Battlestar Galactica Rewatch: Mini series
You can thank @beatrice-otter for this. Her recent bsg fic had me reaching for my dvds when I realized how much I'd forgotten.
The mini series introduces the titular Battlestar Galactica, a 50-year-old ship under the command of Bill Adama, just as it is set to be decommissioned and turned into a museum. His estranged son Lee and Secretary of Education Laura Roslin are both in attendance. Then, everything changed when the fire nation, er, cylons attacked. Laura becomes president, assembled a fleet of civilians, and they set of with Galactica in search of earth and safety.
Initially airing in 2003, the show often gets described as post 9/11, but on rewatch it feels more cold war nightmare scenario to me. The visuals are mushroom clouds, not crashing jets. Laura's swearing evokes LBJ's and the scene with the little girl on the ship is basically a Barry Goldwater commercial. The only things that really scream 9/11 is the memorial wall and the planes halted in transit.
In my first watch, I remember being moved, but on rewatch I'm not feeling it. The problem is that it's so fast paced there are really only two quick moments with Dee in the hallway and Billy talking about his family where you get a hint of the weight of it. The show gives more to the ship board deaths. Over all, the show is so focused on the fight for survival that it never lets the characters or audience really sit with the grief.
Mini series does a good job introducing the various characters: Laura, Bill, Kara, Lee, Saul, Gaius, Boomer, Tyrol, and the rest of the gang. The fact they shoehorn Tyrol and his deck gang into everything that requires non-coms makes sense in terms of managing casting, it does get ridiculous.
The problems of Bill Adams's leadership which will haunt him throughout the show are on full display. He plays favorites in ways which undermines unit discipline and cohesion and ignores problems until the day comes he can't hide from the things he's done.
Laura's leadership strength of ruthless, clear-sighted pragmatism are also on display. Her flaw of riding roughshod over everyone is there too, but since everyone who fights her in this is clearly wrong, it's easy to miss.
From a Doylist perspective, having Leobin as the only one in the station makes sense as a way to introduce Adama to human-form cylons, but from a Watsonian perspective the fact the station is in-manned makes the Colonial Fleet seem dumb and incompetent.
This has been much debated, but I think Caprica killing the baby was an accident. She is fascinated and it's all an experiment. She doesn't care she killed him, but she didn't set out to do it.
Bill gives a great speech. So say we all!

Oh wow I'm listening to a mini-documentary on BSG 1978 with some audio from the cast
And with Richard Hatch, yeah you can tell that's Apollo.
But Dirk Benedict is just Starbuck, no possible doubt whatever.

Sending you a star ⭐️⭐️ cause I'm cold and waiting on trick or treaters outside and don't wanna think but want to know what you are dying to spill about a work.
Oooooh I was still at work when I reblogged that post, but hopefully you still enjoy this snippet from the warmth after the trick or treaters!
Okay, this is from my BSG Mini Bang and I've also been hung up on it ever since I wrote it because I love it so much!
“No, you told me about President Roslin. I want to know about Laura.”
“Laura is President Roslin,” she reminded him, but she knew it was a lie. The pieces of Laura that remained were small, cracked and worn around the edges, but they were still there.
Bill kept them safe when President Roslin threatened to sever the last ties to those vital parts of herself.

regardless of whether you ended up dis/liking it in the end, which Star Trek series/episode/whatever do you think possesses the most unrealized potential in terms of "it could have gone so far and done so much, and instead (whatever it actually did)"
Or is that really kind of an unanswerable mu-question because every element of a show is already in a process of limitation-and-realization even at the point that you're just pitching something to the studio, so everything has (had) limitless potential once?
it may be an unanswerable question, but it's a fun one, so i'm gonna try anyway.
i mean Voyager is one obvious possibility; Ron Moore was so annoyed with what Voyager could have been that, IIRC, he created the rebooted Battlestar Galactica in response (not that that show didn't have other very glaring flaws!). I think you see a glimpse of this potential in the Year of Hell two-parter--it all gets reset in the end, but imagine if that had been a whole season, without a reset button, and thus real stakes!
though i think voyager was actually pretty fun and i like what we got instead--sure, it could have been Darker and Edgier, like BSG, but now that we've had nothing but 15 years of Darker and Edgier prestige TV, i'm kind of soured on that whole shtick. and the slightly fluffier stuff is a refreshing contrast.
i think Discovery was originally pitched as like a per-season anthology show, with different seasons occurring in different eras. I would have liked that better than what we got; I think prequel series are kind of dumb, and i think going 900 years into the future in the third season is kind of a drastic overcorrection. Discovery is fine, like i don't hate it, but Bryan Fuller was originally attached to the show, and I think he would have produced a higher-quality product than what we got in the end.
the existence of Picard (which is deeply silly, and not entirely in a good way) suggests the possibility of a series following Seven of Nine instead, where Picard would have been an occasional bit character. i would have much preferred that to what we actually got, which i don't hate, but which i am definitely conscious has way too much cheap fanservice in it.
i don't like prequel series and so on principle i would not have greenlit Enterprise, but if we were going to have Enterprise, 1) we needed a better actor than Scott Bakula to anchor it, and 2) more interesting stories than we got in the first two seasons. season 4 was great, with lots of very interesting little mini-arcs--if the stories of season 4 had been done in season 1 instead, and we'd had more of that, i think Enterprise would be much more fondly remembered. as it stands its best feature was Jeffrey Coombs, which suggests the obvious possibility of just putting him in the main cast. which would have been great.

I’m watching BSG miniseries for the first time since the mini aired.
It’s so interesting to watch BSG alongside my Voyager rewatch, by all accounts Battlestar Galactica 2003 was in response to the Ron D Moore’s battles in the Voyager writer’s room.
It feels like from Bryan Fuller to Ronald D Moore, these writers have Voyager writer’s room related anger.
The writers were chafing at the bit at the way they always had to reset back to status quo, and hated how Voyager’s rich premise was being hamstrung by Braga.
TrekMovie: On Voyager and Battlestar, it is a ship on its way to Earth with no infrastructure, there are some parallels. Would ‘Ron Moore’s Voyager’ be like Battlestar, if you were the showrunner?
Ron Moore: Yah…probably…when I was on my brief tenure on Voyager and I was starting to think in terms of what I wanted to do, I remember sitting with the writing staff and saying ‘I really think…that when Voyager gets damaged it should get damaged, we should stop repairing the ship, the ship should be broken down more and devolving a little bit more.’ One of the ideas I had is that they should start developing their own culture within the starship and letting go of Starfleet protocols and stop thinking of themselves as Starfleet people on some level, even though they still wear the uniform and still try to adhere to the regulations. I thought it would be interesting that by the time this ship got back to Earth, that it didn’t even belong at Earth anymore. That it sort of had become its own culture, it had formed its own civilization which was dissimilar to that which they had left behind…Now that you mention this there was somebody, I don’t think it was me, somebody had pitched the notion of them having to guard some alien ships they had encountered. It was a convoy and through some plot I can’t remember that they had agreed to protect and Sheppard through some hostile star systems on their journey. And they were going to be the warship tending the little convey of civilian ships. And I was really taken with it and really liked the idea and thought it would be cool and it was sort of Galactica. We might have even mentioned Galactica….but to your question, If I had been the showrunner from the beginning I probably would have sent it into a darker direction and sent it into a more harrowing journey yes. And made them more on the run and more less of a pretty journey getting back, and at the same time, I probably would have felt compelled to stay within certain boundaries of what Trek was and how Trek had established itself. So I don’t think I could have taken Voyager to the places I have taken Galactica, even if I did have the reins.
(source)
I think in the end, I wouldn’t have liked going on the deep end of this. A compromise of having more repercussions but still having the rails a Trek show would have, would work more.
I like the idea of Voyager having its own culture and the crew feeling out of step with Earth when they return.
Eventually, even BSG fell down some narrative deep end that was too much.
It’s kind of amazing how Battlestar Galactica disappeared from the cultural zeitgeist because it was almost as big as Game of Thrones back in the day. It won so many accolades and awards that for a good long while almost every space show had the gritty filter of BSG.
I think that’s what ultimately killed the Stargate Franchise when it tried to BSG-fy Stargate Universe.
TLDR, it’s interesting to look at Roslin and see the narrative lineage from Janeway to Roslin.
And looking at Adama/Roslin, it’s interesting how Chakotay/Janeway could have gone if Ron Moore were allowed to do more things in Voyager.
It’s also fascinating how Roslin grew and took command the moment a crisis happened. If not for the attack (which until the end was BAFFLING because no matter how much the intro says it, THERE WAS NO PLAN) Roslin would just be in the background. Her potential unrealized.

For the fanfic writer asks, 8 please ❤️
8. What project(s) are you currently working on?
Errr... let me see. There are a few :
there's the two big/mini bang fics which are in the editing phase...
The one Mass Effect fic which I've currently have on hold because apparently the only smut I'm intimidated about writing is Turian alien smut... 🤣
Finally, there's a BSG Soulmate AU rewrite I'm working on that's at like 17k currently. It's probably my most ambitious piece but it also is the most difficult... I expect I'll eventually have enough meat to start posting by the end of the year? Maybe?

Coming Attractions!
First Monday of the month (and year!) so here we go!
I'll tag an Open Question Night onto this, too--anything I've posted about here or on AO3 is fair game! I do take prompts but am not necessarily quick to fill them lol.
A little different than the others, since it's January and that means Resolutions of a sort, lol. But first, a quick regular post:
BSG Fic:
Didn't write or post any, but I did podfic for a few Galactica Big Bang/Mini Bang fics, and that was a lot of fun! I had a great time running the event, and am looking forward to doing it again next year (and maybe writing for it as well lol).
If I do write, the two ideas that are foremost in my brain right now (that would work for the event; as opposed to crossovers and/or projects that are Way beyond the scope of an event like this) are:
The Blood of Angry Men Zarek character study in the form of him looking back on his life as he faces his execution after the mutiny. Partly about the question of where does he land on the spectrum of actually believing his rhetoric vs. using it/the way people believe in him to achieve power; partly about this really great quote of his from Kobol along the lines of "it's a lot harder to get blood on your hands than to wash it off later"; partly about his relationships with his inner circle/followers (there would be some stuff about before he went to prison; about Gaeta; about the friend of his who died on Kobol whose name escapes me).
Percussive Maintenance Joke title that would Not remain lol. But yeah this is basically...so, that bit in Downloaded, where Sam is trapped in the exploded parking garage with Boomer, Caprica, and Three insert tangent about 'are there one, two, or three significant Threes it is Unclear' and he gets knocked out like three times? What if. What if all those concussions. What if they unlocked his memories. Probably building up to where he is before he has to be hybridized if not there initially but. What If. (The problem with this one is it miiiiiight also be out of scope, also there's the moment he wakes up and then going back to the school and having a Chat with Philosopher!Cavil and then...not sure where to go from there.)
I also really genuinely do want to get TOB off the ground this year (I know I keep saying that but). And maybe one of the crossover ideas I have floating around in my head, but We'll See. Hopefully I'll have Something out this month (but I'm also waffling a little on How I want to start it--I think it probably makes the most sense to just go in show order and bounce back and forth between the Pegasus and Galactica plotlines once I get all the miniseries setup out of the way there is so much setup omg but every so often I ask myself 'but do I really want to do that? XD)
Also, since I Obviously fell way behind and didn't finish the Year of the OTP project, I'll pick that up and do the rest this year XD
Star Wars fic:
Going back and forth about participating in SWBB this year. I need to actually get on that because deadline for signups is on the 10th, lol. If I do participate it would be the one I planned to do last year (Anakin never joined the Order and meets Ahsoka halfway through the Clone Wars) but never got off the ground.
Note about OTP fills applies here as well, lol.
Also hoping to finally dive back into Precipice this year, so fingers crossed lol.
Other Fandoms (mostly Les Mis, LBR):
I do plan on doing Pod_Together again later in the year because I generally have fun doing it! Will probably adjust my fandoms list though because I keep getting matched on secondary/tertiary fandoms and while stretching myself to write for them is fun, I'd like to do something a little less Stretchy this year if possible, haha.
And I will be updating P&J, I promise XD I know where it's going, and I know what Ari is going to learn, though the specific order/circumstances in which the information comes out I'm still sorting out exactly when and how. (I think there are going to be some Previously Unpublished Letters when Ari gets to the Marseille exhibit about Thierry that give a Name to J, but I'm not sure if Ari's going to go there first or go to Dover or Paris first. And then Calais which is Relevant and Important). Goal is to get At Least one more chapter out this month.
Provenance will come when I finish that--it fills in the gaps Ari can't because Certain People decided to Burn All Their Correspondence, lol.
And then I'm also working on Acheron which is a Groundhog Day AU that I'm excited for. May or may not be other things coming in this fandom, we'll see XD
I do also want to get back to Incinctus and/or other Castlevania ideas I had. May be rewatching that series and/or finally watching Nocturne to jumpstart my brain? So maybe that'll happen this month but it's definitely a lower priority than the other things.
Original Fic:
I think I had a fairly good year where this is concerned? Year of the OTP plus a series of anniversary challenges on Rainbowfic got me to put out a fair amount! Hopefully next year will also be good (I do still have to finish the Year of the OTP for the three ships I was doing here as well, lol.)
...yep, that pretty much sums it up!
So, on to Resolutions! So to speak.
2023 goals:
Post at least arc 8 (and ideally also part 9) in Precipice!Verse as well as at least half of the Preludes stories. ....nope. XD
Write at least 10k of origfic content. Nearly doubled my goal with about 18.7k words!
Complete SWBB and participate in at least one other challenge/exchange Half-completed--I ended up dropping out as a writer from SWBB, but I did Pod_Together and also Ran GBB so XD
Continue posting Incinctus and start posting The Other Battlestar and at least one other non-challenge fic project. Well, I didn't do Incinctus or TOB, but I did do other non-challenge fic projects? Lol XD
Write at least one holiday fic (Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Halloween, New Year’s, Etc.) and post on the appropriate day I actually did do this!
Bonus Goal: Update the origfic archives already. Bonus Goal #2: I have at least one half-finished AU outline I should actually finish and post that. And maybe update the Ventress and Luke time-travel one Yeaaaah neither of these got done, either XD
2024 Goals:
[basically repeating myself, NGL XD]
Get back into Precipice; post at least three chapters of Protectors and at least one Preludes one-shot.
Write at least 10k of origfic content.
Participate in at least two challenges/exchanges.
Start posting The Other Battlestar; complete P&J; and start or post at least one other non-challenge fic project.
Complete the Year of the OTP fills.
Bonus Goal: Write at least one holiday fic (Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Halloween, New Year's, etc.) and post on the appropriate day Bonus Goal #2: Update origfic archives Bonus Goal #3: Post at least one AU Outline.
