
Tumblr media
I know I'm intelligent. I've never done an IQ test, because I believe it's just another unnecessary box people are placed into. But, growing up, I've been told by teachers and other intelligent people that I'm intelligent. I've always thought school was too easy, and was recommended into gifted programs. Everything from Math to English, I was either top of the class or close to the top. And I know I'm intelligent as well. I see it in the way I think and convey my thoughts.
Apart from academic excellence, I also have many talents. My parents were very adamant on making me a "cultured" individual. I was placed into various extracurricular classes ever since I was four or five years old. Dance, visual arts, and vocal lessons were the ones I enjoyed the most, and also the ones that came most naturally to me. I also love to read and write prose and poetry. I grew up performing, and honing these skills. I'm very self-critical (another quality of intelligence), so I would always try to improve. I believe in the capacity of any human being to be able to do what any other human being can do. Of course, there are certain limitations resulting from our genes, but we're still all human beings. If one tries hard enough, the limits are boundless.
I'm also quite good-looking. I've received many compliments, and I'm very confident in my appearance. I also dress well, work out, and take care of myself to maintain my appearance.
And to add on top of all of this, I'm not a boring prude either. I know how to have fun. I'm quite witty, and I love to be silly.
Now, I'm not saying all of this to boast. I'm not perfect, and I'm certainly not the best at everything. I can't play an instrument, sometimes it takes me a while to feel the beat of a song, I don't speak the most eloquently, and I certainly don't have model-like good looks. I'm aware of this. I see when other people are better in these ways. I always compliment people where they deserve to be. I was raised to be modest, humble, and to see the good in others. I'm just very well-rounded, and as a whole above average.
Why does this matter, and why am I speaking on all of this? Well, despite excelling in many ways, I come from a very humble family, finances wise. As a result, my opportunities in life were always limited. Another crutch to this reality is that I'm a first generation immigrant. My parents and I came to Canada in 2007, after I had just completed first grade in China. We came here with very little money, and my parents had to restart their lives. They worked lower middle class or working class jobs to make ends meet. Our connections were limited to people in these sectors of society as well. The focus was always on making more money and climbing up the social ladder. This is why going to a good university, getting a good degree, a good job, and making a lot of money is so important to us. However, it created many problems for my up-bringing.
My family was dysfunctional, the pressure was on me to dig us out of a hole I wasn't a part of digging, and I had very few friends. I had nothing material to show for my excellence. I'm also a female, with quite the baby face. People like to judge. Humans are superficial. And we create expectations of others in our minds out of these incorrect prejudices. When people first look at me, they more often than not think I'll be a weak, demure, and simple girl. They won't expect me to have all the abilities I hold. Whenever there's a disconnect between a person's expectations and realities, discomfort arises. It triggers a fight or flight response, because there's a sense of unfamiliarity and fear. The disconnect I cause in people's minds is probably quite great. People either love me or hate me because of it. All of this meant I had very little support from the people I most wanted support from - my family and my peers. I was intimidating to most people my age, and my family had very little time or money to spare me.
As a result, I've always felt pressured to prove myself. There has always been such a great weight on my shoulders to do anything that would show people just how great I am, and what I can achieve beyond people's expectations of me. Eventually, I became drained. It's not easy when I'm able to see past what's in front of me and onto the bigger picture. I'm constantly helping others, when I lack the most support. I won't lie, some of this I did create for myself, because people just don't stimulate my brain enough, or aren't able to match up to me, and I don't feel comfortable asking those I consider "weaker" than me for help.
At the age of 18, I began losing my mind to it all. I had very little friends - if any I considered close, I wasn't doing what I wanted, and I became depressed. I had just gotten into university, but it quickly dawned on me that this wasn't what I wanted at all. I was doing all of this in search of something that was in actuality meaningless to me. I don't care about money or status. All I want is to live a simple life, and let the days pass me by stress-free. I transferred out of several university programs, dropped out completely, and went to college instead. It made me feel incredibly insecure. Now I had absolutely nothing to show for who I am on the inside. I was back at square one. It felt like my life was starting over. This feeling only brought me down more. I felt like a failure, and I began to lose my way.
Today, I'm settling back into who I am. I don't have to prove anything to anyone. The future seems incredibly uncertain, but there's one thing I'm incredibly certain of -  who I am and my value. I'm incredibly valuable. It sucks that most people just won't ever see that. But, I have accepted it for what it is. Society is made for the average person, and those who are on par with me will see me for all that I am. I just have to continue to be my best self, and hope for a future where I'm not taken for granted. Results are what matter, not the journey.
If you are average, I'm telling you to be grateful for being average. It's the luckiest thing a person can be in this society. However, I won't ever dumb myself down to fit in. The results will be shown in my satisfaction with life, and self-actualization (a little Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs reference to end this off).
Best to everyone.
Love, Chenchen ♡

“I Am YEG Arts” Series: Rayanne Haines
Tumblr media
Sometimes, you don’t know where you belong until you get there. For Rayanne Haines, that’s meant showing up, doing the work, and sharing what she’s learned and questioned. It’s meant writing. And has she ever! In addition to being a best-selling author of three poetry collections and a four-part urban/fantasy series, Haines is the 2022 Writer in Residence for the Metro Edmonton Federation of Libraries, VP for the League of Canadian Poets, and host of her own literary podcast. By the looks of her next project, she’s also just getting started. Educator, hybrid author, and contemptuous doomscroller—this week’s “I Am YEG Arts” story belongs to Rayanne Haines.
Tell us about your connection to Edmonton and why you’ve made it your home.
I was born and raised on an Arabian horse farm about half-an-hour outside of Edmonton. My family still has their farm there, so I feel like I’m an Edmontonian-lifer. After leaving home and looking to find my way, I moved into the city to go to MacEwan University and have worked in various arts organizations throughout Edmonton over the past twenty-odd years. So It's always been my home, and it probably always will be.
How did your love of writing begin? Were you always a storyteller, or was it a “detour” while on a path to somewhere else?
I think that I was always a storyteller but didn’t know it until I grew older. I have, for example, very vivid memories of telling stories to my parents’ horses. So rather than being really serious about practicing for horse shows, I’d go out into the back forty and make up stories and plays with my horses.
For the longest time, I actually thought I was going to be an actress or involved in theatre—and then I ended up working in the music industry as a detour. So it took me a long time to find my way to understanding that, for me, the stories behind the music and embedded in the theatre were what I was most interested in, and I wanted to be the person writing those stories and performing pieces that I’d created. So, yes, it was always there. It just took me the longest time to understand that that’s what it meant to me to be a storyteller—to be the one writing the story.
What themes are you drawn to as a storyteller?
I’m really drawn to the lived experience of women and women-indentifying people. I’m drawn to the stories of lived experience and the narratives that we women inhabit in this society that we live in. I’m also drawn to interrogating mental health within my work and looking at connections between mental health and womanhood and the empowerment that comes along with understanding or navigating those questions.
What is it about poetry that makes it your starting point for other forms of writing?
I think that poetry, for me, lets me put limits around the chaos—and not limits in the way of limiting what we’re sharing—rather, it allows me to use structure, and form, and shape, and what we visually see on the page as much as the language that we use. And I like that about it. It allows me from these places of chaotic discoveries around mental health or these really massive conversations surrounding women's identities or queer identity to use the form of poetry to shape those ideas to further question what it is that I’m asking amongst those ideas. That capacity to use poetry to shape has actually allowed me more freedom in the questions that I’m asking—and it took me a lot longer to understand how to do the same thing within an essay form or a fiction form.
I also think that because so much of my work is personal, poetry lets me come at it from a lens that respects that personal nature and allows me to shape-shift what I want to say or question, based on how I go about putting it on the page or using my line breaks. Sometimes I can create dual or triple meaning around something just by the way I choose to shape it on the page. So there’s a lot of freedom that is offered in poetry, while also having these capacities for playing with form.
Tumblr media
What’s been the biggest surprise lesson you’ve learned hosting your literary podcast, Crow Reads?
I think the biggest surprise for me—as a woman who talks often about the importance of inclusion, and representation, and decolonizing—was realizing just how white my lens has been. Coming from this place of being a good ally, because of the work I’m doing with that podcast and all of the diverse people that I speak with, has really highlighted that lived experience from that white lens and increased my desire or capacity to want to try to decolonize my view and to learn and question that as much as possible.
What role have awards and funding played in your career? And what doors do they open for artists?
That’s such a good question. I think that funding support has been huge for the advancement of my career. The validity that receiving a grant offers you as an artist is massive because what it tells you is that a group of people believe in the power of what you’re doing before it’s a done thing. They believe in the idea, they believe in you, and they believe in supporting your work—before it is finished. The legitimacy that that gives you as an artist is incredible because it acknowledges the work that you’re doing as having merit and importance to your peers.
That being said, I also have a bit of a love-hate relationship with it because it’s a competitive thing that we get forced into in order to be able to create. So I wish we lived in a world in which we didn’t have to rely on grants or compete against each other to do our work and receive funding. I certainly think that winning awards does shift things for you as an artist, but more than that it acknowledges the work around your craft. Speaking from a literary world, being able to look back at these awards tells me that I’ve done the work to elevate my craft to such a point that it is acknowledged by other writers or experts in the field. And for me, that’s been huge because it allows me to see myself differently—to get away from the imposter syndrome that all of us artists live with. It lets me step beyond that imposter syndrome to say that I do have value to offer others and to then go back to my community and offer that support, knowing I’ve done the work to have my artform seen in that capacity.
Tumblr media
Tell us a little about the non-fiction collection of essays and poetry you’re working on.
The idea behind the collection is that I really wanted to pull away from form and create a hybrid text because I’m looking at the in between spaces that women inhabit when we don’t know who we are, or are questioning our identity, or our capacities around grief. My mother was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago at the beginning of the pandemic, and we were told it was not a cancer she would beat. She has now passed, so I think the genesis for the collection came from who I am now as a grown woman who needs to grieve my mother but is not allowed to grieve my mother because my mother is not dead—even though I know. So I am in this in between space. The in between space of motherhood and aging—as an aging woman, what does that look like? The in between space of academia. The in between space of my own identity—questioning my identity when I have conversations around queer identity or bisexual identity and what that means as an aging woman. All of these spaces that we inhabit or are trying to understand how we inhabit come with a lot of chaos and questioning. So the idea behind the collection was to work within that chaos and interrogate those questions in many different forms and many different spaces.
What’s your favourite way to procrastinate?
It’s a horrible way to procrastinate, and it’s social media. I’m a doomscroller. It’s not cooking, it’s not cleaning—it’s none of that. Just scrolling through the crap. I have a good friend who puts timers on her phone and locks it all up, but I can’t quite get there.
What does community mean to you, and where do you find it?
Community to me means the support of people who care about you and that you care about—both in terms of human connection and your artistry. I think I came to the arts community as a single mother trying to figure out my place in the world, and this city and community lifted me up, and held me, and helped me find my way. So, for me, that’s what it’s about—service, and supporting others, and the work you can give back in order to build a stronger community.
Where do I find it? I think I find it by showing up—and not just physically—but by showing up when someone is looking for support, or asking for guidance, or even an ear to talk to. That’s going to look different for everyone and every art community, but certainly in Edmonton and around the literary world, it means showing up for new writers and being someone who can offer supports or mentorship in a way that feels healthy, while also placing boundaries on our time and what we can give. So, for me, at the end of the day, community means showing up, doing the work, and lifting people up on their journeys.
