On one hand, I understand where Delenn’s coming from with the whole Lochley-and-Sheridan’s-shared-past thing. But, on the other hand… when in the prior three years did Sheridan not make it absolutely clear (via his actions) that one of his favorite things to do (a hobby, even) is to make an emotionally closed-off sapphic be diplomatic to those whom she can’t stand?

THE ONE AT THE CROSSROADS  ::  questioning yourself again?  well,  it's a hard choice is it not.  you always decide you've made your mind but you seem to nevertheless return to this state of uncertainty.  are you good or evil?  dark or light?  alas,  I am not fit for such details in morality.  In my slightly skewed sight of it,  neither truly exist.  they are but a mindset,  but,  mindset or not,  they still give you quite the anxieties,  hm?  you are one who has lived in fear,  your heart is hidden,  and you don't know who to trust.  you doubt you can even trust yourself.  the caustic words of poisonous people have corroded into your skull.  "you are evil. you are a monster.  you are bad."  well,  that is indeed a bunch of poppycock,  mind my language,  for the only one who may decide that is you.  my dear,  you are torn between never allowing others to hurt the ways you hurt,  and from running away from all who might harm you again,  with gnashing teeth.  you are a cornered animal who has been kicked by the ones it trusted.  you do not know whether to trust again,  for your mind is screaming,  don't.  but if I may,  you can be both.  it is not the question of whether you are good or evil, it is the question,  what do I deserve and how might I reach that?  you do not deserve pain,  correct?  so never chase that.  instead,  kindly decline and flee from those like your past assailants,  but trust the ones who you know are good.  sometimes you will find people to be a messy combination of both pain and love,  but so are you and I.  my advice is to simply be kind,  but be willing to question.  always question,  always wonder.  do not give away your heart on a silver platter my dear.  it is worth far more than the sun himself,  but don't fail to allow healing.  you deserve good things in life.  so,  as you stand between two roads,  walk between the third you just now have noticed.  life seems to be made of entirely preposterous choices,  but if you look close enough,  you'll reveal the right ones that are normally hidden from sight.  breathe,  my dear.  things will be well.  trust yourself,  and carve your own path.

B5 03e14 Ship of Tears previous episode • table of contents
The news from Earth is back, but it's fully propaganda now.
I'm glad Sheridan's getting to play in the starfuries for a bit. He definitely needs some chill, fun, flying time.
Dang, it's Walter Koenig! My guy, Bester. Can't wait to see what evil shenanigans he's up to now!
He's such a good villain. So reasonable. So...off.
I don't get why the gang are still stonewalling G'Kar...it's ever more fucked up the longer they keep doing it. C'mon, be better.
I forgot about the new uniforms for a bit but I like them. Looking snazzy! I like the lines and random patch of color.
I genuinely wonder if Bester intentionally goaded her into hitting him. Glad PsiCorps are against the Shadows...it's a low bar to clear, since the Shadows are against life, but still glad.
This is a huge enemy-of-my-enemy stretch, though, considering elements within PsiCorps have been directly enemies with B5 interests themselves. Still, cooperation has got to be key against the shadows.
Wow, this is the biggest fight I've seen Delenn and John have! But seriously for the best to read G'Kar in on all the intel. He brought his intel to them! it's insulting they haven't read him in to their own intel.
Oh shit, they disclosed the existence of the Secret Ship to Bester! That's a hell of a move, as is it for Bester to just plop into the Captain's chair on the bridge. Is that a Star Trek nod? Chekov never commanded the Enterprise in any of the episodes and never sat in the chair, so Bester steals the chair for a second in B5? Cute.
I gotta pay close attention to Delenn and G'Kar's talk. Delenn's decision to obsfucate was directly because of the Grey Council's decision not to share any info. Delenn's arguing it was a good decision, because if they'd allied openly with the Narns from the beginning, the Shadows would have wiped out the Narns entirely instead of only enabling the Centauri to genocide and oppress them.
I find G'Kar's reaction a bit...odd. He talks himself around to agreeing with her, which I find a bit shameful of the writers. It cannot ever be a good thing that a people were wiped out without any foreknowledge from supposed allies. Maybe it wouldn't have changed the outcome in terms of life, but who could say what they may have done?
They have a sort of tractor beam and caught a ship, cool. Weapon's supplies, but it seems to be a person in pained stasis. Dun dun dun.
It's so wild that they took Bester into their confidence enough to take him on the White Star when they're known G'Kar all along and he still doesn't know it exists! Wild, wild set of priorities on information sharing. Bester has been a literally mortal threat to them all, G'Kar has never been a threat to any of them but Londo. And that was fair anyhow.
A shadow body? Or a different species that's allied? I thought the shadows were multi-limbed, spindly things.
Not just one person in a tube, but over a  hundred! Ivanova called them sleeper tubes, but Dr Franklin calls them cryotubes.
They have impants on either side of their cerebral cortexes, the lady they were waking up slowly came to screaming and asking why they were doing this. Bester identifies her as "a blip," a telepath who refused to take suppressants or join the corps. This lady is P-11 or P-12.
And she has a terrible nightmare/flashback to what looks to be three individuals, the same species as the unidentified body they found earlier. Leaning towards species allied with the shadows.
P-12 lady made herself a nest of wires? And first thing she tries to do is lure Bester in and attack him. Good instincts, lol. And she's in pain, she says. Bester claims she has no reason attack him or sabotage the station by ripping out all the wires, and she automatically shoots at Bester's PsiCorps broach.
Her name is Carolyn - I guess the shadows already got their hands on her and into her brain? Well that's harrowing. idk what her shared telepathy with Bester was about, even with Bester's explanation. He met her when she was caught and sent to the re-education center, and immediately fell in love with her. Tried to make her experience in the center better...I guess? Bigger quarters and more food. Yikes. And then he knocked her up. No mention of if she had anything to say about that?? jesus.
Hm, Shadows use people as processing for their ships? They are acting like they've talked about it before, but it's new info to me, and horrifying info at that.
Bester says his promise to keep her and their baby safe is the only promise he's ever made that he meant a damn. And that if they can help her, he's 100% on Sheridan's side. Handy! If they can pull it off and get those next level impants out of her or something.
Ivanova says he'll turn on them the second it's all over and I'm inclined to believe her. Maybe he'd play nicer for longer if he achieved some of his goals for telepaths - they are the future, he says.
Did Garibaldi finally teach himself enough Narn to read some of G'Kar's book? Good for him.
The Shadows are weak to telepaths, hence probably the 100+ telepaths being made into ship components. And this info is so timely, because the Shadows are attacking a place right now! Telepaths! We ride at space dawn!
Kosh...

Mr John Tracy refrained from rolling his eyes. Once again his brothers had urged him to join them at the assemblies and despite all his arguments against, including the necessity of remaining in Marlborough Square as companion to his youngest brother, the Captain, Mr Virgil and Mr Gordon had somehow transported him to the carriage and the frankly overcrowded rooms.
As was usual, the rooms were filled with ambitious mothers, anxious daughters and gentlemen navigating a dangerous and delicate path between both. For this, he thought, his books and research were left unattended at home? At least he was not bound to remain at his brothers' sides and so he began to weave his way through the ballroom towards the refreshment rooms where a cool glass of lemonade might be had.
He glanced at a small group standing near the dance floor, his eye instantly caught by a young lady with eyes as bright and vibrant a hue of blue as his eldest brother. Her dark hair, so dark a brown as to be almost black, was piled high on her head, curls delightfully framing her face. She wore an elegant and fitted gown of pale purple silk, the latest in Paris fashion, and long white gloves, an ivory fan held in her hand. He knew how well the cut of his own coat fitted him, the fabric the colour of the night sky, and that the knee breeches and stockings showed his form to full advantage.
If he was surprised to notice her, her surprise at noticing him was no less and the pair blinked at each other for what felt like an eternity. Not pausing to bow, Mr John returned to where his brothers and Lady Hannah were standing, profiting from a moment where the Captain and Mr Virgil's attentions were elsewhere to ask Lady Hannah quietly who the group might be, certain that her encyclopedic knowledge of the Ton would include the strangers.
"Who?" she asked, looking to where he was discreetly pointing.
"Let me think, ah yes. Miss Shore, Lieutenant George Sheridan, Captain Troy Tempest, both naval officers from America I believe and who most likely will be returning to New York at the end of the season, and their English cousins Mr Adam Tempest and Miss Selene Tempest. Son and daughter of Sir Rufus and Lady Celia Tempest. They have an estate in --shire."
Looking at Mr John in some amusement, Lady Hannah smiled. "Are you feeling suddenly inclined to dance this evening, Mr John?"
"Uh, well, uh. Perhaps. I'm not sure I know all the steps, but-"
"But with the right partner, Mr John, an incomplete knowledge of the steps is immaterial. Shall we walk?"
She took his arm and moved down the room, inexorably leading him onwards until she suddenly stopped with a quiet cry of delight.
"Miss Tempest! Miss Shore! I had not thought to see you here, how delightful. Captain Tempest? Mr Tempest? May I have the honour of presenting Mr John Tracy?"
At that moment, the orchestra struck up for the next dance. Lieutenant Sheridan invited Miss Shore to dance, Captain Tempest smiling benevolently at them. Moving to where Mr Tempest stood by his sister, lowering her voice, Lady Hannah spoke.
"I do apologise, Mr Tempest, for my audacious request, but Miss Tempest, would you by any chance have this next dance for Mr John?"
Mr John blushed at Lady Hannah's forthright request, Miss Tempest gave an elegant curtsy and allowed herself to be led into the dance and with a nod of thanks, her ladyship returned to her own party where Captain Tracy and Mr Virgil were standing, quite amazed at the sight of their younger brother, apparently entranced, following the dance surefootedly and without the slightest mistake.
"How did you manage that?" asked the Captain.
"The magic of a ballroom combined with the beauty of a young lady, Captain."

Sheridan: What is her name?
Ivanova: Chelsea, the prettiest barista who’s ever served me a double shot half-caffeine caramel macchiato with a dusting of cinnamon. I want to talk to her, but whenever I do, all I can say is “mmmm.”
Sheridan: Maybe you used up all your words ordering that coffee.

I’ve been playing with my B5/Halo crossover AU lately and finally wrote the intro.
The thing that’s kept me from writing more here is I can’t decide if I want Chyler in this timeline or not. I’ve been leaning toward no because FSATAS predates MWAS, but Chyler being around feels natural now and I kind of default to it. But I feel like I should do something different. But I’ve tried to make up OCs to fill the first officer role and none of them click. Sheridan gets Delenn, shouldn’t Lasky get some action too? Don’t we need a scene with our two captains grousing about their women?
Tumblr media
You aren’t here for this. I’m probably never going to actually write this crossover so I don’t know why I’m agonizing so much. Here’s what you ARE here for.
If Commander Susan Ivanova had learned one thing in her two years as Babylon 5’s first officer, she had learned that situations could change rapidly.
Therefore, it shouldn’t have surprised her when a ship she didn’t recognize appeared seemingly out of nowhere right outside Command and Control.
She was surprised anyway.
It’s huge, was Ivanova’s first thought. Bigger than anything the Earth Alliance had and bigger than any alien craft she could think of. Long, dark gray with a blue glow at what Ivanova assumed was the stern and several thin structures protruding around the hull. Sensors? Weapons?
“What’s that?” Someone asked.
“Excellent question,” Ivanova replied dryly as she took in the scene. This huge, unfamiliar ship looked adrift.
“Lieutenant, did we detect a jump point?” Ivanova asked, turning away from the sight outside of the station.
“No, ma’am,” Lieutenant David Corwin answered from his station near the back, looking as befuddled as Ivanova felt. “Should I try to open a channel?”
“Do it,” Ivanova ordered. She hit her communicator. “Ivanova to Sheridan. Captain, we need you in C&C.”
****
The UNSC Infinity dropped out of slipspace like a rock.
Pain exploded in Captain Thomas Lasky’s ribs, then his knees, as he crashed into the holotable at the center of the bridge and then the floor.
“What the hell was that?” The captain demanded of no one and everyone. He grabbed the edge of the table and hauled himself to stand.
“I don’t know, sir,” Infinity’s AI said, his golden avatar flickering in and out.
The bridge lights dimmed, then surged, then went out completely, then surged again.
Lasky heard a shriek from behind him. His comms officer was hunched over, blood gushing out of her nose, onto her panel, and all over the deck.
Oh, God. “O’Hara! Hang on.” Lasky fumbled under the table for the first aid kit and sighed in frustration as he cracked it open. The roll of gauze wouldn’t do much against O’Hara’s nosebleed, but it was all he had.
“Hey. Hey.” Lasky hurriedly balled up the gauze and pressed it to the lieutenant’s face. “Lean forward.” He crouched beside O’Hars guided her free hand to the bridge of her nose. “Pinch.”
O’Hara nodded through a whimper. Lasky absently noticed the blood dripping down his sleeve.
The ship lurched and Lasky grabbed O’Hara’s chair to keep from falling over. The lights dimmed and finally returned to normal brightness.
Lasky looked around to see his crew pulling themselves off the floor, calling for and offering help, asking what was happening. At first glance, no one seemed seriously injured.
No one here, at least. Maybe the rest of the ship had similarly lucked out.
“Roland, what happened?” Lasky stood up.
Eight inches of yellowish-orange, 1940s-style pilot assembled on the table. “Infinity dropped out of slipspace unexpectedly.”
Lasky squelched a comment about stating the obvious. “Do we know why?”
“No, Captain.”
“Where are we?” Lasky took a breath and winced as his ribs protested. “Casualty reports?”
“None yet, sir, but it’s possible I’m not receiving—“
“Captain?” O’Hara interrupted. “I think we’re being hailed.”
****
“What’s going on?”
Ivanova looked over her shoulder at Babylon 5’s commanding officer. “See for yourself.”
Captain John Sheridan squinted out the viewport. “What is that thing?”
“That’s the question of the hour.”
“Definitely not one of ours,” Sheridan mused. “Doesn’t look like any alien ships I’ve seen.” He pointed. “No rotating sections.”
Ivanova frowned. Sheridan was right.
“You said it just appeared?” Sheridan asked. “No jump point or jump gate activation?”
“That’s right,” Ivanova confirmed.
“Can we talk to them?”
“Corwin’s working on it.”
“Commander, I’m having a hard time with that channel,” Corwin spoke up. “This vessel doesn’t seem to operate on any of our frequencies.”
“Their engine signatures don’t match anything we have on file, ma’am.” Another lieutenant added.
“Ivanova.”
Ivanova followed Sheridan’s gaze to the mystery ship.
“UNSC Infinity?” Sheridan read. “We don’t have a ship named Infinity.”
“If we do, it’s news to me,” Ivanova mused. “And I don’t know what ‘UNSC’ is supposed to mean.”
“I might have something!” Corwin called. “They might be able to hear us, Captain.”
Sheridan pushed the button. “This is Captain John Sheridan of Earth Alliance Station Babylon 5 to…” his brow furrowed slightly, like he couldn’t quite believe what he was saying. “UNSC Infinity. Do you need assistance?”
****
“It’s not a familiar frequency, sir,” O’Hara said shakily. The red-haired officer punched a few buttons with the hand not holding her now-useless wad of gauze. “I’m trying to isolate it.” She swiped at her watering eyes.
Lasky worriedly eyed the blood still pouring out of O’Hara’s nose and unthinkingly rubbed her back. “How you feeling, lieutenant?”
“If you want the truth, sir, I have felt better.”
Lasky chuckled and bit back another wince.
“I’ve got it! I’ve got it!” O’Hara announced. She shuddered and pinched her nose again. “Ow.”
Lasky clapped her shoulder. “Good work. Let’s hear it.”
“—ance? Peat—five—need—“”
“Can you clean it up?” Lasky asked.
O’Hara touched a few more buttons. “Trying, sir.” Her voice sounded a little stronger.
“—Babylon 5, do you need assistance?”
“What’s Babylon 5?” Lasky heard someone ask. He waved a hand for silence.
“Repeat, this is Captain John Sheridan of Earth Alliance Station Babylon 5 to UNSC Infinity, do you need assistance? Repeat, this is Earth Alliance Station Babylon 5–“
Lasky tapped his ear. O’Hara nodded and routed the transmission to his earpiece.
“—Captain John Sheridan of Earth Alliance Station Babylon 5 to UNSC Infinity, do you need assistance?”
Now might not be the time to ask questions, but if it were, Lasky would have asked what the hell the Earth Alliance was. “This is Captain Thomas Lasky of the UNSC Infinity, we read you, Babylon 5,” Lasky answered. But we have no idea who or what you are.
“Do you need assistance, Infinity?” The male voice on the other end asked.
“Ah,” Lasky looked around his bridge. Sparks flew, thumps and scuffles came from all corners, crew members verbalized their pain and confusion. “only all we can get.”
“Do you need medical assistance?” A woman’s voice said.
Lasky looked at O’Hara. “That’s affirmative.”
“Captain, I have reports now of injuries on all decks,” Roland said from the holotable. “Some major.”
Lasky closed his eyes briefly. “We could sure use a place to dock and sort out our situation.” He realized belatedly that this Babylon 5 might not even have that capacity and not for the first time cursed the lack of windows on the bridge. He understood the security angle, especially after the UNSC had lost so many ships to the Covenant, but he really needed to see what he was dealing with right now.
“We’ve got you covered, Infinity,” Sheridan didn’t sound flustered, so Lasky assumed the request must be feasible. “Do you have engine power?”
Lasky turned to the holotable. “Yes,” he said after reading through the preliminary damage report. “But I don’t know how much. We took quite a hit.”
“Copy, Infinity, we’re sending a Starfury escort your way,” Sheridan said. “Hold your position.”
What’s a Starfury? “Holding position. ETA?”
A short pause. “Twenty minutes.”
“Copy, Babylon 5. Infinity out.”
“Babylon 5 out.”
“Captain, I have external cameras online,” Roland said.
Lasky nodded. “Let’s meet our new friends.”
A few seconds later the main display lit up.
Babylon 5 didn’t look like anything Lasky had ever seen, human or otherwise. Ships swarmed around the five spherical rotating sections and what looked like solar panels. It was hard to tell on a screen (another reason Lasky wished for a simple window), but the station looked bigger than Infinity’s three and a half miles by a decent margin.
We stopped using rotational gravity a century ago. Lasky felt a strange unease wash over him.
“What is that?” Someone near the front breathed.
“Is it Sangheili?” Another officer wondered.
“It’s not ours, that’s for sure,” a third voice added.
“Sensor power is still minimal,” Roland said. “But neither Babylon 5 nor any craft I can detect matches the UNSC or Covenant.”
Lasky’s unease grew. The UNSC didn’t have stations. Neither did any Covenant races.
Where are we?
And how did we get here?
****
“Captain.”
Sheridan looked at his first officer.
“Are you sure about this?” Ivanova said quietly enough for no one else to hear. She flicked her eyes to Infinity. “We don’t know anything about these people. Where they’re from, how they got here.”
“No, Commander, we don’t,” Sheridan agreed. “But we’re obligated to assist any vessel in distress, and it looks to me like Infinity qualifies.” He offered what he hoped was a reassuring smile. “Guess we’ll have to get to know them. A stranger’s just a friend you haven’t met yet, right?”
Ivanova gave him a skeptical look. “If you say so, sir.” She straightened her uniform jacket. “I’ll go see to the preparations. We’re about to have a lot of company.”
Sheridan nodded his assent and looked through the transparent steel separating him from the vacuum of space.
“Where did you come from, UNSC Infinity?” Babylon 5’s captain murmured. “And how did you get here?”

Presents
PRESENTS: John is a Girl Dad It’s my Birthday! Prompt me things.
John Sheridan, the One Who Will Be, stared at the recipe for the pretty princess castle cake his youngest wanted for her birthday. He stared, sighed, and ran a hand over his face. This couldn’t be that hard. He’d brought the League together. He had gone to Z’ha’dum and survived! And yet here he was. Staring at a recipe for a pretty princess castle cake. Unsure about the difference between modelling chocolate and regular chocolate. He certainly had no idea what a patchwork cutter was.
“Do I have that?”
Staring out on the marble countertops, covered in bags of sugar and flour, eggs and milk, John wasn’t sure of his own name anymore, let alone how to make a cake. Thankfully, his wife took that moment to distract him. “There you are. How progresses the baking?”
Continue Reading Below or Read at AO3
“It…progresses. I’ve found a recipe; I have all the ingredients. I have enough pans.” Delenn stared at the five baking tins he’d bought, alongside half of the well-stocked kitchen’s utensils. “I even have a patchwork cutter. I think.”
Delenn kissed him firmly upon the mouth. She then smiled fondly at him, as she always did when he was just John and not Starkiller, Captain, Entil’Zha. “You are a wonderful father. Jadenn will be happy with anything you make. I highly doubt that David or Della remember their seventh birthday cake, so you do not need to go to so much…trouble. Perhaps you should make a traditional Minbari dessert for her birthday.”
“No, no, not after the last time I made flarn.” It was supposed to be a surprise for Valentine’s, an improvement on his last attempt on one of their first dates. There had been a small fire. “I’ll stick with an Earth dessert, thank you. And it’ll be great!” John’s face fell at his wife’s concerned expression. “It’ll be edible. You know, I could use a sous chef.”
Delenn responded by adjusting the string of John’s apron around his neck; her fingers teasing through the strands of his hair. “I have a meeting with the Brakiri Ambassador. But maybe another time. When you are not so…concerned with where you put the ingredients.”
His wife left with another firm kiss to his mouth and the implied promise that they would one day christen this kitchen properly and he would get to lick buttercream icing off places John had spent years fantasising about before they’d actually got together. But any rise in arousal quickly dissipated at the prospect of the pretty princess castle cake he had promised (idiot, John, you never promise voters, ambassadors or children) his youngest daughter. But there was a video. But the video was talking about cardboard and scissors and that damn patchwork cutter again.
“Daddy?”
John’s spine snapped straight from where he had been slumped over the worktop. “Hey Neth’ai. You okay?”
Jadenn’s eyes widened. “I was going to ask you that. What is all this?”
“I’m baking your birthday cake, sweetheart.” A cake that in five years’ time, you probably won’t even remember. I don’t even remember my seventh birthday, let alone my cake. I remember helping my Mom bake Lizzie’s cake, though. She let me pipe the icing. “Did you know that it is a Sheridan Family Tradition to help bake your birthday cake? Once you reach a certain age, of course.” It was a gambit – one that John hoped paid off. “Do you want to?
“Yeah!” Jadenn rushed to get another apron from the kitchen cupboard and John helped her tie it round her waist. John then lifted her up onto a nearby stool and together they looked at the recipe; his daughter’s small bone crest biting into his jaw as she leant happily against him. “This looks complicated, Daddy.”
“I know, right?” John rubbed the nape of his neck; glad he wasn’t the only one daunted by the prospect of this seventeen-minute baking video. “Maybe we throw out the recipe? Maybe we make our own pretty princess castle cake. What do you say?”
“Let’s do it!”
They shared a high-five before they got down to baking. John did find an easy recipe for a birthday cake that they could then decorate. Together they measured the eggs and flour and butter and sugar; both Sheridans laughing as the flour fell like a carpet of snow over the countertop – and David’s new cloak. After John found himself with a flour beard courtesy of his daughter, the two of them placed three cakes in the oven and set a timer. They then went about making buttercream icing. John wasn’t entirely sure on ratios but the sweeter the better, right? He let Jadenn put in the pink food colouring. They then sat, Jadenn’s back pressed against his front, eating buttercream icing as they waited for the timer to go off.
“This was fun.”
“Yeah, it was,” John agreed, swiping some more buttercream with his finger. They’d have to make another batch but he was okay with that. More time with his youngest. “Maybe we can use fresh strawberries as the turrets of the cake?”
“And marshmallows for the windows.”
“Excellent idea.” The timer went off. John left his daughter sitting at the countertop eating buttercream icing. He opened the heating unit. “Jadenn, sweetheart, we seem to have made cake soup.”
All he heard was laughter. Cake soup it was.

For Poetry Month, We Salute 18 Renowned Cincinnati Poets From Days Gone By
Each April, the Academy of American Poets sponsors National Poetry Month. In recognition of Cincinnati’s extensive contributions to that genre, here is a collection of local poets who achieved distinction. If living poets were included, this list could easily triple in length.
A Careless Poet Soon Forgotten Among the earliest poets writing in Cincinnati was Charles A. Jones (1815-1851). He built a career publishing verse narratives about the Indians and outlaws of the western country. Between the years 1836 and 1839 he wrote frequently for the Cincinnati Mirror, and in 1840 contributed several poems to the Cincinnati Message, but paltry payments for these efforts led him to take up the law as his main career. A critic, William Turner Coggeshall, writing in 1860, admired Jones’ imagination and energy, but deplored his slapdash compositional habits and his aversion to revision: “The hasty production of an hour was sent to the press with all its sins upon its head.”

His Poem No Longer Memorized, Even The Plaque Is Gone Generations of American schoolchildren were compelled to read and memorize a Civil War poem by Thomas Buchanan Read (1822-1872) titled “Sheridan’s Ride.” The poem celebrated General Philip Sheridan’s rallying his soldiers to victory at the 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia. It was so popular that newspapers often parodied it to skewer other topics. For many years, a plaque was mounted on the wall opposite the Public Library on Eighth Street commemorating the address at which Read wrote the famous poem. Read was popular and prolific; his poetry was collected in 1867 in a set of three volumes. In addition to poetry, Read was an accomplished painter. Several of his works, notably “The Harp of Erin” are displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Lawyer By Trade, Hero By Aspiration Although William Haines Lytle (1826-1863) studied law, he preferred the life of a soldier and composed poetry to celebrate his own heroic exploits. Lytle came from an honored line of military heroes. He fought in the Mexican War as a captain and achieved the rank of brigadier general during the Civil War. His verses were popular on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. When a sniper’s bullet found him at Chickamauga in 1863, the rebel soldiers recognized Lytle and posted a guard around his body until it could be sent back to Cincinnati. As they stood watch, the Confederates quietly recited Lytle’s poems. Lytle Park in Cincinnati was his family’s estate.

An Inveterate Revisionist Coates Kinney (1826-1904) was not a Cincinnati native, but he relocated to the Queen City at an early age. Kinney served in the Union Army during the Civil War and in the Ohio General Assembly afterwards while also practicing law and working as a journalist. He was just 23 when he wrote his most famous poem, “Rain on the Roof,” which was reprinted, collected, set to music, pirated, misattributed and celebrated throughout his life. Much of the confusion derived from Kinney’s incessant tinkering with the poem. Over his lifetime, he declared at least three different versions to be definitive.

The Piatts Helped Save Harrison’s Tomb Sarah Morgan Bryan Piatt (1836-1919) and John James Piatt (1835-1917) were Cincinnati’s answer to England’s Brownings (Robert and Elizabeth Barrett). A married couple, each earned a reputation as a poet. James Piatt was a scion of the wealthy Piatt family, though he never had much money himself. Sarah, known as Sallie, was related to orator and politician William Jennings Bryan. The couple, who lived just outside North Bend when they weren’t posted to one of John’s political appointments in Washington or Ireland, worked to preserve the tomb of William Henry Harrison. In life, John’s reputation eclipsed his wife’s. In recent years, new critical appraisals agree that Sarah was, by far, the better and more innovative poet.
Newspapers Led Everard Appleton To Poetry Everard Jack Appleton (1872-1931) started out as a newspaperman, with stints at Cincinnati’s Tribune, Commercial Gazette and Times-Star, earning a slot as a columnist known for humorous items in verse and prose. He also contributed stories and poems to national publications. He left behind a half-dozen volumes of poetry of which the best-known is probably “The Quiet Courage.” Appleton lived on Forest Avenue in Avondale.
A National Reputation Based On Odes To Domesticity Bertye Young Williams (1877-1951) published as B.Y. Williams over a productive career that resulted in a half-dozen books of poetry and appearances in the New York Times, Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Saturday Evening Post and other nationally distributed magazines. She founded a poetry magazine and publishing house, Talaria, with fellow poet Annette Patton Cornell. She was president of the Ohio Chapter of the League of American Pen Women and of the Cincinnati Women’s Press Club. A book she co-authored with Annette Patton Cornell, “Garland for a City,” was illustrated by Caroline Williams (no relation).
Cincinnati’s Unsung (But Prolific!) Poet, Horace Williamson Horace G. Williamson (1880-1943) was perhaps the most prolific poet in Cincinnati history. You won’t find him in English class these days, nor in any anthologies. Williamson wrote for money, not for art. In the early 1900s, Williamson built a profitable sideline writing poems for greeting card companies, sometimes ghost-writing love letters on spec. He had a lot of side hustles. While employed as social secretary of the YMCA, Williamson ran a talent agency and also performed in character as the Roman dictator Cincinnatus in quite a few civic celebrations.
Confined To Bed, Raymond Dandridge’s Spirit Soared Although he once achieved fame, Raymond Garfield Dandridge (1883-1930) is sadly forgotten today. His poetry fits comfortably between his predecessor Paul Laurence Dunbar (to whom Dandridge was often compared) and his successor, Langston Hughes, beacon of the Harlem Renaissance. Dandridge was almost totally paralyzed by polio when he was a young man. He spent his entire writing career confined to bed, supporting himself and his mother by taking orders for coal shipments. Eventually, Dandridge’s poetry was collected by his friends into three slim volumes, offered for sale to augment his income as a coal merchant.
George Elliston’s Poetic Legacy Lives On Eccentricity manifested itself in the person of George Elliston (1883-1946). She was a longtime Cincinnati newspaperwoman who lived like a derelict but cultivated a bohemian entourage. At her death, Elliston left behind a few slim volumes and an estate worth a quarter-million dollars, grubbed together over the years by living in cold-water apartments, wearing castoff clothing and mooching meals. She bequeathed all of this to the University of Cincinnati to establish a modern poetry collection. Some of the great poets of the English language, such as Denise Levertov and Robert Frost, have served as Elliston poets-in-residence.
Eloise Robinson Was A Rare Woman War Poet Few Cincinnatians knew that Mrs. Corda Muchmore, wife of a College Hill realtor, was, in fact, Eloise Robinson (1888-1958), one of the finest war poets of America. In 1918, she journeyed to France with the YMCA to hand out refreshments and recite poetry to support the American troops. Her poems inspired by her days at the front, such as “He Had Such Glory In His Closing Eyes” and “War” were published nationally and much admired. She taught verse writing to generations of Cincinnatians through UC’s Evening College.
Postmaster And Poet Samuel Schierloh (1889-1968) followed a colorful road to poetry. Born in Reading, Ohio, he served five years in the Navy during the days when it was known as Teddy Roosevelt’s “Great White Fleet.” After a few years as an apprentice tailor in downtown Cincinnati, he joined the Post Office and eventually became postmaster in Mount Washington. In addition to penning poetry, he was a league bowler, golfer and an amateur painter. His poems mostly debuted in Cincinnati newspapers, but were collected in several volumes including “Down the Bright Seas” in 1958.
Cornell Declined Appointment As Ohio’s Poet Laureate In 1974, Annette Patton Cornell (1897-1986) was named the best Cincinnati writer of the past 50 years by the National Society of American Pen Women. Over a long career, she published five collections of her own poetry and promoted the work of others through a literary magazine, Talaria, she founded with fellow Cincinnati poet B.Y. Williams. Cornell had her own radio show devoted to poetry and other literary topics. An Ohio governor tried to recruit her as the state’s poet laureate, but she declined the invitation as a resident of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. Her son, Si Cornell, had a long career at the Cincinnati Post.
Lawrence Welk Boosted The Career of Cincinnati’s Greeting Card Poet All of Helen Steiner Rice’s (1900-1981) best-selling books were published by Cincinnati’s Gibson Greeting Card Company. Rice was born in Lorain, Ohio and married a Dayton banker who committed suicide during the Great Depression. After working in publicity and inspirational speaking, she joined Gibson as an editor and worked there for more than 40 years. Her book sales skyrocketed in the 1960s when several of her poems were read on the Lawrence Welk television show.
X-ray Damage Launched A Poet’s Career While still a teenager, Anna M. Tansey (1906-1989) almost died when a doctor exposed her to a nearly fatal dose of X-rays. She lost one lung and part of another. Long an invalid, confined to bed, she devoured piles of books brought by her family from the library. When new antibiotics allowed her to leave her house, she embarked on a career as a poet and an advocate for ecumenical relations among religions. Her poems were often on spiritual themes, as the title of her best-selling poetry collection, “Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit” illustrates. As arthritis claimed her ability to type, she composed on a dictating machine and had her poems typed out by an assistant.
A Poet Of Great Influence Kenneth Koch (1925-2002) was born in Cincinnati to a fairly well-to-do family. His father sold office furniture and the family had a live-in maid. The family was frequently mentioned in Cincinnati newspaper society columns. After military service during World War II, Koch earned his doctorate and began a long career at Columbia University. Although he published dozens of books and was frequently anthologized, Koch is often remembered more today as a teacher than as a poet. His book on teaching children to write poetry, “Wishes, Lies and Dreams” (1970) was enormously influential.
One Small Poem For A Man . . . The oeuvre of Neil Armstrong (1930-2012), poet, is slight, consisting as it does of only two published stanzas, and that bit of doggerel clouded by controversy. In 1978, the Mini Page, a nationally syndicated children’s section carried in many newspapers, including the Cincinnati Post, asked Armstrong to provide a quote or first-person account of his moon landing. Rather than jotting a few lines of prose, Armstrong, then a professor at the University of Cincinnati, penned eight lines of poetry, clearly aimed at a juvenile audience. Unfortunately, through an editing error, the Mini Page deleted two words from Armstrong’s final line. Armstrong was not happy.
