My 2023 in fics

Tagged by @billyharringson, thank you, this was a lot of fun!

January: Hot and Cold (or How To Serve Revenge) - a fic I wrote in January (but posted in February, schhhh). Got challenged by @callieb to write hurt/no comfort, and I have it on good authority that I succeeded ... (it has spawned no less than two fix-its and one more continuation by other people so far, which I am awfully pleased about actually)

February: Again and again and again and again, a time loop fic that I love, and would like to read like 80K about. ... yes, read. I don't have time to write more on it now. But I had so much fun writing this, and it is one of my favorite kinds of fics; a short one with potential.

March: March was busy. There was Billy's Birthday Bonanza, and also I wrote for the Billy Hargrove Bingo. I posted a lot of fics then, most of them short. So I'm gonna link two, because I can (and no one told me any rules for this tagging game); Boys, Beards and Best Friends, because it was so much fun writing Billy and Heather being BFFs and also the boys being set up, and then Over the edge, which is one of my favorites, because it was so goddamn fun to write! (Murder mystery prank going wrong, muahahaaa! Don't worry though, no one dies for real.)

April: A piece of meaning on your skin, a little fic I wrote for the Harringrove Flip Reverse It event, about the boys choosing tattoos for each other as a part of a bet. I still think it's cute.

May: I like Flo, okay, and like to incorporate her into fics. In Patience, I wrote about her first impressions of Billy, for the Billy Hargrove Bingo.

June-July: Posted in June, finished posting in July (but written on and off over the course of several years previous ...), Taking Notes is my longest fanfic yet at about 93K. And, listen, I love it. It's a body swap fic, where the boys swap bodies. And then again. And again. Etc. I am so proud of this one, actually.

August: Posted Pal, which is 17K of Billy befriending a stray demodog. I 100% believe Billy would like animals better than most humans, and this fic is basically him being a bit dumb but also a good friend to Pal, the demodog. And then them going into protective mode for each other. I am soft for this one, still.

September: I'm picking a short one that I first posted on tumblr and then onto AO3; Seagulls. It's ... well, it's sad in a way, in that it takes place when Billy's dying at the mall, but it's also comforting in a way, because he gets to leave all that bullshit behind and is greeted by his mom again.

October: Picking Just another night at Motel 6 on Cornwallis, because Billy deserves to get to tell Karen no, and Karen deserves to be shamed for what she did (yes, in this fic she showed up). It was immensely satisfying to write.

November: I didn't get much posted in November (because NaNo), but I did get chapter 3 of Finding Billy posted (it's a finished fic now, though, don't worry). It's a whumpy fic I had to write after a couple of chats with friends, about Billy being held with the Lab people after the whole Starcourt thing, and then Steve and Max and Hop finding out and getting him out of there. Poor boy's been through a lot in this one - but things are getting better, promise!

December: Started posting Home is where the knitted mittens are, which is my latest fic. No ships, no romance. Just Billy finding out he's a werewolf and having to deal with that in Hawkins, Indiana, without much of a safety net. Listen, I'm weak for werewolf Billy, okay? And I made up some werewolf lore in this one which is a mix of all the things I like. (It was literally a reason for me to get to write something "nesting"-adjacent, without having to go into A/B/O-territory.) Definitely written mostly for myself, and I love it dearly. (Featuring werewolf!Scott Clarke too, because why not right??)

Huh, I never thought I'd had enough to fill a whole year's worth, but look at that! I'm proud of myself for this :)

project revive. my self-indulgent korean webfantasy type bullshit project. includes gay people, death not being the end, everyone has a secret, women who can kill you one-handed, curses, and a god king that can't be resurrected at any cost. inspired by tcf and a lot of dramatic villainess comics.

13 houses. formerly referred to as "adigore story" or "vampire sack project". plot is currently getting revamped (hah) but basically a closeted midwestern boy ends up getting pulled into a dangerous conspiracy by a young vampire who doesn't remember why he wants revenge. he seems harmless, he's gentle, and kind, but he's going to do whatever it takes to find out what he lost, and to make the vampires responsible regret that he was brought back as one of them.

project western sun. strange vampire x rookie vampire hunter, set in a sci-fi western where the hunters are cowboys. featuring: family secrets, exploding guts, horses that are hoverbikes, legendary outlaws, power imbalances, anime fight logic and guns that break the laws of physics. inspired by trigun and that one vampire anime until it turned out to be the world's most convoluted incest because we can't have shit in this world. also bonanza and other old westerns i would watch on tv a long time ago.

❖ reoccuring tropes in all my work (aka so common that i didn't feel the need to mention them in these write-ups) include: primary gay/mlm relationships, elements of horror varying from fridge, body, and eldritch, frequently mexican characters/protags who aren't stuck as sidekicks or have roles beyond just being the funny guy, some dramatic ass jrpg bullshit— you bet their asses are gonna kill some gods, the little guy/underdog vs. the world/the system, getting angry about the poverty hole, resorting to violence. and revenge.

Correct me if I'm wrong because I've been forgetting things a lot lately, but...usually, event rerun missions give you gems but with a reduced amount and without the BP coins, right? So, why does the New Year 2023 event rerun give event scout tickets now? We can only get gems from completing the Battle Challenges with (and without) the required criteria and for completing a certain amount of missions?

And Battle Villa is going to be permanent next month, which means no more gems from it anymore?

Reddit has been 60% posts about this exact thing since yesterday. The short is, we don't really know why they made this adjustment, but it's only for the rerun of the seasonal event, not the upcoming VA rerun. It is currently a complete mystery as to why. At a guess, it's the usual gacha methodology of slowly rolling back rewards. One very optimistic soul thinks it might be heralding the inclusion of older seasonal pairs in the ticket scout, but (1) where would the cutoff for that be, and (2) some old seasonals still kick ass while some new seasonals suck, so this isn't really a cohesive option, especially with the whole paid only Mix Red scout going on where you can pity anyone ever. That's supposed to be a big draw; would take it away if you could ticket scout them. So in short...yes it's like that, no it's not normal, but it might be how all seasonal reruns are from here on. I'd be less bothered if they reran all past seasonal events and did something like this because it'd be a net increase in reward without seriously skewing gem counts, but no dice.

The Villa situation is nebulous, but yes it is permanent next month, which I'm 100% certain means its rewards will no longer be available. It is a point of very severe contention in my mind, because they're replacing what Villa had with this new mode, which creates two very major problems. First, the new mode must, by necessity, include the same kind of rewards as Villa. What I mean is, Villa was the only remaining place to get Lucky Scrolls. Blissful Bonanza was as good as dead for four months, we can't count on that. It's also the only place to get 2* cookies. For most, this doesn't matter, but it does for Crunchy with the Defense Crush 2, Fast-Track 2, etc options. It's also the only meaningful way to get Lessen Confusion 9 for base Iris, which yes is important. We can't just replace all cookie output with Gauntlet; those options wouldn't exist. Well. Okay, Defense Crush would, it's in the deluxe 1* cookie bin. But you get the idea. This means all rewards must map perfectly, or we're losing significant tools, especially if the lucky scrolls go away. New players would effectively have no means of acquiring lucky skills anymore. Regardless, I'm willing to bet it's less gems in total for the event.

The second, potentially worse aspect, is that this game operates on point scores, which are augmented by how many of a particular role you bring, and EX roles count. Their stingy-ass bullshit decision to not give EX roles to any older pairs except a handful of Master Fairs suddenly makes sense, as it means this mode has an element of pay to win. The game's generally been good about "all meaningful rewards are easily obtained, but if you want to play rank pay up," but this is becoming more and more frequent, to the detriment of the overall experience. Like sure, great, glad we can't give Drasna an EX role, but we can let Ryuki have one. Bullshit.

Tuvok and Seven should have solved the Pon Farr together

Okay, yes, I realize that Tuvok is totally devoted to his wife, but think about it. His wife had to have had someone else to get through the Pon Farr too, right? Like a discreet neighbor or something. It's Vulcan. I mean, why wouldn't they have some sort of arrangement?

But clearly Tuvok hasn't thought of anything cause he's like, nah, I can just meditate this crap away which uh no dude, you cannot, how old are you anyway? Packing all that emotion, rage, etc. that Vulcans actually have in abundance rather than less of is gonna make anyone explode unless dealt with (which is also why Janeway and Chakotay would have exploded from the sexual tension by like season 4 at least.) So what can Tuvok do?

Using the Holodeck is a total copout, in my opinion. That's like saying all Vulcans have had to do this whole time when separated from their mates was keep a dirty magazine hidden under their mattress. I just don't think so. This is like his wife - you aren't gonna fool Tuvok with a picture of her, guy's been married for decades. He's got her down and you can bet he remembers every seven years' bonanza cause come on.

Here's where Seven comes in. Tuvok and Seven GET each other. They're stranded together with a bunch of overacting illogical beings that never listen to them and thus constantly run into trouble that could have been prevented had they just listened to Tuvok or Seven. They know this. Ultimately, they have to go along with everything, but that doesn't stop them being sarcastic as hell about it. I bet they got together for some tea every once in a while and spilled that tea like mad, making fun of the rest of Voyager until they'd snarked themselves senseless.

Another thing they have in common - the total practicality. Seven wants to experience everything, but she's not going to just fall in love with anybody (especially not somebody random but we won't get into that). No, if Harry had gone along with her it would have been a one nighter, and she'd have left like "That will be all, Harry". Which would have hurt Harry but -

Not Tuvok. No, this would be perfect for him. He'd get the necessities out of the way, and she'd get her experience, and then they'd just walk away and never, ever mention it to themselves or anyone else and been completely fine with it. Just carried on their friendship as usual.

I realize this was network T.V., blah blah (though look at what they DID get away with, just think about it) but I think it'd be absolutely perfect. Tuvok & Seven besties till the end.

They would never, ever tell and the thought is so awesome.

Alternate solution: Tuvok could have killed Neelix. You know he wanted to do it. Look how happy he was to murder him in the Holodeck! And all he'd get would be confinement to his quarters where he could be alone and do science projects. No problem!

mmmm here's the beginning of my flurry of WIP snippets for @littlestsnicket. My WIP-a-palooza and crossposting bonanza. Say that 5 times fast. Ficlet is from my Jaskier/Oxenfurt series that takes place between season 1 and 2. This scene is the first time Jaskier meets a small acolyte from the Eternal Fire (who will also be making an appearance in the puppetskier story as well). Warnings for child indoctrination and implied child abuse, canon-typical racism.

“You live in a den of equity!” a tiny voice heckled and Jaskier rounded on a heel and turned to peer at the small child. He was dressed in a grey smock that was stained with mud at the hem but otherwise appeared immaculate, which was impressive considering it was on the body of someone who couldn’t be more than 10 years old. Dark brown eyes simmered with anger and looked surprised that Jaskier had stopped to face him. The child must have gotten used to being ignored already but was still out here, harassing all nonhumans coming and going from the university grounds. He didn’t remember when the Eternal Fire had managed to get a toehold in Oxenfurt but there’d been enough upheaval recently that Jaskier wasn’t that surprised.

Jaskier looked at the sun, judging the amount of time he had left before he ought to swing down the docks and check in with the harbormaster’s assistant. He looked back at the child and then scanned the rest of the street, not finding any rheumy-eyed clerics nearby.

“Well, aren’t you a plucky little hatemonger,” Jaskier said, his annoyance fretted with a quiet despair when the child’s posture stiffened. The child’s head was nearly shaved down to the scalp and he had a wide, flat nose was wide and had a chin that would probably grow to be very strong and punchable if he continued on his current path.
