Two tributes to Bud Powell; the first is Thelonious Monk’s ‘In Walked Bud’, which is a classic, and the second is Kyle Gann’s ‘Bud Ran Back Out’, a tribute to both of the above in a post-Nancarrow style for the Disklavier (a kind of computer controlled player piano, wink wink, score here)

Another random record shelf pull to quiet down the night…
Bud Powell “A Portrait Of Thelonious” 1961/1965/1980 Columbia
Whenever I buy a Thelonious Monk album I feel the need to buy a Bud Powell album because to me they are the two sides to a coin. Can’t have one without the other. Early in their careers Bud stopped a police beat down on Thelonious and took it himself supposedly sustaining permanent damage. Later on Thelonious a drug rap for Bud causing his career to (temporarily) stall. So it’s appropriate that there’s an album of Bud focusing on Thelonious’s songs. Bud has slowed at this point but is still enjoyable to listen to.
