What is FEMA Assistance?
Tumblr media
FEMA Individual Assistance helps disaster survivors begin recovery by providing grants for basic, critical needs. What is FEMA Assistance? FEMA assistance is not a substitute for insurance, nor can it duplicate other sources of assistance. How Can I Apply for FEMA Assistance? Go online to DisasterAssistance.gov, download the FEMA App for mobile devices, or call toll-free 800-621-3362. The line is open every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET. Help is available in most languages. If you use a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service, or others, give FEMA your number for that service. To view an accessible video on how to apply visit Three Ways to Register for FEMA Disaster Assistance - YouTube. - Hernando County’s FEMA Disaster Recovery Center is open 9:00 am – 7:00 pm - Seven days a week, until further notice - Spring Hill Library – 9220 Spring Hill Blvd., Spring Hill, FL 34608 What assistance does FEMA provide? - Lodging Expense Reimbursement for hotel expenses; this is for uninsured or underinsured applicants who could not return to their home due to hurricane-related damage. Keep copies of receipts. - Home Repair/Replacement Assistance for disaster losses not already covered by another source. - Rental Assistance for alternative housing if you can no longer occupy your primary residence due to disaster-related damage. - Funeral Assistance related to a death attributed directly or indirectly as a result of the hurricane. - Medical and Dental Assistance for uninsured medical and dental needs or losses caused by Hurricane Idalia. To be considered for the following types of assistance, if you received a referral to apply for an SBA Disaster Loan, you must have submitted the application and received a denial. - Personal Property Assistance to repair or replace essential, uninsured personal property damaged by Hurricane Idalia. - Transportation Assistance for primary vehicles damaged by the disaster. What can lead to an “ineligible” determination? You may need to submit additional information so that FEMA can continue processing your application. For example: - Proof of insurance coverage (Declaration Page) - Copy of your insurance settlement about damage caused by Hurricane Idalia. - Proof of identity (U.S. passport, military I.D., motor vehicle registration, Social Security card along with a federal or state I.D., a payroll stub that shows all or part of your Social Security number.) - Proof of occupancy (lease or rental agreement, rent receipts, utility bills, motor vehicle registration, etc.) FEMA has provided more ways to meet this requirement. - Proof of ownership (deed or title, mortgage documentation, homeowner’s insurance policy, property tax bill or receipt, manufactured home certificate or title, and home purchase contracts. FEMA has provided more ways to meet this requirement. - Proof the damaged property was your primary residence when the disaster occurred. If you have questions about   FEMA’s determination letter,   you may go online to DisasterAssistance.gov or call the Disaster Assistance Helpline at 800-621-3362. What does a FEMA inspector look for? A FEMA inspection may be required to determine whether a home is safe, accessible and functional. FEMA considers the following factors when determining if an applicant is eligible for assistance: - Is the exterior of the home structurally sound, including the doors, roof and windows? - Does the electricity, gas, heat, plumbing, sewer and septic system function properly? - Is the inside of the house habitable and structurally sound, including the ceiling and floors? - Is the home capable of being used for its intended purpose? - Is there a safe access to and from the home? In many cases, disaster-related damage may exist, yet the residents can still safely live in their home. Why did my neighbor get more grant money than I received for repairs? Each case is unique. There are several factors involved, including insurance status and the extent and type of damage documented. I can’t rebuild my house with the money FEMA is offering me. FEMA assistance provides funds for basic work to make a home safe and habitable; However, if the funds provided are insufficient to make your home safe and habitable you have the right to appeal. (See, what happens if I disagree with FEMA's decision below.) I’m a renter. Do I qualify for FEMA assistance? Renters whose property was destroyed or damaged by Hurricane Idalia may be eligible to apply for federal assistance. - FEMA grants can help pay for temporary housing. - Renters may also qualify for grants to replace or repair personal property such as furniture, appliances, clothing, textbooks, or school supplies; replacement or repair of tools and other job-related equipment required by the self-employed; primary vehicles; uninsured or out-of-pocket medical, dental, childcare, moving and storage expenses. Can my household apply for FEMA assistance if I am not a U.S. citizen? To qualify for FEMA assistance, you or a member of your household must be a U.S. citizen, non-U.S. citizen national or qualified alien. However, undocumented families with diverse immigration status only need one family member (including a minor child) who is a United States citizen, non- U.S. citizen national, or qualified alien and has a Social Security number to apply. A qualified alien includes the following: -  Legal permanent resident (“green card” holder) - An asylee, refugee, or an alien whose deportation is being withheld - Alien paroled into the U.S. for at least one year - Alien granted conditional entry (per law in effect before April 1, 1980) - Cuban/Haitian entrant - Certain aliens subjected to extreme cruelty or who have been a victim of a severe form of human trafficking, including persons with a “T” or “U” visa. Adults who don’t qualify under one of the categories above, including the undocumented, can apply on behalf of a minor child who does qualify and has a Social Security number. A minor child must live with the parent or guardian applying on their behalf. The parent or guardian will not have to provide any information on their immigration status or sign any documents regarding their status. What happens if I disagree with FEMA’s decision? Every applicant has the right to appeal a FEMA determination. For example, if you feel the amount or type of assistance is incorrect, you may submit an appeal letter and any documents needed to support your claim, such as a contractor’s estimate for home repairs. FEMA cannot duplicate assistance provided to you by another source, such as insurance settlements or another program. However, if you are underinsured you may receive further assistance for unmet needs after insurance claims have been settled by submitting a copy of the insurance settlement or denial documents to FEMA. How can I appeal? You must file your appeal in writing to FEMA. In a signed and dated letter, you must explain the reason(s) for your appeal. Your appeal letter should also include: - Your Full Name - Disaster number (DR-4734) - Address of the pre-disaster primary residence - Your current phone number and address - Your FEMA registration number on each page of your documentation If someone other than you or a co-applicant is writing your letter, that person must sign the appeal letter, and you must provide FEMA with a signed statement authorizing the individual to act on your behalf. Your letter must be postmarked within 60 days of the date on your determination letter. Appeal letters and supporting documents may be submitted to FEMA by bringing them to a disaster recovery center, by fax or mail, or online if you have a FEMA online account. To set up a FEMA online account, visit DisasterAssistance.gov, click on “Apply Online” and follow the directions. By mail: FEMA National Processing Service Center, P.O. Box 10055, Hyattsville, MD 20782-7055 By fax: 800-827-8112, Attention: FEMA For more information, please use the following links: - Frequently Asked Questions About Disasters | FEMA.gov - Common Disaster-Related Rumors | FEMA.gov Read the full article

Sierra Leone: My Steps Towards (2nd) Citizenship In Africa
Note: This post was originally created on March 9 of 2021 in Medium.
While I have covered this previously in prior posts (update: also see this link), I thought I would create a simple/single post that I can refer people to when they ask me in real life (over digital platforms) how they can obtain citizenship with an African nation (in my case Sierra Leone).
I am going to present the options I am/will choose (I have yet to gain citizenship), as well as alternatives for those who seek other options.
Video & audio options below (for those who prefer).
vimeo
Get excited about Africa! Watching Black Panther inspired me (Coming 2 America could be your reason).
Take a DNA test to determine tribal roots. I used African Ancestry, but there are alternatives like Living DNA that can identify tribes as well (note: the latter can identify fewer tribes)
Buy some African jewelry! It might seem trivial, but wearing jewelry can remind you daily of your roots as well as inspire you. I purchased my African Heirloom Pendant from African Ancestry, the Wakanda Necklace from Douriean Fletcher & the ring from Custom Made.
Obtain a background check (Federal & State). Identogo is a great option, although you can also contact the FBI & local (friendly) police department in your area too.
Obtain two notarize references (employer, bank, politician, lawyer, etcetera).
Use a tour operator. I am using Visit Sierra Leone but Tourism Is Life is another option too. Here are some more options as well.
Get a plane ticket. You can use Airfordable to make layaway payments on your ticket. LayAway Tickets is also another good option.
Use Airbnb to inexpensively pay for a hotel. You can also use Booking.com or let your tour company select an option.
These next options I forgot to mention in the video/audio above.
Use Passport Health USA to find the appropriate vaccines for Sierra Leone.
For health/security insurance, use Global Rescue.
Use Bivy Stick which is an inexpensive satellite phone.
For more information about citizenship in Sierra Leone, visit the Monuments & Relics Commission website, AND be sure to read their guidelines & documents (PDF) page which lists the necessary criteria for becoming a citizen (most of which was covered above).

I must say I love it when life just kicks you in the face.
I’ve felt I should give you guys an explanation about what has been going on in my life to justify my delays for a while and, after what happened today, I definitely want to say it. I won’t lie; part of it is me selfishly wanting to get it out of my system.
So, drama under the cut.
As I’ve mentioned before, I am a disabled person. This is not the most important factor in the story, but I feel it’s the linchpin that’s allowed things to reach the current situation.
I’ve always been an oddball. I’m not saying this as some form of self-deprecation, but a fact. I am disabled, but my eyes can’t remain properly focused for long, which I’ve been informed is creepy; I have trouble reading body language and understanding certain tones of voice (I had to figure out and teach myself sarcasm when I was 12 because I just didn’t get it); I am above average in intelligence, raised by parents who believe knowledge is important and somehow relevant in defining a person’s values; I am a nerd, was a nerd in a time before manga and other such things began to leak into mainstream; I am an introvert, and generally speak in a low voice unless I am very comfortable with the people I’m with; I am also exceedingly enthusiastic when dealing with a topic I am passionate about, to the point of being obnoxious and not knowing when to shut up.
All of the above, combined, meant it was very difficult for me to make friends, and when I did, it also meant I was easy to dislike by anyone new and would miss the signs that things were amiss until it was too late. Due to a series of circumstances that are irrelevant now, by the time I was 19, I had one single friend, no prospects of a future, and was struggling with university because putting that much effort into something you see no point in is frankly difficult. I veered into suicidal ideation a few times out of sheer apathy.
This situation, sans the depression, was something my mother latched onto. She’s a very controlling person, an alcoholic (which she refuses to admit to because she doesn’t do hard drinks, but what else do you call a person who downs three beers on a normal morning and has no trouble drinking an entire bottle of wine the same day while she’s in treatment for heart and blood pressure conditions?), and sadly we have enough in common (like a love of history and cynicism) that she could project onto me easily. She always accepted my brother would one day leave the nest, so to speak, but my lack of any significant relationships meant she could convince herself I would always stay home with her. For years, this belief increased while I sank into a deeper depression. She kept making plans and more plans about things we’d do together once she retired, and I didn’t bother to contradict her because there was nothing else for me. I got to the point of thinking I’d hold on while my parents lived and then just... Well, the idea was to spend whatever money they left me on as long a trip as possible, then down all the meds left in the house.
Then I met Kari, my girlfriend, and we became friends. And I know this will sound cliché as hell, but I slowly started wanting things. Wanting a life, making plans for the future, and generally started to look forward to things. My mother, who is a very observant person, figured out I must’ve met someone. At first she liked the idea, thinking she’d integrate Kari into the fold and I’d have someone to “take care of me” when she was gone. That’s something neither of us would stand for, and my mother started to figure it out. My stress levels skyrocketed shortly after my mother discovered I was in a relationship, because she kept going on and on about all the many ways she could help Kari come over to Spain (she’s from the U.S.) and make room for her at home, help her get started here... because she’s such a great and loving mother. But I couldn’t shut out the caveats I know come with such offers (staying at the family home, letting my mother make all the important decisions for us) and I decided evasion was the best tactic, because I knew no one at home would back me up if I confronted her (I learned this from experience: she rules, she controls everything, and we have to bow our heads and obey).
Things have been growing steadily worse since we were quarantined back in March, and this summer has been positively hellish.
Today she decided she wouldn’t settle for me trying to change the topic, and blew up at me, angry that I keep refusing to accept her offers when “all I ask in exchange is love”. She decided I must not love her, am selfish and my wanting to live up north means I want to flee from her (when I want to move because the climate here is too hot and kills me, and Kari isn’t fond of hot climates either so we’re in agreement), and clearly I intend to take advantage of her and then cut all ties with the family.
So she told me that if I won’t accept her “love” then she wants me out of the house by next August. She gave me August as the deadline because that’s when Kari’s rent contract expires, and also because, I’m pretty sure, she wants me to fret, panic, fail at finding an alternative, and then go back to her begging for her help.
I am looking into alternatives, but there is a problem. Well, several.
To start with, I have never worked before. Why? Because having a disabled daughter living with them gives my parents tax benefits and a bit of extra monthly income, which they’ll lose the moment I start working. So they’ve always discouraged me from finding a job “until I can get something definitive”.
I don’t have a bank account, which is necessary in Spain for pretty much anything, because in this house we’re not allowed to have a bank account that isn’t hers as well.
She has all my legal documents save for my ID. I’ve gotten my hands on a few copies over the years, but she keeps all the originals and everything from my passport to my health insurance card.
I was barely allowed to go out on my own before COVID, but now it’s much worse, because she’s gotten authorization to work from home.
I’m not even allowed into the doctor’s office without one of my parents there with me. That’s never been outright stated, but the few times I’ve tried to keep her out, I’ve been subjected to some extremely aggressive guilt-tripping.
So, all in all, life sucks right now. I’m not giving in to her demands, and am looking into everything I can to find a way out of this that doesn’t turn me into a virtual prisoner. This includes doing my best to write as much as I can, because the only thing my mother doesn’t have control over is my PayPal account and so Patreon is the only way I can make some money right now. Still, I don’t know how my mood and energy levels will be over the next few months, nor how often things will go wrong. So I can’t say how constant I will be. I’ll do my best, though.
That’s it. I’m done ranting. Thanks for reading, if you made it this far.

After her marriage with Frank Randall has failed and Claire Beauchamp flees from her violent husband, she finds refuge in the house of the Fraser/Murray family in Berlin-Wilhelmshorst. But then tensions arise between Britain (which has since left the EU) and some EU member states. All holders of an English passport are required to leave EU territory within six weeks … and suddenly Claire’s fate looks more uncertain than ever.
This story was written for the #14DaysofOutlander event, hosted by @scotsmanandsassenach

Chapter 9: 14 Men (5)
After she sat down and Jamie poured everyone a glass of water, Ferdinand Groide began:
"Mrs. Beauchamp, Jamie, Mr. Fraser, told me that your husband is Dr. Frank Randall. Is that correct?"
(...)
"As you may also know, I have left my husband. Our marriage had been on paper only for several years. I intend to ask for a divorce, if that's possible from here. But I still have to care about this man's life. I'm a doctor, I took an oath. If I reveal the secrets I have learned... what will you do to him?"
"What do you mean? What are we going to do with him?"
"Will you hurt him? I mean, will you let someone hurt him?"
Ferdinand Groide and Jamie looked at each other in amazement.
"Mrs. Beauchamp, we're not the Mafia. We don't hire hit men."
"But you're in Intelligence, Mr. Groide."
Claire said that sentence with the same calm and objectivity as if she was saying to Jenny:
"If you put one more egg in the batter, it gets better."
"And intelligence agencies do these things," she added to her statement with the same objectivity.
"Well, maybe the CIA or the KGB. Let me answer you this way: In my opinion, a living Frank Randall is far more interesting and valuable to a secret service than a dead Frank Randall."
"In other words, you guarantee me that the information I give you will not endanger his life."
Groide and Jamie looked at each other again.
        "Promise me."
It wasn't a question, it wasn't a request, it was a demand, and the words Claire used to make that demand left none of the men unaware that there was no alternative to this bargain for them.
Groide struck the hand Claire held out to him.
"You have my word, Mrs. Beauchamp. You don't know me yet and you probably mistrust me. That's only natural. But Jamie, Mr. Fraser, can assure you that I'm a man of my word."
Claire looked over at Jamie. He nodded.
        "Done."
She reached for the glass of water that Jamie had put in her hand and emptied it in one gulp.
        Then she began to talk.

"It was in the year 2015, in late November 2015 to be exact."
"Excuse me, Mrs. Beauchamp," Groide objected, "but we ought to do this properly."
He removed from his briefcase a device whose rectangular clunkness was reminiscent of an early mobile phone. After placing it in the center of the table, he inserted two small, round microphones attached to longer cables, one pointing at Claire and one pointing at himself. Groide pressed the record button, then he gave the date, time, place, names of those present and, as the reason for the recording, ‘Statement by Dr. Claire Elisabeth Beauchamp’.
Jamie had to smile. Ferdinand was a friendly person, but he was also a German bureaucrat. Everything had to follow the specific order and everything had to be done 'by the book'. Those Germans. They had rules for everything. They couldn't just have a conversation like that, it had to be a 'statement' and of course it had to be 'recorded'. In this country everything was recorded, either on paper or on tape. And then everything was filed, paginated, numbered and archived. Nothing was lost. They were so damn meticulous, these Germans, but also so damn effective.
"Please begin with your personal life, Mrs. Beauchamp. Name, birthday, place of birth, family, etc."
"My name is Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp. I was born in London on October 20, 1993, the only child of Julia, née Moriston, and Henry Montmorency Beauchamp. My mother was a primary school teacher, my father worked as a statistician for an insurance company. In the winter of 1998 my parents were killed in a car accident. My uncle, Lambert Quentin Beauchamp, was appointed by the authorities as my foster father and guardian. He was my only living relative, my father's only brother. Due to the activities of my uncle, who was an egyptologist and archaeologist, I grew up in England for only a short time, the rest of the time we spend abroad. When I was 16 years old, my uncle returned to England permanently and accepted a professorship at Oxford University. Shortly afterwards I began training as a nurse. Also in Oxford. At the age of 19, I had just completed my education, I met my future husband Franklin Wolverton Randall through my uncle. He also worked in the history department and specialised in Scottish history. At times he worked as an assistant to a professor. We married the following year. My uncle died only a few months later. His health had unfortunately not been the best at the end of his life. When my husband was called to Harvard University's history department, we moved to Boston.

Groide nodded. Jamie was sure that nothing Claire had told him so far was new to his friend. Guaranteed, they had checked Claire from the day he requested the visa for her passport. And they had certainly not been idle since then. At "In Vino Veritas" there was a small but very effective group of staff who had certainly dug up everything they could find about the young woman in the past few days.
"When and how did you learn of your husband's secret activities?"
"It was in the year 2015, in late November of that year to be exact. Does the name Jonathan Pollard mean anything to you?"
Jamie listened with new interest. Groide just nodded.
"Then you know that this man has served thirty years in the United States for espionage. In 2015 he was released on parole and in the American media there was a lot of coverage and discussion for days. I had never heard this man's name before and, to be honest, I didn't care about the whole thing. However, I listened up when my husband spoke about it. It was a Sunday, two days after Pollard was released. I remember the whole thing so well because that day was the day of the terrible accident in that jademine in Myanmar, where 90 people were killed and over 100 people were missing. We had had dinner and then Frank turned on the TV. There was a talk show where the case was discussed. My husband had already started drinking in the afternoon. While Frank was watching the talk show, I thought, ‘My goodness, they're talking about an age-old espionage case and people are dying elsewhere without the media even paying attention.’"
Claire reached for her glass, which Jamie had refilled in the meantime, and took a big sip.
"I didn't pay much attention to the discussion on TV. But then suddenly Frank started mumbling loudly:
'Spy! Spy! Spy! Nonsense! The man was an amateur! What real spy leaves secret documents openly on his desk in the office and his wife was stupid enough to leave a suitcase with secret documents with a neighbour who was in the military himself!’”
Claire reached for her glass again and drank.
"What he said made me furious, so I said to him: 'Oh yes, but you know how a real spy behaves!’ I thought his reaction was terribly arrogant. To my surprise, he then turned down the TV. He came over and sat down with me on the sofa. He looked me in the eyes and grinned. Then he said, ‘Yes, my darling, I know that. The MI5 recruited and trained me while I was still studying at Oxford. Right after they heard I was going to specialise in Scottish history. With my family background and the good connections we had in the military and police through my cousin Jonathan, there were no obstacles.’”
Tumblr media
"Books" by MichaelGaida
"How did you react to that?"
"Well, at first I was stumped. I thought he was just showing-off again. So I replied, ‘Why would the MI5 need an expert in Scottish history?’ He replied, ‘Well, of course you can't imagine, you little fool. Good God, Claire! The Scots want independence and just because last year's referendum went so well, they will not give up. It's their history they're drawing strength from! What do you think will happen if they really gain their independence? It could set off a chain reaction. You know that Prime Minister Cameron announced two years ago that he would hold a referendum on Britain's withdrawal from the EU if he was re-elected in 2015? So? He has been re-elected! Now there must be a referendum. And what if Britain's withdrawal from the EU is carried out but Scotland becomes independent and is then admitted to the EU as a member? Did you ever think about that? This is going to get us in big trouble! Then the EU will continue to stand with two legs on our island! We can't let that happen.’”
Claire paused for a moment, then she went on:                  "I must have looked at him in wonder and disbelief, because suddenly he stormed out of the living room. I heard him looking for something in his study. When he came back he had a newspaper article in his hand which he held in front of my face. ‘Read it,’ he said to me. ‘Our government takes this danger seriously... and so should you!‘          I took the article and read. It was an article in the International Business Times in July 2015. It reported that the Prime Minister had met with the CEOs of a media company. The purpose of the meeting was allegedly to prevent the broadcast of a TV series about the Scottish Rebellion of 1746 before the referendum on Scottish independence. It seems that a request has been made to postpone the broadcast. I later found on his desk a copy of an article from ‘The Scotsman’, which also covered the subject in detail.”                  Groide and Jamie looked at each other and smiled. Both men nodded, but said nothing.
"Frankly," Claire continued, "I hadn't given the matter any thought at all. In the five years before, I had been mainly busy finishing my medical studies and gaining experience as a doctor. You don't have much time to worry about other things. Besides, due to my, well, somewhat non-conformist upbringing, I was never so much confined to one country alone ..."
"How is it that despite medical school, your husband still refers to you as..." Groide is looking for words, "intellectually... weaker...?”          "Frank believes that medical school would consist largely of memorizing the contents of textbooks. He thought that people's bodies were somehow all the same and that if you had learned the appropriate forms of treatment, then you could treat them. He never understood the diversity and complexity of the human body and how medical science reacts to it."                   "Did your husband explain his duties for the MI5 to you?"          "When I told him that Scotland's history, and Scotland's ambitions for independence, were well known, he told me not to think so superficially. He said that historians are not only concerned with the past. They can also make predictions about the future to a certain extent, based on their knowledge. I should think about what the clan system had meant and still means to the Scots. Why did the English central government everything to destroy it after the Jacobite uprising of 1746? England should not allow a united counter-power to be formed again in the north of the country. He was probably particularly concerned about this lobby group, One Banner for all Scots, which had formed the year before."
Tumblr media
"Scottish Independence" by Emphyrio         Claire was focused on Ferdinand Groide and the recording equipment in front of her. She didn't see Jamie's face become more and more thoughtful.
"Mrs. Beauchamp, all this is interesting, but... not very specific."          "At first, I too got to know only general things. It only became more specific later when I did... well, my own... research.                  "You did your own research?"                  Groide suddenly seemed interested again. Jamie tried not to smile. What seemed like a minor revelation to his friend only confirmed what he had been thinking all along. Claire was an intelligent, strong woman. Her strength might have been broken for a time by what her husband had done to her. But Jamie was sure that she would find her way back to that strength. And he vowed to himself that he would do everything he could to help her.          "I thought Frank was a braggart for a long time, but... I can't describe it exactly. Something had caught my interest. Then a colleague asked me if I would trade a weekly shift with her. She would have had a night shift, but her babysitter was unavailable. I agreed and that same afternoon I went to the university library and borrowed books on Scottish history and the independence movement. The department where I was on night duty was not very labour-intensive. I had a lot of time to read and think during the nights of that week."          She paused for a moment.          "After that week, I became aware of the urgency of the issue."          Groide didn't say anything, but his gaze urged her to continue.          "National self-determination. Well, there's no need to explain that further. Scotland's oil. 64% of Europe's oil reserves are on Scottish territory. They're said to be worth 4 trillion pounds. Then there is the issue of renewable energy. I mean Scotland has 25 % of Europe's wind energy potential, 25 % of Europe's tidal energy potential and 10 % of Europe's wave energy potential. I do not have to tell you that these are also enormous financial potentials."          A fine smile appeared on Groide's face.          "And then, of course, there is the question of nuclear disarmament: with control of defence and foreign policy, an independent Scotland could tackle the elimination of Trident nuclear weapons, an issue long associated with the campaign for an independent Scotland. Trident class submarines carrying missiles with 120 nuclear warheads are based at the Clyde naval base near Glasgow. In the event of Scottish independence, England would have to withdraw these weapons and revise its defence strategy. I imagine that would be a thorn in the side of the American allies as well. There will certainly be a lot of diplomatic pressure behind the scenes."          Claire took a deep breath.          "Now you're going to tell me that this is all public information and I would agree with you. But I wasn't aware of it before. These informations woke me up. It took a while but when I had the opportunity to take on another week of night shifts I immediately agreed. In this time I developed a kind of plan. I was eager to find out if Frank's statement was true. At first I tried to track when he was going to conferences or work meetings. Not all of them, but several of them took him to England and Scotland. I can't prove it, but I had the impression that his travels became more frequent at times when 'the Scottish theme' was boiling up. Later, after 2015, and particularly after the brexite, his travels intensified.”          To Jamie's surprise, Claire reached into her handbag, which she had hung on the back of her chair, and pulled out a piece of paper she handed over to Ferdinand Groide.
Tumblr media
"Tea" by Pexels          "This is a list of all the trips my husband has taken since 2013. supposedly for reasons of his work as a historian."          Groide skimmed the list, then put it aside.          "Thank you very much. We will try to verify the data."          "In the weeks that followed, I voluntarily took several weeks of night duty. Because there was another advantage to this. I was at home while my husband was at university and could look through his records almost undisturbed."
"Will you share the knowledge you have gained from this?"          "Yes. But perhaps we could have some tea?" Claire replied as she looked at Jamie.          "Certainly."          He got up and left the room. Ferdinand Groide pressed the 'stop' button on the recorder. Then he got up and stretched a bit. Claire did the same.

~ Devil May Care ~ @maildt
Some memories are forgotten.
“Александр, ты можешь держать ребенка?” (Alexander, can you hold the baby?)
Some fade over time.
“6 DEAD AND 4 HOSPITALIZED DUE TO ACCIDENTAL RADIATION EXPOSURE IN RUSSIA.”
But some are remembered vividly.
“He’s dead?! But—But how?!”
It really just depends on what you concern yourself with, or at least that’s what we tell ourselves.
“But Mello!”
“Don’t waste your breath!”
Roger didn’t. No one did, not even as one of their own walked out the doors for the final time and disappeared into darkness. Um, hello? Child protective services much? Since when was fourteen years old an acceptable time to start “living my own life?”
Wammy’s House: the orphanage, the institution, the asylum. It cranked out little monsters, but perhaps if one of those monsters could escape early, he would be okay. Alternate tried. He wasn’t. But Mello wasn’t Alternate. Mello was, well, Mello.
So clearly, he wouldn’t be okay either.
The first month was the hardest. He had nothing. Not a home, nor family, nor money. The boy had never truly felt like an orphan until then. Countless times he found himself locked in public bathrooms in tears, wanting out. Eventually, the gaps between breakdowns grew wider and wider, and Mello found himself gradually building a wall, day by day, brick by brick. Each individual brick was made of pride, and the mortar used to hold them together was purpose. His construct would have been seamless, if he hadn’t built it in sand. Rage is not a stable foundation.
Still, his castle hadn’t fallen yet, and he was a king.
Blood, sweat, and tears were all it took to put himself at the front of the Mafia—well, those amongst other things. He wouldn’t admit it, but he was afraid the first time he held a gun. Afraid the first time he shot someone. Afraid the first time he was in a room with a bunch of men older and bigger than him. He was afraid the first time he had sex, and maybe a little afraid the next few times after that too. He tried some drugs and those scared him. He didn’t like to get drunk, and whenever he was the focus of a shootout, he felt a bit of a rush. That was a good thing.
Mello liked the rush. He loved it, really. It turned his fear into his strength. With a hit of adrenaline and coke, there was nothing he couldn’t do. Although the details of what lead up to his encounter with Rod Ross are insignificant, know that the boy-to-man-grown-up-too-fast had to accomplish a great deal of despicable deeds to earn the mountain of a man’s respect. As a certain God of Mischief would say, his ledger is gushing red.
His passport says twenty-four, but little did anyone know that an eighteen year old was at the head of the Mafia. It was the natural choice. Other than the good guys (if you can really call L, Near, and his group of blind monkeys that), who else wanted Kira dead? Together with the bad guys, Mello had an army.
Did that make him the bad guy?
Duh.
He coughed. He has a bloody nose and sinus infection from all the dust in this place. “Damn,” his voice rasped, pulling a tissue out of his pocket to wipe up the blood and throw it on the ground like a world-class champion. The sooner they can get out of here, the better.
These days, it’s weapons deal after weapons deal, and it always ends with someone else’s blood dried up under his fingernails. Disgusting. Taking another wet tissue, our blond princess wiped his hands clean and gently shoved his gloves back on each perfectly-manicured hand, one by one. His ego was inflated now.
He looked up from behind his men and grinned as he observed his plan approaching fruition. Whatever gold mine of a trade agreement they had just struck with a subset of the Syrian Military Council was enough to get his men the power they wanted, in addition to the support of an old enemy. It was a ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ type of situation. Look at that, Kira. Criminals all over the world working together because they want you dead. How touching.
That goal, however, disguised his real reasons for coming here. Unfortunately and in case the following information is somehow unbeknownst to you, though it is albeit the most obvious information in possibility the entire universe, Mello is a little bitch.
Meaning that he is a liar, and the one thing he does not yet have is insurance. Though he may have his own army, pissing off people all over the world and some even in his own vicinity casts a bit of a death warrant on his head, and that isn’t even including the man, the myth, the legend: Kira. He couldn’t even begin to keep track of all the people that would love to have his sexy-ass head on a stick in their living room. Although, maybe those people should just stick to the normal ways of assassination and stop binge-watching Game of Thrones.
Nonetheless, he needs insurance. Mello talks a lot of shit about wanting to be the best and not letting anyone get in his way, but none of his Mafia associates are actually aware of what that entails. Surely, if they were to see how truly childish his desires were, and what’s more, the predicted outcome of what he is trying to achieve, his own army might even turn around and strike him down. Not to mention, he knows they will try to strike him down when Mello finally betrays every single one of them once he’s gotten everything he wanted. That is something that will not do, but let them try.
Mello makes perfect plans. They’re flawless, and he won’t account for things spinning out of turn, which is a problem. No good detective needs a back-up plan, do they? Near certainly doesn’t have one. L didn’t, but that is why Mello and Near were dragged into this situation in the first place. L was supposed to find Kira and execute him, but he got killed, and L didn’t prepare for that. The one fucking job that so-called genius detective had was to pick a successor and he couldn’t even fucking do that. Just how competent was he then? That institution had kids literally killing themselves over the push to be the next L. Mello might as well have done the same fucking thing. God, it infuriated him just thinking about it, but he couldn’t have that, because it shook his castle.
So then, L, is this enough? Have I proved myself yet? By seeking help and having a backup plan in case things go wrong, am I capable yet?!
Mello grit his teeth, staring out the darkened window of the car that was taking his team to their hotel. He noticed that one of the other guys was staring at him before quickly looking away when Mello met eye contact. Damn, he needed to swallow down his anger.
When the car stopped and everyone departed, Mello collected himself and retired to his room. It wasn’t until late that night that he made a run for it, fully disguised in a completely inconspicuous (cue the eyeroll) feathery black coat in the heat of Syrian summer. He was sweating. It was hot as balls. But he needs someone to trust. Someone who knows the depth of his will and will aid him in the fight, at least, to take down Kira. No one saw him though. He knew they wouldn’t because he knew these men all too well and what they would be doing right about now. Alcohol, drugs, and orgies. Fun, fun, fun in the Syrian sun!
His nose was starting to bleed again. He was high on coke, but hell, he needed the energy for what he was about to do. Swearing to himself, he took a rolled up cotton swab and stuck it in his nose like the little kid in Wammy’s school that always has a nose bleed. Super attractive male right there. Wet with sweat and what looks like a tampon hanging out of his nose. And he probably smells great too.
But he supposed Matt was that kid. He used to get nosebleeds a lot from what Mello could remember. The two were never very close but Mello considered him tolerable. Maybe Matt felt stronger about him though, because Mello was a pretty self-centered child. He didn’t tell anyone other than Roger and Near that he was leaving before he vanished. He supposed that Matt was the closest thing he had to a friend back then, but then again, he didn’t really consider anyone to be his friend. Though perhaps he was just playing the role of the victim. The child arrived at Wammy’s when he was very young, and he was always a tantrum-y child, excelling at playing up the “poor me I’m second” card.
Good memories were sparse, but he did have some with Matt. The other made him laugh a few times. They shared a few classes, especially the high-level ones, because Matt was supposed to be a successor too. It was clear he didn’t want it though. Mello never understood how Matt could be so carefree in that environment. The kid would rant about the government and anarchy, and Mello thought it was all bullshit. How could the world run peacefully without government?  Impossible, he thought, but Mello was all black and white. It was like Matt was
Grey.
There was always a part of Mello that was wary of Matt. He was thankful the other never applied himself as much as Mello did, but he knew that if he had, then there was a good chance that Mello wouldn’t have been in the running to be L in the first place. But then again, maybe not. How smart could he really be if he believed all the shit he would spew in their political science classes? To Mello, he seemed backwards.
That was alright though. If he was still the same person as he remembered, then the Mafioso was sure that he would be down to pursue Kira—or in other words, be his backup plan. And even if he wasn’t, Mello was ready to persuade him by any means necessary. Surely the boy could live with a missing finger or toe. Who knows! Whatever it may be, he surely wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. Also, he didn’t really have any other choices.
As disgusting as ever, the pile of sweat and clogged nostrils carried on through the night. He managed hail down a taxi that would take him to his hopefully-correct destination, his Arabic wasn’t perfect though so it was a bit of a hassle. If his sources were correct, and they always were, then Matt was exactly where he always said he’d be. Now, it was just a matter of tracking him down and getting him alone to reveal his grand-ole plan like a stereotypical villain in a superhero movie. Would that make Matt the hero?
After about a two hour ride, the car slowed down as it pulled up to a nightclub. It was hidden, behind what appeared to be a store selling ceramics and other craft-work. Mello had conned someone earlier that week into giving him the proper knock and password so that when he was questioned, he could spit some Kurdish sentence out with ease. It was quite funny actually. He sold off one of his own men’s oxycodone for the intelligence, and then accused the same man of deceitful drug trade in exchange for the exact same information. Both men involved are dead.
The best way to tie your loose ends is to just cut them off.
Blue and pink lights welcomed him, but the bass is what really sent him on edge. Damn, he forgot how well a good buzz mixed with music. He did his best to keep his toothy grin down and moved further into the room, making note of all that was around. Taking the tissue out of his nose and tossing it to the ground (2 for 2), he pulled his hood up more. The real threat here was that someone other than Matt would recognize him. Fortunately, he hadn’t been to this part of the country yet, and so the threat was not as intense. As always, he remained cautious, sinking into the shadows. Now, the real game can begin.

Now, it's about specializing in the smaller details.
Most travel brokers are paid a fee from resorts, airlines or tour operators after they guide a shopper with them. Some resorts or tour operators pay more fee than others.

BARCELONA, SPAIN Travel Costs
There are miles of white-sand seashores (like Rendezvous Bay, overlooking neighboring Saint Martin island), as well as secluded coves reached by boat, similar to at Little Bay. After a day within the solar, hit up nice restaurants, as well as a low-key nightlife with stay music that spans from reggae to string bands. In a nutshell, you have fewer things to fret about with all-inclusive packages.
If you worry about issues that are just out of attain, you gained’t respect what’s in your hand. I’ve taken dozens of European journeys, and I still want more time. It’s a blessing that we can by no means see all of Europe. Alternate intense big cities with villages and countryside.
But in case you are planning on having three drinks or extra per day, plus three meals a day, it might average about $one hundred a day, according to her calculations. Jen Pellerito, journey writer and creator of Jen on the Run, did an analysis using an Expedia seek for resorts in Cancun for seven days (Aug. 24 to Aug. 31, 2018). Many all-inclusive resorts are close to major airports and big cities, stated Ebert. If you’re visiting a spot like the Caribbean, you’ll discover many resorts have private access to the beach. For instance, when you’re traveling alone, traversing a huge space, and spending the vast majority of your time in huge cities, it makes more sense to go by prepare with a rail cross than to mess with a car.

January Jewels 2020
I’ve purposely put off writing this monthly wrap-up because, well, christ. January was a terrible month. I don’t need to go into the details of why, but the consensus from everyone that I’ve talked to fully agrees with me on this. What the hell happened? Starting a new decade is supposed to be great. In any case, I’ll always have high hopes for the future. And I’m just thankful to begin a new month. Here’s what went down in the pit that was January 2020.
First things first, I recapped how my 2019 resolutions turned out. Why don’t more people do this? Where’s the accountability in reviewing your past resolutions? They’re not fucking birthday wishes, they’re intentions! More people need to follow through with this, even if the results aren’t what you hoped for.
I made my 2020 resolutions.
I fell absolutely in love with this sketch.
I did two podcasts with Nathan - one where we talked about the pope incident and one where I absolutely scream at him about Hillary.
I read Jenny Slate’s new book as well as a tiny little book about how to live a good life.
I ended up buying another J. Crew swimsuit (the same one I bought a few months ago, but this time in red) and I have no regrets.
In love with Trader Joe’s (dairy free) coconut whipped cream, I can’t stop using it in hot chocolate.
I rewatched (or watched for the first time, I truly can’t remember) The Staircase and it’s so good. I’m pretty sure Marla got me MP3 copies of this years ago and I did watch it, but I completely forgot about it in detail. Such a good watch. If you’ve already seen it, do you know about the owl theory? It’s a wild one, but, like, I think an owl did it now?
I’ve been using a small bottle of OUAI’s Wave Spray and if I can figure out how to not overspray it, it’s a great product. Once you use it though, your hair only looks good that day. After you sleep on it, your hair looks like shit. (Is that true of all hair products? I have absolutely no idea.)
Bought this Banana Republic top for $13 on sale and I love it because it does not feel like it cost so little.
I don’t know if it’s a Canadian brand but I have found a wicked alternative to Dollarama: Buck or Two. I went to one in Brampton and they’ve got everything.
I watched most of the SNL with Jennifer Lopez and wow did it suck. 99% of the sketches were basically “She’s pretty. That’s the joke.” Fucking hated it. They do this a lot of the time with certain actresses and I can’t ever tell if it’s because the actress loves doing these sketches or they’re afraid she can’t be funny. Whatever the reason is, blow my brains out, please.
I went to the Ear Inn in the city and it was lovely! Super old place. Service was great. Burger was great.
I went to Glossier with the intention of buying the cheek stain and then decided against it. It’s not a good product. I literally pinched my cheeks and got a better rosiness.
I came across probably my favourite winter children’s book of all time, The Snowman by Raymond Briggs. Look at one page of this magic.
Tumblr media
I was so happy to hear about this matter finally being settled in New York.
I went to The Dutch again for Restaurant Week for their steak tartare and it’s just heaven on a plate.
I rewatched the great What Lies Beneath and man, it’s still just such a great movie.
As you may have heard, Papyrus is going out of business, so I’ve popped in twice to see what the closing deals are and they aren’t worth it yet (only 30% off! C’mon! I won’t get out of bed for at least 60%), so I’ll keep stopping in every so often until they’ve become desperate.
Love this part of a recent SNL (below). (If you can’t see it in Canada, search for “white male rage SNL.”
youtube
I finally went to Boulud Sud for their pasta happy hour and man was it not worth it. The place has a terrible setup if you’re sitting at the bar, the food was absolutely nothing special and had ridiculous portion sizes. It’s also a bad sign when the bread is tastier than the entree. Super disappointing.
I tried on the bras and underwear from LIVELY in Soho and even though it’s priced reasonably, I couldn’t find anything I loved. I have a feeling that I could be into it though, so I’ll go again sometime in the future for sure.
I’ll forever love the lunch special at Pil Pil on the Upper East Side. I know I probably bring this up too much, but man. Love tapas.
I can’t stop buying sunglasses for sale at ALDO. And I won’t.
Tumblr media
I finished season one of The West Wing and it was really good. I keep forgetting about it, but I should stick with it. People, like, loved that show, didn’t they?
I started using Sol De Janeiro’s Bum Bum Cream… on my butt. That’s what it’s for, no? So far, I mean… it feels smooth? It’s not at all greasy, which I like. Seems weird to have a cream just for your butt, but who am I to criticize.
Ate the fish tacos at Summer Salt and they’re good! It’s insane and great that they sell margaritas at a fast casual place, too.
Very into this Pat McGrath mascara that I got as a Sephora reward.
Love this Wells For Boys sketch (below) from a few years ago that I just saw for the first time (thanks for showing me, Irene!)
youtube
I haven’t been there in years, but I went to Sweet Afton for happy hour in Astoria the other day and had the pickle martini which actually wasn’t terrible. Love that place.
Tried the lunch burger at Peter Luger finally! And yes it was a good burger (love that they use American cheese and the bun was very good even though it's not a potato bun). Steakhouse burgers are always hard for me to rate since a steakhouse burger is a real *entree* unlike the regular, everyday burgers that other places have which are not as big and overwhelming. An everyday burger is easy to rate since it's either great, overrated or shit. A steakhouse burger has nuances, how juicy is too juicy? How's the quality of the meat? What are the ideal toppings? Should someone shoot me for my extensive burger thoughts? Yes.
I went to see a free orchestral performance put on by Julliard at Lincoln Center and it was great. It reminded me so much of going to my brother Gary’s recitals when I was a kid, just loved it.
Had dinner at Portale. The pasta was insane. This place might be a rival for L’Artusi! Dare I say it! Every bite was phenomenal. MUST return. (Noteworthy: it also just got two stars in the Times.)
LOVED this piece about Ricky Gervais and the Golden Globes. Favourite line: “The least risky thing in the world is announced apathy.“
Maybe you don’t know this, but 90% of post offices in the U.S. have bulletproof glass between the workers and the customers. It’s obviously because awful things have happened, but I’ve been going to this one post office in the city on 23rd street that doesn’t have the glass and the workers are SO MUCH MORE PLEASANT. I wish all locations were like this one. Just a thought.
Just bought another one of these UNIQLO shirts that I love in dark grey.
Every January I make sure to:
Mark down all holidays/birthdays/anniversaries (Valentine’s Day, Daylight Saving Times, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving)
Check expiration dates for passport/license/health card/insurance and write down any important renewal dates
I’ve watched the first two new episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm and it fucking blows. There was only one thing I laughed at (when a server thought Larry was “oggling” her but he was really just keeping an eye on her tray with pigs in blankets) but OTHER THAN THAT, what a piece of shit season so far! I fucking hated the part in one episode where he videotapes the consent given between him and some woman as they’re making out. ALSO, and this has happened a few times over the seasons, he’s recycling fucking Seinfeld jokes. FROM THE SHOW. Talking about when it’s too late to get “Happy New Year-ed”? Are we kidding here?! Fucking lazy as hell. I might just stop watching.
I watched the new Taylor Swift documentary on Netflix and it’s really good. Even if you have zero opinion on her, I really liked it. (It also introduced me to this great song.)
Things that I’m looking forward to this month: seeing a Raptors game at Barclays Center, finally sitting down and watching season two of Shrill in its entirety, reading Joan Rivers’ book Enter Talking and and maybe going to another Restaurant Week lunch before the end date. February, please oh please don’t be as terrible as January.
If you’ve got any interest in reading last month’s roundup, you can see what went down in December over here!

Do you have any entries on your blog that covers student loans and how to approach them for someone who is nervous about debt? Thank you!
Combined with the following asks:
I am an avid reader and impressed your journey. I read that you came from a lower income family but I noticed that you also went to top universities which is impressive. I am in the same situation and I am, going to take out thousands of dollars loans to pay for my dream college, is it something you would advise? What is the alternative for people in our situation?
If it is not too much to ask, how did you pay for college if your family was poor? As someone who is of similar background as yours. Thank you for the time you take to write to your readers and answer their questions
Between going to a european top college, staying far from my family and going into debt for it or attending a local college, staying home, but no debt, what is your opinion? What could be the best decision?
Higher ranked college + debt or lower ranked college + no debt?
Related:
Hi Mr-entj. Do you have any advice for becoming more financially literate?
General money management advice
Mr. ENTJ can you break down how to interpret the compensation from an offer letter such as salary and bonuses for someone with multiple offers trying to weigh options? What to look for?
Student Loans 101
I don’t give personalized financial advice but 5 things to know before you take out a student loan (applicable mainly to American students):
1. Understand the financial impact of student loans on your life after graduation
This is the absolute #1 priority and where students really get screwed over. Most people see the loan numbers on paper but don’t fully comprehend the day to day burden repaying that debt will have on their lives. Here’s an easy way to ballpark impact: for every $10,000 you borrow, you’ll need to pay back $100 per month … for 10 years (The average federal loan is at a 6% interest rate with a 10 year or 120 month repayment schedule).
This means:
$20,000 in student loans = $200 monthly payment
$40,000 in student loans = $400 monthly payment
$60,000 in student loans = $600 monthly payment
$80,000 in student loans = $800 monthly payment
$100,000 in student loans = $1,000 monthly payment
$250,000 in student loans = $2,500 monthly payment
These are very rough estimates because loans have varied interest rates. Use student loan calculators for more accuracy: BankRate Student Loan Calculator, FinAid Loan Calculator, and the Federal Student Loan Repayment Calculator.
Understand what you’ll make vs. what you’ll pay. For salary, remember that, roughly:
$20,000 annual salary = $500 per paycheck or $1,000 per month
$40,000 annual salary = $1,000 per paycheck or $2,000 per month
$60,000 annual salary = $1,500 per paycheck or $3,000 per month
$80,000 annual salary = $2,000 per paycheck or $4,000 per month
$100,000 annual salary = $2,500 per paycheck or $5,000 per month
For perspective, let’s put the student loan and salary data together. This means that if you graduate with a job that pays $40,000 per year but you have a $40,000 student loan you’ll bring home approximately $1,600 every month($2,000 salary - $400 monthly loan payment). For added perspective, the average cost of a 1-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles is $2400– and that’s just for housing– that doesn’t take into account other things you need to survive as a living and breathing human being like, say, food and water, clothing, utilities, health insurance, car insurance, car payment, gas, etc.
A general rule is not to take out student loans greater than your salary after graduation. I knew my salary after graduation would exceed $130,000 so I took out the loan and I’ve been able to pay it back with relative ease but it was a long and painful process that required many sacrifices. With my $1,100 monthly loan payment over 10 years, I could have bought 2 Corvette Stingrays but I also know that I couldn’t have the career I have today without taking on that debt.
2. Research universities, potential careers, job placement, and salary before you take out a loan
Don’t be that clueless ocarina major with $100,000 in student loans and no job post-graduation.
Some people say that college is a place to learn– and it is– but it’s also a financial investment in your future. If you want to attend college just to study your passion with no regard for post-graduation salary then consider going to a library, joining a hobby group, or surfing Google for hours instead because at least those options are free and they won’t bury you in decades of debt. College is a financial commitment amounting to tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars– don’t wander into it lightly.
Research:
Tuition and financial aid statistics by university. How much does it cost to attend each school? How much is housing? What other hidden fees are there? How much financial aid does the school give? What scholarships and grants are available to accepted students? What % of students receive aid? What is the average debt carried by graduates?
Reputation, rankings, and strength of programs by university. How is this school regarded in the industry, the state, the country, the world? What is the strength of the program you’re interested in? What companies recruit at your school? What is your university and program of choice ranked? Your college degree is your passport into the professional world and the more prestigious and well-regarded it is, the easier your journey will be. (Mr. ENTJ, do things like rankings, reputation, and prestige for which school you attend matter when it comes to your career?)
Career services and alumni network by university. What career services does the school provide? What companies recruit at your school? How active are the alumni of this school? How successful are the alumni of this school? Top companies recruit at top schools, it’s a very simple concept, so if you want to break into a very difficult industry this is a question to ask. Alumni are important because they’re the club you join post-graduation. The more successful and helpful alumni are, the more plentiful the opportunities throughout your journey.
Prospective careers by major. What can you do with your degree? What are the careers this major leads into? How much do those careers pay? What is the demand for those careers? How difficult is it to get a job in those fields?
Job placement and salary statistics by major. What is the average % of graduates who get jobs after graduation? What’s the average salary of those graduates? Look for salaries by major because schools often average salaries across the entire university and that’s misleading. An interpretive dancing major and a chemical engineering major will not make the same amount of money post-graduation.
I don’t give advice on what schools people should or shouldn’t attend or if they’re worth the debt but do thorough research and if the university has a prestigious reputation, strong program in a particular field, active alumni network, high job placement, generous financial aid, high salaries post-graduation, and good career support then that trends towards a worthwhile investment.
3. If you need to pay for college, remember this hierarchy: free money > federal loans >>>>> private loans
Free money includes grants, scholarships and other options that don’t require repayment. As a general rule, the better student you are (grades, GPA, test scores), the more money universities will throw at you because you’re a more attractive candidate and they know other universities are fighting for you to attend their schools. Students with bad grades and bad test scores get crappier financial aid packages because universities view you as someone who should feel lucky to have been accepted at all.
Federal loans are low-interest, fixed-rate loans funded by the government. These are preferred because they have flexible repayment methods like income based repayment (the less or more you money you make, the less or more money you pay back) or loan forgiveness (PSLF program). Still, free money is preferable to any type of loan.
Private loans are a last resort and only if grants/scholarships and federal loans don’t provide enough money to cover expenses of your first-choice school. Private loans are given by banks and banks are ran by businessmen who want to make money. They typically have high interest rates, high fees, and inflexible repayment plans. Remember that their primary goal is to make money, they are not here to help you achieve your academic dreams.
4. Never go into debt attending a for-profit school
(*People triggered by absolutes*: “Never?”) Never. Their degrees are worthless in the job market, attend accredited universities only.

Will a for-profit degree get you a job?
5. Above all, prepare ahead of time before you start applying to colleges
Get top grades and top test scores in high school because this will result in more generous financial aid packages.
Take as many AP courses and tests as possible because these can count for college credit and save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, in the long run. I took so many AP courses in high school I entered college with sophomore standing.
Save money for college throughout your life from summer jobs, side jobs, allowances, etc. I didn’t have rich parents so I set aside a few dollars from each paycheck into a savings account.
Apply early for multiple grants and scholarships to accumulate as much free money as possible. This is a numbers game; the more you apply, the better chance you have of winning so search far and wide and blanket applications and essays to anything you remotely qualify for. I had so much scholarship money in undergrad that I made money going to college.
Consider community colleges. Attending community college for 2 years and then transferring to a university can save thousands of dollars in tuition and get you the same degree someone who paid 4 years of university tuition has. I did 2 years of community college then transferred to a top public university and saved $50,000 in the process (university is approximately $25,000 per year).

As stated by the terms of the Government of Vietnam, foreigners generally speaking and Poland passport holders particularly are only permitted to stay in Vietnam for 06 maximum continuous months.  Bear in mind you don't need a hotel reservation as a way to find visa support.  The accreditation registration isn't required to leave the nation, although the immigration card is needed.

Foreigners may be put under surveillance.  You don't need to provide information regarding everyone you know in Russia, 1-2 relatives' data ought to be enough.  UK citizens are most likely among the most well-travelled people I know.
While the proportion of migrants in the whole population of developed countries continues to rise, in addition, there are a growing number of expatriates from developed countries that move abroad for professional or private factors.  If you're considering entering Russia by road, you will have to take an alternate route through a different nation. Additionally, there are restrictions based on the area you're planning to visit.
Yes, there's no distinctive exception.  More recently a new financial structure was designed and different investment programmes are developed.  There's a list of countries for which there's a visa waiver possibility.
Kaliningrad Visa - Overview The very first step is obtaining a Russian business visa, which includes a lineup of particular requirements. This procedure can take a while.
Before you start to submit an application for a Kaliningrad visa from the Netherlands, there are a couple of documents which are needed in order to complete the application.  It is an issue of principle.  The form isn't difficult to fill.
As a way to track the program, you have to put in your application ID and the password you used.  Therefore, it's strongly advised to submit complete application.  As soon as your application is done, you should use a valid debit or credit card to pay the last evisa processing fee and await an email notifying you regarding the status of your electronic Kalinigrad visa.

The entire oblast will be contained in the agreement.  It's among the primary Catholic churches in Kaliningrad.  The Kaliningrad evisa enables travelers to pay a visit to Kaliningrad oblast for the aims of tourism, humanitarian, and company purposes.

To acquire a tour ticket you have to order a tour program with the support of our organization and give us a photo copy of your passport.   You will also get the invitation in your email.  Within the next step, you are going to have to provide information regarding your visit.
| Type of Kaliningrad Visa To acquire a tour ticket you have to order a tour program with the support of our organization and give us a photo copy of your passport.   You are able to request them to assist you with certain different documents (insurance, invitation).  When you have paid they'll send you the letter by email in a couple of minutes.
The debut of electronic visas can lead to migration, criminogenic and other risks which are hard to calculate, or so the procedure is going to be carried out in stages.  It is a rather easy and fast solution.
All communications about the condition of the visa (like the final approved visa) will be transmitted via email.  The conventional processing time for the Kaliningrad visa on the internet is 4 days, although in some instances this could take longer.

My plan was supposed to receive a train from Gdansk to Kaliningrad.  If you're a traveler planning to pay a visit to Russia, one possible alternative is to turn in an application for a Kaliningrad evisa for Dutch citizens.  This visa permits you to stay in Russia for as much as 90 days.
You find nearly every conceivable problem in Kaliningrad.  It's among the primary Catholic churches in Kaliningrad.   Indeed, Kaliningrad is a little enclave surrounded by the EU countries, therefore it is reasonable.
The Argument About Kaliningrad Visa There are numerous visa agencies that can give you with this business invitation.  These visa changes are going to have larger impact of foreign travellers who potentially desire to remain in Colombia permanently.  You can receive this kind of visa to Russia only if you're an American citizen.
Sport-utility and luxury vehicles have a tendency to be the absolute most sought-after.  A number of them even offer lots of totally free visa days.  Don't neglect to buy amber jewellery for your family members.
You will also have to show you have medical travel insurance for this period.  Let's compare the e-visa with other forms of visas and see which one will fit your needs the very best.
Kaliningrad Visa - Overview These companies provide you with a tour ticket, which is referred to as a blanket visa or booking confirmation.  No extra period of validity beyond this is necessary.  There's a list of countries for which there's a visa waiver possibility.
Ok, I Think I Understand Kaliningrad Visa, Now Tell Me About Kaliningrad Visa! If you want my opinion, it is truly great that the Russian government introduced this form of visa and is working towards increasing the range of tourists in the nation.  You don't need to provide information regarding everyone you know in Russia, 1-2 relatives' data ought to be enough.  UK citizens are most likely among the most well-travelled people I know.
If you're found intoxicated in a public area, you might be detained and might be taken to a sobering-up centre, where you might want to devote the evening.  It's possible to have a boat cruise that stops over.   Unlike a normal tourist visa, you don't need an invitation letter or a hotel confirmation in order to make an application for an e-visa.
The visas aren't a problem while the affordable and direct flights are available with a tiny bit of research, these destinations are just must-travel.  If you're considering entering Russia by road, you will have to take an alternate route through a different nation. All individuals from eligible nations, no matter their age, must have an individual eVisa as a way to stop by Kaliningrad.

Hi, I just changed my name via deedpoll in Scotland and I'm getting super overwhelmed with changing my details and don't really know where to start. I've told mt bank and they will be sending me out a new card etc, and told my doctors. I tried to get a passport but they need a drivers licence as one of the proof documents, but when i went to get my drivers licence it asked for a passport, or a bunch of other stuff I don't have. Do you or anyone has advice on where to continue with all this?
As far as I’m aware the only reason that the passport office request driving licences is as proof that you are using your new name.  There are other documents that you could use instead of this, such as:
Tax record, e.g. a letter from a tax authority
National identity card or equivalent
Employment record, e.g. an official letter fromyour employer
Visa or residence permit
Educational record eg a school report
Letter sent to you from a central, regional orlocal government department
Medical/health card
Voter’s card
Bank statement
Baptism/Confirmation certificate
You say that you’ve changed your details with your bank, so once you get your new card then you should be able to request a bank statement from them in your new name, so that’s an alternative which should be fairly simple to obtain.  Another alternative would be updating your details with HMRC and requesting confirmation that this has been done.
For your driving licence, if you already have a driving licence/provisional then you just need to send your deed poll and a D1 form.  If you’re also applying for your provisional then you will need to send proof of identity documents as well.  If you have a passport then you can use this, even if it’s in the wrong name (just send your deed poll as well).
If you don’t have a passport then you will need to send your birth certficate and one of these documents:
National Insurance card or a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) showing your National Insurance number
photocopy of the front page of a benefits book or an original benefits claim letter
P45, P60 or pay slip
marriage certificate or divorce papers (decree nisi or absolute)
a gender recognition certificate
college or university union card, education certificate or PASS proof of age card (issued after June 2014)
Again, these documents don’t need to be in your new name as long as you also send a deed poll.  Contacting HMRC and asking for proof of your National Insurance number would be one of the simplest ways of getting one of these documents if you don’t have any.
In terms of changing your name in general, it might help you to write a list of all the places you can think of that you need to update your name (this website has a list which might be a good starting place, although not all might be applicable to you), and tick them off as you go.

“Telling you from France that you need masks, distancing and vaccine passports if you are to get case numbers down. Or you could just shut the hospitals and tell people to take a lemsip. What we’re all doing in Europe is learning to live with it. The UK is learning to ignore it.
I feel I should expand this a little. I’m not talking ‘lockdown’ here - I honestly don’t there’s a need for that. I’m talking about ways of really living with Covid. Because lockdown is a word UKGovt uses as a weapon, to scare you and make you think it’s the only alternative.
But it takes mandated action, everyone to do it. I haven’t seen an unmasked person in my supermarket since pre pandemic. What about exemptions? I’ve never heard of any. My best chum is severely asthmatic. Her doctor told her if she couldn’t cope with a mask she should stay home.
He wasn’t being cruel or unsympathetic, he was speaking as a doctor. Because she almost certainly couldn’t survive Covid. Rules are firm, but based on medical judgment. Schoolchildren have become accustomed to wear masks in class. They forget to take them off even when they can.
I want to see the UK thrive, but lies from UKGovt ministers place everyone in medical and economic peril. Kwarteng went on the media this morning and lied to you. Probably said something about ‘too much anger in politics’ as well. He’s wrong. Anonymous tweets aren’t the problem.
Anonymous offshore accounts, backhanded contracts to chums, your taxes spent on fancy painted aeroplanes instead of decent pensions and benefits for those in need are the problem - YOU SHOULD BE ANGRY ABOUT THAT! You should also be angry that Covid is being used as a deliberate attack on the NHS so it can be given away to the chums of the very politicians who should strengthen and preserve it, so you can get health insurance at eye watering prices. They aren’t working for you - they are stealing from you. Take action into your own hands.
Nothing difficult. Wear a mask. Stay out of crowded places. Work from home if you have a choice. Get vaccinated. These things YOU control. And vote for someone else - after all, who could possibly be worse?
Finally I keep being told that I mean England. I don’t, I mean UK. Mask mandates enforced by law, vaccine passports for every public leisure venue no matter the size & a renewed emphasis on distancing are required. Because if we decide against eradication, at least take control.“-Margaret

Travel 2021-Getting Started Again: Updated as of July 14, 2021:
March 11, 2021 marked the one-year anniversary since the World Health Organization declared Coronavirus was a pandemic. For one-year much of the world’s commerce and travel has come to a halt.  However, as COVID-19 vaccinations within the United States and abroad have become widespread, summer vacation 2021 is back on albeit, at a lesser level than past years.
While many pandemic travel restrictions are being eased, many of us are still waiting to take our 2021 vacation. The good news is that as of July summer vacations are starting to roll out after finding the right destination. Those close to home, such as road trips and hiking national parks, have been top choices followed by Mexico and the Caribbean.
The long awaited good news is that most of Europe has just started to welcome foreign tourists. The challenge is that individual countries in the European Union have flexibility to make their own rules as well adding to the uncertainty. In addition, as conditions vary worldwide, there can be last minute changes before you leave home or while abroad.
Canada is still only open for essential travel.
Good News on the Cruise Front:  “Cruising is Back!”
On June 26, the Celebrity Edge, was the first large cruise ship to set sail from a US port since March 14, 2020. On that date, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had issued a “No Sail” order.  The Edge with CDC agreement departed with 95 percent of its passengers and crew fully vaccinated.  Next Royal Caribbean International’s Freedom of the Seas sailed from Miami after successfully completing a test run under CDC guidelines.

Travel 2021-Getting Started Again:
Practical Advice – Know before you go:
Read the fine print: “Open to foreign tourists” can mean many things: (i) negative COVID-19 tests required, (ii) proof of vaccination, (iii) quarantine on arrival and/or (iv) special COVID-19 surcharges. For example, on the latter, Cambodia was charging an entry fee of $2,000 to cover the tourist’s potential cost for medical services. Beyond COVID-19, researching local and national regulations can be eye opening. For example, can you name the popular destinations where it is illegal to: (i) drive without an international driver’s license? (ii) bring with you certain personal prescription drugs legal at home? (iii) take photos of individuals without permission (excepting unrecognizable ones or crowded street scenes)?
No vacancies: Check out off-season offerings in national parks if they are already filled to capacity for this summer.
Major attractions: Even though many are reopening, still check to see if a reservation or ticket is needed. This can also apply to museums and other venues even where there is no charge.
Choose a tour or cruise: That way you can leave it to the travel provider to track the constantly changing country restrictions.
Going abroad: Book a single-country destination to skip being caught between shifting national restrictions.
Plan B: Consider having a backup or alternate destination in case your first choice destination falls through. For example, if your first choice is abroad, find one at home or closer to home.
Looking ahead to 2022: If you vacation plans are still on hold for 2021, take advantage of great 2022 deals being offered now.
If you choose a solo road trip for your summer vacation, take a look at our tips for the ultimate road trip in 2021. (Are you the member of an automobile club? Alternatively, are you prepared to change a tire on a remote byway?)
Consider travel by train both in North America and Europe. In the US, Amtrak Vacations include long-haul coast-to-coast journeys in style with private sleepers. See also our America Train – Solo Travel Adventures. In Europe, take a look at Great Rail Journeys.
Join a small ship cruise in the US to Alaska or a  luxury oceanliner by plane or rail to major ports. As long popular in Europe, local train services offer the most flexibility and can whisk you from an international flight to Europe’s top river cruises.
With the EU and many other countries looking to vaccination passports, get vaccinated if you have not already.  While some drug stores were giving a free service to laminate vaccination cards, I created my own plastic cover which could easily be reopened. Besides hanging on carefully to your certificate, scan a copy on your computer, photograph it on your phone and have your doctor make a copy as well.
“Not Home Alone for the Holidays”? Start now, and find a way to celebrate the holidays from solo adventure tours to singles cruises and holiday markets.
