Thoughts:
The Eyes and the Impossible was, by far, the standout of the month. Told from the point of view of Johannes, a free dog living in an urban park (a thinly veiled Golden Gate Park in San Fransisco), who keeps the other animals in the park updated on the ongoings in the park. Featuring birds, and woodland creatures, and bison, and goats, and humans who change everything.
Dave Eggers wrote one of my all-time favorite books, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, and I have avoided reading any of his subsequent works for fear that they would be disappointing. I took a chance on this one since it's middle grade and quite a departure from his other works, and I'm so glad I did.

Between Tony going "(...) I don't know what happened, but to heal whatever happened (...)" and Tom liking "Wish Gwen would get her head right", I have little hope they did some introspection. It's giving 'I'm sorry you feel this way'. In all those years, they couldn't think of a reason why she'd be hesitant to work with them again?
I still think it's a great move commercially, I'm still happy she gets to do this gig, but I'm thinking of this as a professional thing. I doubt things have been resolved on a personal level.
That same comment starting with "The way if it was with No Doubt y'all would be at the top of that lineup !!! No doubt about it." implies they need Gwen in order to be successful, that they can't be successful without her, which is something these same people try to deny. Eric Keyes always gets so upset when people say G would've been successful without them. He were there from the early days, right? So he probably knows that Tony Ferguson from Interscope already wanted to sign her solo in 1991. The resentment goes wayyy back.
That’s the thing! What took ND so long to break through was that Gwen wouldn’t leave them behind. Also, Gwen loved performing but she wasn’t trying to be famous.
It reminds me of this interview I saw with Dave Grohl where the interviewer said. What do you think you would be doing if you hadn’t joined Nirvana and then started Foo Fighters? Isn’t it scary to think about? And Dave said (I’m paraphrasing), not really. Because before I got famous, I was working at the furniture warehouse in Arlington, Virginia, and I was pretty happy. So, I think I’d be doing something like that and hanging with friends after work, playing in a small band, and I’d still be pretty happy.
I feel like Dave and Gwen are friends because they are similar like that. They both played lots of small gigs for years, got very good, but their focus is on family, and Gwen also would have been happy famous or not famous. Maybe more happy not famous without the GR years. And both Dave and Gwen chose to raise their kids in Encino rather than Bev Hills. You know who wanted the first house Bev Hills… it wasn’t Gwen.
But to wrap up… those weren’t even the worst things the ND guys and their wives liked, said, inferred. And the friends they all follow spoke more freely and give very good insight into how they truly feel. I think Gwen will feel this out and see if it fits where she is in life. I don’t think she’s gonna continue doing anything that doesn’t make her happy at this point in her life.
Sorry for rambling :)

DOCTOR DAVE WOODARD
Three actors portrayed Dr. Dave Woodard on “Dark Shadows”.
Richard Woods: He first appeared in Episode 219 (04/28/1967) to treat Willie Loomis for blood loss. He appeared in one more episode to examine Maggie Evans.
Robert Gerringer: Gerringer replaced Woods in Episode 232 and continued throughout Maggie Evans’ illness; even discovering Barnabas was a vampire. 42 episode total.
Peter Turgeon: When Gerringer refused to cross a picket line during a strike by a union, he was replaced with Turgeon in Episode 335. He continued for 5 more episodes until Woodard’s character was murdered by Dr. Hoffman. Turgeon’s voice was used in 5 more episodes.
I don’t have any particular memory of Richard Woods. But Robert Gerringer was terrific in the role. His departure was jarring and I didn’t care for Turgeon. I wonder if Dr. Woodard’s death was hastened due to the strike.
(NOTE: Producer Dan Curtis feared that shutting down the show during a strike would kill it. He offered to pay the fine of any across who was fined by the union. Nine other actors accepted the offer and continued to work. Gerringer and Daniel Keyes (who played the Caretaker of the Eagle Hill Cenetary) refused and were both replaced.)

Episode 337: Disowned
We open on a set we haven’t seen since #180, the archives of the old cemetery north of town. There, a scene plays out between two actors who aren’t really on the show. Daniel F. Keyes created the role of the Caretaker of the cemetery; Robert Gerringer took over the role of Dr Dave Woodard some months ago and did as much with it as anyone could. But neither of those men was willing to cross a…

Greatest Boxed Set Ever (Prepping for Vol 20)
Sure, I just talked a bunch about the incoming Greatest Songs Ever Vol 20, and I highly encourage you to read the linked blog (I'm kind of proud of myself). This post will be much more esoteric and odd.
That post referenced a fictional collection of CDs named the "Greatest Boxed Set Ever", and this post is that idea taken a step closer to reality. I've already talked about the 2 CDs I made in the early aughts to celebrate my narrow view of our musical world. Using the existing list of Greatest Songs Ever and that same NARROW scope, I've curated a 6-disc boxed set of tracks that, had I continued to make Mixed CDs, would have been volumes 3-6.
It's a weird alternate reality version of my established Greatest Songs Ever, that will lead directly into Vol. 20. I'm sure it sounds confusing, but as I established in that last post, I'm doing this for me, so these are my rules. **shakes fists maniacally at the sky**
Before we can create discs 3-6, we have to establish what tracks were on discs 1 and 2. Finding out what those were, was much harder than I imagined it would be. I somehow lost my copy of the original Greatest Songs Ever disc 1 and most disc drives have a VERY hard time reading 20-year-old burned CDs with heavy printed stickers on them.
I had to enlist the help of the only other person I knew who still had a copy of Disc 1, Lesley Keyes Colwell. With her help and an Xbox 360, the device that could read the discs easiest, I gathered the original tracklists for Discs 1 and 2. Below are the original tracks from what young Sergio (age 17-21) thought were The Greatest Songs Ever.
Tumblr media
Disc 1 - Release Date - 2000-ish
Counterfeit - Limp Bizkit
Bones + Joints - Finger Eleven
Desperately Wanting - Better Than Ezra
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Adam's Song - Blink 182
Is Anybody Home? - Our Lady Peace
Typical Situation - Dave Matthews Band
Machinehead - Bush
Counting Blue Cars - Dishwalla
Papercut - Linkin Park
Everlong - Foo Fighters
When I Come Around - Green Day
Mr. Jones - Counting Crows
Drive - Incubus
Mudshovel - Staind
Save Yourself - Stabbing Westward
Shimmer - Fuel
1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
First things first, I'd stand behind every one of these songs. Choosing Limp Bizkit as track #1 is much more trollish than intended, but I love all this music, so no complaints here.
Tumblr media
Disc 2 - Release Date - 2004-ish
I Believe in a Thing Called Love - The Darkness
A Certain Shade of Green - Incubus
Next to Nothing - Breaking Benjamin
The Best Deceptions - Dashboard Confessional
Bellevue - Fingertight
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses
You Oughta Know - Alanis Morissette
The Anthem - Good Charlotte
Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Iris - Goo Goo Dolls
Far Behind - Candlebox
Run-Around - Blues Traveler
Interstate Love Song - Stone Temple Pilots
Wait and Bleed - Slipknot
Rain - Audiovent
Scars - Papa Roach
4 A.M. - Our Lady Peace
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day
Again, no regrets about any of these. Actually, a couple of them (Fingertight and Audiovent) are hyper-deep-cuts that deserve any and all attention they can get. There's a reason these CDs stayed in my Truck's rotation.
Here's where it gets weird. Discs 3-6 were never actually created. So, I've combed through my existing list and carefully curated 4 more discs that could fill out the rest of the box set. I gave myself a few parameters to work within. The songs had to be in the genres I listened to during my youth and be released within my lifetime (basically 1983-current). Each disc is given a release date based on the disc's contents to create a faux release cadence similar to a "NOW" collection. The songs can't have been released after the artificial release dates. This will make the songs on the discs progressively get newer as we venture through them.
This may make more sense once I start listing discs, if not, I promise it makes sense in my brain. Also, each CD cannot exceed 80 minutes because that's the length of a standard CDR format disc. With that out of the way, here are discs 3-6. I even threw together some fake disc art. I can't believe I found that weird-ass font again.
Tumblr media
Disc 3 - Release Date - 2005-ish
Sugar, We're Going Down - Fall Out Boy
Time Ago - Black Lab
High Voltage - Linkin Park
Weight of the World - Saliva
Killing in the Name Of - Rage Against the Machine
At the Stars - Better Than Ezra
My Happy Ending - Avril Lavigne
Crush - Dave Matthews Band
Wonderwall - Oasis
Downfall - TrustCompany
Daughters - John Mayer
The Beautiful People - Marilyn Manson
The Dolphin's Cry - Live
No One - Cold
Brian Wilson - Barenaked Ladies
Hey Man, Nice Shot - Filter
Tribute - Tenacious D
I'll Be - Edwin McCain
Okay, here's the first disc where I see some cracks. That TrustCompany song might have been crowned prematurely, and both the Saliva and Live tracks probably should have been rethought, but overall, it's still a strong list.
Tumblr media
Disc 4 - Release Date - 2006-ish
Man in the Box - Alice in Chains
All Downhill From Here - New Found Glory
Harder to Breathe - Maroon 5
Pressure - Skindred
Only Happens When It Rains - Garbage
Joan - Butch Walker
Kickstart My Heart - Motley Crue
Makedamnsure - Taking Back Sunday
Stop This Train - John Mayer
Complicated Questions - Finger Eleven
My Own Summer - Deftones
Fade to Black - Metallica
The Sharpest Lives - My Chemical Romance
Dreams - The Cranberries
Bright Lights - Matchbox Twenty
I Remember You - Skid Row
Mr. Brightside - The Killers
More Than Love - Los Lonely Boys
Live Forever - Oasis
Disc 4 is solid and includes an unprecedented 19 tracks. The only hole is the Los Lonely Boys song. Not that it's a bad song, it's fine, and might even deserve its spot, but the initial reason for its inclusion is super-dubious. That doesn't matter because once a song is enshrined, it CANNOT be un-enshrined.
Tumblr media
Disc 5 - Release Date - 2013-ish
My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark - Fall Out Boy
Volcano Girls - Veruca Salt
Synthesizers - Butch Walker
Her Words Destroyed My Planet - Motion City Soundtrack
Gravemakers & Gunslingers - Coheed & Cambria
Everybody Talks - Neon Trees
Innocence - Halestorm
CrushCrushCrush - Paramore
Tears Don't Fall - Bullet For My Valentine
Thinking of You - Katy Perry
Car Radio - Twenty One Pilots
Open Your Eyes - Guano Apes
Little Black Submarines - The Black Keys
Watch Over You - Alter Bridge
Friday I'm in Love - The Cure
Weatherman - Dead Sara
Second Chance - Shinedown
So What If You Go - Adelitas Way
Kiss From a Rose - Seal
Just like the canonical blog posts, there's quite a date gap between Disc 4 and Disc 5, but that's fine. This is the first disc representing more modern songs, so there aren't really any regrets here (at least not yet). The closest is that Adelitas Way song, but then I listen to it and I totally agree with 2013 Sergio.
Tumblr media
Disc 6 - Release Date - 20...um...23?
Shut Up and Dance - Walk the Moon
I Think I'm OKAY - Machine Gun Kelly Feat. Yungblud & Travis Barker
Here To Mars - Coheed & Cambria
New Horizons - Flyleaf
Roman Holiday - Halsey
Drown - Bring Me the Horizon
How About You - Staind
The Jester - Badflower
Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheeran
Dreams - Van Halen

Oh no, where are the last 10 of Disc 6? Good question, it's the theme of Vol 20! That's right, I have built all these fictitious discs with the sole purpose of justifying the theme of Vol 20. Do you feel dumb yet? I hope not, I put a lot of work into this weird fever dream, so try to enjoy yourself.
Since these discs are basically full of rock tracks that I would have chosen had this project continued as a Mixed CD adventure, Vol 20 continues that idea. 10 new Greatest Songs Ever in the vein of the original aughts-era disc releases. Yeah, I get that I'm the only person this appeals to, and I get that anyone just now familiarizing themselves with my list will think I'm insane, but let me throw this out there. If you've made it this far and you're still reading ... you either understand the nature of this project and "get it" or you deserve to be confused.
With all of this "on wax," the next step is finally typing out the post for Vol. 20. It'll be out soon, I promise. Until then, please enjoy the ongoing Youtube playlist that is, THE GREATEST SONGS EVER!

One does have to wonder if those at the top feel any guilt about the gun violence? There was a 171% increase in mass shootings between 2020 and 2021. The NRA spent about $15 mil last year on lobbying vs. about $2mil from the anti- gun people. And what was up with the response in Texas?? Clearly the police think more about themselves than the children they were supposed to protect. The set up with the press after with nearly all white men was pretty hard to take. I sort of hated Beta for the political move but it is time for action and respect there!! Hooray for the students all over this land who walked out in protest!! More of that!!

knightley dump from forever ago also i need to share my stupid headcanons here
some of these pictures are from 2020 jesus christ. spoilers for AAI2 below.
as seen in one of the images above, horace knightley was 15 years old in 2010. ‘act 5′ of homestuck began in 2010. this is the ‘part’ of homestuck which is most well known as it is the introduction of the ‘troll’ characters. i believe that knightley, as a teenager in 2010 was a fan of homestuck due to its emerging popularity on tumblr.com. there are two important points:
1. he was fictionkin of dave strider: there are multiple reasons. they’re both knight themed, they want to protect the people they like (this is me trying to believe knightley genuinely cares about keyes), “he trauma is there but they don’t cope with it or go to therapy, and they have a fucked up relationship with their ‘dads’
2. he cosplayed gamkar with keyes: i don’t ship gamkar but keyes is a clown and knightley has karkat vibes too. actually i drew fanart of them dressed as homestuck trolls but i would rather not have that stain my tumblr blog.
i think that manosouta’s relationship is best represented through homestuck troll quadrants. they were morails back when people called each other that. keyes always thought it was cringe and knightley only realized it was cringe later (but he still thinks of him that way). keyes clearly experiences kismesissitude towards knightley but he refuses to call it that.
(SIDE NOTE: “nahyuta represents antis guy” was an anonymous user on phoenix wright kink meme (?) who wrote like two paragraphs on how nahyuta’s righteous personality represented him being an anti in fandom. girl what are you on about)
anyway after knightley’s tumblr/homestuck era he started using 4chan and hating on fictionkinnies for fun also he’s an anti-sjw at this point despite being bisexual. i don’t really want to talk about this time you know how it is.
then he became normal and stopped using every social media except facebook (he harasses people with those ‘want to play a game with me?’ messages with facebook chess or something) and reddit i also don’t want to talk about this.
he started watching bojack horseman in 2015 and kept up with the series until his death in 2019. he doesn’t call himself a kinnie but he’s definitely one of those people who project way too strongly onto bojack. this time, my reasoning is that he’s horse themed, a really big shithead, gets jealous of others easily, and hates french people like bojack hates horses.
that last point is another headcanon; after receiving the PH ring, he believed his father was french (because he didn’t find out about pierre hoquet being isaac dover). knightley has very faint memories compared to keyes, but i think he’d still remember how badly his father treated him, leading to his hatred of the french.
also, he has a pet dobermann! that pic was from a tosaka trio fanart i never finished... atmey has a borzoi and wellington has a pomeranian heheh.
one of these days i’ll get around to making my knightley fangame which is about playing as blackquill convincing him to go to therapy. sorry half of my headcanons are homestuck related btw.

NOIR CITY 19 wraps up today at Oakland's Grand Lake Theatre with ON DANGEROUS GROUND (1:00), THE PROWLER (3:00), ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW (7:00) and FORCE OF EVIL (9:00). All films introduced by Eddie Muller.
Sunday Matinée • March 27
ON DANGEROUS GROUND1:00 PM
Big-city cop Jim Wilson (Robert Ryan), embittered by his job, has become a ticking time bomb. Aware that Wilson's unhinged brutality is a lawsuit waiting to happen, his boss sends him to a snowy upstate town to cool off. There, Wilson meets Mary Malden (Ida Lupino), a sage blind woman who sees through his cynicism and vitriol. But before she can melt his defenses, a young girl is found murdered, and Wilson throws himself into the vengeful manhunt for the killer. Ryan and Lupino give powerhouse performances in this unusually structured film, ingeniously and aggressively directed by Nicholas Ray. Half of it takes place in the nocturnal city, the other half in blinding white snowscapes; notions of natural and human duality abound. Featuring brilliant cinematography by George Diskant and one of Bernard Herrmann's most distinctive scores, which plays up the film's themes through an astounding juxtaposition of propulsive brass and wistful strings.
1952, RKO [Warner Bros.] 82 minutes. Screenplay by A. I. Bezzerides, based on the novel Made with Much Heart by Gerald Butler. Produced by John Houseman. Directed by Nicholas Ray.
Tumblr media
THE PROWLER 3:00 PM
Patrolman Webb Garwood is more interested in achieving the American Dream than he is protecting it for others. After answering a woman's distress call about a peeping tom, Garwood hatches a nefarious plot to worm his way into her affluent but lonely life — and into her husband's life insurance policy. Van Heflin and Evelyn Keyes give stellar performances in this disturbing spider-and-fly romance, written covertly by legendary blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and directed by the soon-to-be-blacklisted Joseph Losey. Largely dismissed by critics upon its release, it's now regarded as Losey's best American film, one that offers a compelling warning about small-minded people's willingness to abuse power for selfish gain. Restored in 2007 by the Film Noir Foundation and UCLA Film & Television Archive, the first triumph in a long-running partnership.
1951, Horizon Pictures/United Artists [FNF/UCLA Film & Television Archive]. 92 minutes. Screenplay by Dalton Trumbo (fronted by Hugo Butler) . Based on a story by Robert Thoeren and Hans Wilhelm. Produced by John Huston and Sam Spiegel (as S.P. Eagle). Directed by Joseph Losey.Sunday Evening •
ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW 7:00 PM
Tumblr media
Disgraced ex-cop Dave Burke (Ed Begley) masterminds a piece-of-cake bank robbery in upstate New York, but to pull it off he requires the cooperation of two dangerously mismatched cohorts: hot-headed redneck war veteran Earle Slater (Robert Ryan) and gambling addict jazzman Johnny Ingram (Harry Belafonte); their racist antagonism threatens to thwart a seemingly fool-proof plan. Silent producer Belafonte hired blacklisted screenwriter Abraham Polonsky to adapt William P. McGivern's novel, specifically to subvert the sanctimony of The Defiant Ones (1958), a "feel good" movie about racism. Robert Wise's direction is as fresh and expressive as anything being done by the French New Wave of the period, and the score by John Lewis's Modern Jazz Quartet is innovative and exhilarating. With vivid supporting performances by Shelley Winters, Kim Hamilton, and Gloria Grahame. An all-time classic heist thriller—and much more.

FORCE OF EVIL 9:00 PM
One of the most distinctive works of the noir era, Abraham Polonsky's directorial debut is an exposé of the New York numbers racket and a riveting tale of a fallen man's attempt to reclaim his soul (John Garfield, in one of his best roles). Unfortunately for Polonsky, the House Committee on Un-American Activities also felt the film was a thinly veiled attack on the nation's capitalist system, suggesting parallels between the operations of businessmen and gangsters. Polonsky was blacklisted, unable to put his name on any work he produced over the next twenty years. Force of Evil is innovative and superlative in every respect; its stylized art direction complementing vivid New York location footage. With an evocative score by David Raksin and memorable performances by Thomas Gomez, Beatrice Pearson, Marie Windsor, and Roy Roberts.
1948, MGM [Park Circus]. 78 minutes. Screenplay by Abraham Polonsky and Ira Wolfert, from Wolfert's novel Tucker's People. Produced by Bob Roberts. Directed by Abraham Polonsky.
