NOTES AND DISCLAIMERSSS!!
Hihiii <3
Rev here with a few key details and notes before i start writing the first chapter
-You and april work at (and get fired from lol) the same places. Typically because when one of you gets fired, the other quits right after. If april gets fired, you quit. April is really the only person you can tolerate at your work place. Shit’s bound to hit the fan if she’s not there to ground you and calm you down.
If you get fired, april will quit. For moral support lol
-You and her are also roommates! Your best friend as well as your partner in crime. Hence why you two are inseparable majority of the time
-some chapters will be based off of episodes from ROTTMNT, but the introduction of every chapter will be similar to the intro of each episode of Aggretsuko.
-THERE WILL BE NO SHIPPING!! SORRYYYYYY! You will be interacting with all 4 turtles soooo it’d be kinda hard to ship you with 1/all 4. Butttttt when this series gets finished, i can write a spin off for each turtles (and april if you’d like)
THATS ALL! NOW IM OFF TO GO WRITE

Aggretsuko Tac Fraud Arc Rewrite III: The One That Isn’t Just A Screenshot of My Reddit Post
Hold onto yer buttcheeks, walls of text incoming.
As many of us are aware, the Tax Fraud Arc is one of, if not the most disliked Arcs in the entire show. It makes Haida look stupid, Himuro becomes a one-dimensional villain, and the finale has less impact as the time I complained about Overwatch being inferior to TF2 on a public chat room for a mobile game.
Here's how I would rewrite it:
1. Himuro gets more development. This is the arc that solidifies Himuro as a villain in the series, showing his lack of morals and egotism, both of which were things we already knew.
No attempts are made to give Himuro any more characterization, if anything he becomes less interesting as the arc progresses, going from a morally ambiguous CEO to Evul Capitalist Guy TM. His fate after being hospitalized is left unknown, all we know is that he was demoted and that he quit Carrier Man Trading. My proposal: make this Haida AND Himuro's arc. Dedicate one episode to Himuro and fill his backstory (preferably early in the arc to avoid disrupting the narrative flow). Two possible options I thought of are: A. Himuro is a nihilist who's been jaded by years of dealing with corruption in the company, or B. Himuro is a fraud with Imposter Syndrome who only got this position out of nepotism (i.e. family are large shareholders, sexual favors, or he's just good at Talk-No-Jutsu). His bond with Haida could be used as a way to explore these issues, and gradually help Himuro move past them. Over the course of the arc, Himuro slowly warms up to Haida, and starts being more open about his struggles. When the window dressing is uncovered, Himuro takes the blame for it, but is only demoted, since the board of directors want to avoid any possible scandals (as far as the media know, Himuro stepped down due his lack of experience).
Himuro chooses to climb up the corporate ladder the right way, to re-earn his position.
2. Raise the stakes. Self-explanatory. The window dressing is done for seemingly no reason besides making Carrier Man Trading #1. Solution: have the company be nearing bankruptcy due to corruption(explaining Himuro's lack or morality) and poor sales. Now the tax fraud feels less like a random obstacle and more like an unfortunately necessary evil. This leads us to-
3. The plan is Haida's idea. Alright lemme explain. As we all know at this point, Haida's decision making skills are... subpar at best. Having Haida agree to committing tax fraud because a hot guy complimented him is more or less par for the course at this point. So have it been Haida's idea. Haida has spent most of season 4 becoming Himuro's right hand man and feels a degree of devotion to him. After realizing that the company's stocks are still dropping, despite their best efforts, Haida has an idea: tax fraud, just bumping up a few numbers until things even out. Himuro is hesitant at first, he's strategies until now have been within the law (more or less), but eventually agrees. When Retsuko confronts Haida, and after so much stress he breaks down and-
4. Fear of Failure. Haida is motivated fear, specifically fear failing those who trust him.
Friends, family, lovers, anyone who Haida feels puts faith him, he fears disappointing them.
Every time he feels as though he can fix something, he scrambles to solve the problem as quickly as possible, usually to disastrous results (i.e. the karaoke incident). And finding himself in a position where he could he help those he cares about by sacrificing his morals, he picked the fastest (and worst) option. As for who Haida is feels trusts him the most right now-
5. Haidmuro is canon now LOL. This is the part where I get stupid, so bear with me. As I've been stating before in the previous points, the bond between Himuro and Haida is the driving force in the later events in season 4 and the main catalyst for both of their character arcs. And what is the thing almost everyone dislikes about Haida: his simping for Retsuko.
After the Dating Arc, RetHaida is no longer an option. It starts with Haida venting to Himuro, grows into a shared bond over their issues with pleasing others (Haida's failures at romance and Himuro's struggles with leadership). They gradually grow closer as time goes on, Haida gain someone who supports him and Himuro gets someone he legitimately trusts. After the tax fraud is revealed and Himuro takes the blame, Haida quits. He feels as though he's burnt too many bridges and he's just going to make things worse by sticking around. The season ends at the bar, Haida's contemplating his life choices and looking for a new job. Eventually, someone sits down next to him: Himuro. After some awkward apologies, Haida makes a confession: he's fallen in love with Himuro. Himuro tells him the feeling is mutual. They decide that they've both screwed up, but they're still going to get up and face life together.
First kiss, credits roll, and I get arrested for crimes against literarcy.

woahh i have some thoughts about this season
woww this new season of aggretsuko was so many things and i have so many thoughts. so this is gonna be a bit discombobulated because i don’t have the energy to write a cohesive review but wanted to share. So... The beginning of this season cut deep and I related so hard to Haida’s struggle. Aggretsuko has always had this knack in relatable and this has remained true ever since I watched the first episode. While, I felt that Haida and Retsuko being together felt a bit forced at the end of season 3, it’s really seeing them work as a couple. Yeah, sometimes they feel a bit boring when you compare Retsuko’s romance with Tadano, but they feel stable and like they get each other. It’s nice and feels easy, even if the relationship isn’t always easy.  It was also great to see some Haida development and his family (yikes, they’re assholes, no wonder Haida struggle to feel like he’s important when you have family like that).
I also rewatched some early episodes and it’s so interesting to see how Retsuko has grown throughout the series. She mentions after meeting Haida’s family that she wanted to give death voice but she didn’t want to get upset over stupid stuff anymore. I compared this with one of the early scenes where Retsuko is in a shop and the employee won’t stop pestering her. She lets out her rage voice (at least internally) and its hilarious but really shows how different she is in the 5th season. She doesn’t really rage overing annoying inconveniences anymore, nor does she have that dissatisfied outlook over her life anymore. Now that I think about it, most of the action in the early seasons take place in her office, but in the fifth season, we mostly see her outside of her job - in the home, with Haida, with friends, etc. She’s found a groove in her life and she’s more confident and sure of herself. (I’m jealous, like get me to this level lol).  Another thing, her friends. She has so many people rooting her on. In episode 1, Kabae is annoying the shit out of her and she holds people at arms length. Even her closest friends, Gori and Washimi, had to worm their way into friendship. But in season 5, Kabae and Anai (someone Retsuko didn’t get along with at first) are scoping out the diner to make sure Haida isn’t cheating on her. Even Ton! Who starts out as a shitty boss but becomes this sort of mentor figure that isn’t afraid to tell Retsuko that hard truth when it’s needed and supports her. Seeing the growth for all these characters is just so amazing and this show is definitely one of my favorite shows. Now despite that, the end of season 5 felt a little….like a jumbled mess. I still enjoyed it a lot but I wasn’t really sure where things were going. I feel like Retsuko’s little stint in politics was kind of odd. They even made a meta reference to it where all these insane things happen to Retsuko for the audience’s entertainment. Regardless, I’m not really what it bought to the show or added  to her development. It even felt like it regressed it a bit. When they were suckering her into running for political office, I kept wondering when she would just say no, death metal style. But she didn’t. She let herself get pushed into it and personally didn’t understand why her friends thought it was a good idea. It would be one thing if Retsuko had thoughts or feelings about the system, or even was personally victimized by it. But she was kinda lukewarm about the whole thing. And I’m guessing that’s why they had her lose. Which I’m glad she did. But again, what was the point? However, the show’s small exploration of homelessness and people at the “bottom” of the system was very interesting but also a bit disappointing. In the beginning of Season 5, we see Haida staying at a net cafe and he quickly becomes part of that community. Everyone is going through it and has their own issues and burdens, but people help each other out and it was great to see that kind of communal bond. They helped Haida gain some direction more than his family ever did. And I’m glad Haida tried to stick up for them. Unfortunately, this part of the story didn’t really go anywhere. I think they were trying to make Retsuko this inspirational figure for people frustrated with the current system (and that is so relevant right now). But again, she was lukewarm. She didn’t really have passion for what she doing, just going along with what people wanted from her. It was just another crazy adventure for her to go through when we’re shown that there are people going though some hard, hard struggles (like Shikibane and the dog dude). And I’m not really sure what Retsuko’s death metal duet with Shikibane was supposed to achieve. I’m guessing to inspire her but It didn’t have the impact that it meant to.  We don’t know much about Shikibane and a lot of her struggle are left unsaid, so maybe that’s why it’s hard to understand this part of the show. But overall, I feel like this part of the story didn’t go deep enough. Some other dislikes; Haida and Retsuko getting married? Like they’re a good couple but not that good where the show can just rush through signing marriage certificates in a death metal montage. Idk, I feel kind of whatever about it. Like I’m not, “omg this is so fucking stupid why would they do that” but I’m also not excited or goo goo ga ga over it. They’re just ok and I feel like there’s a lot more to say about this, but to go over their whole relationship would be too long at least for this post. Finally, one of the last thoughts I had which isn’t really a criticism but I noticed there was less Washimi and Gori this season. Which at first made me sad because I love them and I love their friendship with Retsuko. But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. As you get older and  busier, it can be hard to meet up with friends on the regular. Retsuko is busy with Haida and politics. However, despite being busy, she maintains that friendship with them. She can’t meet with them all the time, every so often they get together. She continues to nurture that friendship. And that’s real. Because it can be hard when we don’t see our friends as often anymore. but you know the love is still there when you put in the effort anyway. Even if it’s once every few months. And gori and washimi continue to support her, even if it’s from far away. Also last thing, but when Tadano was with Washimi and Gori, looking at Retsuko. Ughhhh it made me so sad. Because it’s so obvious he still loves her but despite his feelings. He’s in her and Haida’s corner. He’s too good for this world. And I know some people say that she should have stayed with Tadano. But I understand that they wanted different things and that’s ok. So I hope Tadano will one day get what he deserves as well. That was way more than I thought I would write but I enjoyed the season overall and I think this is the last season so I’m sad lol but will definitely rewatch and probably have more thoughts to share.

Since adults are the topic of the hour, I want to know which adult animations are your favourite. I know, not in topic with your blog, but I'm really curious!
Well, to maintain this blog's tradition, in the Magical Girl department, there are only three adult series that I liked:
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (basically, Japan making fun of the US and its gross western animation, with its own unique twist. Was supposed to have a second season, but the folks at Gainax couldn't keep their promise);
Bee & PuppyCat (if you ignore the lack of plot coherence and handle Toast's annoying antics, it should be fine for you to watch, I guess);
Super Drags (this one's brazilian! Yeah, it's rather crude and generic as an adult show, but it has some interesting queer topics to check out!)
Now, for the non-Magical Girl ones:
Inside Job (if you're depressed after seeing Velma's rendition of Fred Jones, Brett Hand will serve as a great palate cleanser for you);
Bojack Horseman (it starts off weird, but it solidifies as the time goes on and it gets quite philosophical, too);
Aggretsuko (yes, the one from Sanrio. Y'know, the kawaii empire behind Hello Kitty? Yeah, that's the one);
Tuca & Bertie (from the folks that have brought you Bojack Horseman);
The fifth and final season of Samurai Jack (the finale sucked, but the video game, Battle Through Time, has acted as damage control);
Harley Quinn (Velma tried to imitate this one, and failed so hard at it);
The earliest seasons of Rick & Morty (Seasons 1-3, imo. There's something about this show that tickles my wanderlust);
(Dis)Enchantment (haven't seen the later seasons just yet, but I loved it so far);
Daria (you'd be surprised at how relatable it has become in modern days. And people used to shame me for being cynical back then);
Futurama (haven't seen the new episodes, though. I'll stick to the classics);
Scoobynatural (ignore the fact that it's a Supernatural crossover. Seeing the Mystery, Inc. Gang have an existential crisis is always a treat);
Rob Zombie's The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (this one's a movie. Described as an "X-Rated Scooby-Doo", and you get to see nazi zombies being exterminated, predating South Park's The Stick of Truth);
Venture Bros. (again, this could act as a great palate cleanser if you've watched Velma);
Bob's Burgers (it's a better Nuclear Family-type of show than The Simpsons and Family Guy. 'Nuff said.);
I also remember watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Home Movies, The Critic and John Callahan's Quads as a teen, and they were quite solid from what I remember.
I haven't seen these ones, but I'm surely interested in Primal, Superjail!, Del Toro's Pinocchio, Solar Opposites, Peepoodo and the SuperFuck Friends and The Boondocks. I also wanna see Mortal Kombat's newest animated movies, they look so amazing!
Despite having S-tier animations, I absolutely hated Devilman Crybaby and Castlevania. Major buzzkill, those shows.
And I'm sure, positive and certain that Sam & Max: Freelance Police could've made a really neat adult show if Steve Purcell and crew weren't stuck dealing with censorship sensitivities (they were held back by Fox Kids censors back then).

Whoops I started thinking about it too much, so here’s
LITTLE WAYS I’D FIX AGGRETSUKO (without deviating too much from the original!)
Season 1:
I wouldn’t change much tbh this is a great season! But the one thing I’d tweak is that I’d want Haida and Retsuko to have a more interesting dynamic, where you can see him bringing out flashes of her more energetic, abrasive self before she hides back in her “polite work persona” again. I would also have him explicitly confess to her at the end of the season and have her turn him down, with him having the same realization of “I don’t really know her that well”. He’ll take the rejection well and for the next season he’s JUST her friend and vows to get to know her for herself more.
Season 2:
Again, I wouldn’t change much but I’d waaaaay tone down Haida’s jealousy and stalkery tendencies; just lean on him being a fanboy of Tadano and then being concerned about Retsuko’s health in the second half (I will allow a wistful look, but nothing more). I think I’d actually introduce Inui here as Haida’s new girlfriend and they’d date probably up until either halfway through season 3 or the start of season 4.
Season 3:
The first half of this season can mostly stay the same but I would absolutely have Retskuo stay in the band at the end; like she can definitely keep her day job, the other band members work them too. But Haida and Fenneko are also just supportive of this. Retskuo probably tries to hide it from them out of embarrassment so we can have an episode or two of shenanigans but there’s no guilt tripping her into staying at her office job that she hates.
The Inui drama that happens in the original season gets rewritten and will somewhat mirror Retsuko’s breakup with Tadano. Inui can get an opportunity that requires her to move while Haida is moving up in the company or something and they have to decide if the relationship is worth one of them giving up their dream/career opportunities. They’d decide to amicably break it off there, though they’re both really sad about it. Maybe there can be a scene where Retskuo is comforting a sad Haida and he says something like “thanks for being such a good friend through all this :(“ and she can maybe feel something like “oh I actually want to be more then his friend now” at the very last minute.
I also would not have Haida drag Retsuko away from her parents home SO SOON after being attacked, like have it start actually turning into a problem that they need to pull an intervention on. Like maybe Haida invites her to a friendly hangout and it’s only the temptation of karaoke that draws her out, and even then she can’t bring herself to do the heavy metal stuff until Haida starts playfully yelling at her with rock music. Also all the band members show up and tell her they love her and to stay with the band.
And to reiterate!!! Haida and Retsuko’s banter will have been growing more earnest and and like... playfully bickery! One of the main issues I have with them as a pairing is that every conversation they have Retskuo is so painfully polite and impersonal, compared to how she is with any of her other friends in the show. Show them “getting closer” by having their conversations actually be meaningful and fun.
Season 4:
Pretty much none of the Haida and Retsuko stuff is salvageable here ugh. In this hypothetical canon I’ve constructed, I think it would work okay to keep Haida reluctant to approach Retsuko romantically, since she’s already turned him down once, he’s still getting over his breakup with Inui, and he’s very conscious of Retsuko still recovering from getting attacked at the end of the previous season. I think I would have it so that he THINKS he might be getting signals from her, but not wanting to overstep any boundaries.
I would keep their character interactions consistent at least by having them continue guitar lessons and having him drive her to band practice (Fenneko can come too, maybe she can start seducing the leopard band manager or something) A lot of Retsuko’s arc here can be a combination of A) recovering from the attack and learning to find joy in the band again and B) Coming to terms with her new feelings for Haida, since they’ve been actually forming a good healthy friendship the last three seasons and he saved her life at the end of the last one. She can also either decide she wants to keep singing in the band OR she decides to step back from actually being a member and just wants to do the accounting. Either way she stays with them though!
I’m not sure about the office drama... I really like the stuff with Ton so I definitely want to keep that part of it there, but I’d take out the Haida being jealous and running off to the evil new president because of it stuff because that was irritating. MAYBE Haida could be getting blackmailed into being a patsy and the reason he doesn’t tell Retsuko is that he’s trying to protect her and not wanting to burden her.
Their big emotional finale can be either Retskuo just finding out about the mess Haida’s gotten himself into or he can come clean with her himself, and she can tell him that she WANTS him to burden her with things like this because she cares about him!!!! And they get together! He probably still looses his job though, sorry Haida.
Season 5:
This season can also mostly stay the same thankfully, though I think I’d take out the losing all his money to gaming parts with Haida and Retskuo thinking he’s cheating on her because. Sigh.
Just have him get evicted from his apartment after running out of money on rent and food and is unable to find a new job because of how he’s been blacklisted from the accounting world. He can just be too embarrassed to tell her, and his judgemental father can help reinforce where he got this behavior from.
Other then that, I think I’d just bump up the Retskuo running for a political office to start a little sooner in the storyline and maybe have a few more interactions with Haida and Retsuko’s parents.
THERE THAT’S HOW I WOULD FIX THE SHOW

So I answered an anime survey the other day, and it asked how many animes I've ever seen in my lifetime
I had fun remembering all of them, I just wanted to post it somewhere. (under the cut)
My rules were, I had to have sat down to watch at least one episode. So it doesn't count if I only seen a couple clips online; And one episode counts, to whether or not I've seen an anime; An anime series is counted as one, but a spinoff is it's own entry. (ex. I paired all of the original Inuyasha together (The movies, The Final Act), but seperated Inuyasha/Yashahime); And in the survey, standalone movies were their own entry too

Tag People You Want to Get to Know Better
Thank you for the tag @cakeyouareoh! 💐
Three ships: I'm not a big shipper but there are a few relationships that make me happy. Recently it's been Sam x Jack and Daniel x Sha're from Stargate SG-1. (I like Daniel and Vala together too it's just not as sweet and wholesome as him and his wife. But as Daniel's life evolves, so does what he needs in a relationship. *shrug*) I also really like the first few seasons worth of Retsuko x Haida from Aggretsuko. Most of my ships are the same as the writers lol.
First ever ship: I really don't know. Probably a disney movie though. Something like Belle and Beast. I don't remember that far back. xD
Last song/album is: Last song was Waiting for the Night/Depeche Mode and last album was Songs from the Wood/Jethro Tull.
Last movie: *sigh* Lyle Lyle Crocodile. It wasn't the worst thing. It wasn't the best thing. It was fine. I'm happy you saw the D&D movie @cakeyouareoh! I really liked it. I'm excited to re-watch it when it comes out on Blu-ray.
Currently reading: I am still slowly making my way through Sylvia Plath's diaries. (veeeeeerrry slowly and I've not been reading as often as I should). I'm technically still using Whale Weekly to read Moby Dick but I've not caught up for the last....five?....times. I do have a stack of easier books to get through, I just haven't been in the mood lately. I'm most excited for Kafka on the Shore by Murakami, so that might be next.
Currently watching: I am on the last episode of Stargate SG-1 and I admit I stopped right before it, because I wasn't mentally prepared for it to be over. After that, I'll watch the movies and then move onto Farscape. I guess I'm in my 90's-00's sci-fi era still.
Currently consuming: Decaf coffee and a Ben and Jerry's icecream later.
Currently craving: More Stargate. This obsession has been really bad. (how many months has this been going on for?) Probably also a shower.
Tumblr media
With that, I shall tag (only if you want to) @perhaps-mr-collins-has-a-cousin, @catkin-morgs, @maicometshard, @lunarlaaad, @red-winters, @raspberryzingaaa, and anyone else who would like to. <3

Dust Watched: Aggressive Retsuko Season 05
Genres: Comedy, Social Commentary // 10 episodes //  S01 (x) | S02 (x) | S03 (x) | S04 (x)
Seeing as this is the alleged (I don’t trust anything Netflix says) last season of Aggretsuko, I thought a normal essay format would be better to express my frustrations with the run of this show.
If you asked me what I thought of Aggretsuko in the beginning I would’ve said without reservation that it’s one of the best anime out there. Unfortunately, with each season, it was beginning to be more and more difficult to recommend this show and this final season was the worst kind of icing on the cake.
Season 5 has some incredibly great moments sandwiched inbetween incredibly dull and non-sensical moments that ruin the flow and make the ultimately great message of this season get lost among everything going on.
I guess it speaks to how much I cared for Haida and Retsuko’s relationship that I didn’t even bat an eye to the fact that they’re dating from the very beggining of this season despite the last season ending on an (another) will-they-won’t-they moment. I never thought the two of them had much chemistry but the show was pushing them so hard that it was pretty much a given that they would end up together.
Haida having suffered a basically complete character assassination in Season 4, turning him from a wet tissue paper to an *annoying* wet tissue paper, almost made me give up on S05 from the second it began as we start out with Haida having taken over as the protagonist. This only lasts a few episodes but these few episodes surprisingly turned out to be the best this season had to offer. Alas, this plot thread still isn’t carried by Haida, but a new character.
Haida, who is now unemployed, spends his days playing a gacha MMO (the horror) where he hangs out with another player called Shikabane. We’re shown one scene of him being sucked into spending a shitton of money on some gacha pulls, which plays a lot less importance than it could have, and on top of that he is getting kicked out of his apartment as his family who’ve been letting him live there for free found a tenant.
This puts us into one of the best short arcs from the whole anime. Haida decides to live in an internet café where he actually ends up meeting Shikabane in person. She is a 21 year old girl, who actually does “live” in a net café. She has no house, nor has any interest in subjecting herself to the fake facade people need to put on in a “normal” 9-5, instead living off of occasional freelance work and sleeping in a net café. But.. is that really what she thinks? Put a pin in that.
From here-on I’ll speedrun the rest of the season with SPOILERS upcoming.
Haida gets himself a gruelling physical job that pays like shit, suffers a bit, Retsuko and gang find out about it, he moves in with her, there’s like 1 episode focusing on how their relationship isn’t sunshine and rainbows, while we get some scenes of how Haida struggles with getting hired (put a pin in that n.2).
The second actual arc is bonkers and starts way too late into the season for it to have a satisfactory conclusion. Haida and Retsuko meet Haida’s family, we find out his dad is a politician and his other son, Jiro, will be running in the election for their Ward instead of him. Meanwhile, Retsuko’s former idol group are hamfisted into the story for no other reason than to force the other half of the plot to happen. A politician from the “Rage Party” saw Retsuko’s death voice videos and thought that she could represent today’s society’s Rage and win a seat for the declining party. Thus a few episodes are spent on FORCING Retsuko to take part in the running against Jiro, we get some minimal social commentary on what this Rage is (put a pin in that n.3).
Then, I kid you not, we get literally 5 seconds of some papers flashing that Retsuko and Haida are getting married (????), the vote (Retsuko lost), Shikabane apparently being convinced to “get her life together” from a single karaoke session, Haida getting a job (we don’t even know where or what!).... and. That’s it. The final scene is a looping back to the beginning of the whole anime. Retsuko being smooshed in the train while on her way to her normal office job.
Yeah, so, this season was messy enough as is but as a final season, it was even worse. The pacing was catastrophic, it was too slow where it should’nt have been and too fast where things happened we actually would’ve cared about (the marriage??? hello???).
But really, my main disappointment comes from those few moments where the show shines like it used to.
Aggretsuko might be a comedy but it’s just as much a social commentary. Now, the names of generations and how they are seperated differs from country to country but for the ease of things I’ll just use the western categorization.
Retsuko’s original premise is what life is like for “millenials” starting out at their first traditional jobs. How the previous generation still rules how things should be done, the power structure, the fake facade, the overtime. While not exactly translating to the west, it’s an incredibly relatable setting for the generation who was in the same shoes as Retsuko and the show itself explores all of it quite well in the first 2 seasons.
The following seasons became more bonkers, focusing less and less on the office or realistic scenarios and more on the comedy from outside sources. It was easy to kind of forget just how grounded the show used to be.
That’s where Shikabane comes in. Shikabane represents the new generation who just hit adulthood, or as we know them, Gen Z. I’m a late millenial myself, but I definitely saw a lot of how I think but especially how my younger sisters think about the world as it is now.
There is no planning for retirement, planning on buying a house or a car, settling down to have the perfect family while working a traditional job.A lot of young adults have lost hope and the drive to make a future for themselves because they cannot see how it would be possible in today’s climate. Surviving one day to the next, with no particular goal in sight, because it seems impossible. Working a 9-5, putting on a fake smile, abandoning your own personality and *hating* every second of it just to make enough to live paycheck to payckeck is something a lot of them refuse to do. But at the same time, the world is still run by the same people it was 50 years ago. Times have changed so much but they themselves refuse to change. Society is afraid of change. So what else is there to do but... give up?
That is the story you can see told through Shikabane. And in the final episode there’s a metaphorical “torch pass” between her and Retsuko. “My life isn’t what people need to see now. It’s yours.”
And despite how many problems I had with this season, despite how I wish it ended seasons ago, I’m glad Shikabane exists today because she reminded me of what I loved about this show in the beginning.
I wish I could bid farewell to this show in a better way but hey, it is what it is. And for every Shikabane out there; keep fighting.
My Rating: 4/10

Aggretsuko (Episodes 1-1, 1-5, 1-7, 2-2, 2-5)
I had no idea what to expect going into this one. The art style and choices are a departure from everything else we have covered in the class and I'll say that it fits well. To get to the analysis, Aggretsuko hits on some key themes that come from other animes we watched, like work culture with Eden of the East, and more recently femininity from Sailor Moon.
In relation to work culture, Retsuko is initially ecstatic about getting her office job, but after a few years she struggles with the constant pressure and annoying coworkers that she has to deal with daily. Her boss harasses her just because she is a introverted woman and he can get away with ordering her around. The other coworkers also deal with the boss's attitude but seemingly aren't as targeted as Resuko, a few even decide to forgo their dignity and completely suck up to the boss. Despite all the issues, Retsuko endures. She does not quite and find a new job, instead toughing it out for little reason. A possible explanation for this could be the culture surrounding work in Japan. It has been talked about before but people are expected to have these lifelong jobs and it is not standard to switch employers just because the workplace environment isn't perfect.
Tumblr media
In order to cope with this decision to stay, she vents all her pent up rage into death metal karaoke (which is awesome and probably a super healthy method of processing emotions). The only issue with this is that death metal does not "fit" the type of person that Retsuko is. She believes that this method of releasing her frustrations would result in rejection from society because it does not conform to the expectation set for a small, introverted woman. Here is where the theme of femininity fits in. With Sailor Moon, we see all the stereotypical girly objects and actions become empowered and used to great effect, in contrast, Aggretsuko takes death metal and shows it as a tool for empowering whoever embraces it. Retsuko learns to embrace death metal and benefits greatly. She makes good friends with Washimi and Gori, and destroys her boss with it in episode seven. She took something that normally is not associated with femininity and used it to better herself as a woman. To me, this is still a form of femininity, just different to the likes of Sailor Moon.
Retsuko still displays some prominent feminine qualities, such as romantic interest. She states that she wants to get married and never have to work again and her mother actually attempts to do this for her via arranged marriage. This is not what Retsuko was looking for though, she wants legitimate love, not just an easy out of the corporate world.

CURRENTLY WATCHING: March.
Tumblr media
KOREAN.
+ Call It Love (2023)(26 Feb-) ~ Airing. ★★★★☆
I am liking Call It Love way more than I expected from the initial trailer. This drama is quite pretty. It certainly isn't as depressing as the trailer made it out to be. I'm intrigued by our lead couple and how this love story might unfold. It's nice to see Lee Sung Kyung in a more serious and down-to-earth role.
+ Crash Course in Romance (2023)(14 Jan-) ~ Airing. ★★☆☆☆ tvN. Netflix
I am in love with the lead couple and most of the cast, yet here I am absolutely flabbergasted by the murder mystery plot that has finally been revealed. To be blunt, this part of the story falls very short and makes little sense to the rest of the drama. It's trying to balance too many genres at once. The murder mystery is distracting and absurd. I mostly resent these pieces of this drama since it takes away from the cute romance-y and found family moments. Last week's episodes were sorely disappointing.
+ Our Blooming Youth (2023)(7 Feb-) ~ Airing. ★★★☆☆
I am always down for a historical gender bender. Parts of it give me some Love in the Moonlight vibes. It's a bit more serious in tone, and our Prince is super broody. Though I haven't seen much from Jeon So Na before, I appreciate the energy and spunk she brings to her role.
+ Taxi Driver (2023)(s2)(17 Feb-) ~ Airing. ★★★☆☆
Based on the drama with the screenwriter for season 1, I am concerned about season 2. It's nice to see Lee Je Hoon back on television again. The first week offers a bright, colorful opening for the season with amps up its larger-than-life tone.
Plan to Watch.

unsorted Aggretsuko season 5 thoughts (with plenty of spoilers) part 2
Sanrio is too fucking chickenshit to commit to the themes they themselves introduce
{@charlie-b-t  I didn’t see season 3 because the ending of season 2 bothered me so much
Season 1 ended a little oddly but I didn’t have enough info to form a strong conclusion I ended season 2 feeling as though the show was preaching conformity. The boss being the one to convince her to stay at work after being abusive towards her and completely jaded felt so Tonally wrong I didn’t wanna see a single other episode
And then Everyone said the feeling of season 3 was off, so I am satisfied with my decision The show makes me feel uneasy, like I’m being hunted, maybe a pleasant looking snack that if I sit down to eat a box will fall on my head}
Exactly, ultimately their goal is conformity
it's a show about a woman who is into death metal, but they make particular choices to make sure she doesn't stray from the path
{(charlie) It’s like… yeah you might like unusual things and be non traditional because times have changed but that’s no reason not to be a productive citizen. Don’t dream of stardom, don’t step too far out of line. Find a man to settle down with, work an honest job, you can try unusual things but ultimately the best thing to do is conform
Like she’s 100% gonna end the series right where she was at the first episode but she’ll be happy about it because she’ll realize there isn’t actually anything More out there
It felt very realistic that she ended up in so many miserable situations but in the end it feels like that was a trick against the viewers.}
I would have been okay with an ending in which she's married and pregnant but only AFTER she has character development where she learns marriage is about having a partner that you trust and not just an escape from a tedious job
{season 1 " i wanna get married only so i can quit my job'
her season 2 boyfriend: quit your job and ill take care of you, but i don’t believe in marriage retsuko, suddenly: if you wont marry me then you arent really serious about me so ill go back to my job
it felt like the tone of the show was that she was looking for shortcuts and she should keep her head down and work at an unfulfilling job and then eventually become a housewife that works at an unfullfilling job
it didnt feel like it really matched her personality or wants. they had not previously established that she had a connectino to the concept of marriage outside of a way to quit work}
yeah her dreams of marriage and kids should have been developed better! She could have evolved to see marriage as an escape or just "something adults are supposed to do" When she broke up with Tadano would have been the PERFECT to show her inner thoughts on this too bad they expect us to swallow that marriage has been important to her all along, even though her feelings in the first season were clearly about escapism
The reason she hated her job in the first season is because working for a living in general sucks and her boss was shitty; as the seasons passed her boss gained some character development and became less shitty, but the show never addressed how she felt about the tedium of working for such a large company after that character development
she clearly likes accounting and it's more than just a job she took to pay rent
she had an opportunity in the first season to quit her secure, stable job to help with the accounting of her friend's little import shop, but it was super risky and in the end Retsuko stayed at her job for the financial stability
it's not a bad choice to make! just like breaking up with Tadano because he has different goals about marriage and children is not a bad decision either
but both times the showrunners failed to tell us how Retsuko feels
does she still resent her job? does she appreciate it more? has she given deeper thought about what marriage means to her now that she found a partner that's super compatible but is non traditional? there's hints and implications but I really wish they would spell out some of these things
{exactly, they don’t tell us which makes it feel like the show thinks 'this is obvious'
and its in contrast to them normally showing us exactly how she feels about everything, but whenever its time to conform she has no thoughts about it}
