wip 1/2: office hours.
(the rizzard at work + lunch with the spouse)
Chalk tapped against the chalkboard as he sipped gently at a mug of tea and cleared his throat continuing with his speech. His hair was thrown back into a loose half up and down messy bun, staticky hair poking and prodding out like new spring buds. He wore a new suit vest, a stripped pattern with an argyle tie, and a light blue button down, paired with the same-colored magenta slacks. His tie pin was one of a crescent moon, (he had been on a theming kick recently). Today was on magic in other areas, written on the board were a couple pooled questions by the students. Does music automatically equal magic? How do paladin oaths work? Is It possible for magic to be innate?
He finished off his mug tapping at pages to read on the board, waving off the students and their cloaks that looked way too large for them. A stream of bobbing heads, ears and horns followed out the door. You had to maneuver around the groups of students, slowly moving their way out, a few stragglers lounging around the professor’s desk.
“I hope I’m not too late-“you approach him, setting the tin of food wrapped in a handkerchief onto his desk.
He beamed when he laid eyes on you, cheeks flushed a rosy hue. “you’re right on time, ill see you in the office, I just need to help a student with a spell pronunciation- then ill be with you.” He caught a finger under your chin, kissing your brow. His breath smelt of an earthy green tea, sweetened with honey, and the zeal of lemon juice that followed. He turned his back to you, helping the student to write it out phonetically. You heard his bright praise as the thick office door closed behind you.
the thick office door closed behind you.
The office- you remembered dearly, you helped assemble. A room with high ceilings, decorated with diagrams of spells and sheet music. One wall was clad with photos of his family, a portrait of the both of you front and center. Small linocuts of your companions sat on a bookshelf nearby, as well as tomes discussing your previous acts, which he so proudly showed off. He had asked for a new cupboard to house all sorts of dried teas, which he unhinged the doors of and installed onto the walls, framing them with delicate laces. It mirrored a little alchemical shop. The walls were a cozy and warm purple with white and brown accents. He had a little hearth and big windows facing the bay, a window ajar, the new tressym kitten may have gone out exploring. Tara the second, Gale called her.
The door creaked open as you admired the wall of portraits, you jumped within your shoes tail swishing in a slight panic.
“im sorry little love, have I frightened you?” he kissed your shoulder, wrapping his arms around your waist and swaying gently. His lips found their way up to the shell of your ear, nipping it gently. He spun you around, taking in your new sundress, yellow with pops of white blooms, a pair of lacy socks and brown kitten heels to match.
“you look positively divine- are you sure there wasn’t other intentions behind this?” he cocked a brow, the settled in features of his face creasing with mirth.
You’ll be completely honest with your feelings, jobs, children, life in general as led you two apart. Intimately it seems-
This you had no problems with, as gale had all the love in the world for you. He made sure to show his affections readily and often- with you in turn.
To this- you sheepishly nodded, tucking a curl behind your ear. “Perhaps there was motive… if you’ll oblige me of course.” Something new swirled into his eyes, a fiery spark of desire. He cracked a grin turning heel to the door. “Shame lunch will be spoiled then; I do have an appetite for something else in mind. And I wouldn’t be a smart man to waste an opportunity like this.” With a quick flit of his fingers a secure spell of arcane lock was cast

Another auvember prompt!! This one is a song ficlet for an au where Splinter and the turtles are human. He adopted them with his partner I have left very vague.
Here is the link to the song, it’s from a musical you can find on YouTube for free called Nerdy Prides Must Die!: https://youtu.be/ebetUH8KWfg?si=5tQtF1bW_SKCCr8M

BBQ
Yoshi stepped inside, closing the sliding door behind him. The noise of the party outside became muffled. His partner was left outside to handle the grill.
He just needed a second away from everything.
Several more steps and he found himself in the living room. There had an opportunity to see the font yard in full view. It was empty since all of the guests were in the back.
Saturday we installed a new bay window,
And it was something right, out of a dream, I never had.
He didn’t hate the window. It just wasn’t what he wanted. It was a compromise. Life and marriage is all about compromise.
He glances into the kitchen where snacks were still strewn about the counter.

Saturday belongs to soccer practice,
I pack their little cakes, for after the games, they never win.
It’s not as if he was truly disappointed in his kids. Even if they did win the games, what would they get? A little trophy? A medal? It was just for them anyways. They had more of a right to be sad. It was something they all wanted to do.
Except Donatello, he’d rather collect data on the games he watched and dryly cheer his brothers on.
Many found it strange, he found it….endearing. Some children, like Mikey, draw their parents pictures. Donnie codes a drawing.
He wished he could put it on the fridge. Donnie figured out how to print it. It looks nice up there.
And life is full of all of the trappings of the well-to-do
And life goes on, as I shop for shutters to obstruct the view.
And life is fine, if only it were mine.
He wouldn’t trade his current life for anything. Still….he missed his former life as well. Not the part where his ex/former agent forced him to take on roles he hated and burnt him out to all hell of course.
But just for once I’d be the center of attention.
Just for once, remember what a life can be.
Before that, when the spotlight was his, utterly and completely his. When people were entertained by what he wanted to do. When people called him by a different name and cheered it, had him sign it, loved it.

Just for once I feel the light inside, the burning of a candle.
Living just for once,
Living just for-
He enters the bathroom and catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror.
39, I lose my hair under careful chemo treatment
And I was not unhappy, about the attention I ensnared
Judge me
Cancer was nothing to joke about. Well, he had to joke to cope. He had to joke to keep his children from panicking. Attention was on him while he struggled.
He remembers when his first injury, his first illness, finally managed to be the thing that pulled him from his toxic romantic and work relationship.
This time was a bit different from that.
There were people who stuck around him, wanting him to beat it.
There’s a magazine nearby with her on it. Big Mama, her stage name, hanging on the shoulder of another idiot who fell for her lies.

It fucking worked, I’m fucking here, he’s fucking her
I’m disappointed
He couldn’t warn anyone about her. A strict contract, an NDA forbidding it.
He feels the fabric underneath his feet the longer he stood there.

There’s still carpet in the bathroom
And of the two, who’s the worse for wear
Me
There’s scratching at the door before a dog pushes it open, realizing it was never fully closed.
We love our dogs, especially Captain
He’s a bullshit mix
Raph would bring home stray animals as often as he saw them. 90% of them had to go to some other good home.
They kept two dogs to make it easier to say no.
He splashed water on his face before leaving the bathroom with Captain. They went back to the sliding door and he let him out.
Captain ran off to the pool area where all the kids are having a nice time under careful supervision.
He glances at his partner.

The pool is out, the neighbors come rushing
Maury Prefers their kids
When he was younger, he would get compared to other kids constantly. They had better grades, they respected their teachers, they didn’t talk back.
Most of those kids didn’t have a father who ran off while also having a mother who died.
They didn’t have to listen to their grandpa act like they weren’t trying, probably.
His children had two parents.
He was there, but was he truly around?

And the world's a stage when you’re middle of age
But just for once my life could be just what I wanted
Just for once I'd feel the spark that I once knew
Everything in his life had been working against him.

Just for once I’d feel the fight inside, the burning of a candle
Something more than I can handle
Just for once
His partner ushers him over. He needed to watch the grill now so that there was time to talk to the guests. Enough was spent taking a break already.
He holds the spatula and stares down at the meat sizzling in front of him.
Should I flip the burgers now
Should I double check it's well done on the outside not within
Oh

If he messed up the food, Donnie would refuse to eat. Raph wouldn’t care, Leo would dump ketchup on it and chow down.
His partner would probably be slightly angry.
He feels Mikey pull on his apron.
Should I let the coals burn out?
Should I let the years cook my body down in front of him.

Mikey smiles up at him with his wide, gap toothed grin.
He babbles about burger grilling techniques he saw on his favorite cooking TV show.
Yoshi smiles and picks him up with his free arm. If his body was not well enough for performance, he was glad it was healthy enough for them.
Mikey happily keeps talking as Yoshi grills.
Oh-oh
Just for once
Just for once
Just for once
He sees one of the neighbor kids talking to Leo about her dance classes. Leo loves anything where people have to watch him do something.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
The other day the Johnsons borrowed my tap shoes
Their eldest daughter is beginning tap
It was no bother, I never ever use them.
He hopes that none of his kids turn out like him.
He wants them to be better.

I used to dance
I used to dance

Costa visits a sustainable house and garden, designed to make efficient use of every space. Subscribe 🔔 http://ab.co/GA-subscribe
Mike and his partner bought an unrenovated house on a leafy Mt Colah street 10 years ago. Their garden starts on the verge with edibles, and the front yard is a thriving ‘no dig’ food forest. There’s another obvious sign that there’s something interesting going on here - a community swap stall with seeds, plants and books all enclosed in a big, old red phone box.
Mike says he’s met more of my neighbours in the last month, than in seven years!
Mike’s aim is to improve livability while caring for the planet. Mike renovated the original house to increase its energy efficiency, with solar water and solar electricity. He’s built a hardwood pergola down the west side of the house which hosts a grapevine that shades the house in summer. It’s the first of many clever structural innovations he has installed in his garden using mostly recycled materials.
Compost System:
The three-bay compost system is built from recycled roof sheets and brick pallets. Liquid from the back of the bays runs and into a well-positioned bucket. Like all the compost, this liquid is then diluted and used on the garden.
Chook House:
The chook house is palatial and has been built using leftovers from the renovation. It’s both vermin and fox proof, and he used the old front door as the human entrance.
Irrigation:
Rainwater is captured across the site, stored and cleverly distributed. Mike has four tanks positioned around the garden that collectively hold 27,000 litres of water. The garden is irrigated via overhead driplines and tank overflows are redirected to garden beds. Storm water from the driveway is redirected into a set of pipes that are re-directed into the garden.
The entire back lawn was dug up to create swales (a series of contoured ditches) designed to slow down water flow and hold it in the soil.
There’s was a rocky outcrop in the backyard where water naturally collected into a pond. Mike has since bricked in the pond, added a bathtub for an outdoor pool for the kids and then found a bathroom basin which he turned into a bird bath.
Wicking Beds:
Mike has made wicking beds from second hand bulk containers. One is used as a liquid fertiliser brewer and the other four have been chopped in half to make 8 wicking beds. The sides of the wicking beds are protected from the sun with recycled zinc aluminium panels take from a roof. The wicking beds are placed in an ‘exclusion zone’, that has been covered with netting to prevent fruit fly, possums and rats making off with the produce.
For Mike, the journey of the garden is infinitely more important than the destination. He’s learnt a lot on the way and is keen to keep learning. It’s inspiring to see what can be achieved in such a short space of time and what will follow, as Mike’s sustainable gardening journey continues to grow.
Featured Plants:
SYDNEY GREEN WATTLE - Acacia decurrens *
THYME - Thymus vulgaris cv.
PINEAPPLE SAGE - Salvia elegans
SILVERBEET - Beta vulgaris cv.
PEACH ‘FLORDAGOLD’ - Prunus persica cv.
QUINCE - Cydonia oblonga cv.
BASIL ‘PERENNIAL’ - Ocimum cv.
FENNEL - Foeniculum vulgare cv. *
* Check before planting: this may be an environmental weed in your area

WIP Wednesday (ish)
it’s friday but fuck it who cares, have a sample of what I was working on before my hiatus;
Placed under the cut. Contains A/B/O, Kidnapping, Stockholmn Syndrome, and the vibe is extremely dubby. It’s the third installment of (What You Want). Make good choices for yourselves kids.
The shift in their dynamic after her heat ended was palpable. The tentative truce between the two of them as fragile as a baby bird.
Parts of the dynamic shifted. Rook’s heat addled drive to make her nest more inviting hadn’t faded when her heat left. No longer did she feel compelled to defend her space so viciously against him.
Other parts of the dynamic stayed the same; Jacob kept her under lock and key, isolated from the rest of society. Much akin to before, he made no further attempts to woo or seduce her. She was kept on an iron clad schedule dependent on his own itinerary for the day and as a creature of habit his day to day rarely changed.
She hated being treated like a glorified pet but had submitted to the apathy brewing inside of her. She also hated the fact that she didn’t want to hate being treated like a glorified pet.
The thoughts spiraled in her head, Rook unable to come up with any sort of solution. She felt twitchy and restless at the inability to soothe her discomfort, suffering from the exact opposite of overstimulation; Jacob had been so careful to avoid anything that would tip her over the edge, avidly encouraging the fragile and growing peace between them.
Like a tiger trapped in a cage, she contemplated her next move; On the one hand, escape was both unlikely and unappealing. On the other there was still that little voice berating her for letting him into her space without a fight.
The entire time she’d been trying to get some semblance of a Resistance in working order she’d been hungry, stressed as all hell constantly and perpetually sleep deprived. Even working with a companion had ill afforded her any sense of safety or security. Another person had afforded some protection but they were still under threat anytime they weren’t secure in an outpost (which they almost never were, because you couldn’t regain stolen ground by staying holed up in the safe houses). The stress had eaten away at her, weight melting off her frame between the constant movement and constant stress literally eating her from the inside out.
It was safe here. Jacob held no desire to cause her active pain or suffering. He kept the rest of his soldiers at bay. She was bored but it was secure and she didn’t have to look over her shoulder or sleep with one eye open. Her weight was finally (more or less) back to what it had been before all this nonsense with the Collapse and Eden’s Gate had popped off, her ribs smoothed over and curves filling back out.
Traitor the voice whispered at her, causing the disquiet in her gut to fester.
She couldn’t reconcile the disconnect between her biology having her hardwired to want nothing more than to get on her hands and knees and be bred by her alpha, and the logic of knowing he was an impossibly flawed man who’d committed countless atrocities.
Jacob was oblivious to the thoughts spiraling in Rook’s head, thinking that perhaps now things would be different. She would finally calm down and they could live life how it was meant to be.
The gesture he meant to present her with was a heady one- most of her nesting materials had either already been in the room when she’d been brought in, or left somewhere she’d readily find it when she exited the attached bathroom and returned to the main area.
Without question, this was yet another extended olive branch on Jacob’s part. Directly gifting nesting material was a courting step.
It stated an intention in no uncertain terms, and Rook was anything but certain at the moment.
She didn’t even realize she’d slapped it out of his hand until the fabric dropped in a pool at his feet. She didn't even know why she’d done that. The action had been done on an almost reflex, and a serious rejection on her part.
She could apologize and try to rectify the situation yet found no words coming out of her mouth.
Every muscle in Jacob’s body stiffened and for one moment Rook thought she might have pissed him off enough for him to hit her in retaliation.
Not responding at first, the alpha took a sharp inhale and let it out slowly, eyes drifting down to the bedding before looking back at her.
“Put your shoes on.”
Her brain almost couldn’t process the words, not expecting that to be his response and struggling to jump to what his plan was.
“What?” she said more in reflex to her confusion than a genuine inquiry, her brain catching up and processing the order.
His tone was flat and level, furthering the disquiet in her gut with the knowledge he was not thrilled with her at the moment, “Don’t make me repeat myself, Rook. I’m not in the mood.”
The balance they’d struck firmly upheaved, she jumped to the task like listening now would make up for the reaction to the bedding.
Once she had her shoes on (something she hadn’t bothered with in almost a literal year since he never took her anywhere) he opened the door without a word.
He’d come to some sort of decision, that much was clear. She just didn’t have a clue what it was, and that was making her twitch with nervous energy.

Screeech's Surprise (Day 177)
Captain Cosmic Peanut stood sobbing in the cargo area. Gakk Delgado, the Tech Tree employee looked as stunned as me by this development. He said, "Don't cry. Don't. Don't." A tear welled up in his own eye and spilled to the floor.
The captain didn't seem to notice as it splashed across her boots. That's how upset she was by the scene of destruction in front of her.
It was my fault, of course. My fault that one of the three VR rigs we'd bought had been savaged beyond repair by Screeech. To his credit, the abomination had stopped eating the crate the moment I told him to. But by then, the damage was done. The stasis gel pooled on the cargo bay floor, and wires and diodes hung limply from the rig's scratched and gnawed frame. Screeech had certainly enjoyed what he took to be a surprise meant for him.
Only an hour before I'd been basking in Requiem's successful concert, confident in my place within the group, confident in my ability to be the best First Mate that Cosmic Peanut had ever had. And now? Now I stood at my workbench-- no, the workbench onboard Malaka. It was not mine; it had never really been mine, and now I would leave it forever. I meant to quit with dignity before the captain could fire me for my failure with the VR rigs.
How had this even happened?
We'd bought the VR rigs at Tech Tree and negotiated with the employee, Gakk Delgado, for delivery and installation the next day. Later, when we'd left the store, I stated my intentions to the captain to spend the night onboard the ship so as to be there when Delgado arrived with the rigs.
Feeling quite virtuous, I left the group to their celebrations and headed to the ship. Requiem hadn't even removed her stage makeup when I departed. That's how focused I was about the next day's task.
(Reading over these words, they sound defensive. I guess I am defensive. All that has happened was both my fault and NOT my fault. How was I to know that Delgado would decide to arrive 10 hours early to install the rigs? But I should have thought to alert EDI. I should have thought about Screeech's love of eating new things. But I expected Gakk Delgado to be true to his word and arrive in the morning, not 10 hours early! See? Not my fault.)
I was almost to the ship when EDI comms'd me. "Dr. Quinn, a W'uther arrived with an unexpected delivery. I let him aboard with the goods of course, but Screeech attacked him and has begun eating one of the crates. You should return at once."
"What? He-- What? I'm almost there."
I ran the rest of the way to the ship. As I turned the corner I saw Delgado leaning against the hull of the ship, holding one arm. Blood dripped through his fingers and to the floor.
"Your dog is pretty mean," he said.
"What are you doing here? You're supposed to come in the morning."
"I wanted to surprise you. Are you surprised? My girlfriend, she's out of town, so I had time to come tonight and do the install." He lifted his bloody arm. "I'm a black belt, like I'm a dangerous, dangerous guy in a fight, but your dog lunged at me when I wasn't looking, you know? And my sensei, he is always telling me to be careful when I have to fight because I could kill someone. Kill someone with my bare hands."
(I should pause here to say that Gakk Delgado is one of the strangest people I have met in my short time alive. He is socially awkward, talkative, and unbelievably confident.)
"I'm a medical doctor," I said. "Let me take a look at your arm." Within seconds I had healed the long gash that went from elbow to wrist. Well do I know the damage that Screeech can do to flesh and metal alike.
"I thought about being a doctor," he said as he watched me tuck away my Dark Matter core. "I thought about it. Like, doctor or roboticist or jujitsu master, right? But then I thought I can do all three. They wanted me to join the Whel-Devon dojo - the most famous dojo in the galaxy? But I said, 'I need to focus on my business degree first.' That's why I'm at Tech Tree, you know."
Delgado flexed his hand. "Your dog is pretty mean. Dogs love me usually. My girlfriend wants to get a dog. We live together you know. But she's visiting her cousin right now. She wants a dog, but I can't decide which kind. You know the dog whisperer? We went to school together and I'm the one who--"
"Stop talking," I said. "Stop. Talking."
I palmed the air lock to open the ship's door just as EDI said, "Doctor, I fear that Screeech will do irreparable damage to one of the units if you--"
"I here," I said aloud. "I'm here."
Screeech paused his destruction long enough to say, "Good surprise for Screeech. Crunchy. Squishy."
Just then one of the gel bags popped and purple stasis gel oozed to the floor. "Screeech!" I yelled. "Those aren't for you! They are supposed to be installed in the ship."
"For ship?" Screeech tilted his head as if puzzled. "Surprise snack for me."
"Not a snack, not a surprise. They're for the ship."
"Squishy man," Screeech pointed a claw at Delgado, "said it was a surprise."
"He was wrong," I said. "Please stop eating it. These rigs are for the ship."
With that Screeech climbed to the top of the half-damaged crate and then crawled across the ceiling. "I no eat ship."
"That's right! Thank you." I turned to Delgado and said, "Now what do we do?"
"If you'd bought the warranty, like I said you should, this would be fine."
The door opened, and the captain strode in. She took one look at the damaged crate and said, "Quinn, with me."
We went to my workbench - what I had, until this moment, considered my workbench - and Cosmic Peanut said, "Here's how we're gonna play this. You go in and tell him that I'm mad - hopping mad - and if he doesn't replace that eaten rig with the floor model at the store - for free - that I'm going to fire you. Got it? Your job is on the line."
"Is my job on the line? He was supposed to deliver the units in the morning! How could I know--"
"Quinn. Quinn. Calm down. This is the play, right? It's leverage. Tug on his heartstrings. You got this. I'm mad as hell, and your job is on the line. Go!"
I walked into the cargo area where Delgado was installing the first rig. "Um. The captain is really mad at me. And you! She's really, really mad at you."
He paused in his work. "Does she have a boyfriend? She's awfully cute." He looked down at the wrench in his hand. "I don't really have a girlfriend. Not right now. But that cute Glabrau, she could be my girlfriend. Will you ask her to have dinner with me? I'm like a world class chef, so she could--"
"Stop talking!" My voice had an edge of hysteria. "This is a huge mess! And I might lose my job. You don't want that, do you?"
"Your dog--"
"You, Delgado, came early. This is your fault. You gotta replace that damaged unit with the floor model. Please."
"If you'd bought the warranty...."
I crossed my arms. "I didn't want to do this, but you left me no choice. I want to speak to your manager."
Delgado's face fell, and his eyestalk drooped. "He doesn't like getting late night calls."
"I don't care."
"OK." Delgado reached into his toolkit and pulled out a bright green cap. Stitched across the front was the word "Supervisor." He put it on his head. "If you'd bought the warranty, I--"
"You listen to me." I stuck my finger in his face just as Cosmic Peanut tapped my shoulder.
"Quinn, hit the showers."
"But I don't require...." The words died in my throat as I met her eyes. I had failed, and who knew what might happen now.
I hurried to the workbench and heard Cosmic Peanut say, "Hi Gakkie. Look, I know this wasn't your fault. You showed amazing initiative." She stepped closer to him. "Amazing."
"Your friend was mean to me. It made me sad." His eye blinked at the captain.
I looked down at the workbench. I would miss it. I set the two plasma grenades to the side. Esmae might find a use for them. I put a small note on the machine gun. Merrin should have it. I transferred the 41 credits to a stik and put Requiem's name on it. I would leave Malaka beholden to no one.
In the cargo hold Cosmic Peanut said, "I'm sorry. I kind of lost my cool, and that made Quinn a little freaked out. I can't afford another rig right now. I need this one replaced. I need you.... to replace it. Gakkie."
"I'm almost done getting this second rig installed." He gripped his wrench. "I know I can get you a 10% discount on the floor model. That's the last one on the station. That's a good deal." He turned back to his work.
"I can't afford another rig," Cosmic Peanut raised her voice over the clanks of his wrench. "But I can afford a drink. What do you say? I heard you ask Quinn to ask me out." She leaned near him. "The feeling is mutual."
"We'll have that drink as soon as I'm done."
"And we can get that floor model as a replacement..... Right?" She leaned toward him again.
"I can get you the 10% off. I didn't chew up the crate, you know."
At that, the captain began cry. First she put her head in her paws and sobbed, but within moments she was weeping openly, her shoulders heaving. "This is terrible!" she cried. "It's a huge, huge mess!" Her sobbing grew.
"It was....." Delgado swallowed. "It was defective when it got here. Defective. I'm sorry. Please don't cry." He gulped for air. "No one’s fault. We'll get that floor model."
The captain continued crying.
He patted her shoulder. "Don't cry. Don't. Don't." A tear fell from his eye. "No charge. We'll get that floor model. No charge."

What Are The Hazards Of A Swimming Pool?
With summertime in full swing, the swimming pool becomes one of the most popular areas to be in your backyard during the hot days of June, July and August. However, it can also become one of the most hazardous places to be if you’re not careful about keeping it clean and properly maintained. Whether you have a plastic, vinyl-lined or concrete pool, all pools have some common dangers that you should know about before jumping into your water this summer.
Important Swimming Pool Safety Tips for Families
Are you ready to cool down this summer? A visit to a swimming pool is a popular summer event. If you have access to an indoor pool or if you live in a warmer region you may be able to visit a pool throughout the year. Pools are also common features of hotels, cruise ships, resorts, and fitness centers.
But while swimming pools are high on the fun meter, they are also an environment where adults and children should exercise caution. According to the Pool Safety Foundation, swimming pool dangers can include injuries from slips and falls or malfunctioning equipment. Drowning is, of course, another concern. To keep yourself and your family safe, get the facts about swimming pool safety to help minimize risks and still have a splashing good time.
Essential Swimming Pool Safety Tips
Summer fun and swimming pools go hand-in-hand, especially if you are safe in the water and take proper precautions. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes (CPSC) that fatal and nonfatal swimming-related injuries remain high as of 2022, so “water safety vigilance is as important as ever” to keep yourself and your children safe and happy.
Prevent Drowning
When you think of dangers in the water, drowning is probably the first to come to your mind, with an average of 389 drowning incidents a year, according to the CPSC. But drowning can be very preventable with proper precautions. You can minimize the risk of drowning by following a few tips from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Always supervise children while the pool is being used.
Arrange swimming lessons for everyone who will use the pool.
Be aware of the pool depth and follow “no diving” restrictions in shallow pools.
Install pool safety fences and covers to limit pool access.
Keep lifesaving equipment, and floatation devices, close to the pool at all times.
Learn CPR and other life-saving techniques.
Make children wear life jackets.
Stress proper pool behavior and limit horseplay.
Use the buddy system.
Watch for Water Quality
Germs are everywhere. While you can try to get rid of the microscopic dangers with proper chemicals and filtering, sometimes they can cause issues. Many types of bacteria can survive in swimming pools, circulating among the swimmers. So the CDC offers a few tips to keep swimming-related illnesses from affecting you, your family, and others who are using the pool.
Do not allow children to wear diapers when using the pool unless they are wearing swim diapers.
Keep pets out of the pool.
Keep the pool water properly filtered and chemically treated at all times.
Keep water out of your mouth and dry ears.
Refrain from using a pool if you are sick or have an open wound.
Rinse off before and after entering the pool.
Remember, if in doubt, just stay out of the swimming pool. Pools that look questionable might not be worth it.
Avoid High Concentration Chemical Exposure
Pool chemicals are a must, right? It’s one of the key factors for keeping those nasty bacteria at bay. However, chemicals in high concentrations can pose a safety issue to swimmers. So, it’s all about balance.
Chlorine, for example, can dry and irritate the skin and aggravate asthma. These chemicals can also kill the body’s naturally beneficial bacteria if water is swallowed, potentially causing digestive problems and lowered immunity. To avoid the chemical contamination dangers of swimming pools, the National Capital Poison Center offers a few tips.
Always wear safety equipment when handling chemicals.
Do not increase chemical treatments to compensate for a dirty pool.
Ensure proper ventilation.
Follow instructions carefully when treating a pool.
Keep chemical treatments at the proper level using testing kits.
Keep pool chemicals properly stored and out of reach of children to avoid accidental poisonings.
Store chemicals in a cool, dry place to avoid landscape contamination or risk of fire.
Eliminate Electric Shock Dangers
Electricity is a hidden danger of pools that you might not consider. And in truth, the risk is very low. The CPSC only notes 33 fatalities from 2002 to 2018 due to pools and electricity. But it’s still important to take necessary precautions. To avoid the risk of electrical shock in swimming pools, the CPSC provided a few important tips.
Do not keep ungrounded electrical equipment – stereos, grills, lawn equipment, etc. – near the pool.
Use only ground circuit fault interrupter (GCFI) outlets in the pool area.
Stay out of the pool during lightning storms.
Do not install pools near power lines.
Make use of battery-operated products.
Check underwater lights regularly.
Don’t touch electrical products when wet.
Take Care With Food and Drinks
Pools are a central entertainment area of summer get-togethers. Snacks by the pool is as much of a summer tradition as swimming itself. Keep these points in mind when having a summer get-together that includes food or drinks.
Do not drink alcohol or do drugs when swimming because it can impair the ability to judge distances as well as the physical coordination necessary to swim, states the CDC.
Do not use glass containers or sharp utensils in the pool area, according to DC Parks and Recreation.
Keep food out of the pool to avoid overtaxing the filtration system.
Prevent Sunburn
On a nice sunny day, there is nothing better than throwing on your suit and hitting the pool. But you don’t want to forget about the sun when it comes to your pool fun.
Individuals who spend a lot of time at the swimming pool frequently develop golden tans, but at the same time, overexposure to the sun’s radiation increases the risks of skin cancer. Furthermore, sunburns can be painful and can create open sores and blisters that can become infected. If you don’t want to get out of the pool, you can reduce the sun’s risks with a few precautions listed by the Skin Cancer Foundation.
Apply water-resistant sunscreen every two hours while using the pool.
Avoid staying in the sun in the late morning and afternoon hours when the sun’s rays are strongest.
Stay in shaded lounging areas when not in the pool.
Wear a swimsuit cover-up to limit the amount of exposed skin.
Use Care With Pool Toys
From water guns and inflatable lounges to buoys and basketball hoops, pool toys offer hours of fun entertainment for swimmers. Everyone loves to join in a good water gun fight!
Pool toy and floaties risks are one of those hidden dangers you don’t want to forget when spending the day in the pool. To keep your water gun fun safe, check out a few of the tips offered by The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Check for damage and recalls.
Check weight recommendations.
Ensure proper fit of floaties or water wings.
Follow assembly instructions.
Pool toys, including water wings, are not meant to be used as lifesaving devices and are not substitutes for life jackets.
Store toys away from the pool area when not in use.
Supervise children with toys at all times.
Use only toys designed for use in swimming pools.
Safety Tips for Inflatable Pools and Fun Centers
Inflatables are on the rise. You just blow them up, and you have slides, bouncing, and swimming fun. Inflatable pools, fun centers, and plastic pools are also great for little ones that aren’t perfect swimmers.
But small inflatable and plastic pools have their own set of risks that parents should be aware of. These inflatable pools can become lopsided and unbalanced. They can also become contaminated because they are filled with hose water. Furthermore, inflatable pools can collapse or blow away in severe weather. Keep any potential risks with floaties and inflatables at bay by trying out these tips from the CDC.
Anchor the pool securely in a flat, stable location to prevent tips.
Disinfect pools as needed.
Do not exceed the recommended weight and other use tolerances for the pool.
Drain the pool daily to avoid contamination from standing water.
Inspect the pool regularly for weak points, tears, or punctures.
Remove debris and allow the pool to air dry.
There are many different swimming pool dangers that swimmers face regularly, but with proper precautions and common sense, many risks can be minimized while still maximizing the enjoyment of a fun day at the pool.

Power Pest Control Redcliffe
Tumblr media
Termites are incredibly destructive pests. They eat away at timber structures, causing structural damage and creating a potential health hazard for your family.
Regular termite inspections are vital to keeping these slow moving wood-eating pests at bay. Termite inspections are performed by trained professionals using specialised equipment to locate and identify termite infestations. To know more about Power Pest Control Redcliffe, visit the Bug Out Pest Solutions website or call 0426263320.
A reliable pre-purchase termite inspection is essential when purchasing any property in Redcliffe and North Brisbane. A thorough inspection will reveal any termite activity and allow you to take the necessary action to protect your investment.
Soil-applied barrier treatments such as Termidor are a great preventative measure. When termites pass through the treated soil on their way home, they are killed.
Brisbane’s warm, humid climate makes it easy for cockroaches to thrive. They enter homes and business through air ducts, cracks in walls, crevices, utility entry points and sewer connections. They are often found in kitchens and laundry rooms.
Outdoors, cockroaches can be found in rotting tree branches, leaf litter, tool sheds and piles of firewood. They can also hide in the soil under plants and soffits.
To reduce cockroach numbers, use glue traps along baseboards, under sinks and in bathrooms. You can also apply D-Fense Dust in a duster, puffing it into wall voids, behind electrical outlets and near plumbing connections. This product is a synthetic pyrethroid and works by interfering with nerve signals.
Ants are one of the most common pests in and around homes. They are opportunistic and will enter your home looking for food, water or shelter.
They love rotting logs and tend to nest in these, however they can also forage into gardens where they may disturb flower beds. They are a nuisance in many homes and contribute to structural wood damage.
Keeping rubbish bins emptied, wiping up liquid foods and not leaving pet food out if possible will help reduce ants in your property. Our KM Ant Pro dispenser uses non-repellent sprays to control ants, they are low in toxicity and contain boron which stops the ant’s digestive system.
Rodents are notorious for wriggling into your home or business through the tiniest of openings. This allows them to nestle in secluded spaces such as ceiling cavities or attics and cause severe damage.
They are also a health risk as their droppings can spread the potentially lethal Hantavirus which manifests with flu-like symptoms and may progress to respiratory issues. They can also chew through electrical wires causing fire hazards.
To prevent an infestation, regularly sweep and vacuum the area to remove food scraps, pet bedding, leaves, and other rodent debris. Also install door sweeps and repair cracks, screens vents and chimneys. Consider installing a mouse trap baited with peanut butter.
Mosquito control is a key element in protecting the public from mosquito-borne diseases, like West Nile virus. It involves four components: source reduction, larval control, adulticiding and biological control.
Eliminate standing water in old tires, flower pots, children’s toys and other containers where mosquitoes breed. Change out bird baths, wading pools and rain barrel water weekly, and keep swimming pool water treated and circulating.
Use a larvicide, such as Bti, in artificial ponds and in uncovered rain barrels to eliminate mosquito larvae. Another larval control product is methoprene, an insect growth regulator that disrupts a mosquito’s life cycle. This is a safer alternative to Bti.
If you’re plagued with Bed Bugs in your home, a professional pest control company can help. These tiny ecto-parasites interrupt sleep, tarnish bedding and cause skin problems. They’re difficult to kill and spread quickly without professional assistance. To know more about Power Pest Control Redcliffe, visit the Bug Out Pest Solutions website or call 0426263320.
Vacuum and wash all fabrics in the affected room frequently to limit their spread. Double bag items that can’t be washed, and seal them in plastic bags until they can be properly treated or discarded. Use a crack and crevice treatment on baseboards, moldings, behind pictures, doors and window frames and along carpet edges.

Unveiling the Lush Green World of Turf: A Comprehensive G
Turf, often referred to as sod or grass, is more than just a green carpet covering lawns, fields, and sports stadiums. It's a vital component of landscapes, offering beauty, functionality, and environmental benefits. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the world of turf, exploring its types, benefits, installation, maintenance, and much more.
Understanding Turf: Types and Varieties
Turf comes in various types, each tailored to specific needs and climates. From cool-season to warm-season grasses, the options are diverse. Cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass thrive in cooler climates, while warm-season grasses such as Bermuda grass, Zoysia grass, and St. Augustine grass are suited for warmer regions.
Benefits of Turf
Turf offers a multitude of benefits, making it an integral part of landscaping and outdoor spaces.
1. Aesthetic Appeal: One of the primary reasons for installing turf is its visual appeal. A lush green lawn enhances the beauty of residential yards, parks, and commercial landscapes, creating a welcoming ambiance.
2. Soil Erosion Control: Turf plays a crucial role in preventing soil erosion. Its dense root system holds soil in place, reducing the risk of erosion caused by wind or water runoff.
3. Improved Air Quality: Turf grasses act as natural air filters, trapping dust, pollutants, and airborne allergens, thereby improving air quality.
4. Temperature Regulation: Lawns covered with turf help regulate temperatures by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it slowly at night, thus creating a cooler microclimate.
5. Noise Reduction: Turf absorbs sound waves, making it an effective noise insulator. This property is especially beneficial in urban areas where noise pollution is a concern.
Turf Installation: Steps to a Perfect Lawn
Achieving a lush, healthy lawn begins with proper installation. Here's a step-by-step guide to turf installation:
1. Soil Preparation: Start by preparing the soil. Remove any existing vegetation, rocks, and debris. Loosen the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches to ensure proper root development.
2. Grading: Level the ground to promote proper drainage and prevent water pooling. Use a rake or leveling tool to even out the surface.
3. Fertilization: Apply a starter fertilizer rich in phosphorus to promote root growth. Incorporate the fertilizer into the soil according to the manufacturer's instructions.
4. Turf Installation: Lay the turf rolls tightly together, ensuring there are no gaps or overlaps. Stagger the seams like bricks in a wall to create a seamless appearance.
5. Watering: Immediately after installation, water the turf thoroughly to help it establish roots. Keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks until the turf is firmly rooted.
Turf Maintenance: Tips for a Healthy Lawn
Maintaining a vibrant lawn requires regular care and attention. Here are some essential turf maintenance tips:
1. Watering: Water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Early morning is the best time to water, as it reduces water loss due to evaporation.
2. Mowing: Keep turf grasses at an optimal height to promote healthy growth. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade length at a time to prevent stress.
3. Fertilization: Feed your lawn with a balanced fertilizer to replenish nutrients and promote lush growth. Apply fertilizer according to the specific needs of your turf grass type.
4. Weed Control: Keep weeds at bay by regularly inspecting and manually removing them. Use herbicides sparingly and only as necessary to minimize environmental impact.
5. Aerating: Aerating the soil improves air circulation, enhances water absorption, and reduces soil compaction. Perform aeration annually or as needed, especially in high-traffic areas.
Conclusion
Turf is more than just grass; it's a cornerstone of outdoor landscapes, offering beauty, functionality, and environmental benefits. Whether you're creating a backyard oasis or maintaining a sports field, understanding the nuances of turf selection, installation, and maintenance is essential for achieving a vibrant, healthy lawn. By following the guidelines outlined in this comprehensive guide, you can unlock the full potential of turf and enjoy a lush green oasis for years to come.
