La regione africana del Sahel, che si estende su diversi Paesi tra cui Burkina Faso, Ciad, Niger e Mali, è attualmente uno dei principali punti critici del mondo. Gli estremisti islamici operano terrorizzando e affamando la popolazione, mentre le autorità civili sembrano aver perso il controllo di gran parte della regione. Dopo dieci anni di presenza militare, le forze occidentali si ritirano progressivamente a causa della loro incapacità di risolvere il problema, lasciandosi alle spalle centinaia di migliaia di sfollati interni in cerca di una nuova casa, fame e rovine. Pur fronteggiando la distruzione e la chiusura forzata di strutture ecclesiastiche, come ospedali e scuole, la Chiesa locale resta l'unica istituzione che aiuta queste persone improvvisamente diventate indigenti. Ecco perché nelle ultime settimane Aiuto alla Chiesa che Soffre ha intensificato i suoi aiuti in particolare al Burkina Faso. Gran parte di questa assistenza, consistente in forniture alimentari e medicinali di emergenza, va a beneficio dei cristiani fuggiti dal terrorismo. Un ulteriore obiettivo degli aiuti, attraverso la costruzione di aule e il sostenimento delle spese scolastiche, è quello di consentire ai figli delle famiglie sfollate di continuare il loro percorso formativo. Più di 340 cristiani di Débé, ad esempio, alla fine dell'anno scorso hanno ricevuto un ultimatum dai terroristi affinché lasciassero il loro villaggio. Oltre a tutti loro, a ricevere gli aiuti di emergenza sono anche le 60 famiglie che hanno accolto le vittime nonostante la loro povertà. Mons. Prosper Ky, della diocesi di Dédougou, descrive la situazione ad ACS: «È davvero angosciante vedere gli sfollati interni con tutti i loro beni vagare per le strade alla ricerca di un posto dove stare.
