MR. BUNGLE MELVINS  ☆ SPOTLIGHTS ★ The Showbox, Seattle
  Photo Review by Chris Schanz
One might ask what would bring me out of retirement? Was I retired? What the hell have I been doing for the past three years? All things Doomed and Stoned have been in flux for me. I’ve been focusing on my day job. I’ve been focusing on my family. I’ve been focusing on my garden. All this focusing has left me nearsighted. Blurry. The COVID era left me with a shitty hangover (not long COVID – I’m just trying to forget that shit and move on!). Sure – I’ve shot shows, band portraits, weddings, funerals yadda yadda fucking yadda. I wanted a sign that the universe is ready for my gifts, once again.
Enter Mr. Bungle and The Melvins. The Geek Show Tour, sponsored by Ipecac Records celebrates both the vast accomplishments of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle) and The Melvins – on their 40th anniversary! The perfect lure to get me off my ass and feel like I actually can contribute something to music, art and photography in general without licking the taint of Instagram and an AI-generated algorithmic overlord soon set to devour us, Titans, Gods and all.
The Showbox at the Market is the perfect set. I feel at home there, usually right by the soundboard. So many shows seen there – Sonic Youth, Nudedragons (Soundgarden), Brothers Of the Sonic Cloth, Sleep, Uncle Acid, Bell Witch, Graveyard, Chelsea Wolfe, The Black Angels – on and on, and on and on. It’s by far Seattle’s best concert hall, IMHO.
SPOTLIGHTS
I admit. I wasn’t prepared for Spotlights. A buddy of mine in Denver by way of San Francisco said they’re sweetly DOOMY. I was in. I got three songs to fall in love. Head over heels! Words escape my brain, only memories of sweet, subsonic joy flowing through my chest and brain. I followed up with Sarah Quintenero after the show at the merch booth, loading up on their vinyl. I’m blasting “Tidals” on vinyl while writing this in my cave, but “Alchemy for the Dead” is a MASTERPIECE! I’ve been binging on their Bandcamp all week now. Bold, deep bass fuzz, ethereal vocals and serrated guitar riffs. My new summer soundtrack.
They’re still on tour – and I highly advise you to see them now!
Alchemy For The Dead by Spotlights
Spotlights Setlist
"The Alchemist" (2023’s Alchemy For The Dead)
"Sunset Burial" (2023’s Alchemy For The Dead)

MELVINS
This brings me back to the Melvins. The force that shaped my twenties in Seattle. My band Fuzzbud had a six-degrees-of-Kevin Bacon thing with a Morton, WA / Monteseno, WA, somebody’s cousin played in a band that opened for…whatevs. We tuned to DUH flat and had a good time. BUT…The Melvins were always a mainstay in any of my playlists.
King Buzzo did NOT disappoint! I was singing along from the photo pit. I was kidding beforehand that there should be some sort of SNL skit – a play by play commentary of the photo pit action. Think Howard Cosell announcing each of the photogs falling over each other for the shots. I thought it was funny, anyways. I’m a dork.
ANYWHOO. Buzzo provides! Dale’s a GOD. I got my HEALTHY fix of Houdini, culminating in a THREE BASS OVERLOAD on Night Goat with Sara Qintenero from Spotlights and Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle joining Steve McDonald to rumble your bunghole. What did I miss by NOT seeing the tour finale in San Francisco? A reunion of Fantomas (Mike, Buzz and Dave Lombardo)! When these guys get together, (black) magic always happens!
The Bride Screamed Murder by Melvins
Melvins Setlist
"I Can’t Shake It" (1998 split with Cosmic Psychos, Some Girls/I Can’t Shake It)
"Zodiac" (1990’s Bullhead)
"Copache" (1993’s Houdini)
"I Want to Hold Your Hand" (2018’s Pinkus Abortion Technician - Beatles Cover)
"Hammering" (2022’s Bad Mood Rising)
"Never Say You’re Sorry" (2022’s Bad Mood Rising)
"Evil New War God" (2010’s The Bride Screamed Murder)
"Let It All Be" (1999’s The Bootlicker)
"Honey Bucket" (1993’s Houdini)
"Revolve" (1994’s Stoner Witch)
"Night Goat" (1993’s Houdini - with Steve McDonald, Spotlights Sarah Quintero and Mr. Bungle bass Trevor Dunn on basses)

MR. BUNGLE
The main event. I knew they led with the Mr. Rogers theme on most nights. ADORABLE! But to my surprise, and delight! They performed the John Sebastian theme to “Welcome Back Kotter”! FUCK YES. I’m a Sweathog and everyone knows it! We would also be treated to the Pepto Bismol jingle not too far into the set.
I was wanting, wishing for a few more songs from 1991’s Mr. Bungle release, primarily some “Squeeze Me Macaroni” and “Stubb-A-Dub” action. Stubb was my go-to track in our house in college. After many a trip, I believed I was the proverbial “family dog” to our tribe…just elated to be along for the ride scrambling from party to party. Luckily for me, I got some “My Ass Is On Fire” and I was satiated. “Speak Spanish Or Die” brought me right back to my thrash and skating days (Days. Rolled my ankle on the half-pipe and drove the crew to all the spots after that). Van Halen’s Loss of Control? A TOTAL surprise and I was elated! Ear to ear grins and giggles!
I came for the Melvins, Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo, but I left with a deep adoration for Spotlights and a 365-day calendar of “The Many O-Faces of Scott Ian” and that’s more than OK. I’m in love. Thank you, Scott, for fulfilling this schoolboy’s adolescent dreams, 30 years later!
The Night They Came Home by Mr. Bungle
Mr. Bungle Setlist
"Welcome Back" (John Sebastian cover)
"Bungle Grind"
"Eracist"
"Spreading the Thighs of Death"
"Loss for Words" (Corrosion of Conformity cover)
"Hypocrites"
"Speak English or Die" (Stormtroopers of Death cover) (changed to "Speak Spanish or Die")
"Glutton for Punishment"
"Anarchy Up Your Anus"
"Methematics"
"Hell Awaits" (Slayer cover) (intro)
"True/Cold War/True"
"Raping Your Mind"
"World Up My Ass" (Circle Jerks cover) (with Michael Crain)

"Solidifying Our Sound" : A Conversation With Delta IV's Michael Schorr And Jared Pace
Featured Photo by Chris Schanz There’s been an electronic music renaissance in the last few years, and SFI Recording has been the epicenter of that. The circuital pulse emanating from the Pacific Northwest home base of Andrew Crawshaw’s record label can be felt in a visceral way from coast to coast. It’s building into something big, real, and beautiful. It’s the kind of electronic music you fall…

Grateful LL-admin thoughts  :-)
It has been a while, so, here goes.
After over two years of doing Lux Lit admin, of being the gatekeeper, deciding what gets reblogged on our site, I am still overwhelmed, with joy, that I have the opportunity to choose what gets reblogged.
The Lux Lit Crew, a group of talented Tumblr original photographers (and lovely human beings) find and submit other Tumblr original photographers’ work to our Drafts. They trust me to pick what will get reblogged from all the photos they submit. That is still amazing to me after all this time: they trust me to choose. I am also grateful to the Lux Lit Crew because they challenge me to expand my vision as a photographer by exposing me to their often brilliant, refreshingly unexpected choices. I am grateful to all of them.
Paul Castellano @babalou71
Chris Lindhout @placethatechoes
Jules Falk Hunter @justjulespictures
Georg Nickolaus @der-gorgonaut
Joe Heredia @damagedintransit
Tom Schanz @coloursarefine
Kate Rieke @katerieke
Then there are the Tumblr original photographers who submit their own work. It is so very courageous of them to share their work for judging. Almost every single day, I get to see so many great images. This allows me to refine my vision of what is great photography (and why it is great photography), which helps me refine my vision of my own work, as it evolves. All of the artists who submit their work to Lux Lit humble me with their generosity and courage. I am grateful to all of them.
Finally, I am grateful for all the Tumblr original photographers who share their art, their thoughts, their lives on Tumblr. There are so many popular Tumblr photographers and there are also so many new, undiscovered photographers, and all of them are a source of inspiration. I am grateful for the Tumblrs who reblog our photographs and other content. (You can find a lit of them here.) I am grateful for the Tumblrs who take the time to appreciate the art we share. Whether we create and share, reblog, or click on the little <3, we are all part of a thriving Tumblr original photographer community.
I am grateful to all of you for letting me be part of this community.

Insanely honored to be part of Chris Schanz's (@ssschanzzz) exhibit in Fremont with a bunch of my heroes and friends and photographed by one of the sweetest and most talented photographers in town. Chris came out to so many of our shows and supported us and took photos for free because he liked us. It's efforts like that, cross discipline, that keep this scene so alive and so in love. I so love that he has QR codes so that you can go listen to all the bands after you have checked out the photo. So much history here. How To Create Content That People Care About
~Bacon's Blog~
Tumblr media
Photographs by Chris Schanz
Here’s a thought I had while watching people conduct interviews at Hellfest this year. I was watching these journalists bring out all this fancy equipment to do surface level interviews with a small handful of bands. Meanwhile, I get more traction producing episodes of my Bacons Bits video series with just a cell phone and less than five minutes of a bands time. And like who even gives a shit about video interviews done by amateur journalists in hot rooms, asking the same five questions over and over? This led to me asking myself a question about DIY bands, because my brain is weird like that. What I thought bands had to ask themselves was this: are you creating the type of content people want to consume?
Tumblr media
Hippie Death Cult
This is a really rough question to have to ask yourself because it might force you to recalibrate your band’s entire approach to getting fans. However when you embrace it, you start to see some very real opportunities that can help bring more people into the fold of your band. To answer this question, we’re going to look at the fundamental rule of social media content: thinking about how others perceive our content, and then looking into the kinds of shifts you can make that will get people wanting to consume your content. Once you get to that point things will start to fall in your favor. Let’s dive in.
Black Snake by Hippie Death Cult
I. The Fundamental Rule of Social Media Content
The reason that people give a shit about this article, the videos I create, the podcast I have and all my other content is that I’m creating something people want and putting out stuff that tells a story. If you look at my feed on Instagram, you’ll see that a third of it is stuff people want – that is to say, cool band advice in the form of my Bacon’s Bits videos. The rest of it is usually stuff that helps add to the overall narrative of what I’m doing.
Tumblr media
Pushy
I try to share personal history and show off the cool stuff I get to see, but it all ties into the overall story of what I’m doing, which further bolsters the fundamental thing people want — which is the advice videos. Every post I create is built around this rule. Is this something that people who I don’t personally know are going to want to see? If the answer is "no" then I usually don’t post it.
Hard Wish by PUSHY
II. Learning How Others Perceive Your Content
Bands need to do the same thing – they need to look at their content objectively and ask themselves: where is the concrete value in what I am posting about? How is this going to interest my audience? What information am I communicating? So often, bands don’t have a clear idea of what they’re communicating, while the message can be very simple. Anything from "we had a great rehearsal and wrote a new song" to "here’s an upcoming show" works, as long as there’s a clear message.
Tumblr media
Holy Grove
You need to share part of the experience or deliver a reason to make people want to keep coming back. The most obvious way to create value for the listener, and the one most relevant to bands is to create really fucking good music and have a really good live show. It’s therefore easy to post videos because you’re sick live and, as such, people will want to check back because you’re that good.
II by Holy Grove
III. Shifting Your Content Strategy
So, if you think your music is so good that randoms are going to dig in, how then do you create content that people get excited about? Well first and foremost, you need to actually create it for where people are, not where you want them to be. I know that your personal Facebook page, for example, gets a lot of traction. But guess what? There’s a limit to that. You need to push content on platforms that people are excited to engage with.
Tumblr media
Mos Generator
It’s the same reason that big labels focus less and less on premiers, preferring instead to run stuff on their own platforms as people actually check a label’s Instagram. Although, the average amount of views (even on a big site) is usually pretty small – nothing compared to what a label gets from tossing up a new song on their own channel that has thousands of subscribers. So, you can either start playing the game with this in mind, or you can keep creating wherever you want and stay screaming into the void.
Shadowlands by MOS GENERATOR
The concept is simple. It’s like you’re day trading in attention. You’re exchanging on the simple fact that you need people to pay attention to your band so they can see your music is good. You can’t do that on platforms that nobody gives a shit about. You need to do it on platforms that not only interest fans, but that you can also actually create stuff for. However, remember that the more you document, the more you’ll be able to create. So when you think about the fundamental rule of social media, ask yourself how it brings value to those around you and be amazed as people start to really dig in to what you have to offer.

 GRAVEYARD
 UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS
 DEMOB HAPPY
~Live at The Showbox~
Review and Photos by Chris Schanz
Tumblr media
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats have always held a mystical allure for me from the moment I saw the music video for "Ritual Knife." I knew at that moment they’d be on my playlist forever. The retro stylings in mixing that carries through every recording slowly peels back the fabric of space and time.
Tumblr media
I was relating to a coworker why I’d be taking the day off after the shoot, saying, “If I get back from Joshua Tree in 1972 in one piece, I’ll be shaking the sands of time out of my hobnail boots the rest of the day.” She totally got it. It’s the soundtrack to a biker grindhouse flick I always wanted to see. The metaphysical embodiment and manifestation of swagger.
Tumblr media
I’ve explored other rabbit holes since then -- and many more still since aligning myself with Doomed & Stoned. They’ve led me back to a familiar territory, my long-lost summer of love plopped down in Sweden and allowed to flourish and evolve.
Tumblr media
My lifelong love of Swedish Psychedelia was reignited when I discovered Stockholm rocker Dungen. Swedish electronica pulled me into the music scene deeper still via The Knife and Fever Ray. Black metal? Yup! They've got that, too. So, when I heard Graveyard, it spoke to me in another way than a “Swedish amalgamation of said genre” would be. It’s authentic psychedelic blues. Fuck...it’s blues. It’s rock. AMAZING rock 'n' roll! The rasp of his voice is so versatile. Phenomenal guitar work. I’m in love!
Tumblr media
I jumped at the chance to shoot for Doomed & Stoned. I think I fired this one across the bow. I wanted to be up close. No barriers. Full stage volume! I had one opportunity to see Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats before at Nuemo’s a few years back.
Tumblr media
It can get a little packed in there so I hung back with friends. I wasn’t shooting at that time, but I was curious as to why there were no dearth of photos documenting their live sets? I found out that night...ha!
Tumblr media
Demob Happy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Opening the night was English rockers Demob Happy. This was the first I had heard them and I was thrilled to hear vocal harmonies, in perfect pitch, from singer-bassist Matthew Marcantonio and drummer Thomas Armstrong. This powerful trio is rounded out by guitarist Adam Godfrey carving out masterful riffs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their album Holy Doom is an amazing album full of uplifting, high energy blues rock, fantastic vocal arrangements and, you guessed it, classic British swagger. A daring psychedelic pop crossover! All energy and precision on stage!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats
Tumblr media
For some reason, I thought Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats would go on last, but there they were: dropping all the lights and smoking the packed house in fog. The screen projections, spinning and morphing with their blood-drenched mind-bending guitar work.
Tumblr media
There were times before when I thought the recording process the band used for their studio albums was at risk of becoming shtick, a trick from the producers. It wasn’t. The Uncle Acid sound is thoroughly authentic.
Tumblr media
It carries over in their live set, as warm as a bursting Ruby 6550 catching fire. Dark and foreboding, only neon blue and red highlighting their silhouettes in the fog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up close, I can finally see them, see their faces and fingering. As hard as it was to snap a pic, I knew I was in good company. All the photographers earned their scars that night. We all love them – and were there for the show, shots or not! Three songs weren’t enough for us, although the set went on for the next hour. I didn’t want it to stop!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Graveyard
Tumblr media
I was prepared for anything when Graveyard came on. Thankfully, their lighting director had a more straightforward design in mind. I was thrilled to know every lyric from the Peace album, and knew which lines I wanted to capture. I tried not to sing along. I don’t want to be that guy – especially in the pit. Joakim Nilsson’s voice just draws me in and doesn’t let go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One hour set and encore and I excused myself the best spot in the Showbox – back to the sound booth and main entrance. The wood floors, the stucco, the pillars – everything sound resonates and reflects through the room to that one spot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite sight line. The same one I saw Sonic Youth from, The Melvins, Soundgarden, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth. Welcome to the high temple of Seattle, Graveyard! Come back soon!

Sleep, Bell Witch Play The Showbox
~By Chris Schanz~
Pardon my fanboy dialogue, but damn that was a killer night! I’ve been a huge Sleep fan since 1994 when good ol’ Freddy Krueger (our affectionate name for our resident culture vulture/dealer) played Dragonaut for our band Fuzzbud in 1994. I was hooked. It’s all I wanted to listen to; it’s all I ever wanted to be. To transition from a Sabbath cover band to full-fledged stoner outfit spanning 20+ years is a feat of grand magnitude -- epic, at the very least.
Tumblr media
I’ve never shot a gig in the pit at The Showbox before, but Lord knows I’ve tried! Having Doomed & Stoned lead the charge really set me up for success on this Tuesday night in June. Sure, I knew the room would be a challenge. I’m used to small venues who allow flash photography and as many shots as it takes. In this historic venue, we were only allowed to shoot during the first song of each set. I say we, but really it was just me for most of the night, as the paparazzi didn't arrive until much later, giving me a virtual exclusive. Nevertheless, I had to dial my shit in quick to mind the one-song rule. I was sweating!
Bell Witch
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been keep tabs on Bell Witch for awhile, though not knowing until recently that I came from Adrian Guerra’s hometown (separated by only a few years). I followed the Emerald City duo's songs and imagery online, but had yet to see them in person. Bell Witch were already a local legend by the time they were crippled by Adrian’s death. The Mirror Reaper album became a monolithic testament to how immense a two-piece can aspire to be. A full 45-minute concept album recorded by Portland’s Billy Anderson, which I had purchased online (one track). I picked up the double gatefold at the show and their earlier album Longing to legitimize my collection and education.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What an honor to be the only photog in the pit! I had license to get up close and personal! Dylan Desmond’s six-string bass playing is more atmospheric and melodic in person. Jesse Shreibman’s drumming is profound and dramatic, augmented by MOOG pedals and samples. True professionals. It seemed more of a ceremony than a rock show!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Follow The Band | Get Their Music
Tumblr media
Sleep
I hit the merch line in between sets to grab more booty (those Sleep baseball T’s rock!). I must say, the crowd tonight was the most joyous, friendly and courteous I’ve ever seen. The line wrapped the whole venue and didn’t quit! It was definitely one smokey love fest! A veritable who’s who of stoner, psyche, industrial, hardcore and doom artists in the Seattle scene! I caught up with the usual suspects from Foil, Future Kill, Resinator, Luna Negra, Feast, Luna Moss, Kings of Cavalier (we’re doing that photo shoot, Reed!). Hugs all around!

The Showbox is a favorite Sleep venue, Al Cisneros, Matt Pike, and Jason Roeder having delivered a particularly legendary concert here on 4/20 back in 2015. Their setlist spanned twenty years of materia, kicking off with new hits off The Sciences album. Then there was "Holy Mountain," which sent me reeling! I was in the pit only for The Sciences, but swayed in the soundwaves until I could hear "Dragonaut," after which I snuck out to grab a Seattle Dog and hit the road. Thank you Billy, Sleep, Bell Witch and Seattle for making it my favorite concert of the past 20 years!

Mos Generator  Takes Us On A Rousing Romp Through The ‘Shadowlands’
~By Tom Hanno~
Tumblr media
Album Art by Adam Burke
The prolific Port Orchard, Washington trio MOS GENERATOR has been cooking up another feisty full-length rocker for us. The eight songs of 'Shadowlands' (2018), out May 18th, make up one incredible release and I’m very happy to be reviewing it for you guys. I know this band is a big one for a lot of people out there and this, full disclosure, is my first proper initiation into a Mos Generator album, as I’ve previously only listened to a song or two here and there. I am happy to report that this is an excellent album full of powerful riffs and influences that range from Led Zeppelin to Lynyrd Skynyrd, not to mention some fantastic vocal work.
youtube
The title track introduces the album and is one of the more rocking tunes on the album (not that they all don’t rock). The opening riff is southern-flavored, with a heaping helping of Zeppelin swagger. As it leads into the first verse, it gets heavier and then lightens for the verse itself. This surprised me, but generated some genuine excitement to hear how this song would play out. I love the verse riffs, especially, and Tony’s vocals are suitably matched with them. "Shadowlands" is a killer song any way you slice it and a great way to open up the album.

The album closes in grand fashion, too, with "The Wild and the Gentle Dogs." The acoustic guitar that ushers us into the opening moments the track is beautifully written. Sean Booth's bass work is deliciously well-played. Vocally, this sounds like Dave Brockie has returned from the grave to add his truculent style to this wicked number, only in the visage of Tony Reed. The midsection of the song is an ominously toned riff. Listen on for a lead that Jimmy Page would be proud to call his own. This is just a seriously badass song from start to finish.
"Drowning in Your Loving Cup" is awesome, too. I really like the lyrical content, which is well suited to the thematic power and catchy rhythm of the music. There are once again spots where Tony has that Dave Brockie tone to his voice. I love that, as I sorely miss Dave Brockie’s musical escapades.
My top pick here, though, is "The Destroyer." It's easy to get into Tony's driving guitar play, which works perfectly with the Jon Garrett's steady-on drumming. The breakout leads and guitar licks bear a distinct Jimmy Page influence, an element of Mos Generator that I feel never gets old. The chorus is enormous and as catchy as anything on the album. Every aspect of this track speaks to me in a phenomenal way.
Shadowlands is a fantastic listen, brilliantly conceived and executed, an LP that fans old and new alike will be able to really sink their teeth into. Mos Generator has stacked the deck with everything a good album ought to have: killer riffs, strong songwriting, great vocal work, and the ability to wear one's influences on the sleeve, while carving out a distinct sound. May 18th is the street date for this Listenable Records spin. I think you'd be well advised to grab this great album and give it a prime place in your collection.

SEATTLE AFTER SUNDOWN
~Words & Photos by Chris Schanz~
Doomed & Stoned's chief contributor from the Emerald City gives us a decidedly Northwest perspective on the music scene and how it affected him in 2017. Here are the albums the ruled the night, mixed in among the Chris' unparalelled photographic vision. (Editor)

Bell Witch -- Mirror Reaper
Mirror Reaper by Bell Witch
Finding out that Adrian Guerra was the younger cousin of a schoolmate of mind and from my hometown after his death, not seeing them play live before his death, and discovering just how awesome they were may be a tragedy. Seeing Dylan Desmond come back with a stunning tribute and beautiful album this year made it

Year Of The Cobra -- Burn Your Dead
Burn Your Dead by Year of the Cobra
A wonderful couple, rewriting the power duo dynamic for our local heavy and doom scene. Killer album packaging, as well (I’m not just saying that because of the photos, either). A perfect sophomore album for the band and shows growth in the songwriting curve.

Substratum -- Substratum
Substratum by Substratum
While it’s an “official” debut LP, Substratum has been around awhile. Shredding metal riffs and searing, soaring vocals that rival Vengeance-era Judas Priest and Seattle’s own Sanctuary (RIP Warrel Dane). WATCH THESE ONES.

Chelsea Wolfe -- Hiss Spun
Hiss Spun by CHELSEA WOLFE
I’ve been a rabid fan since Apokalypsis. I finally got to see her up close at the Showbox. The things I had to endure to get there (drunken Amazon bro’s and all) made my effort all the more worthwhile to hear these songs performed live.

Heiress/Great Falls -- Split 7”

Two of my favorite and heaviest acts in one 7”, part of a three 7” package on Mylene Sheath Records that utilizes the artwork by Demian Johnson from Great Falls beautifully. Very collectible!

Terrasone -- Reclaim
Take Off by Terrasone
Sadly, this album was released posthumously, as the lineup refocused on other projects (Infinite Flux and The Deaddrones). I regret not being able to see my good friends perform live, even though there were ample opportunities! Long live Terrasone!

Crystal Fairy -- Crystal Fairy
Crystal Fairy by Crystal Fairy
If the Melvins produce an album in any flavor – it makes my list!! Gifted on vinyl to me on my birthday by my brother and sister-in-law, all Melvins projects carry my favorite musical memories of our band together.

Kings of Cavalier -- Sacred Fruit
Reid’s Viking vocals rage and Ian’s guitar work shines on this recording by Jack Endino at Soundhouse. A proud addition to the Seattle heavy scene family, and I’m proud to call them friends! And that album art? Classy!

Old Iron -- Lupus Metallorum
Lupus Metallorum (see album description for vinyl) by Old Iron
I saw Jerad Shealey play bass with Heiress when I was introduced to them a few years back -- just missing his set with Old Iron. It’s in my New Year resolutions to see more shows and not miss my friends’ performances. Great album and tour!

Brett Netson and SNAKES -- Snakes/Crosss
SNAKES/CROSSS by Brett Netson and SNAKES
More name dropping, please. I split a 7” with Caustic Resin in 1994 -- so vague, so early in their game that it only exists on cassette anymore. Caustic Resin were early Pacific Northwest stoner-desert rock pioneers. Brett continued his journey touring with Built to Spill and the Mark Lanegan Band. Snakes/Crosses is a long, dark road through the desert at midnight, passing through the badlands in a thunderstorm. A journey worthy of Doomed & Stoned...and once again, not just because I took some bitchin’ photos at their last Seattle gig.
Tumblr media
PALOOKA -- Turbo Excelente
Once again, it’s NOT just because it took a year to produce the photography, cover art, typography and marketing collateral – it’s because PALOOKA ROCKS! Technically not doom or stoner, but essential listening for the local heavy listening buff. Consisting of Seattle rock royalty (NW Metalfest, anyone?), PALOOKA’s sophomore album is a London Bridge Studio masterpiece evoking Mother Love Bone, Alice Cooper and that BIG, THICK ROCK guitar mastery lost since 1977.

Twelve Thirty Dreamtime -- Dreamsongs
Dreamsongs 1997-1999 by Twelve Thirty Dreamtime
We near the end of my list with a look ahead at 2018. Devil’s Child Records does it again, releasing the 1997 project by Mos Generator’s Tony Reed on a beautiful smoked vinyl (available in February).

There's more of Chris Schanz's work to be amazed by. Head on over to his site and you'll get lost for hours. He's also covered quite a few Doomed & Stoned events for us, including this year's High Summer Fest. Check all his published work to date in these pages right here.
