one of the things I meant yesterday by American composers during the Great Depression was the paradigmatic example of George Antheil, who was an ultramodernist avantgardist whose ballet mecanique—-really fun piece, check it out—-
(penguins! dashboard continuity) got a really decisively different reception in the US at the beginning of the depression than it had in Paris some years earlier—-dadaist wonder there, in the US airplane propellers etc simply pissed off not only the New York audiences but the people who were reading it in the papers. What the hell are these games? …so like Copland writing Rodeo, Antheil started working with more clearly traditional forms, American folk music themes, clearly melodic, patriotic

The OG industrial I guess...
Music from the first half of 20th century that either imitates industrial sounds (noises of production plants, trains, airplanes, cars) or straight up uses them.

Very much mechanical. Performed by robotic orchestra.
Bonus: Restored 1924 version, human version with fans.

Man Ray     Sculptor Alexander Calder, Paris     1931
“The sense of motion in painting and sculpture has long been considered as one of the primary elements of the composition... Marcel Duchamp's 'Nude descending the stairs' is the result of the desire for motion. Here he has also eliminated representative form. This avoids the connotation of ideas which would interfere with the success of the main issue - the sense of movement. Fernand Léger's film, 'Ballet Mecanique' is the result of the desire for a picture in motion... Therefore, why not plastic forms in motion? Not a simple translatory or rotary motion but several motions of different types, speeds and amplitudes composing to make a resultant whole. Just as one can compose colors, or forms, so one can compose motions.” Alexander Calder, “Modern Painting and Sculpture” 1933

Exploring Avant-Garde Cinema: Past and Present
I recently looked into two groundbreaking experimental films, "Ballet Mecanique" (1924) and "Un Chien Andalou" (1928), which challenged cinematic conventions of their time. To deepen my understanding, I read Shingler's (2022) insightful exploration of modernity and machinery in "Ballet Mecanique."
One quote from Shingler's reading that I resonated with was: "The avant-garde film is an experimental work of art that seeks to create a new cinematic language, often through the deconstruction of conventional narrative structures and the exploration of new visual and thematic possibilities."
This quote resonates with a contemporary video clip I found. In this clip, we see a short film that embodies the avant-garde spirit. It pushes the boundaries of conventional storytelling and engages viewers through visuals and thematic exploration.
The connection between Shingler's quote and the contemporary clip is the influence of avant-garde pioneers like "Ballet Mecanique" and "Un Chien Andalou." They continue to inspire creators who strive to redefine cinematic language, proving that the avant-garde spirit lives on today.

Resemble github  Resemblyzer allows you to derive a high-level representation of a voice through a deep learning model (referred to as the voice encoder). Given an audio file of speech, it creates a summary vector of 256 values (an embedding, often shortened to "embed" in this repo) that summarizes the characteristics of the voice spoken.N.B.: this repo holds 100mb of audio data for demonstration purpose. To get the package alone, run pip install resemblyzer (python 3.5+ is required). https://github.com/resemble-ai/resemblyzer
