La regione africana del Sahel, che si estende su diversi Paesi tra cui Burkina Faso, Ciad, Niger e Mali, è attualmente uno dei principali punti critici del mondo. Gli estremisti islamici operano terrorizzando e affamando la popolazione, mentre le autorità civili sembrano aver perso il controllo di gran parte della regione. Dopo dieci anni di presenza militare, le forze occidentali si ritirano progressivamente a causa della loro incapacità di risolvere il problema, lasciandosi alle spalle centinaia di migliaia di sfollati interni in cerca di una nuova casa, fame e rovine.
Pur fronteggiando la distruzione e la chiusura forzata di strutture ecclesiastiche, come ospedali e scuole, la Chiesa locale resta l'unica istituzione che aiuta queste persone improvvisamente diventate indigenti. Ecco perché nelle ultime settimane Aiuto alla Chiesa che Soffre ha intensificato i suoi aiuti in particolare al Burkina Faso. Gran parte di questa assistenza, consistente in forniture alimentari e medicinali di emergenza, va a beneficio dei cristiani fuggiti dal terrorismo. Un ulteriore obiettivo degli aiuti, attraverso la costruzione di aule e il sostenimento delle spese scolastiche, è quello di consentire ai figli delle famiglie sfollate di continuare il loro percorso formativo.
Più di 340 cristiani di Débé, ad esempio, alla fine dell'anno scorso hanno ricevuto un ultimatum dai terroristi affinché lasciassero il loro villaggio. Oltre a tutti loro, a ricevere gli aiuti di emergenza sono anche le 60 famiglie che hanno accolto le vittime nonostante la loro povertà. Mons. Prosper Ky, della diocesi di Dédougou, descrive la situazione ad ACS: «È davvero angosciante vedere gli sfollati interni con tutti i loro beni vagare per le strade alla ricerca di un posto dove stare. Nella mia diocesi ce ne sono centinaia di migliaia. La maggior parte sono donne e bambini».
Un altro degli sfollati dai jihadisti, che condivide la stessa sorte di 900 cristiani, è Padre Etienne Sawadogo, parroco di Rollo, nel nord del Burkina Faso, il quale sottolinea l'importanza degli aiuti d'emergenza sotto forma di cibo e medicinali: «Come possono le persone vivere una vita cristiana quando sono costantemente affamate? ».
Nonostante la situazione precaria del Paese, che dal 2015 va peggiorando di anno in anno a causa delle violenze estremistiche, la Chiesa in Burkina Faso è viva e ha molte vocazioni. Per fare un esempio, nella diocesi di Koupela, che si trova in una regione dove gli scontri tra forze di sicurezza e terroristi sono all'ordine del giorno, il seminario sta attualmente formando 67 giovani candidati. Poiché molte famiglie non sono più in grado di contribuire economicamente alla formazione dei propri figli, ACS sostiene i seminaristi pagando le spese di studio e di viaggio, nonché le spese mediche.
Aiuto alla Chiesa che Soffre cerca anche di rafforzare la fede e la speranza di coloro che sono sfollati. Padre Etienne Sawadogo spiega: «Vogliamo aiutare i cristiani di Rollo, i quali hanno perso tutto, a interpretare gli eventi e i segni dei tempi alla luce delle Scritture». Il lavoro pastorale è sostenuto da una serie di iniziative, tra cui la fornitura di Bibbie, per dare alle persone una comprensione più profonda della propria fede e promuovere una vita di preghiera.
Nonostante la persecuzione, in Burkina Faso sono molti i musulmani convertiti al cristianesimo. La diocesi desidera aiutare soprattutto questi credenti a conoscere meglio la loro fede e a crescere in essa: «Non basta che i convertiti ricevano il battesimo e la santa comunione», afferma il ministro diocesano della Gioventù Romuald Fuambu Nsanyi, «è nostro compito aiutarli a crescere e a diventare buoni cristiani».
Nella diocesi di Kaya, anch'essa situata nel nord del Paese, ACS sta finanziando la costruzione di un centro pastorale diocesano per garantire il benessere spirituale sia dei soldati che proteggono la popolazione, sia dei giovani e degli studenti.
Nel 2023, ACS ha sostenuto 56 progetti in Burkina Faso con più di un milione di euro di fondi. Oltre a ciò, in Ciad, Mali e Niger, ACS ha fornito un aiuto totale per quasi un milione di euro in aiuti di emergenza, offerte per le Messe, formazione dei seminaristi, auto e moto per l'attività pastorale di sacerdoti e religiose....
