People think narcolepsy means you fall fast asleep without warning, and the boss gets furious that someone's snoring during his big speech at the important business meeting. Or you're checking your baggage at the airport, right, and clunk! Now your hands are folded neatly under your head as you zip across a series of conveyor belts, nestled between suitcases and boxes, and when you wake up in Timbuktu. I have not ever dropped to the floor and started snoring like a cartoon character. I didn't get an official diagnosis until just a few months ago, at age 34, because my experience with narcolepsy is so unlike anything I'd ever seen depicted in media that the possibility I might have it never even crossed my mind. When I was 28, I was working as a high school paraeducator. I was helping one of my kids on a health class assignment, a research project on narcolepsy. It was the fist time I'd seen any real information about the symptoms. Insomnia? That was a surprise. That's the opposite of what I thought narcolepsy was. Sleep paralysis? Weird, I have a long history of sleep paralysis, but it happens to everybody, right? And what is this word, cataplexy? Wait, that scary thing where my body goes limp and I lose all muscle tone has a name??? I called a doctor as soon as I could, begged for a sleep study, made the test's technicians laugh with how off-the-scales my results were, and returned to the doctor to be told... "Well, narcolepsy is really rare." I said, "Yes. It is rare. And some people have it. And I think I might be one of them." My current doctor, a specialist who was able to make a diagnosis from those same test results, says it's not common, but it's not that rare. My old doctor, like most people, just didn't know anything about narcolepsy. So let me contribute to public understanding in my small, anecdotal way. Narcolepsy is when I unconsciously take down all the little things that were stuck to the decorative shelf in my bedroom (I still haven't found all the pushpins I removed) before sleepwalking into someone else's room at 4:00 in the morning, all while dreaming about C Bear and Jamal. So when you bump into your shelf and it starts to fall - Narcolepsy, y'all! Pushpins in your hand and LEGO on the floor - Narcolepsy, y'all! When you sleepwalk down the hall and open up the door - Narcolepsy, y'all! It's the funky sleep disorder we don't fully understand

Anthony Terrell Smith (born March 3, 1966), known by his stage name Tone Lōc, is a rapper, actor, voice actor, and producer. He is known for his raspy voice, his hit songs “Wild Thing” and “Funky Cold Medina”, for which he was nominated for a Grammy Award, and for being featured in “We’re All in the Same Gang”, a collaborative single by the West Coast Rap All-Stars.

He has performed in several feature films, including Poetic Justice, Blank Check, and Posse. As a voice actor, he has voiced characters in several TV cartoon series such as King of the Hill and C-Bear and Jamal and was featured in the animated film Bébé’s Kids, playing the wise-cracking baby Pee Wee. Some (animated) Black History for my Americans. Found out all the episodes are on the Roku, so I got to relive some nostalgia.

C-Bear and Jamal first aired in 1996, and it featured relatable lessons taught through Jamal's stuffed teddy bear, C-Bear. It only lasted 13 episodes, but I definitely remember watching reruns on vhs tapes.

JAMAL AND ROS TEETHERS

maybe lil messy grammar bc copy psted from messages to bea and liv !

bc of the fact jam was so nice abt the paci he found in ros room (even tho it wasnt even romans) then i think roman would decide to tell jamal abt his teethers. and like its at a point where hes already told jamal about his age dreaming, and is more comfy mentioning his littlespace and has even been kind of little around jamal a few times

and hes like ready to let himself be fully little bc jamal has constantly assured him its okay and roman has gotten good at requesting that reassurance whenever he feels insecure abt it

so one day he turns up to stay at jamals apartment for the weekend - and he put his teether in his overnight bag

so he starts being little after dinner or smth on the first night and its all okay, he is kind of just testing the waters a little but jamal is just rlly natural and nice abt it and barely changes his behaviour with roman, hes just more child-friendly and talks a little more like a teacher

and while jamal goes to the bathroom or does the dishes or smth roman RLLY quickly heart racing fingers shaking runs to his bag and gets his teether out and dashes back to sit on the living room floor and hides the teether against his chest with his hand

then when jamal comes back, ro is quiet and blushy and jamal thinks its bc hes being mischievous and he sees roman is hiding something so hes like "roman~ what are you hiding?" with his voice he uses when ro is little

then roman wiggles his knees a lil and bravely asks "can i use it?"

but jamal gets a lil worried not knowing what it is and frowns and crouches by roman on the floor and says "that depends what it is, baby. can i please see it?"

and roman blushes rlly RLLY hot and drops his hand a little to show its a teether and jamal just looks and gives a little smile and nods "of course you can! i like that its a teddy bear"

roman giggles a lil in relief "me too..."

and jamal strokes his hair "i was scared it was something dangerous!"

roman gasps rlly innocent and childish and playful "like.. like a rocket!!!"

jamal nods VERY seriously but hes smiling "yeah i thought u had a rocket in your hand!! if i wasnt careful you couldve been blasted off to space!!"

and they joke and play (jam being a comedian is SO good for playful little roman) and roman doesnt use the teether til later because hes so conscious that the attention is on it now

but he slips it in his mouth with a blush when theyre watching a movie and cuddling later on. theres no sign jam even notices except that he holds roman a lil tighter

then the next morning theyre in bed and jamal mentions that roman was really cute yesterday and he doesnt mention WHY but roman kinda knows and gets embarassed

then very unsubtly jamal says "you know if you want me to i can keep a teether here for you?"

and roman is like >///< "yes maybe please thank you....."

@a-little-bit-flustered : him keeping a teether at his for roman and roman trying to be all sneaky and slipping it in when he thinks nobody is looking like 👀 but the jamal being all like “you’re so cute!!” and making him all flustered but also really grateful to have such an understanding boyfriend....

AWWWW the idea of roman being at jamals and he wakes up early in the morning and sneaks out of bed to get his teether and hes tiptoeing and trying to close the fridge super slowly and gently and he wiggles back in bed thinking jam is still asleep and sighs in relief and closes his eyes and starts chewing the teether

then he hears "morning, cutie" and opens his eyes and jamal is smiling at him rlly soft and roman blushes bright pink and shoves the pillow over jamals face to stop him from looking HHSDHDHD

WAHHH and jamal saw roman do a lil silly tiptoe walk and opened his eyes after ro climbed in bed just in time to see roman close his eyes and put the teether in his mouth and smile a lil and his face go rlly calm for a few seconds before jamal spoke up wahh

@a-little-bit-flustered ; 🥺🥺🥺 WAHHHHH THEY ARE SO SWEET!! omg roman turning all grumpy and pouty but STILL nibbling on the teether like and jamal having to stifle his giggles because he can’t laugh at his boyfriend but also he’s literally the cutest lil angel ever even when he’s in a mood ahsjdjfghh

WAAHH like he isnt a caregiver and barely a babysitter but hes just so supprotive and nice and if roman did need a cg jamal would do it bc he cares so much, but roman doesnt need it from him so this is all they need u know

like jamal isnt taking care of him (at least not too obviously) hes just having fun

...

one day a few weeks after that, jamal is cuddlin roman while he chews his teether....

roman is hiding it by sitting in between jams legs leaning back against his chest but romans legs are kicking around happily while they watch a disney movie and his singing is a bit muffled and lisped by the teether and jamal just thought he looked so calm and happy and CUTE on that morning jamal caught him sneaking with his teether..... he rlly wants to see again bc its CUTE

so jamal just gently and slowly leans over romans shoulder a lil and roman doesnt react he is so caught up in the movie

then jamal moves his face down to press their cheeks together and still ro doesnt look away from the screen, so jamal turns his head to kiss romans cheek, and that makes roman hum

and then jamal pulls back a lil just to see roman smiling around his teether..... and roman doesnt notice him looking at him..

and jam is just smiling so softly seeing roman chewing the teether with his eyes bright and wide and happy lookin at the movie

then eventually roman readjusts his head a little without thinkin and is lenaing away from jam, but jamal automaticaly puts his fingers on romans chin and angles his head back bc he WANNA SEE

and then roman realsies jamal has been watching him with his teether and he blushes and whines "JAMMM" and goes >:c and pulls his teether away and hides it in his sleeve

and jamal goes "im sorrryyyyy youre jsut so cuuuuute" like whining but still smiling bc he RLLY WANTS TO SEE hes actually disappointed hahshs

but roman goes ò///ó and crosses his arms and keeps watchin the film and he is grumpy for the rest of it HAHSHSHS

and as they watch the film roman is pouting and crossed arms and teether gone and every few minutes jamal rubs his head on romans and kisses his cheek and :

"babyyy im sorry.............. dont you wanna use your-"

Coach: Kyle Shanahan. Notes: Running game scheme is a work of staggering genius. Best player is a tight end for some reason. Went to the Super Bowl last year.

Arizona Cardinals. Key players: Kyler Murray (QB), Larry Fitzgerald (WR), DeAndre Hopkins (WR), Christian Kirk (WR), Budda Baker (S), Patrick Peterson (CB). Coach: Kliff Kingsbury. Notes: Runs many wide receivers, in scheme Kingsbury got from coaching college. Used to be bad, but getting better each year. Kyler is very small.

Los Angeles Rams. Key players: Jared Goff (QB), Cooper Kupp (WR), Andrew Whitworth (T), Darrell Henderson (RB), Aaron Donald (DI), Johnny Hekker (P). Coach: Sean McVay. DC: Used to be Wade Phillips, but not anymore. Notes: Runs a lot of plays from the same formation. Coach is very smart. Made the Super Bowl two years ago. Best player is a defensive tackle, for some reason.

NFC East (the worst division in NFL history):

New York Giants. Key players: Daniel Jones (QB), Saquon Barkley (RB). Coach: Joe, uh... Douglas. GM: Dave Gettleman. Notes: Spent a huge amount of draft capital on players the numbers said weren’t worth it. Seems accurate.

Philadelphia Eagles. Key players: Carson Wentz (QB), Jalen Hurts (backup QB), literally everyone else is injured. Oh, Jason Peters (T). Coach: Doug Peterson. GM: Howie Roseman. Notes: Everyone is injured. Everyone. Went to the Super Bowl 3 years ago and won with their backup QB.

Dallas Cowboys. Key players: Dak Prescott (QB, injured), Andy Dalton (backup QB, injured), No one of note (third-string QB), Amari Cooper (WR), CeeDee Lamb (WR), Ezekiel Elliott (RB), Leighton Vander Esch (LB), Greg Zuerlein (K), I could probably name more if I tried hard enough. Coach: Mike McCarthy. GM: Jerry Jones. Owner: Also Jerry Jones. Notes: Every year they have good players and lose anyway. Paid their running back instead of their quarterback. Also, now they have no healthy quarterback.

Washington [used to have a racist name]. Key players: Dwayne Haskins (benched QB), Alex Smith (QB... whose leg does not work), Kyle Allen (QB), Terry McLaurin (WR), Chase Young (DE), Montez Sweat (DE). Coach: Ron Rivera. Owner: Dan Snyder, who is the worst human being in the NFL, and that is saying a lot. Notes: No one cares about the football, Dan Snyder should be in jail. Also, Ron Rivera has cancer and Alex Smith’s leg injury almost killed him, so those guys deserve better.

NFC North:

Detroit Lions. Key Players: Matthew Stafford (QB), um, I should remember some more. Jeff Okudah (CB). Coach: Matt Patricia. Notes: Stafford deserves better. Patricia keeps signing ex-Patriots players, and it doesn’t work, presumably because the good ones are current-Patriots-players.

Minnesota Vikings. Key players: Kirk Cousins (QB), Adam Thielen (WR), Justin Jefferson (WR), Dalvin Cook (RB), many good defensive players whose names I don’t know. Coach: Mike Zimmer. Notes: Historically a good defense and just missing a competent QB. Paid a lot for an average QB; defense sucks now for some reason. Also, runs a lot.

Chicago Bears. Key Players: Mitchell Trubisky (QB), Nick Foles (QB), Allen Robinson (WR), Khalil Mack (DE). Coach: Matt Nagy. Notes: Has been wasting great defensive performances with poor to average quarterback play since World War II.

Green Bay Packers. Key Players: Aaron Rodgers (QB), Davante Adams (WR), Allan Lazard (WR), Aaron Jones (RB), Jamaal Williams (RB), Robert Tonyan (TE), David Bakhtiari (T), Za’Darius Smith (DE), Preston Smith (DE). Coach: Matt LaFleur. GM: Brian Gutekunst. Owner: “The fans.” Notes: Has started a hall-of-famer at quarterback every season since before you were born. Winning big but the analytics say they’re getting a bit lucky lately.

NFC South:

Atlanta Falcons. Key players: Matt Ryan (QB), Julio Jones (WR), I forgot the new WR’s name but he looks legit, Todd Gurley (RB). Coach that was recently fired: Dan Quinn. Notes: Have become known for inexplicably blowing enormous leads late in games. It’s quite funny, at this point.

New Orleans Saints. Key players: Drew Brees (QB), Michael Thomas (WR), Alvin Kamara (RB), Taysom Hill (listed as backup QB but just kinda does weird shit on offense), Jameis Winston (backup QB), Cam Jordan (DE), I should remember the cornerback’s name. Coach: Sean Payton. Notes: Known for having tons of talent every year, salary cap be damned, and then losing in heartbreaking fashion in the playoffs. Brees is getting old.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Key players: Tom Brady (QB), Mike Evans (WR), Chris Godwin (WR), this one WR who can go eat shit, Rob Gronkowski (TE), Antoine Winfield Jr (S), Vita Vea (DI). Coach: Bruce Arians. Notes: Signed Tom Brady. It’s working pretty well. Defense is top-tier. The most balanced team.

AFC North:

Baltimore Ravens

Pittsburgh Steelers

Cleveland Browns

um... Cincinnati Bengals? Maybe?

AFC East:

New York Jets

Oh, so the other NFC South team is the Carolina Panthers. Of course. Key players: Teddy Bridgewater (QB), Christian McCaffrey (RB and also arguably their best receiver), Yetur Gross-Matos (DE). Coach: Matt Rhule. Notes: Rebuilding their team this year, but quietly doing pretty well, considering.

Alright, I’m gonna stop there. Didn’t even get to the other half of the NFL, let alone started to try and list NBA/MLB/NHL teams, which would have gone extremely poorly. Story for another day.

Also, uh, yeah, this is a normal amount to know about football as someone who doesn’t watch football, oooobviously...

Meet the sons of former NFL players taking over the 2021 draft class

Want to feel old? The 2021 draft is filled with sons of NFL players you used to watch.

There’s a not-so-fun cycle of being a sports fan. As a kid, your idols are all adults — viewed from far away, and serving as inspiration. The next jump happens in college, when suddenly players entering the league are your age, and it’s kind of neat. In your early twenties it’s still fun, and people slightly younger than you are becoming superstars.

The pivot begins in your late 20s. At this point you suffer the crippling weight of realization that players destined to be millionaires will be more financially successful than you ever will, and they’re a decade younger than you. Now, I’m reaching the final stage: Hilarity. This is when the players you watched as a kid have their own children entering the league. A grim realization of the unstoppable passage of time,

And on that cheery note, I’d like you to share in my grim existential crisis by learning about all the players entering the 2021 NFL Draft who had parents you watch play years ago, and some who entered the league in recent years you may have missed. It’s my hope that you’ll feel terrible about all this when it’s over, because misery loves company.

Patrick Surtain II, CB — Alabama

The highest-rated prospects of the NFL children this class, Patrick Surtain II is, you guessed it, the son of Patrick Surtain. Surtain Sr. played 10 years in the NFL at cornerback for the Dolphins and Chiefs, being named to the All-Pro team in 2002 and 2003.

Surtain Sr. was a highly-rated small-school prospect when he entered the league out of Southern Miss, but his son is a very different player at the same point in his career. A five star recruit who played for Alabama, Surtain II has prototypical size for the modern cornerback position at 6’2, 202 pounds — and is expected to be one of the first defensive backs off the board in the draft.

Unlike his father, who needed to prove himself in the NFL, Surtain II will be expected to enter the league from day one, not just as one of the best defensive backs on his team, but ready to take on a leadership position.

Will he be better than dad?

It’s likely. That’s not a knock on Patrick Surtain Sr, but rather an acknowledgment of just how incredible Surtain II is. Yes, he was on a dominant Alabama team, but between his time in Tuscaloosa and his tutelage under his father we’re going to see a monster in the NFL.

Asante Samuel Jr, CB — Florida State

When you talk about a chip off the old block, this is one heck of a father-son comparison. Asante Samuel Jr. is the exact same height as his dad, and just one pound lighter than his father’s playing weight.

Once seen as a lock first round pick, Samuel Jr. has fallen a little down draft boards after putting in an excellent, but not transcendent final season for the Seminoles, but he’ll still be selected on day two, no question. There are still things he needs to learn to become a true force in the NFL, but that’s really appropriate, considering his dad did the same.

While Asante Samuel was drafted by the Patriots and played four years in New England, most remember him for his time in Philadelphia. The prize of the 2008 free agency class, Samuel quickly signed with the Eagles and became one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.

For three straight years he was named to the Pro Bowl, making the All-Pro team in two of these years. A big-play, ball-hawking cornerbacks, Samuel wasn’t just known for locking down top receivers, but absolutely turning games with big-time interceptions that teams crave.

Will he be better than dad?

Asante Samuel was one of the best defensive players in the entire league for a good chunk of his career. There’s possibility here, but it will require a little humility from Samuel Jr, and a willingness to learn the finer points of playing cornerback in the NFL.

Jaycee Horn, CB — South Carolina

This is a fun case of seeing a son completely flip positions from his father. Everyone knows the great Joe Horn, who played wide receiver in the NFL from 1996-2007, most notably with the New Orleans Saints, but Jacee Horn has become a force of a cornerback at South Carolina.

Similar to Asante Samuel Jr, Horn was once seen as a first round lock but has been sliding lower with concerns whether his game was too based on the ability to make contact with receivers in the college game, which may not translate to the NFL. That sounds a lot more dire than it really is, because Horn will be a day two pick for sure — and would likely start for most teams in the NFL from the jump.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Jaycee adapts to the NFL. Here’s a kid who, presumably, spent many of his formative years covering his dad. That will be interesting to watch. The biggest tragedy of Joe Horn’s career is that he caught on too late. After languishing on the Chiefs’ special teams unit for years, it wasn’t until he arrived on the Saints that he showed his potential — often playing much larger than his 6’1 frame would suggest. A jump ball master, Horn would out-muscle smaller DBs and come down with ball, being a nightmare matchup for opposing defensive coordinators.

Will he be better than dad?

That’s a difficult question considering they play different positions. Joe Horn was a four time Pro Bowler for the Saints, and probably deserved more than he ended up getting — but everything is really on Jaycee Horn as he develops in the NFL. If the metric we’re using is Pro Bowl appearances and All-Pro teams he certainly has a chance, because his dad felt so often like he was on the outside looking in.
