Paper Piece, a performance by Benjamin Patterson Arrangements by Stuart Jackson Performed at The Ausgang Plaza, Montreal QC March 22nd, 2023 After having first performed a version of Benjamin Patterson’s “Paper Piece” by invitation of Stuart Jackson and Amanda Gutiérrez at SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art in Montreal, on April 17th, 2021, Kodama Cartonera members participated in another rendition of this Fluxus performance with special arrangements by Jackson, as a part of the repertoire for his solo show "Aural Readymades," including pieces by Patterson, Carola Bauckholt, Brian Ferneyhough, Iannis Xenakis, and Rebecca Saunders. Some of the questions we wanted to answer this time through making and performing was regarding the cardboard device’s sonority. How many sounds can a cardboard book produce? What kind of sounds? Which surfaces (glossy, porous, and so on) are more prone to which sounds, and under which circumstances?

This November’s Sotto Voce program - “In barren lands, I linger bitter” - featured Voces in a variety of formations - from my solo performance of Enno Poppe’s “Wespe” to Carola Bauckholt’s quirky quintet “Nein Allein.” One of the strongest performances of the evening was the SSAA quartet “Concealed Imaginings” by Sotto Voce’s composer-in-residence Jamie Leigh Sampson. The piece beautifully emphasizes the different voices of the ensemble while also bringing them together in powerful moments to articulate wild harmonies. Watching this video, I experienced the piece in a new way. The opening is particularly striking, as it systematically introduces the four voices on fragmented texts. At first the solo voices are posed against a passive but anxious background texture, but slowly all the voices chime in around one another and coalesce into a kind of Greek chorus which sings a chilling tale. Based on the story of Susanna and the Elders Sampson’s piece beautifully captures both the young woman’s innocent day-dreaming and her terror when she realizes she has been watched while bathing. The climactic ending sonority is especially chilling. The subject matter and passion of the music certainly seems like a highly relevant work in the current political moment.
