Behind the Scenes of The Giggle - Part Three
From Entertainment Weekly (Dec 2023 by Clark Collis):
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies tells EW that the American actor was completely unfamiliar with the beloved science fiction series when the executive producer approached Harris about playing a villain called The Toymaker on this Saturday's final 60th anniversary special episode, "The Giggle." "He’d never heard of it in his life, bless him," Davies says with a laugh. "I was lucky enough to work with the great man on a show called It’s a Sin, about the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, and working with him was such a joy. The Toymaker, he's kind of the god of games, so he shuffles cards, he does magic tricks, and all of that fits Neil Patrick Harris. If you go through agents, they often tell you to go away. I was able to send just a text saying, 'Do you fancy reading this?' He read it and literally phoned me up going, 'Let me get this right, so the Doctor’s an alien, right?' I was like, 'Oh my god, you really have never heard of Doctor Who!' But he couldn’t resist it, and he came to Cardiff, and we had the most spectacular time." Davies explains that, "it's very hard to find the villain who can match David Tennant and Catherine Tate. To have a character who can be in danger of defeating those two is very hard to find. Sometimes on Doctor Who, you need armies of a thousand robots who could do that. This is just one person, so casting them was absolutely crucial and this becomes a pivotal event in the Doctor’s life. We needed that man, and, god, we had a glorious time. It’s so lovely working with Neil. When I text him now, [we ask], what’s our third project together? We’ve got to keep going!"

Michael Sheen's The Way echoes Tata steelworks reality
When Michael Sheen was filming clashes between steelworkers and riot police in his home town Port Talbot, little did he know 2,000 jobs at its steelworks would be at risk by the time it premiered.
"We had no idea when we were developing the story what would be happening at the steelworks when this came out," he said.
"It's incredibly unfortunate that the story we've written has come bizarrely very close to the truth."
Speaking ahead of The Way's premiere at Port Talbot's Reel Cinema, he insisted the three-part BBC drama - originally conceived in 2016 - was a fictional story and not about the Tata steelworks.
"But obviously, knowing the town, knowing the relationship the town has with the steelworks, knowing the insecurities and the anxieties that have always been there in my lifetime around employment and work there - that was part of what drew us to setting the story in this town," said Sheen, 55, who both directed and starred in the drama.
He said Port Talbot's steelworks was the "spiritual centre of the town" and "part of our DNA" and the news of job losses had been "devastating".
The Way is written by James Graham, created by Sheen, Graham and documentary filmmaker Adam Curtis and stars a number of Welsh actors.
The cast includes Steffan Rhodri (Steeltown Murders and Gavin & Stacey), Mali Harries (Hinterland), Sophie Melville (The Pact), Callum Scott Howells (It's a Sin) and Mark Lewis Jones (Men Up and Keeping Faith).
Episode one sees growing concern over the future of the steelworks, leading to protests, which later turn to riots.
Some take to the streets to join the fight, others frantically try to escape or hide in their homes as helicopters fly overhead.
The streets become a warzone and the town is locked down by armed police.
With Port Talbot facing an uncertain future, could life imitate art?
"It's not like we're saying 'this is what you should do as a result of what's going on' by any means, but obviously I have huge sympathy for the steelworkers," said Sheen.
"In no way is this a blueprint to how people should react, but you don't know do you? I have no idea how people are going to react.
"People will try and be as resourceful and as positive about it as they possibly can I'd imagine because that is the spirit of the people in this place - but at the same time you don't know and people are very angry as well."
For Sheen, "everything" is political.
A long-term champion of the NHS, in 2015 he was applauded for delivering a passionate speech to a pro-NHS march in Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent, and he is currently in rehearsal for a National Theatre production about NHS founder Aneurin Bevan.
In 2019, he sold property to bankroll the Homeless World Cup in Cardiff when funding for the £2m project fell through at the last moment.
In 2020, the actor, who was born in Newport and raised in Port Talbot, said he had handed back his OBE so he could air his views about the monarchy without being a "hypocrite".
In 2021, he said he had turned himself into a "not-for-profit" actor, using the money he earned from acting to fund projects.
He has been vocal on a range of issues from children in care to Welsh independence.
Was he trying to make a political statement in The Way?
"Everything is connected, everything happens for a reason, things are the way they are in this town and any town not just by chance, it's because of choices and various things... I think inevitably this was going to be a political story," he said.
"Part of the reason why we wanted to set it here... we needed to feel there was a great sense of discontent amongst a lot of people in the place, a lot of anxiety, a lot of feeling of not having their voices heard."
He said when people were made to feel that they were not being listened to and did not matter "that sense of frustration and anger can boil over".
Sheen made his name as an actor initially in the theatre before winning acclaim as a screen actor playing real people from Tony Blair, David Frost, Kenneth Williams and Chris Tarrant to lead roles in series including Good Omens, Masters of Sex and Staged.
In 2011, he directed and starred in a 72-hour epic theatrical production of The Passion, which moved around different locations across Port Talbot drawing huge crowds and critical acclaim.
It is perhaps unsurprising that he would choose to make his TV directorial debut in the town too.
"[The Way] was definitely very personal," he said.
"I feel like I knew what I was filming and I felt anchored and connected to what was going on."
Sheen now lives near Port Talbot with his partner Anna Lundberg and their two children Lyra and Mabli.
"It's somewhere I inevitably keep coming back to and it's an endless source of inspiration," he said of the town.
"It's the source of all my imaginative explorations really because it's my home.
"It's where I grew up, it's where all the most important things happened to me, it's where my family still lives, it's where I now live again and as I've got older I've realised more and more how important the beginning of my life was and all the opportunities people gave to me."
One of those people who gave him opportunities was Godfrey Evans, a drama teacher who helped shaped generations of actors through the West Glamorgan Youth Theatre and died in November, aged 82.
At the premiere across the road from the town's Aberavon Beach, Sheen dedicated the screening to both his former teacher and Port Talbot's steelworkers.
What are his hopes for those in his home town currently fearing for their jobs?
"Particularly at a time like this when there's so much anxiety and so much concern about the future it is so important to feel like you're supported and you can talk about what's going on and to find connection with other people who are maybe going through the same things," he said.
"We wish everyone the best and hope there's plenty of support for people in the future."

here is a list of what was in this show, and in what ways they updated/changed the pieces of music they played, and what they never played before. with a dash of commentery:
i am the doctor is the first track, neat, they did the Proms version, which combines the Pandorica speach theme right at the end
all the strange strange creatures, which yeah another Proms staple, it had a few touches of fresh violins in the end we did not hear before
they did a suite for the entire classic who themes they did play that night, apperently the two people behaind the rediophonic workshop were there to play it as well! that's neat, the 60s cyberman theme, (i love it dearly, got obsessed with it pretey recently lol), they also did some stuff that i would not know to recognize if there is anything new about them: the sea devils theme, the city of death, and the 5 doctors! the same classic who themes they played i the proms 2013, either way they sound very nice, the orchestra really nicely blends in with the syntonizer and it feels like a loving hug.
oooh and they have a mini interview with mark and peter from the radiophonic workshop!
Abigail's Song (Silence Is All You Know) is very neat as well, no changes but its very nice. and they dedicated the piece to Michael Gambon, that's sweet
omg Steven Moffet hello, i did not remember seeing him on the cast list. they are using the season 4 intro as like an in between piece to welcome guests on stage by the way, his interview in nice but short, mostly talking in short about his time as a show runner and the diffrence between Matt and Peter.
sylvester mcCoy is here in the audiance apperently!
This is Galiffray is next, pretty standard but again beutifully played
the long song is next, no child singer, the same singer as Abagail's song as well, but gosh!! they included in it the part of the theme of this song that played when 11 regenerated?? and the new singing then payerd over it. it is the same theme part that played when the actual speech of the long song played, in front of the living planet, but without the speech itself it really takes you back to his regeneration in my option, they then layerd the singing part over it in a very nice harmony that made me tear up 😭 . once again just like they did in the proms 2013, but this version feels very updated
the companions suite, they went Rose - Amy, which sad no clara, bill or any other companion, but its nice to hear those themes again, also Martha's theme got a little bit more Wind Instruments and violins then usual! which extended it a little and that was very nice. it also felt like Donna's theme was a little bit quieter then usual, they also combined Amy's theme little starting notes to fuze organicly into the theme itself, the xylophone very imbeded into the theme instead of it standing out like in earlier performances. and gave it a little bit of extra notes right at the end.
Emily Cook interview! she apperently played in the orcestra in the show as well with the saxophone. and talking about the doctor who lockdown project! (i cannot believe i never knew about this thing's existance??? holy shit,)
Doomsday, had a fancy and really funky gaiter solo, much similer to when it was preformed at the proms in 2008, but this time its very distinctive, not playing along singing at all, just pure gaiter goodness, really enjoyable
Vale Decem was really funky! nothing new but as bombastic as ever, screaming its way to your ears
Am i a good man!! very nice to see a Peter theme finally making its way to the fold, though a lot of them were preformed at Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular 2015, it was a much smaller scale as to the proms and this show is definitly bigger, god i used to be so obsessed with this themeee its not even funny, the version is very similer to there and you can reallly feel the drums punping at the start and its really energetic
omg twice upon a time?? damm, actual music released from something past season 9??? insane about this actually, oh i have never heard this before, its so gentle and remenicit of am i a good man in such a beautiful way, giving them theme a call back with emotinal and more action based end, it also adds the known and notable singer and some stuff from rtd era doctor theme?? and some funky violins from i am the doctor?? all leading to a fine finish?? i am in shock and aw. its like a finishing theme from Marry Gold to his era of the show. damm (if you are worried about The Shepherd's Boy, that will come later!)
a chris chibnall and Segun Akinola interview! Chris talking about the scrutiny he got for his era, and excitment about the whole thing, and Segun Akinola talking about the stress of the job and the freedom he got. THEY ARE ALL SO EXCITED FOR THE FACT THAT HIS THEMES FOR DOCTOR WHO ARE FOR THE FIRST TIME BEING PREFORMED AND I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT IT AS WELL HOLY SHIT
FINALLY the woman who fell to earth suite! confirmed to have: the woman who fell to earth, spyfall, power of the doctor, and a few suprises?? 👀 god i am once again becoming emotinal, i love 13's theme so much. the spyfall theme is so recognizable for its bond influence and so fun!! 13 era loves will know a lot more then me on the rest of it but god its so fun. DEMONS OF THE PUNJAB!! TRADITINAL INDIAN MUSIC WITH A FANTASTIC SINGER, god i wish we could watch this visualy. 13s regeneration theme is so GOOD IM CRYING, what can i even say, they didn't have the libraty of changes as this was the first and might be the only preformance of these themes, as little changes as possible for what i've noticed, but still, what a rollercoster of emotions
The Life of Sunday (Ruby's Theme) ...oh? piano? a lone and qiuet piano? a quiet and sad sounding theme? oh it expands! omg the slowely building violins?? the violins are truly the stars of this evening, and then the hopeful theme ends and now the violins are not celebrating the piano, they are moving towards a sad but nice main part. oh we are jumping forwad a little! oh wow, this is truly like a valce. the piano is the star but to what end? its slightly hopeful but very mournful existance
a lot of the versions had a little bit of a rytham change in most of the peices, little bits where you would think "oh is it out of rythem?" but no, its just a slight change in tempo, i guess to make the versions played here to stand out a little.
Marry Gold interview! hello! omg its so weird to hear his voice again. talking about his new era and coming back to who.
Fifteen, WHAT THE HELL THIS IS STARTING LIKE A SUPERHERO THEME?? oooh we are leading to an action based middle, the bassons are controling the theme! the trumpets!! its bloody danceable!! i am stimming all over the room! its fucking danceable!! it feels very action based very much like i am the doctor, a lot of rising violins, usually singeling hope, this feels like... such a fresh and new doctor. but it doesn;t sound... excited, it feels like a man on the run, it has a very clear dessperation going in, and i am neglecting to find any quiet moment if and they exist at all. the rising of the hope comes very sparadicly, much like Ruby's . it feels like they are contredicting each other simply by nature, but both of them are constantly searching for hope and i guess happines? accept he feels like he is searching for... quiet, peace, DAMM i gotta relisten to this to get more understanding of it
russel t interview! ok talking about his his history with who and coming back, mostly about appreciating the music in the show overoll
The Shepherd's Boy!!! FIRST TIME PREFORMING. god i am emotional once again, you can clearly hear the diffrent instruments individually at the start, the violins are lovely the chelos and everything else is really beautifully building up itself, the drums. the choir! all rising! they added the chior to the part right before the end!! added chior overoll andmakin it much more stand out as opposed to the soundtrack version. the drums were eceptinal!! in all of peter's era music. god its great
Doctor Who Theme (2023 version), lets go! the pianos! the quiet violins!! people have pointed out its similer to the movie middle eight and that's very true, the piano is truly the star of this theme and it shows!(edited) i am buzzing this was as great and better then i expected

'Call it How Neil Patrick Harris Met Your Favorite British Time Travel Show.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies tells EW that the American actor was completely unfamiliar with the beloved science fiction series when the executive producer approached Harris about playing a villain called The Toymaker on this Saturday's final 60th anniversary special episode, "The Giggle."
"He’d never heard of it in his life, bless him," Davies says with a laugh. I was able to send just a text saying, 'Do you fancy reading this?' He read it and literally phoned me up going, 'Let me get this right, so the Doctor’s an alien, right?' I was like, 'Oh my god, you really have never heard of Doctor Who!' But he couldn’t resist it, and he came to Cardiff, and we had the most spectacular time."
The Toymaker first appeared on the show back in the '60s, when the character was portrayed by Michael Gough and the Doctor was played by William Hartnell. This time around, Harris' villain will face off against David Tennant and Catherine Tate, who are reprising their respective roles of the Doctor and Donna Noble for the three anniversary episodes after many years away from the show. Davies explains that, "it's very hard to find the villain who can match David Tennant and Catherine Tate.
Tennant agrees that Davies made the right choice in casting Harris as the episode's villain.
"Oh, he’s good," the actor says. "I don’t quite know if he knew what to expect, but he dived in with such gusto and brio. This part requires a lot of skill sets and Neil turns up with them all. I don’t want to give away too much about what might be required of the Toymaker, but you need a sort of an all-round entertainer to play that part and a very good actor, so there aren’t a lot of people who could have ticked all the boxes required. We were really excited when Neil said 'yes,' and actually it’s impossible to imagine who else it might have been. He’s a sort of theater animal, so he’s got that bit of graft about him that my Scottish Presbyterian soul rather enjoys being around. And he’s got a twinkle in his eye, which is sort of the combination of elements that you need for Doctor Who, I think."'

I really enjoy writing these two, because there's nothing more fun for me than writing two characters who are in love but are either a) oblivious b) annoyed about it or c) both
From this:
Ellie found Hardy wandering along a pathway near the Severn, a few weeks after her promotion ceremony that he hadn't attended. It was past midnight, but the moon was full and casting day-like shadows on the ground.
"Is this an actual dream, or a dream-dream?" she asked as she drew level.
"A what-what?" he replied, startled either by her appearance or her question. "Have you been dreaming about me?"
"No. Shut up." Her dreams lately had been strange and bewildering and unpleasant. Sometimes she was wading through bogs or crawling through tall grass, a nameless creature (though sometimes he did have a name, the name she still shared) hunting her. Sometimes she was the hunter, scouring Broadchurch for the evil slithering along its pavements. The dreams always ended the same, with a fight that tore into her even as she tore into her enemy, both of them bleeding out as they sought to destroy each other.
When Hardy had featured he'd not always been her saviour, but he always fought with her, shoulder to shoulder. Sometimes he'd be killed, blood she'd never seen in the real world oozing from his broken body as he stared up at her, unseeing. She preferred the dreams where she died first; where Hardy would grab hold of her and clasp her hand, touch her cheek, tell her that she'd done well as she went cold. That was one way she could know it was a dream — the real Hardy had never touched her.
But the shadows of her home were far away now; instead they were stood on the shores of the river Severn. The wetlands behind her were almost as wide as the river itself, insects buzzing industriously and the wildflowers moving gently in the breeze: willows, rush, sedges, fairy flax, balsam, the names her gran had taught her decades ago. The far bank twinkled like so many glow-worms, the passing cars too far to be heard above the sound of the water.
"I can see Cardiff from here," she observed, squinting.
"You absolutely cannot," Hardy said. He was back in what she thought of as his uniform: a suit that needed a dry clean, along with a rumpled white shirt and ugly blue tie and shoes that hadn't been polished in years. She wondered if he was really wearing that right now, or if her dreams just dressed him up like they did her. She had on her anorak as usual — though underneath were the same jimjams she'd brought to Sandbrook.
"Is this your doing?" she asked, sticking her leg out to illustrate. "Why've I got this on?"
Hardy shrugged. "It's your dream."

Welcome to New York | (Dieter Bravo x OFC)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Dieter Bravo x OFC Warnings: alcohol, smoking & zero angst, promise! Summary: Bryony attends a housewarming party in New York City, where surrounded by the laughter and energy of the party, she encounters Dieter Bravo for the first time. Sparks fly hinting at an unexpected connection that could forever change their lives. AO3: Linked
A/N: in passing with @gnpwdrnwhiskey last week I mentioned that I didn't think I knew how to write without adding angst, so this was my challenge to myself to try and do so! Also to give Bryony and Dieter a little reprieve from the drama! Still not 100% on this piece, throwing it at the wall and seeing if it sticks, so feedback, as always, is welcomed! Also, if it's not apparent, the poster in the graphic is not a visual of Bryony.
Welcome to New York.
2017
The night air was warm, winter was turning to spring and the city of New York was buzzing. It was Bryony's first time in the city, she had travelled to other cities in the US before. But hadn't really understood the call of New York. The idea of a city that never slept made her feel exhausted and wasn't that just London? A city she was already too familiar with. However, that was all until she had touched down earlier that day and taken a cab from JFK to her hotel across from Central Park.
The cab ride from the airport had been an experience in itself. As she zipped through the bustling streets, past towering skyscrapers and neon-lit billboards, she couldn't help but be swept up in the city's vibrancy. Each sight was a stark contrast to the tranquillity of her native South Wales and the sophisticated charms of London.
Gina and Lloyd's brownstone, nestled in the heart of Brooklyn, was Bryony's destination. Arriving just as the sun began to dip below the city skyline, casting long shadows and bathing everything in a soft, golden light, she felt a twinge of anticipation coursing through her veins.
Bryony, having watched enough Sex and The City, knew all too well that these brownstones didn't come cheap. Despite being thirty-two and having almost a decade's worth of experience in the TV and film production industry, the magnitude of the property's value was somewhat intimidating. She couldn't shake off the feeling of being somewhat out of her depth.
Bryony had grown up in Cardiff, in a close-knit community where her grandmother and both her aunts lived just down the street. When her career meant a move to London, she found a roommate in her brother. Rhys, retired from professional rugby, had a few international tours with Wales and had a good run with a professional club. Both of which had ended with a crushed disc and falling back on his law degree that he swore he'd never need. That arrangement had ended when they could no longer stand the sight of each other, and Bryony subsequently moved to a modest flat in Islington.
She paused at the doorstep at the top of the stairs, adjusting her dress, a nervous habit, she tried to quell the butterflies fluttering in her stomach. She inhaled deeply, the scent of the city, a blend of fresh flowers, car exhausts, and tantalizing wafts from a nearby pizzeria, filling her lungs.
Arriving in New York also marked a pivotal chapter in Bryony's career. She was currently basking in the glow of being the lead producer of the BBC overnight sensation, 'Dark Waters'. The engrossing drama had captivated the nation for six tension-filled weeks, catapulting Bryony's name when her relentless efforts to launch the show were finally acknowledged. The waves of her success were still riding high, the demand for her talent leverage that had carried her across the Atlantic.
Taking one last moment to gather herself, she reached out and pressed the doorbell.
As the heavy oak door swung open, Bryony was embraced by not only the welcoming chorus of laughter and lively conversation that escaped the townhouse, but the arms of Gina, who upon seeing Bryony nearly took her off of her feet despite her petite stature. The diminutive blonde held her at arm's length, her chic bob bouncing with the infectious energy that matched her smile.
Gina had a good ten years of experience in the industry when she'd first taken Bryony under her wing in her first years. Gina had been a guiding light then, her role as a producer instrumental in shaping Bryony's growing career. Over the years they continued to work on various projects together, and as they did, their friendship grew.
"You made it!" Gina exclaimed in excitement.
Bryony smiled "Wouldn't have missed it!" she replied. "Congratulations on the new home! It’s beautiful!"
Bryony followed Gina into the awe-inspiring brownstone, where New York charm met Gina's exquisite taste in decor. The walls were already adorned with photographs and personal mementoes, reflecting their new home's warm character.
Basking in the glow of the lively gathering, Gina turned to Bryony, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Thank you, love. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to have you here." She squeezed Bryony's arm in excitement, "And brace yourself - I've invited someone who I'm convinced will be your one true love!"
Bryony's brow arched in a mix of curiosity and playful exasperation. "Wow, dinner and my future husband? You do know how to throw a party Gin!" She was all too familiar with Gina's relentless penchant for playing cupid, this wasn't the first time.
"Lay off the matchmaking, Gina," came a voice from behind them, rich with amusement. They both turned to find Lloyd, his face split into a wide grin, cradling a glass tumbler in his hand. "I'm pretty sure Bryony has had her fill of your romantic schemings for a lifetime by now." He extended the tumbler in his hand to Bryony, his smile infectious. "A warm welcome to our abode, Bryony. Gin and tonic, if my memory serves me right?"
"Right as always, Lloyd," Bryony responded as she accepted the glass.
Lloyd exuded an aura of sophistication that was almost tangible. He was the kind of man who could spout lines of profound prose at the drop of a hat, and then be found at the heart of good gossip. His charm was effortless, much like the characters he brought to life on stage, making him a beloved figure within the New York theatre circles.
Gina crossed her arms, feigning a pout. "I'll have you both know that I'm an exceptional matchmaker."
Bryony laughed, the sound echoing lightly in the lively atmosphere. She took a refreshing sip of her drink, the cool tang of the gin and tonic a welcome contrast to the warm room. "The jury is still out on that one Gina."
Gina shot Bryony a grin, her eyes twinkling. "Well, don't be surprised if someone manages to catch your attention tonight."
With a playful roll of her eyes, Bryony retorted, "We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?"
---
As the night went on, Bryony navigated the party, pushing herself out of her comfort zone to network and engage in conversations with various attendees. Excusing herself from another discussion about the nuances of British television, she headed off in search of another drink.
Surprisingly the kitchen was empty, the sleek expanse of the island held an array of dishes wrapped in anticipation of dinner. Bryony’s stomach grumbled reminding her that she’d eaten no more than the limp sandwich that had been served prior to her plane's arrival to JFK. Eyeing a box of crackers, she opened the box, popping one into her mouth as she turned her attention to making herself a drink. As the ice cubes clinked in the glass, Bryony savoured a brief pause from the energetic ambience of the party.
Lost in her thoughts, she was startled when a voice broke the silence. "Looks like we both found the one quiet spot in this place," the voice said.
Bryony jumped, startled by the sudden sound of another person in the kitchen. The box of crackers nearly slipped out of her hands as she spun around, her gaze meeting that of a face she certainly didn't recognize. He was tall, with dark brown eyes that twinkled with amusement at her surprise, and an easy smile that complimented his features. He stood casually against the kitchen island as if he belonged there.
Bryony felt her cheeks flush as she stammered out a response. “Jesus, you scared the shit out of me.”
He responded with a deep, hearty chuckle, "Apologies. Wasn't my intention to startle you. I'm in search of a refill myself."
Bryony eyed his half-drained glass of bourbon and raised an eyebrow. Unfazed, he winked at her and polished off the remaining liquor. "As I said, in dire need of a refill. Call me Dieter. Dieter Bravo."
Bryony suppressed a smirk, finding it hard to believe that his name could be real.
"Bryony," she countered back, mimicking his theatrical name presentation, "Bryony Morgan."
"Your accent gives you away, Bryony," Dieter said in a low voice as he leaned around her to access the cabinet to her left. His shoulder grazed hers, sending sparks through her. He was close enough that his hips brushed against hers as he reached for the stash of premium spirits. "Seems like you're a long way from home, no?" A hint of a flirtatious smile tugged at the corner of his lips, pulling something within Bryony along with it.
"I suppose I am," Bryony said and gave him the cliff notes of her background. Tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear as she watched him select a bottle. "New York though is quite a bit different from London."
He chuckled, popping the cork off a bottle of vintage bourbon before taking a sniff. "That it is, Bryony. I've spent some time in London myself. Fine city, but it doesn't quite have the... chaos of New York, you know?"
Her soft laughter filled the warm, bustling atmosphere of the housewarming party. "I'll give you that. The chaos is definitely unique here."
Their eyes met as he poured the liquor, the amber liquid catching the light as it filled his glass. He held her gaze, a slow smile spreading across his face. There was something enticing about him, every bit of him demanded her attention.
"So, Bryony Morgan," he started, setting down the bottle and turning to face her. He leaned back against the counter, crossing his arms over his chest. "What brings you to Gina and Lloyd's party tonight?"
"Friends with Gina, we've worked on a few projects back in the UK over the years," Bryony replied, tracing the rim of her glass with a fingertip. “And of course, by proxy, that's how I know Lloyd.”
"Ah, working with Gina, that must be quite the adventure," Dieter chuckled, taking a sip of his bourbon. "She is one of the best in the business."
“How about you?” Bryony reached into the box of crackers, popping another into her mouth before offering the box to Dieter, “How do you know Lloyd and Gina?”
Dieter grinned, accepting a cracker from the box. "Lloyd and I go way back. He's quite the taskmaster when it comes to his stage productions. I'm currently starring in Lloyd's latest production. It's... interesting, to say the least. He's got a knack for the dramatic."
Bryony chuckled, her gaze meeting Dieters. "That he does. I've seen a few of his works. Quite compelling. And you? Do you enjoy the drama?"
"Depends on the day," Dieter answered with a shrug, a wry smile playing on his lips. "It can be... exhilarating. And other times, it's just exhausting."
Bryony found herself drawn in by his candour, the easy way he spoke about his work. There was a vibrancy that was hard to ignore.
He looked at her then, his gaze inquisitive. "So, what about you, Bryony? What brings you to the chaotic city of New York from the refined streets of London?"
“Work,” she replied simply as she took a sip of her drink, “there's the promise of work out in LA, so I'm meeting with some studios this week for interviews and meetings. I'm also hoping I get a chance to take a look around New York, I've never been here before.”
Dieter clutched at his chest dramatically, “Never been to New York before? How is that even possible?”
"I guess I never saw the appeal," Bryony replied, the crinkle at the corner of her eyes betraying her amusement.
“Well, how are your first impressions?"
"Honestly," she began, a light chuckle escaping her as she glanced down at her watch. "I’ve been here less than twenty-four hours, and most of that time was spent in a taxi or adjusting to my hotel room." She met his gaze again, her eyes twinkling with amusement.
He smirked, taking a thoughtful sip of his bourbon. "Well, the beauty of New York can't be appreciated in the back of a taxi or from a hotel room window," he responded, setting his glass down on the counter. "There's a certain life to it, a rhythm that you have to immerse yourself in to really understand."
“Anything, in particular, you recommend I see first?” Bryony asked, emboldened by the gin she'd already consumed on top of the jetlag.
"New York?" Dieter arched an eyebrow, a smirk playing on his lips as he swirled the amber liquid in his glass. "The city has endless possibilities. A little exploration could be just what you need."
Bryony lifted her glass to her lips in the hope to hide the blush she felt creeping up her cheeks. She couldn't deny the appealing prospect of Dieter Bravo as her personal city guide. "That so?" she replied, her tone playfully challenging. "Sounds almost like an invitation."
He grinned, his eyes twinkling in a way that promised fun and adventure. "Consider it an opportunity, Bryony. An opportunity to see the city through the eyes of a man who's lived and loved here."
"Aren't you a busy man? You must have a lot going on," she retorted, trying to keep the conversation light.
A dismissive shrug accompanied his smug grin. "Oh, there's always room for one more adventure," he replied, casting her a playful wink over the top of his bourbon.
Bryony's unexpected laughter surprised them both. "Adventure, you say? Is that how you see me – a damsel in need of a thrilling rescue?"
"Not exactly," he said, the flirtatious veneer fading for a moment, replaced by something more genuine. "I think you're someone who's about to embark on an exciting new chapter, and I'd like to be part of that story, even if it's just for a brief moment."
Dieter's words echoed between them, the background chatter of the party fading into a muffled hum. There was an honest charm about Dieter, an attraction that went far beyond his clean-cut Hollywood looks. She studied him thoughtfully, his proposition appearing less a daunting task and more a promising adventure in the grandiosity of New York City.
A subtle rush of excitement coursed through her veins, her cheeks blooming with a soft blush. Generally, the thought of navigating a social situation like this with a stranger would have her mind plotting potential escape plans. Yet, with Dieter, she felt inexplicably at ease, wrapped in the warmth of his charismatic pull.
Taking a deep breath, she locked eyes with him and, with a spark of anticipation, accepted his offer, “I think I'd enjoy that.”
---
As the dinner call was announced, Bryony reluctantly extricated herself from the comfort of the kitchen, following in Dieter's wake. He was soon swallowed up by the crowd, enticed away by a familiar voice. Dieter cast her a playful wink before weaving his way through the sea of people, his name echoed around him.
Much to Bryony's frustration, Dieter sat further down the table. However, he could be heard over the thrum of conversations. Throughout the course of dinner, her attention kept gravitating towards him. The way he held court, the way he drew people in, it was undeniably captivating.
"Unparalleled, really," he expressed fervently, his hands dancing in the air to emphasise his words. "The enchanting realities we conjure up on stage are truly astounding." He passionately shared captivating anecdotes and viewpoints, mesmerizing his captivated audience with his fervent words and expressive gestures
His laughter, enchanting and infectious, would fade into a knowing smile whenever their eyes met. Yet, every time they found a chance to navigate through the crowd towards one another, the currents of the party would sweep them away. Another admiring compliment here, a spirited debate there.
As the evening wore on, it felt as though the number of guests had multiplied. Bryony found herself questioning the architectural integrity of the brownstone, surprised that it could hold such a vast variety of party-goers. Gina and Lloyd, the soiree's hosts, had long since disappeared into the vibrant mass of their guests, leaving her adrift amidst the waves of well-wishers and hangers-on.
Eventually, needing a breather from the crowd, and the repetition of hearing people try and imitate her accent, Bryony sought refuge in the cool New York night of Gina and Lloyd's garden. The slight chill was a soothing contrast to the stifling warmth of the party, and she welcomed it, wrapping her arms around herself. Eyes closed, head tilted up towards the sky, she took a deep breath. The nagging pangs of jetlag reminded her it had been almost a full day since she'd left Gatwick, yet she tried to put that aside.
Her moment of peace was broken by a gentle voice, rich with intrigue, "Finally, didn't think I'd get to see you again this evening."
The sound of footsteps echoing against the flagstone pavement announced Dieter's approach. In his hands, he balanced two filled-to-the-brim champagne glasses and a box of cigarettes. Wordlessly, he offered her one of the drinks, taking up a casual stance against the railing next to her. His dark eyes, sparkling under the dimly lit sky, darted her way, a playful smile tugging at his lips.
She returned his smile as she accepted the champagne. The crisp, cool bubbles of the drink served to heighten the pleasant chill of the evening.
As Dieter offered her the cigarette box, Bryony shook her head, "No thanks."
Unfazed, Dieter tilted the box toward himself, raising an eyebrow in silent query. Bryony gestured for him to go ahead. He then smoothly pulled out a cigarette, placing it between his lips with a lazy finesse that was impossible to ignore.
Captivated, Bryony watched as the dimly lit tip of his cigarette cast a warm glow onto his chiselled features. Dieter took a long, thoughtful drag, his posture subtly shifting to ensure the smoke veered away from her. Despite her personal aversion to the habit, she couldn't deny the allure the habit added to him.
When he finally released a slow stream of smoke into the air, he turned back to her with a mischievous grin, his eyes twinkling in the soft light. The silent intensity of his gaze ignited a familiar energy between them, a thrilling undercurrent that had been palpably present since their paths had crossed earlier in the evening.
“Managed to escape, then?” His voice was quiet, meant only for her, a stark contrast to the vibrant energy he displayed inside.
Bryony smiled, shrugging lightly. “Needed some air. It’s a bit much in there.”
A deep, resonating chuckle echoed from Dieter. His nod of agreement punctuated the understanding that passed between them as he savoured another puff. “Absolutely, it's quite the circus.” His eyes locked with hers in the sparse lighting, the soft intensity within them captivating her completely. The quietude that stretched between them was comfortable, each seeming to find solace in the other's company.
"Is it always this easy for you?" Bryony asked, playfully referring to the seamless charm he seemed to exude.
His shoulders moved in a casual shrug, his mischievous grin remaining in place, "Only with someone worth the effort." His statement, laced with flirtatious intent, hung in the air, amping up the tension between them.
Bryony blushed, "So, 'More Than I Should'," referring to Lloyds play that he'd mentioned he was starring in, "How's it coming along?" Her question attempted to keep the conversation casual, but there was no mistaking the flirtatious undertones.
Dieter exhaled a slow stream of smoke before answering, "It's intense," he confessed, his eyes following the trail of smoke. "Lloyd is a genius, and he’s pushing us to explore some profound emotional depths. The play has these intricate themes of love and loss that are quite compelling."
Bryony found herself nodding along. "I've been debating asking Lloyd for tickets. It sounds like an experience I shouldn't miss."
Dieter quirked a brow at her, "Why bother Lloyd when I can get them for you?" He challenged, his grin teasing and magnetic. "And I can do you one better. A dinner date after the show perhaps?"
"Really?" Bryony's surprise swiftly morphed into a delighted smile. "That's quite a generous offer, Mr. Bravo."
His response was a rumble of laughter, the sound warm and intimate. "Think of it as the first stop on Bravo New York experience," he quipped with a theatrical wave of his arm.
Bryony found herself laughing, charmed by his casual bravado. "A proposition like that is quite impossible to turn down. I'm in."
His eyes lit up at her acceptance, a spark of excitement dancing in them.
A yawn, wide and deep, escaped Bryony. She swiftly covered her mouth, but it was too late to hide. She laughed in embarrassment, "Sorry," she apologized, but it was barely a moment before another yawn surfaced.
Observing this, Dieter's lips curled into a smile. "Bryony my dear, I do believe your jet lag is catching up with you," he mused, "Perhaps it's time for Cinderella to consider her exit?"
Feigning a hurt expression, Bryony shot back, "Are you trying to get rid of me so soon?"
Dieter returned her playful jibe with a roguish grin. "On the contrary," he responded, his voice rich with amusement, "However, it wouldn’t do well for my reputation to have a lovely lady like you dozing off on me," he paused, his smile broadening, "Well, at least not because of my conversational skills."
Bryony’s laugh rang out, the sound brushing away her fatigue, if only for a moment. "Well, we certainly can't risk damaging your hard-earned reputation, can we?"
With a flourish, Dieter stubbed out the remnants of his cigarette and extended his arm to her. "Shall we?" He proposed, his tone layered with charm. "I owe you at least the courtesy of hailing you a cab."
Bryony bit her lip, taking appraise of the man before her. It wasn't as if she'd been lacking any attention on the romance front. Being currently single had been a choice for Bryony, she'd dedicated the last two years to her work on Dark Waters, determined to ensure its success. Her trip to New York however was initially intended for interviews and exploring the city's attractions. Dieter Bravo, on the other hand, was an unexpected surprise
Taking a deep breath, she linked her arm through his. "Alright, Dieter. Let's get a cab." She smiled gratefully at him. "You're quite the gentleman."
He returned her smile, the corner of his lips quirking up in a way that set her heart fluttering. "Only on occasion," he quipped as they started making their way out to the front of the townhouse.
Once outside, Dieter pulled out his phone and quickly typed something into it. He held it out to Bryony, the new contact page open, "Just making sure you can schedule your 'Bravo Tour' of New York," he teased, his tone a playful blend of humour and earnestness.
Accepting the phone, Bryony couldn't suppress her smile. Swiftly, she entered her number and hit 'save'. Regardless of the spontaneity of this evening, she knew one thing for certain: there was no doubt in her mind that she wanted to see him again.
Returning his phone, Bryony gave him a teasing smile, "I'll be expecting five-star service on this tour, Dieter." She could see the glint of excitement in his eyes, matching her own.
As their playful banter melted away, giving way to a comfortable, yet electrifying silence, an unspoken understanding passed between them. The air around them was charged with a palpable tension, a connection that neither of them could deny.
The late winter chill didn't bother Bryony as she stood under the muted glow of the street light, her eyes locked with Dieters. As he moved a step closer, erasing the minimal distance between them, a sense of anticipation knotted in her stomach. She was acutely aware of his presence - the intoxicating scent of his cologne, the broad expanse of his shoulders just inches from her, the defined angles of his jaw, and the alluring smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Taking her by surprise, Dieter gently cradled the back of her neck, his gentle fingertips tracing over her skin. A small gasp escaped her lips, and without thinking, her hands found their places - one on his firm chest, the other resting lightly on his hip.
He ran his tongue over his lips, a seemingly innocuous gesture that set her heart racing. The playful tilt of his head and the knowing look in his eyes made it clear he was aware of the effect he had on her.
He pulled back slightly, surprising her with a gentle gesture as he pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, creating a moment of sweet tenderness that left her stunned and craving for more.
The unexpected tenderness of Dieter's kiss to her forehead sent a rush of warmth coursing through Bryony, leaving her a little breathless. The hint of surprise must have registered on her face, because Dieter's face split into a self-deprecating grin, "I know, not my usual style." He said with a shrug.
Exhaustion was starting to make itself known, her brain fuzzy around the edges, but she couldn't help the chuckle that escaped her lips at his admission, "You don't say."
His hand still held at her neck, thumb gently stroking the bare skin of her collarbone. The night was quiet around them, leaving them standing alone under the streetlamp. New York’s nightlife was dwindling down into a softer lull, the noise distant. Their surroundings were forgotten for a moment as Bryony got lost in Dieter's deep-set eyes.
The sudden transition from a simmering tension to this tender intimacy left Bryony both surprised and yearning for more. She found herself captivated by Dieter, his proximity allowing her to notice the faint flecks of gold in his deep brown eyes. His warm breath fanning her face caused her to catch her own.
"Dieter..." she uttered his name, a whisper amidst the gentle night breeze. Her emotions were bubbling to the surface, threatening to spill over. The fatigue of the long day, mixed with the unexpected intimacy she was experiencing with Dieter, was a potent concoction that made her feel unsteady.
Responding to the bewilderment mirrored in her eyes, Dieter offered a small, soothing smile. He swept a loose lock of hair away from her face, his thumb brushing lightly against her jawline. The electrifying sensation this created stayed with her, a tantalizing suggestion of what might be.
"You're tired," he acknowledged softly. His thumb traced the contour of her jaw in a languid stroke, igniting a trail of goosebumps down her spine. Then, in a statement that contradicted his usual impulsive nature, he added, "The city can wait for you. And so can I."
His words hung in the night air, a promise that left Bryony both intrigued and more confused than before. For Dieter, who was accustomed to pursuing his desires with relentless intensity, this restraint was uncharted territory. He was aware of the profound impact his words had, a stark contrast to his typical behaviour. The unfamiliar sensation of patiently waiting, rather than chasing fervently, gave him a sense of strange satisfaction.
But as the horn of a taxi Dieter had flagged broke through the silence, Dieter reluctantly let go of Bryony. "Your chariot awaits," he said with a smirk, his hand lingering for a moment longer before he finally stepped forward to hold the taxi door open for her.
"Goodnight, Dieter Bravo,"
"Goodnight, Bryony Morgan," he replied.
As the cab pulled away, leaving a somewhat dazed Dieter on the sidewalk, Bryony couldn't help but feel that this was just the beginning of their story. Little did she know, at that moment, just how drastically this unexpected rendezvous with Dieter Bravo would impact her future, transforming her world in ways she couldn't yet fathom.
---
As Bryony settled into the back of the taxi, the Brooklyn dissolving into a whirl of twinkling lights, she felt the familiar buzz of her phone from inside her purse.
Pulling it out, she noticed a new text message from Gina lighting up the screen.
"Sorry I missed you leaving babes, I hope you had a great time??? Coffee tomorrow? I didn't even get a chance to introduce you to that guy! He's a production assistant on Lloyd's latest show, James. I think you and him would hit it off! Love you lots, g'night xxx"

PRIDE: I hear that you’re calling from the UK.
Jinkx Monsoon: Yeah, I'm in Cardiff, Wales. I haven’t begun shooting Doctor Who yet, but I’ve been having meetings and costume fittings. And my god, it’s just… it’s a dream come true. I’ve had a lot of dreams come true recently.
This is so exciting! I know you can’t spill any tea yet, but how excited are you to join the cast and the universe of Doctor Who?
I’m terribly excited. It’s not easy to encapsulate how excited I am with words. I was saying to the director yesterday, the role that I’m playing, it’s like everything I ever dreamed about doing as an actor in one character. It’s insane. It’s like all of my actor fantasies have been rolled into one character, and now I get to do it all on a show that I love, written by a prolific writer, a voice of our generation who has written so many astounding things. And this is just one example of his brilliance, Russell T. Davies. But it’s just… it’s extremely thrilling. And when I was dreaming, when I was a little boy, dreaming of growing up and being an actress, this is what I was imagining.
instagram
I know you’ve been friends with Russell T. Davies. How did that friendship come about and when did you get the call to join Doctor Who?
It was kind of a perfect storm, how we became friends. I was dating my now-husband, Michael Abbott, who’s a good friend of Russell’s. So our holiday show was coming through Manchester at a time that Russell was in Manchester, and my husband reached out and he came and saw the show. And that was maybe four years ago. And then over the years, Russell has come to see many of my shows.
And I’ll tell you candidly, after I was offered the role [on Doctor Who] and I accepted it, Russell told me that he saw my show Together Again, Again with my music partner, Major Scales, which is a show where I play myself in my 80s, a kind of dystopian look at my future. Russell said that he walked home from the show that night and decided, ‘Jinkx is the person I want to have play this role.’ So he advocated for me to play this role, and it’s just one of those moments where everything fell into place at the perfect time. I think old me would’ve been nervous, like, ‘Oh, is he just giving me this role because we’re friends and he’s taking pity on me?’ But with some things that have happened lately, I guess I’m trusting my abilities and my know-how a little bit more. Hi I see you have now made the mistake of asking me about my custom lore in the tags I will now become an unskippable cutscene TO PREFACE idk the downward spiral is really depressing and doesn't do a lot for me? The idea that all vampires eventually lose their humanity no matter how hard they struggle makes the struggle itself less meaningful to me. I want it to be MY fault when my character loses a point of humanity SO Enter Stage Left: The Childer of Ceridwen Founded by a Tremere antitribu elder named Ceridwen Coslett, the Childer of Ceridwen are a high humanity fanatical consensualist group based in Cardiff. They believe that feeding, blood bonds, the embrace, and even some disciplines must be used only with consent, which uh. Makes life pretty difficult. Ceridwen herself is Childe of Carna, having caught her eye when the then ancilla was traveling for work. She was an accomplished botanist and hedge sorcerer in life, and Carna decided to Embrace her and bring her back to Vienna to be indoctrinated. The two were then attacked by a Sabbat cell en route, and Ceridwen was captured, presumed dead; Carna left her for dead, returned to Vienna, and never spoke of her again. In reality, Ceridwen was subjected to the Vaulderie before being saved by Mithraic vassals led by Art Morgan. In Mithras's service, Ceridwen grew to be the powerful witch she is today. She adopted several childer, mostly caitiffs, gangrel, and Tremere antitribu, and sired her own childe, Ekaterina, notably taking an entire year to let the woman decide if she wanted to step into the night. The sect itself is very small, with only a couple dozen members, some of whom (namely Ekaterina and her childe Harmony) are also members of the Camarilla. They are heavily aligned with the Bahari (it's complicated), House Carna (which Ceridwen helped found after reconciling with her sire in the late 2000s), and the Garou of Wales, though most of them are suspicious of all but the most virtuous vampires. The idea of Ceridwen and her sect is to provide an achievable ideal of a 'virtuous' vampire (rather than just drizzle a thin layer of golconda everywhere) for characters to look up to. Ceridwen stands to be not just a role model but an accusation to less humane kindred: if she could do it, than your failures are your own fault. Having her be a figure in my character backgrounds gives my characters a sense of moral agency that makes the World of Darkness seem so much more vibrant, but also scarier- with a light that bright, it casts a hell of a shadow.
Ok cutscene over thank you for listening I will now slink back into the darkness
NO OH MY GOD THIS IS SO GOOD granted about halfway through i got lost in a bunch of words i don’t know but i’m obsessed with this actually

Behind the Scenes of The Christmas Invasion (Part 38)
Excerpt from Russell T. Davies' article in the Radio Times (17-30 December 2005):
2005 turned out to be a remarkable year, even for a Time Lord. Way back in January, the production team was cowering in the caves of BBC Wales, dreading a big, loud, public failure. It seemed like some grand folly - an old, dead sci-fi show, revived in primetime? Madness! I had my bags packed and a one-way ticket to Albuquerque in my fist, ready to flee. But to everyone's surprise, people seemed to welcome back that rarest of things, a genuine TV hero. The Tardis came home. Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper burnt their way across the screen, reinventing the concept of Doctor and companion. Best of all, we attracted an audience of children. As a result of all this, I got my Christmas present early - a commission for a brand-new, 60-minute Doctor Who special. It took zero-point-six seconds to think of the title, The Christmas Invasion. Those three words just sum up the whole thrill of Doctor Who - the familiar and the dangerous jammed together to make something new. [...] I wanted a proper adventure, and a proper threat on a worldwide scale, with added danger, laughs, and heartbreak - because this is also the advent of a brand-new Doctor. With David Tennant now at the helm of the Tardis, bringing a wholly different dynamic to the show, we decided to make the story even more epic. For the cast and crew, Christmas came in July. Which meant that our production base, Cardiff, had no choice but to join in. They're used to us now in old Caerdydd. They barely blinked as we decked the city centre with tinsel, and then, in true Doctor Who style, blew it all up. Passers-by smiled and trudged happily through the fake snow. And here's a funny thing - people see snow and think it's cold, even in summer. They shiver and stamp their feet! I wanted to tell them it was fake, that the show was made of paper - except I was too busy flapping my arms to keep warm!
For more, see [ part one ] of the Christmas Invasion Behind-the-scenes posts (although [ part two ] appears to be the most popular one in this set…), or click the [ #whoBtsCi ] tag or the full episode list [ here ]
