Released shortly after Jackson's breakthrough debut, Look Sharp!, I'm the Man saw Jackson continue the style of his earlier album. Singles from the album included "I'm the Man" and "It's Different for Girls", the latter of which was his biggest UK chart single, peaking at number five on the UK Singles Chart. On the album cover, Jackson appears in the guise of a particular type of petty criminal known in the United Kingdom as a spiv, a character who, in Jackson's own words, "always wears a gross polka-dot tie and a pencil-thin mustache, and he's always trying to sell you a watch or something like that real cheap. I think people always want to put a label on what you do, so I thought I'd be one step ahead of them and invent one myself - spiv rock." The album was quickly recorded to follow-up Jackson's successful debut album Look Sharp!. In the late 1800s, the Thorens company in Switzerland began making music boxes. Their quality and design was top of the line. Around 1920, the company designed and manufactured some very interesting pocket lighters with a push button semi-automatic mechanism. They became highly sought after in the world of high end lighters.

In the early days, Thorens made a few styles including the highly collectible single and double claw designs with evolving styles of push button triggers. I’ve owned at least 10 of them and they’re one of my absolute favorite designs.

Yesterday I picked up a late 1920s double claw table lighter with a glass paperweight base. Because the mechanism is very intricate, buying them online can be scary. Repairs are challenging and a few times I’ve disassembled the guts only to be left with a bag of parts and hours of frustration.

Thankfully, this one worked perfectly after less than an hour of fiddling with the flint (it sits under a finicky spring arm that’s a pain to work with) and fishing out the wick that had retreated back into the lighter. Then I had to consult some Thorens OGs to determine where the fluid goes. There are two little swing arm caps on the top of the lighter base. I learned one is for fuel (so I added more cotton wadding) and the other is to be left empty for storing extra flints.

I removed the lighter part from the paperweight and gave it a good clean up. The lighter appears brass, which is odd because the pocket lighters are chrome plated, but perhaps it’s just very well worn and the chrome is gone. I’ll look into that.

But now, it works like a charm! Check it out. If you have an opportunity to pick up a semi-automatic single or double claw Thorens, I suggest going for it. They’re one of the coolest old lighter styles. Thorens ventured into flip top Windproof lighters and other types into the 40s 50s and 60s but they really can’t match the 1920s styles, in my opinion.

No Parlez is the debut solo studio album by English singer Paul Young. Released in 1983, it reached number one on the UK Albums Chart (for a non-consecutive total of 5 weeks) and remained in the UK Top 100 for 119 weeks. The album has been certified quadruple platinum by the BPI for UK sales in excess of 1.2 million copies. The album featured eight cover versions alongside two tracks written by Young and keyboard player Ian Kewley and one written by the guitarist in Young's band at the time, Steve Bolton. Three of the cover versions were written by Jack Lee. Initially, the first two singles, "Iron Out the Rough Spots" and a remake of "Love of the Common People", had no success, but the third, a cover of the Marvin Gaye classic "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)", was No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in July and August 1983, and the first of Young's 14 British Top 40 singles. Similar success followed in continental Europe.
