Appreciation post for my KISS concert outfit ❤️‍🔥

The make up was super rushed and messy due to uncool train shenanigans (cancellations and massive delays) and very limited getting ready time at the hostel the day of, but otherwise I'm so so so happy with how everything turned out!

I didn't have a solid vision, it all somehow came together in the end though! 🦊💕

In the words of one of the many people who complimented my look (and asked to take photos with me): ERIC CARR IS ALIVE! ✨

Outfit rundown:

- Hair is my own, kept in Rachel Maksy style foam curlers for the duration of my train odyssey before the event

- Ears are ages old clip-ons I got at an anime convention, removed the bows and bells and added the pink lining (quickly handsewn on the train a couple hours before the concert)

- Choker is completely handmade with an ankh pendant I got at an antique market a few years ago, most of the gems are glued down due to time constraints, some are sewn because they fell off on the journey to the concert and I had to make the collar look symmetrical/make the gap above the attached pendant look intentional lol

- Fake fur collar and legwarmers are completely handmade with fabric I found at a store a couple cities away, acquiring said fabric was an entire day's journey in itself but my best option with what little time I had lol, just the right amount left on the bolt, super worth the $$$ I spent on it, so soft and fluffy, kept me cozy in the chilly stadium, definitely destiny, both of these were the stars of the whole ensemble imho

- Armbands and wrist cuffs are completely handmade, not as bedazzled and shiny due to time constraints once again, but they definitely help pull the look together <3

- Shaping bodysuit I'm wearing underneath to keep my saggy chest flaps in place is thrifted, literally purchased a day before the concert, destiny once again, this might actually become a staple piece for other low-cut neckline looks in the future <3 doesn't compress as much as a binder would, but definitely flatter and more secure than a sports bra!

- Black long-sleeved bodysuit is a fleamarket find, had to cut open and extend the crotch closure flaps to fit my long torso and added some sew-on gems along the hips and around the lace up detail neckline (which you can't see here because the fur collar covered it all up lol)

- Black leather waist belt with studs was another incredibly lucky fleamarket find and such a steal for only 3 bucks!!! perfect KISS vibes <333

- Basic black leggings were a thrift find for only 30 cents(!!!), added all the sequins one by one by hand (front and back)

- Shoes are buffalo platforms I treated myself to back in 2021, they were on sale and I've always wanted a pair of platforms and they're the only ones I own so with the outfit they went lol

- Fingerless gloves are an old fraying at the edges pair I got many moons ago at the german equivalent of a dollar store as a teen, there was no time to go looking for black leather fingerless driving gloves

Even though this was for the occasion of the very final last world tour, I kinda want to keep working on and improving this costume and take it to conventions, maybe even to KISS tribute band concerts/events if there ever are any near me!

I've really fallen in love with this outfit over the weeks and days I've collected and crafted all the pieces and I feel so confident and handsome wearing it, getting closer to my ideal of looking feminine in a masculine way 💕💕💕

posting some bits from wips so i'll work on them #3 - lead, rated e, vetinari/vimes, invisible magical collar & leash. i have a LOT of this one!

The wizards were no help at all. No bloody help, the jackals, the godsdamned lot of them, making like this was a blasted joke—

“You must admit that they were of some help, Vimes,” said Vetinari, calmly. Calmly! The man was calm! “They gave a perfectly reasonable explanation for our circumstances.”

“I have a mind,” Vimes snarled, as if he hadn’t heard Vetinari at all, “to pick them up by the scruff of the neck and shake them until the brains fall out of their ears. It wouldn’t take much shaking!”

Vetinari watched him pace. Vimes wasn’t going far. Three steps back, sharp heel turn, three steps forward, sharp heel turn, all directly in front of Vetinari. The whole time, Vimes clawed at his neck, face ruddy and jaw grinding. At Vimes’s emphatic insistence, they’d left the Unseen University grounds and were hidden a short ways away, up a small alley covered in a half centimeter of powdered sugar and flour next to the Jam Street bakeries.

Unfortunately, Vimes missed the tiny curl of Vetinari’s lips, which would have given him the necessary warning for what was coming next.

“An interesting turn of phrase you’ve used,” said Vetinari reflectively, rubbing at his wrist. “Scruff of the neck.”

Vimes stopped in his tracks and turned to face Vetinari very slowly. If Vetinari had ever gulped in fear before in his life, he would have done it again now. Instead, he gave Vimes a particularly bright smile. And rubbed his wrist again. Which Vimes saw him do.

“That is, considering what’s around y—” Vetinari started.

Rumor Made Real, the wizards had called it. Some god’s hero had failed a task on the other side of the Disc, losing a big chunk of followers, and all that belief had to go somewhere. The spare belief shattered and shot across the world, and one of those pieces hit Ankh-Morpork, where the citizenry believed, mostly metaphorically, that Lord Vetinari kept his watchdog, Commander Vimes, in a collar, on a three-meter leash.

Blessedly, the collar and leash were invisible and—according to the wizards, whose expressions were not to be borne—wouldn’t last for more than a few hours, when the spare belief started settling back into gods again. The tradeoff was that Vetinari couldn’t drop the leash. It was attached to his wrist.

Vimes felt no remorse about slamming the Patrician into a floury wall. There was a puff of white dust that settled instantly in their hair and aged them each twenty years, and haloed around them like a cheerful cloud with an uncanny—one might even say Vetinari-like—unwillingness to read the room.

“This might be the day,” Vimes growled, his forearm pinning Vetinari’s chest to the brick, the silver buttons of his jacket hard and cold on Vimes’s skin. “You owe me a life or two, and I am strongly considering collecting.”

“Vimes, you must see the humor in the situation,” said Vetinari patiently, as if he were not being lifted bodily off the ground by someone who had been removed from the Assassins’ roll for being too dangerous. Vetinari, of course, was Vetinari, and thus had a certain laissez-faire outlook towards Vimes’s frequent existential threats. He even dangled gracefully. “This is a temporary inconvenience, and somewhat of a compliment. The citizens of our fine city think that we work well together.”

“My gods, you can’t really believe that,” said Vimes. He dropped the arm (Vetinari practically floated down) and took a step back, shaking his head. Threatening a madman was pointless. “You don’t understand. You’re not the one on the end of the rope, here.” Vetinari opened his mouth and Vimes slapped his hand across it. “If you say anything clever about dogs and leashes, I will put a hole in your other leg, just to even things out.”

They stared at each other, Vetinari’s mouth covered by Vimes’s hand, as the flour sifted through the air. Vimes felt as if he’d run all the way down Short Street; his lungs were burning. Vetinari’s mouth was open a little under his hand, and Vimes could feel the heat of his small, controlled breaths, in such contrast to Vimes’s panting.

Vimes’s mind had a tidy business going this afternoon, supplying him with little tidbits that it would lob around corners when he least expected it. They think I’m his. They think he owns me. They think we—

“You are not,” Vimes spat, “going to win this one.” He pulled his hand back abruptly and, surprisingly, the Patrician fell forward a little, so obviously trying not to react that it counted as a reaction to Vimes. “So stop trying.” Vimes turned his back on Vetinari, squared his uniformed shoulders, tilted his helmet back into place, and stomped out of the alley for a dramatic exit.

And on the fourth stomp, was yanked abruptly backwards and fell, very hard, flat on his ass.

When it dawned on me...

Meeting the Fayoum golden mummy portraits that I adored from my middle school history book for the first time on their exhibition tour in North Carolina Museum of Art.

I spent a good part of the COVID era (2020-2021) in the US on a Fulbright scholarship. I was lucky to catch the golden mummies on tour in North Carolina where I was based, so I dressed up in my biggest key-of-life (ankh) and an elaborate winged eyeliner of my Egyptian ancestors to meet them. You can tell from my smile, as we say "from ear to ear", how excited I was to finally meet these folks. I am from Cairo and I have been all around Egypt, so the sight of an Egyptian monument of historical piece is nothing but ordinary, however it hit different to visit this exhibition on a different continent, and to see these portraits from Roman Egypt.

At that time, I did not know there was something such as "Afrocentrism", but I did see glimpses of that malignant theory during my stay in the US. I was once touring the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana, with an Egyptian friend, when we stopped to watch a Black Henna artist whose art was just beautiful. She asked if we were Egyptians, and when we said we were, she said "do you know that ancient Egyptians were black?" and we did not understand how she would get that weird idea, but later on we found out about this Zionist approach of blackwashing the Egyptian history. Maybe that Henna lady did not mean anything wrong, and she really believed what she was saying -- which is an even bigger problem!

I've read once a post by an Egyptian mother living in Canada who wrote about how unsafe she felt for her children. There was a school event where students had to wear something that represented their culture, and she noticed Black parents commenting on her child's Ancient Egyptian costume as "celebrating Black ancestors". She feared for the misinformation and appropriation her child has to go through in the Canadian education system, and even for his safety as an Egyptian defending his history and heritage, being "called a descendant of a white colonizer" when it is completely false.

Having realized the huge impact of Afrocentrism on people, and the way it is spreading like wildfire on the internet, I've decided to write my MA graduation thesis on the subject.

This blog is to document my academic journey, exploring this topic, the process of data collection, and any relevant information and notes I might find useful for writing my thesis. I've arranged the posts on this blog to be read from newest-to-oldest. Happy scrolling!

Adding Ethnic Jewelry to your Wardrobe

Ethnic jewelry is as unique as you are. Humans all over the world have worn jewelry throughout the ages. An unusual ethnic piece worn with a simple tee shirt and pair of jeans brings a completely different perspective to your own unique style. An ethnic piece worn with a skirt and blouse makes a memorable fashion statement.

Ethnic jewelry is an expression of the individual's creativity filtered through tradition and culture. The technique used in these pieces is usually passed from hand to hand through a culture and the pieces are often created of local materials. Ethnic jewelry is frequently symbolic relating to either the culture, the religion, the local industry or family relationships. Some ethnic jewelry is a talisman or worn to bring a certain outcome such as good fortune, strength, protection or courage, while other pieces show the wealth or position of the individual or family.

Ethnic can be either contemporary or rare antique jewelry. Some pieces have great value and are great investments. An example of this is the old pawn Native American pieces available as signed work by the artisans who created them. With modernization in the far flung regions of the world, some of the Colorful techniques used by certain tribes or ethnic groups is dying out and as this happens, these pieces become even more collectible. The turquoise found in some of the older native American jewelry is rare in itself because it comes from mines that have been closed to commercial mining, which makes these pieces quite valuable.

You can find symbolism in many different jewelry pieces. The Ankh is the Egyptian symbol of life. The Celtic Cross symbolizes the universe cut in quarters. The Chinese Ming Knot symbolizes cause and effect. And, most of us know the crow's foot as the Peace Symbol.

Some ethnic pieces are created to be worn as a talisman to provide protection or good fortune or other benefits to the person wearing the jewelry. An example of a talisman piece is the traditional African elephant hair bracelet. This bracelet is said to protect the wearer. The Scarab was worn in ancient Egypt for energy, courage and protection.

Some ethnic jewelry is helping the cultures that created it. The Bead for Life project in Africa helps the Ugandan women reach out of poverty and provide for their children by making beautiful paper beads. They recycle magazines by cutting long thin triangles and rolling them into paper beads. These beads are then chosen for color coordination and strung into necklaces and bracelets.

Caring for ethnic pieces is different from caring for contemporary jewelry. Many of the materials are not waterproof or stable in a cleaning solution, so cleaning can damage them. Some of them are made of wood or seeds and plant oils, not mineral based oils can be helpful in protecting and preserving them. If jewelry made of plant materials is shipped from outside the country it may have been sprayed with insecticide or other materials that can cause allergies.

In general the buyer, should use caution in buying any jewelry, and buy from reputable sources both for investment value and human rights issues associated with the buying and selling of jewelry.

Imagine how a Chinese Cinnabar bracelet, a Navajo squash blossom or hand carved scarab earrings can accent your basic wardrobe pieces with an expression of your own unique personality and style.

She often imposed self-care as she enjoys Jacuzzi spas, eating rosewater Turkish delights, and drinking beer, often with a pilstulpe glass. However, she also encourage people to “treat themselves”. When she is with all of the other Cuckoos, Babes’ mind goes into “sync” and joins their collective. She is more in tune with the hive mind and their shared abilities.

Key Moments:

Tsekani is a mix of Arabic and European and Anqttite is Ethiopian. While Babes has taken her father’s name, she has taken more interest in her mother’s side as she is expected to inherit her mother’s properties and estate.

She uses her pet cat, Sekh, to see things in areas where she can't enter and spy on others. She always gives Sekh the best of everything for the cat, such as gourmet cat food, toys, scratch posts, and beds.

Babes designed her own clothes since she was young as she has gotten multiple fabrics in different colors. Her clothes are inspired by Ancient Egyptian and Ethiopian cultures.

Babes is known to “treat” her guests as she telekinetically performs the Ethiopian coffee ceremony and gives them Turkish delights, muhallebi, halva, and basbousa. Her drawing room is decorated with designs of blue Egyptian lotus, the Nile River, and golden reeds. She often does this with Korer and Tania.

Her regenerated eye appears to be enhanced some of her abilities, which becomes known as the “The Eye of the Sun”.
