The Beanie Bubble (2023) Review
Tumblr media
The most fascinating aspect of The Beanie Bubble is that it offers us a Zach Galifianakis without any facial hair. Not even a stache. And my my is it a sight to behold. It doesn’t look right though. No not at all, no. Go grow back your hair, dude. Please.
Plot: The unbelievable tale of one of America's most fascinating phenomena -- Beanie Babies. Flashing back to the '90s and early 2000s, an in-depth look at how the era-defining zeitgeist came to be.
The Beanie Bubble follows the new Hollywood trend of movies based on behind-the-scenes of pop culture phenomenon, with the other notable entries this year so far being Tetris, Flamin’ Hot, BlackBerry and Air. And look, Tetris is one of my favourite films this year, and Air manages to surprisingly be an engaging and interesting watch even though at the end of the day its a movie about a shoe. So naturally I gave The Beanie Bubble a go, especially since Ted Lasso is now over and I must still justify my Apple TV+ subscription. And though I’ve never owned any Beanie Babies myself, neither have I ever worn Nike Air Jordans, so there you have it. Going in with an open mind...
There is a line of irony present throughout The Beanie Bubble, as it states right from the beginning that the whole point of this movie is that the billionaire entrepreneur behind Ty Toys was not the "brains" behind anything. Instead those brains belonged to three women, those being the uncredited co-founder of the Ty company Robbie; the Chief Operating Officer Maya who, pardon the pun, was operating on a minimum receptionist wage; and Ty’s wife Sheila, who with her daughters were responsible for the designs of the various stuffed toys. The irony henceforth is that even though the message of the film clearly tries to push Ty out of the picture, nonetheless Ty is primarily the main character of this movie and is very evidently involved with all the development and business side of the Beanie Babies toys. Furthermore the most showy and memorable performance in this film is Zack Galifianakis who absolutely chews up the role, and he plays Ty himself, and as such naturally is outshining everyone else around him. So even though the movie is about pushing forward the female brains behind it all, at the same time you walk out of the movie remembering Ty himself, no matter how much of an a-hole he was. Additionally, there is a moral question behind the movie also, as even though the intention of the film is to show-it-to-the-big-man, the film overall still comes off as a vapid cheerleader for late-stage capitalism.
I feel like The Beanie Bubble would have benefited from going a bit darker, as even though institutional sexism is referred to, overall this is a very fluffy and light experience, and as such the impact is minimal. It’s as if the movie can’t bear (thank you) to simply show the creepy side to these cute plush toys; it emphasises how relatable they are to absolutely any kid - and I’m just there like “where’s the conflict?”. It’s really bland stuff. I also found the non-linear storytelling frustrating in this one, as directors Gore and Kulash hop back and forth between the 1980s (when Ty was dating Robbie) and 1990s (when he was dating Sheila)... back and forth, back and forth. Its annoying and non-sensical, limiting any sort of natural narrative momentum building up, and that when Robbie and Sheila do finally meet, the result is very anti-climactic.
This is a very basic and safe look at the behind the scenes of one of the first internet frenzies, and even though its an easy watch that belongs perfectly on streaming, you won’t remember much of it after the credits roll. After seeing Oppenheimer I was scouring the internet to find out more about what happened to that man and the various rumours of him being a Russian spy. I was truly fascinated with that story - I wanted to learn more. After seeing The Beanie Bubble I simply clicked on the TV remote and moved on with whatever other easily digestible streaming content there was available.
Overall score: 4/10

The Beanie Bubble    [trailer]
Ty Warner was a frustrated toy salesman until his collaboration with three women grew his idea into the biggest toy craze in history.
A fun watch thanks to the crazy story and a game cast. One of those things that seem hard to believe when looking back. Then again, as the movie points out, such bubbles happen on a regular basis. Most recently with the NFT craze.
For the most part the jump between the time lines feels like a distraction. But it pays off towards the end when the threads converge in a for a moment artistic way.
Though you wish that the movie made a stronger point that Warner wronged all these women. They all seem to be doing all right at the end, but compard to the billions he earned they were still seriously short-changed.

The Beanie Bubble Review- A Below Average True Life Story That Bursts It's Own Bubble
This year there has been an overabundance of films based on true stories from the 80s. Air,  Flamin Hot, and Tetris have all done great with viewers and critics alike. The latest film in the vein, also from Apple TV Plus,  is The Beanie Bubble. About a series of little stuffed animals that created a craze for a few years in the 90s, but this story doesn’t start there. Ty Warner (Zach…

The Beanie Bubble (15): Lots of Playthings, Partially Stuffed by Ty Warner.
#onemannsmovies review of "The Beanie Bubble" (2023). #BeanieBubble. Entertaining slice of American commercial historyon #Apple+. 3.5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “The Beanie Bubble” (2023). “The Beanie Bubble” on Apple+ is a very similar movie to the recent “Air“. It follows the fortunes of an American commercial success: the stuffed toy called the Beanie Baby. It’s a really fascinating story, but the structuring of the film makes for a frustrating watch. Bob the Movie Man Rating: Plot Summary: Ty Warner (Zach…
