Disney+ has greenlit a pilot for WITCH MOUNTAIN, a new take of the film franchise of yesteryear starring Bryce Dallas Howard (that also had an update featuring The Rock a while back).
Full cast list, and release (via Disney) below:
Tumblr media
Disney+ announced today a pilot greenlight for “Witch Mountain,'' a reimagining of the successful film franchise. The series is a modern reinvention of the cult classic that takes place in the shadow of “Witch Mountain,” following two teens that develop strange abilities and discover their sleepy suburb may not be as idyllic as it seems.
Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World: Dominion”) stars in the leading role as “Audrey,” Tia's devoted and loving mother.  Her husband died from a mental illness and she tries to reassure a fretful Tia that she shows no sign of following her father's dark spiral. A warm mama bear type, but like everyone in this town, not everything is as it seems.
Howard is a multi-hyphenate creator who continues to work both on-screen and behind the camera. As an actor, she recently starred alongside Chris Pratt in Universal’s “Jurassic World” franchise and next stars in Matthew Vaughn’s spy thriller ”Argylle” for Apple TV+. Earlier this year, Howard lent her voice to the Star Wars character “Yaddle” in the animated Disney+ series “Tales of the Jedi.” Howard is represented by Entertainment 360, WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
Isabel Gravitt (“The Watcher”), Levi Miller (“Streamline”), Bianca “b” Norwood (“We Crashed”) and Jackson Kelly  (“Straight Man”) have been cast in the pilot.
Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas co-wrote the pilot and are executive producers; Augustine Frizzell (“Euphoria”) will direct and is executive producer on the pilot.  John Fox and John Davis of Davis Entertainment are executive producing as well as Gary Marsh. The Disney Branded Television series is produced by ABC Signature, part of Disney Television Studios.
Tumblr media
Isabel Gravitt (series regular) as “Tia,” a straight-A student who's regarded by her classmates as “perfect,” although she regards herself as flawed. She's terrified of failure and is plagued by nightmares and fears that her late father's schizophrenia is starting to exhibit itself in her. Tia has “hallucinations” in which people around her step outside their living bodies and voice their deepest, darkest fears and desires and rages. Gravitt is known for her series regular role as “Ellie Brannock” in Netflix's hit limited series "The Watcher." She made her debut in CBS's pilot "The History of Us" and had recurring roles in ABC's "American Housewife" and Hulu's "Little Fires Everywhere." Gravitt is represented by Buchwald and Randy James Management.
Tumblr media
Levi Miller (series regular) as “Ben,” a troubled teen who makes ends meet by writing papers for other students but he's got a hot temper and if he slugs another student, he'll be expelled. Ben is best friends with Corey, his co-worker at the diner. He’s recently made a troubling discovery about himself, he can force others in his vicinity to move according to his will and there's something drawing him inexplicably in the direction of Tia. Miller is best known for his roles in “Pan,” “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Better Watch Out.” Most recently, he was seen in the indie film “Streamline,” is also starring in Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter,” and attached to the upcoming British indie “Beach Boys.” Miller is repped by Verve, Rogue Management in the UK, Eaton Management in Australia and attorneys Fred Toczek and Jared Blo
Tumblr media
Bianca “b” Norwood (series regular) as “Corey,” Ben's closest friend, an outsider with tattoos, Corey is a very mature teen who comes across older than they are. They are one step away from expulsion and puts more care into looking like a My Chemical Romance song that became an anime fan.  Corey works at the local diner alongside Ben and is in his circle of trust, but doesn't appreciate it when he tries to act as their protector. Norwood most recently starred in the New York Theatre Workshop production of "American (Tele)visions.'' Most recently, they can be seen in the AppleTV+ series “We Crashed,” as well as the Showtime series “Let the Right One In,” and can be heard voicing a lead role in the new QCODE fantasy podcast series “Birds of Empire.”  Norwood is represented by Innovative and Authentic Talent and Literary Management.
Tumblr media
Jackson Kelly (series regular) as “Peter,” Tia's closest male friend. Peter is lovesick on the subject of Tia, but she's unaware of his charms, and equally unaware of his devotion. But when Tia expresses her concerns about the seemingly impossible happenings around them, she learns that Peter's observant, cautious nature might be an asset in figuring out the mystery around them. Jackson has a busy year ahead with the release of his major recurring role in the highly anticipated AMC series “Straight Man” and “Hard Miles.” He’s currently starring in the fifth installment of the cult-followed Shudder franchise “V/H/S/99.” Kelly is represented by Talent Works and 11:11 Entertainment.

‘Superunknown Redux’ Brings Together a Host of Underground Talent
~Review by Billy Goate~
Tumblr media
Magnetic Eye Records has done it again. They've pulled together some of the most intriguing and accomplished artists of the heavy underground to pay tribute to a legendary album. The last go-round, it was Alice in Chains that got the redux treatment, and now attention is turned to their Seattle peers, the one and only SOUNDGARDEN.
It's no secret that Soundgarden has been influential on many of the musicians featured. Indeed, upon this writer, as well. Their 1995 classic Superunknown established the band's visionary songwriting and instrumentation, and Soundgarden delivered such a virtuosic performance on the album, one wonders how it can be covered at all.
Let Me Drown by Ufomammut
With that said, these are not merely covers, they are loving reinterpretations. In the case of Italian juggernaut Ufomammut, their rendition of "Let Me Drown" is a ghostly allusion to the late Chris Cornell.
My Wave by High Priest
"My Wave" has played out as a kind of grab-it-and-go philosophy of life for me for decades now, its lyrics rejecting that urgent fanaticism that makes us all anxious to parent one another. "Hate if you want to hate, pray if you want to pray, don't come over here [and] piss on my gate, save it just keep it off my wave." High Priest takes the song and elevates it to a place of mystical glory.
Fell on Black Days by Marissa Nadler
If you loved the original album, this won't replace it and you may even feel that some of the songs are uncoverable and "Fell on Black Days" is one of them, namely for how personally the lyrics relate to Cornell. On the other hand, sometimes a song is so good that it begs to be loved by another artist. Chosen for this song: Marissa Nadler, an American singer-songwriter who has been widely praised for her Gothic stylings and sanguine sound. Here, it feels as if we really did drown after the opening track and we're hearing the song sung from the ocean depths.
Mailman by Somnuri
I was excited to see Chicago Doomed & Stoned Festival alumni Somnuri tackling "Mailman," as it's an ideal fit for their temperament. It's such a seething, lonely song about betrayal and revenge, but I've visited it many times in my life. The Brooklyn trio does a fantastic job with it, with vocals that are powerful in their own right and a few menacing touches (the later contrast of clean and dirty vox, for example).
Superunknown by Valley of the Sun
Valley of the Sun takes "Superunknown" for a spin with a certain low-riding desert rock energy and vocals that admirably reach for those famous soaring highs. There are even some Doors-esque organ highlights that seemed perfectly in place, proving how a good song can transcend its original arrangement.
Head Down by Frayle
"Head Down" is a song that perfectly captures the apathetic resignation of deep depression. Frayle hone in on the sparseness of the composition with searching guitar riffing and a creepy, haunted vocal performance that brings alive the pernicious voices of doubt and fear ("We see you laugh, we see you dance, we take that away everyday").
Black Hole Sun by Spotlights
"Black Hole Sun" is another I was skeptical about, but Spotlights have really won me over with their version of it. The contrast of soft singing and strumming guitar and bass was compelling in itself, but the band doubles down on awesome with crackling, fuzzy low-end during the verses and entrancing vocal harmonies. At times, I may prefer this to the original (and that's partly because I don't want that great song to be spoiled by over-familiarity)
Spoonman by Horseburner
I really like what Horseburner does with the famous "Spoonman." Once again, a confident reinterpretation that showcases the band's strengths, namely gnarly guitar, low-end heft, and earthy, roaring vocals. I was happy to hear the contrasting section of both strumming and dueling strings and some bad-ass drumming.
Limo Wreck by Witch Mountain
"Limo Wreck" is a great example of why I think of Soundgarden as doom first, and all other genre distinctions second. It's a dismal affair and Chris Cornell's performance is once again inimitable and, frankly, carries this slow 'n' low ballad. Thankfully, Witch Mountain was chosen for the job and Kayla Dixon's knack for dramatic story-telling helps in convincing us.
The Day I Tried To Live by Beastwars
Beastwars have successfully remolded "The Day I Tried to Live," one of my least favorite songs on the original album, into something I really enjoyed. It's unhinged, agitated, and beastly. Howling Giant stole the show on the AIC Redux with their incredible "Rooster" (our Song of the Year in 2020), and Beastwars comes damned closed to doing it with this one. Their performance is really something else, laying on the Soundgarden worship on thick and projecting something monstrously terrific.
Kickstand by Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows
Jack Harlon and the Dead Crows do much the same with "Kickstand" turning this quick and dirty song into a dreamy psychedelic space rocker that mines the sound for undiscovered emotion. Another cut that elevates the music into something epic, even ethereal.
Fresh Tendrils by The Age of Truth
4th of July by Marc Urselli's SteppenDoom
The Age of Truth summons a heroic sound, transforming "Fresh Tendrils" with sterling chords and rampaging drums. Meanwhile, Marc Urselli's SteppenDoom give us an eerie rendition, not as caustic as Thou's celebrated cover, though the vocal approach is at times quite grizzly. The whole experience is like a warped VHS soundtrack, with spooky whistling sounds as if to suggest the hearing of the wind.
Half by Dozer
I was so happy to see Dozer on the list, especially after the success of their recent album which has pushed the band forward artistically in many ways. They turn this odd little number into a bonafide stadium rager.
Like Suicide by Darkher
Without doubt, "Like Suicide" is one of the most emotionally honest and tragic songs on the record. If I recall the lore correctly, Chris Cornell said this song was inspired by a bird who had a fatal encounter with a sliding glass door, as if an omen. No one can really match the intensity of the original performance, of course, so Darkher had the idea of turning it into a blurry-eyed and beautifully stoic reflection.
While nothing can replace the genius of the original Superunknown, this collection is nonetheless quite welcome and I'm sure choice cuts will show up on playlists of mine. Now I'm ready to check out the Best of Soundgarden, which follows a similar format, without being glued fastidiously to any one album.
Give ear...

Holy fucking shit why can't we make movies like the second Escape to Witch Mountain again
-relatively diverse cast
-weirdly kinky mind control old guy
-a street gang of literal children who live in an abandoned house
-a secret lair in what appears to be a dungeon in the middle of the city of new york
-Bette Davis
-A guy named Victor Gannon (mind control professor)
-aa gang of literal children with matching battle jackets and srm cuffs that are constantly covered in dirt
-the main girl protagonist is dressed like a politician for the whole movie (she's like, 14?)
-it takes place in the 70's so it was filmed on 35 mm film which gives it that crunchy delicious quality
-weirdly good cinematography
-a guy named Sickle who wears only black turtlenecks and black slacks.
-nuclear fission I think

Elements of a Witch Mountain story
My last post about what makes a Witch Mountain story… it wasn’t enough.  It needed more.
Required:
-The Castaways. The children are a mystery even to themselves.  This is where the series has already stumbled: Tia grew up with her parents and worries she inherited mental illness from her father.  So unless they do a Surprise Adoption plot Tia isn’t a Castaway.
Unless! The reveal is that the whole suburb is full of aliens, unless this series starts on Witch Mountain itself, a place we’ve never been able to visit before. But if this is the alien community then these are not the aliens we’re looking for.  The story of Witch Mountain is a story of two young Castaways who don’t really fit in finding their people and the place they belong, “a place full of music and magic, because that’s the only kind of place we could have come from.” so if the “sleepy suburb is not as idyllic as it seems”… the aliens are not good?  The whole suburb is aliens trapped and controlled by evil government forces who try to hide the fact from their kids to protect them?
Hmm.  Not a good start for our new show!
-Siblings not romantic partners.  This story is plenty already, it doesn’t need romance too.  And this is not a paranoia story, it’s not a “who can I trust?” story.  The series does seem to have two supernatural characters but it doesn’t seem like they’re siblings.
-Kids not teenagers.  It wouldn’t be impossible to make a good story with teenagers; they’re teenagers in the book, in fact.  But nowadays writers may feel required to add Modern Teen Issues like drugs, drinking, underage sex—look at Fate’s attempts to be edgy.  Nothing wrong with an edgy story, but Witch Mountain is not an edgy story.
This series has three guys described, which makes me feel weirdly like the show’s Tia is going to be in a reverse-harem anime.  We have Ben, cheater and fellow-student-puncher, who has mind control abilities and will probably be the other supernatural kid.  We have Corey, an outsider with tattoos who’s one step away from expulsion.  And we have Peter, who’s pining over Tia but otherwise seems like the token non-edgy kid.  Yeeeeeeah this is gonna be Fate: The Witch Mountain Saga and please guys can we just not.
-Magic not parapsychology.  Yeah, the kids have telepathic and telekinetic powers but they should be experienced by the viewer as soft magic, not something that can be pinned down and measured with a lot of sci-fi jargon.  The series’ description is vague about what abilities the kids will have, but it seems Tia hallucinates people’s inner selves stepping out of their bodies to reveal their dark secrets, which I guess you have to show telepathy on screen somehow.
The book’s description of the childrens’ abilities was different.  They weren’t telepathic, rather, their people speak at a frequency humans can’t hear.  Tony and Tia could talk to each other but while Tony could also speak normally Tia could only be heard by her brother; everyone else thought she was mute.  Their telekinesis was also much more vague. They could both make things move but Tony could do it better when he played his harmonica, and Tia had a gift for opening locks but only when it’s right to do so.
-A journey of some sort.  It’s a journey story, from not belonging to the place you belong, from danger to safety, from not knowing who you are to being among your people.
Probably should have:
-An outsider father figure.  Someone’s got to take care of these kids!  And someone’s gotta be the audience point of view for the wonder.
-Throwbacks.  A Witch Mountain story should in some way acknowledge that it’s part of a larger body of stories. Maybe have one of the guys play a harmonica as “if you know, you know” sign that he can be trusted.  I saw Race to Witch Mountain on its opening day, in the evening after work.  Picked up a friend or two and there were maybe six other people in the theater.   There’s a scene where we see the Winnebago sailing down the highway, the music swells-- and this whoop of delight went up from every single person in that theater.  So also:
-A Winnebago.
-Animals.  Winkie the cat, Junkyard the dog, horses, the bears Tia frees… this story is about kids who are different and their connection with animals and nature is part of what makes them different.  A theme in the book is the escape from the banal and greedy works of man to a more beautiful and better place in nature.
-Some rich dude trying to make bank off the kids.
Things I’d like to see:
-The right mountains.  The book takes place in the Blue Ridge mountains where Alexander Key lived.  There’s a Stoney Creek in North Carolina that may be the town the kids travel through.  All the movies have been filmed in the Sierra Nevadas, very nice mountains but not the right mountains.  I’d love it if the next incarnation of Witch Mountain were to set the story where its roots are.

Disney+ is doing a Witch Mountain franchise reboot starring Bryce Dallas Howard (who is fantastic in everything I see her in) and it's being produced/developed by Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas, who are responsible for the excellent and brilliant 12 Monkeys tv series.
There were 2 possible paths of my response to this news and it was going to be either "stop ruining my childhood favorites" or "yes PLEASE." I'm going with the latter.
