FEBRUARY DWC 2024 DAY 7 - DISCOVERY
Tumblr media
It had taken Xylaes a long time to even want to test out what kind of magic his replanted arm was capable of. Much of the time he had kept it covered and away from his own sight lest memories of that entire experience within the House of Constructs in Maldraxxus be dredged up. Not to mention the revulsion he felt by having some stranger’s arm in the place of where his own should be. But it had proven to be useful in dire moments, and there were surely plenty of new discoveries to come.
One of the more recent revelations had occurred when he least expected it. His son Garren had invited him to his home in Bel’ameth during the Lunar Festival, and despite feeling strange about being in the new Kaldorei capital city for a variety of reasons, he wasn’t going to say no. Their relationship had been rocky enough, Xylaes would do everything asked of him to fix what he had broken in the first place.
Their conversation was brief, but at least somewhat productive as loose future plans were made to spend more time together. Bel’ameth had clearly been healing for the young man; he had deserved it after everything he went through, and seeing him happier made Xylaes happier. They departed with a slightly awkward hug, and Xylaes strayed away from the main festivities to leave him be, taking some time to explore the surrounding lands on his own. His wandering led him to a body of water that had a small waterfall cascading down over some carved rocks. As he stood there admiring the beauty, a feminine voice spoke up behind him.
“Lovely, isn’t it?” He turns to look at the Kaldorei woman addressing him: Tall, long, blue hair, flawless skin. She didn’t seem to be upset by his presence there and instead offered a warm, welcoming smile.
“It truly is, I’m very happy to be able to see it.”
It was then he felt a strange, yet somewhat familiar tingling behind both eyes. It wasn’t an uncomfortable feeling, but something he couldn’t quite place until the glamours covering the woman’s skin suddenly vanished to reveal burn scars covering about 50% of the flesh he could see. Her friendly disposition never once wavered, suggesting to him that those glamours were still in place; he could just see through them now. He tried not to physically react in any way, even though he had to assume that these burn scars came from Teldrassil; similar to those on his son.
“And we are blessed to have it. I’ll leave you to your thoughts. Ande'thoras-ethil.”
He bowed his head politely as she continued her trek towards the Festival. He watched her curiously until she was out of sight, brow furrowing in confusion. Up until this point the replanted arm had only provided magic contained to the arm itself, and surely she hadn’t dropped her illusion just for him. It was difficult not to jump to immediate conclusions, but this was a step in a very exciting direction. Pollux would definitely be his first stop on the way home.

November Daily Writing Challenge Day 6 - Home
Tumblr media
Garren set his suitcase down on the twin bed before scanning the small room: A table with a single chair, a nightstand by the bed with a lamp, a wash basin with a mirror, and some scattered shelving here and there. The bathroom and the kitchen would be a shared space with everyone else on the floor; most of which were young military so at least they were clean and courteous. It wasn’t much, but this was now home.
After spending about a week staying in a spare room of Lady Tel’vaiel’s tower in Dalaran, Xylaes had managed to secure him his own space in the city. It was an extreme downgrade from his previous quarters, Garren had never seen such lavishness in his entire life during his week in the tower. He was afraid to touch anything, assuming it to probably cost way more than anything he had ever owned. He didn’t realize sheets and towels could be so soft, finding any reason to take a bath in the massive clawfoot tub or sleep in for as long as he could manage. It was like being on vacation, but ten times better than any vacation he had ever gone on in the past.
When not enjoying the luxurious sheets, he spent the nights wandering the common rooms to look at all the intricate artwork and fancy decorations on display. He would be less likely to run into anyone else in the middle of the night, feeling awkward enough being put up in a place like this with little notice. He probably should have told his father sooner that he was leaving Moonglade, but he also expected that he would be staying with Xylaes himself. Of course the moment he stepped foot into The Red Moon, he realized exactly what the place was. He would play dumb and pretend he didn’t, for now; no one wanted to have that awkward conversation, him especially.
At least his hostesses had been most gracious despite his unexpected appearance. Pyraelia had even offered to give him a tour around Dalaran since he had never been before. He declined, assuming she had only made the offer to be polite. Being a burden was something he tried to avoid doing ever since Teldrassil was destroyed. It was always easier to keep his head down even if it meant his needs went unmet. That, and it was all just much too overwhelming: This was a massive change for him and he was terrified. Best to keep a low profile for now.
It was a relief to finally leave his temporary housing, this tiny space was much more his speed. He flipped open his suitcase and removed a few framed pictures to set out on his nightstand. The first was of him and his grandparents, taken just a week before they perished in the fires in Darnassus. The second was of him and his mother, Callia, when he was only a baby. He had her eyes and her hair, but he definitely took after his father more.
The third and final picture was of him and Xylaes, the same picture that Callia also had in Maldraxxus. He so desperately wished he could have gone to the Shadowlands to visit her, and now it was too late. But it was her wish for him and his father to reunite and to be a family as they always should have been. He was trying; that’s why he came here in the first place, but it had proven to be a difficult road thus far. Lips sank into a small frown as he studied the picture before shutting it inside the nightstand drawer. He wasn’t quite ready for that one to be on display just yet.

Daily Writing Challenge: Day 7 - Peace
[This lore is a little bit of surprise for the wonderful @mekandawn ❤️]
Tumblr media
Time is strange in the Shadowlands, it's hard to keep track. Only my iComm keeps me abreast of the time and date on Azeroth.
A time of celebration approaches!
Tumblr media
Connections are everything in the Shadowlands, especially as a diplomat. Luckily, despite a small fumble earlier in the year, Anzhin was in rather good standings with the Maldraxxi diplomatic representatives. In moments of growing peace, this granted him a rather interesting advantage.
It wasn't long before he found himself standing beside Plague Deviser Marileth, smiling up at the masked Maldraxxi.
"Ah! You must be my new apprentice!" Marileth began. "Yes, yes, I was told about you! You wish to create with me, I heard! A friendly slime to bring to home, yes?" He inquired, stepping over to a bone-lined stone desk, flipping through scattered papers scrawled with recipes and directions. "I assume you wouldn't want one filled with the plague, as the results could be rather catastrophic for us both!" He says with a hearty laugh.
"That would be correct, Plague Devisor." Anzhin agreed, the formal mantle of diplomat not easily sliding away, even as this little side task of his was for a personal matter.
"Well, luckily for you, I have a list of viable and non-threatening reagents for a mortal like you! Er, somewhere." Marileth said with a quick, determined hum as bone-tipped fingers carefully claw through the paperwork. "Plague? No. Abomination instructions? No. Stitcher blueprints? No."
The Bard waited patiently, stepping forward as if ready to offer his help, yet with the nature of Necrolord work in the House of Plagues, he was unsure if he should be so close to the Deviser's desk. An artist's mess is one you never fool around with, and the Maldraxxi was one in his own right.
"Ah! Here we are! One blueprint for a friendly slime cat!" Marileth said with a delighted laugh. "You're going to need many reagents, as my stores have been rather low as of late." He says with a low hum of contemplation. "Do be swift, my apprentice!"
Anzhin took the blueprint with its accompanying recipe. The scrawl was a bit difficult to read at times, but he had definitely seen worse. "I will return to you soon, Plague Deviser." He said, flourishing into a little bow before whistling for his steed.
Almost every part of the known Shadowlands had a piece in the recipe. The bones of Ardenweald's prowlers, Gargon dust of Revendreth, shed Larion fur of Bastion, and slime and anima of Maldraxxus. While the reagents were not terribly difficult to locate, much had to be done to actually procure them. It took quite a bit more time than he had planned, but for love, he would do just about anything.
Anzhin looked rather ragged as he finally returned to the Plague Deviser, yet a smile still remained.
"Ah, my apprentice returns! Triumphant, I presume?" Marileth asked, stepping forward as he was ready to take the assumed gathered reagents. Anzhin wasted no time handing them over, following after as the Maldraxxi walked over to his cauldron.
Surprisingly, the Plague Deviser and the Night Fae Diplomat worked rather well together. Like clockwork, Anzhin was on top of every request, fetching reagents mere moments after the names were spoken. Even as they worked so fluidly, the Bard asked many questions, curious about possible additions and reactions. They actually wound up adding a few of the interesting suggestions once Marileth believed they would be harmless to the final product.
It was a time-consuming ordeal, but it was actually fun! Perhaps this was similar to one of the many experiences Caythaes had remembered when they spoke so fondly of the flesh-bound plane.
He hoped they would like this.
With a puff of peach cobbler-scented noxious fumes, a small, burbling meow echoed from the cauldron. A moment or so later, a sunrise-colored slime kitten leaped out and landed beside Anzhin and Marileth, looking to the pair with a bright Maldraxxi green eye glow.
Anzhin looked to the Plague Deviser, seemingly asking for permission.
"Go ahead, apprentice! Coddle your creation!" Marileth encourages with a nod. "Every slime deserves a little praise now and again!" He looks over to his own large slime companion, noticing the little crown half-sunken into the jelly of his body. "Oh, Kevin, that is a wonderful hat! Good for you!"
The Bard leaned down and opened his arms for the kitten. They seemed... hesitant at first, touching their little jelly nose to his hand before stepping closer and climbing up onto one of his arms. It wasn't long until he hugged the small kitten to him, smilingly warmly. "You are perfect." He murmured softly. "They're going to love you."
With a friendly little slime kitten at his side, Anzhin said his goodbyes to Marileth with promises of speaking to the Maldraxxi diplomat in reference to procuring more reagents for him. Then, it was time to prepare; it was almost time!
Tumblr media
I stand before the door to Cay's apartment, holding the box tight in my arms, feeling the sweet little beast inside shift for comfort. I wonder if it can feel my pounding heart through the cardboard... I take a breath to steady myself, try to bring some semblance of calm even as an excited smile settles on my face. My hand raises to knock upon the door, gentle but still firm enough to be heard.
I can't contain the joy as the door opens.
"Happy Birthday, my Darling Firebird~"

No. 8 - COUGHING UP A LUNG
pneumothorax | exotic illness | “Definitely just a cold”
A week ago it was a mild cough. Just a couple dry coughs at a time at most.
"It's definitely just a cold." Galathia had reassured him.
She had declined steadily over the past few days. Someone from the House of Plagues had set up a quarantine room for her, and now Darion sat in there with her, taking care of his lover.
He had propped her up on a pile of pillows, front down. She hadn't been able to breath at all while on her back, and this wasn't as good as standing bent over had been, but she was so tired. Her hair was plastered to her skin, and drenched in sweat. Darion had already changed the sheets and pillow cases a couple of times from them getting soaked through.
"Papa's going to be mad at me..." She croaked. "I wasn't supposed to get sick. People in the House of Plagues don't get sick, they study the-" Another coughing fit cut her off. Darion rubbed her back, bringing the blanket on her back up higher as she shivered.
"Tell him I'm sorry. Please tell him." Galathia asked.
Darion nodded. "I will. I'll tell him."
She nodded weakly, then fell back asleep. There was a tap at the window. Darion walked over to it, seeing Marileth and another medic.
"Galathia wants you to know she's sorry about getting sick." Darion said.
Marileth scoffed, waving a hand. "It happens to the best of us! Why, I don't think I've ever had an apprentice that lasted this long before getting sick! She should be proud of herself really." He went quiet. "But she should be focusing on getting better..."
Darion turned to look at the medic. "Any ideas on how to help that?"
The medic shrugged. "We don't know what she got. It honestly could have been literally anything we had been working on, everything's gotten loose, there's no labels on anything. Maw, if we're really unlucky she managed to get a couple of different diseases at once. Also, why aren't you wearing a mask?"
Darion blinked. "I'm in quarantine with her, I'm her caretaker."
"That doesn't mean you shouldn't wear a mask! You won't be any use to our Baroness if you get sick too!"
Darion gave the medic a deadpan look. "I'm dead. I can't get sick."
The medic returned an absolutely withering glare. "We are in the afterlife. Everyone here is dead."
Darion put on a mask.
"I think the medicine that is already in there should work as well as anything we have out here. There's some breathing masks in that cabinet there, and a couple capsules that you should break just under her nose and have her breathe in. At the very least, it's not likely to hurt the situation..."
A gasp and more coughing from behind him told Darion that Galathia was awake again. She hadn't been able to sleep for more than a few minutes at a time all day. The death knight waved at the window as he turned around and went back to his love.
He brought a small cup of water over, waiting for her to catch her breath as she gulped air in shuddering gasps. "How are you feeling?" He whispered.
The warlock winced. "Tired. Wrung out like a wet rag." She said hoarsly.
Darion holds the cup up to her lips. "Here, drink some water. It'll help."
He slowly tilts it to not drown her as she drinks, but she drinks faster than he expected her too.
"Are you hungry?"
A weak shake of the head. Not good, given how much her body was doing. He took a folded towel from the bowl of water and wiped her forehead and the back of her neck and shoulders with it, removing the hot and salty sweat with cool clean water.
A couple strokes on the top of her head, and he stepped away to grab one of the capsules the medic mentioned, when Darion heard a sudden pained gasp from the bed. He whipped around and ran to Galathia.
"What's wrong?"
Her skin had gone grey, and she was breathing quickly and shallowly. "Don't know. Hurts. Side. Left side. Sharp." It seemed like all she could do was focus on trying to breathe.
Darion looked around frantically. He had no idea what to do for this. He had never been a healer, only a fighter. He might have been able to heal some minor wounds with the Light, but it had been a long time since he was alive enough for that. He couldn't find anything in the quarantine room to help, or even if anything here could help her he wouldn't know how to use it.
He glanced back at Galathia. Then ran to the window next to the door, and pounded on it with his fist. "Emergency! Something has gone wrong, very fast, someone who knows diseases get in here!!" The Highlord bellowed through the glass.
Darion Mograine let himself be shoved into a corner as a pair of medics in bulky safety gear barged into the room and went straight to Galathia. He watched helplessly as they worked. He had no idea which had to be more terrifying, being Galathia and unable to breath, in pain, and surrounded by strangers doing strange things to her; or to be him, watching her go through all of this and unable to do a thing for her. Big scary Horseman of the Ebon Blade and he can't do anything.
He hated it.

I see you loving Maldraxxus, and honestly I want to too. Loving the plague doctor masks, the pet slimes. But then I'll have to do something like hop across lava, or avoid getting smacked in the face by a bunch of books, or lasers, or laser books, and then Maldraxxus wears out its charm for me. :( I'm glad you are enjoying it in my stead.
gonna be honest i loved all those quests too! WoW’s never fully taken itself seriously, but that these Stalwart Defenders of the Shadowlands have trials like. Hopping across lava? so charming.
(also my immediate reaction to that specific quest was “how best to cheese this?” initially considered a goblin glider, ended up going for that outcropping of rock on the left; you can leap nearly all the way to it with a speed boost-can you mount in there? idr-and then hang for a sec and make another big jump almost all the way to The Rock. minimal burning!)
for sure the plague doctors creating plague, and their pet slimes, and the themes for all the houses really are super cool and i love the visual aesthetic of ALL of it, it is right up my alley and EXACTLY what i wanted from the zone since its announcement last year. but also. the sidenotes of pure chaos and/or stupidity of books/lasers/book lasers? is just *chef’s kiss* not to mention the introduction quest to the zone where they throw you in a pit and tell you to try not to die, and you get a buff called smth like “Rising Through the Ranks” and get cheered at every time you kill an elite and are gifted special abilites like this is the Hunger Games really, at least for me, perfectly set the tone of how the rest of the zone was gonna be.
i guess my point is, the maldraxxi are big tough guys... that wanna be cool. they want to be popular, and STRONG, and to be looked up to, and KICK YOUR ASS. theyre like a popularity contest but with a side of *spongebob voice* How tough am I?! and yknow what. on my dk i am so tough guys check this out! *throws a dragon that breathes ice, killing everything in its path*

Really messy shadowlands AU bkdk. Midoriya becomes a kyrian and loses all memories of his past life. Bakugo goes to Maldraxxus and seems to recognize one of the kyrian that he has rescued from being butchered.
I am definitely the only one this AU appeals to, but whatever.

Daily Writing Challenge 2021 Day 6 - Festival
Warning: Wound description
Aerden had been thankful for the invitation from Pyraelia to the Harvest Festival, he needed the distraction from his own thoughts and this presented the perfect opportunity. After having spent so many months in Maldraxxus and then in The Maw, he had nearly forgotten that youthful spirit he was known for.
Every deployment took little pieces of him away and it often took weeks, maybe even months, to fill those empty spaces upon his return home. He knew that it was probably obvious to Pyra, there were moments when he would stare off into the distance and go quiet, or he would be so lost in his head that he completely missed what she had just said to him. There were a handful of times that he apologized for it, but it obviously never upset her.
They ate too much, they drank too much, he pet every single animal he could in the petting zoo, and he even won a few little prizes from the game booths - most of which he gifted to Pyra. Slowly he found himself dwelling less and less about the months prior. Keeping occupied and active was definitely the key, and for a moment he did consider asking to come over to her place later. But that thought was quickly pushed aside, he wasn’t quite ready to talk about his experiences in The Maw just yet and no doubt some questions would have come up.
He arrived back home at his small apartment in Silvermoon late at night; exhausted, full, a little tipsy, and definitely sore. The doctors had cautioned him to take it easy until the healing process was fully complete, and he had for the most part. More than he usually would, at least.
Shuffling into the bathroom, he bent forward to pull his shirt over his head and dump it in the nearby hamper. A hand pressed against the bandages on his left side as he looked himself over in the mirror. It had wept through just a little, nothing to be too worried over. He gently pulled the bandage away, tossing it into the waste bin before allowing the healing green mists to seep into the darkened flesh beneath.
It looked much better than it had a week ago. The necrosis had stopped and now it was just a matter of trying to reverse the damage done. Thankfully there had been very little internal deterioration since he caught it soon enough, but the large wound had proven to be a nuisance to heal. The main bulk of it was nearly black in color and roughly the size of his hand, with lighter tendrils fanning and curling out in all directions. Not a type of injury seen very often, so he wasn’t certain what to expect during the healing process, or if it would leave a scar. His doctor wasn’t certain either, and for that reason kept a very close eye on it. Aerden would probably find it ‘cool’ if it wasn’t on his own person, but right now it was just kind of gross and no one else needed to see it.
After applying the balm he had been given, he covered the wound up with a fresh bandage and retired to his bed. Thankfully, sleep came quickly. Tomorrow he would have to find some other sort of distraction.

Because now it’s in my head-
Bastion’s coffee is generally considered to be okay, like it’s good, it’s just not amazing. Where they really shine is in their pastries and sandwiches. Best pastries and gourmet sandwiches in town, and no one will dispute this. They also roast their own coffee and Mikanakos loves making really elaborate coffee machines that rotate out at least once a month.
Meanwhile, everyone says that people who go to Maldraxxus  don’t like coffee, they like caffeine. The coffee tastes bad, like gas station bad, but if you have an essay that’s due in the morning, Maldraxxus coffee will last until you hand that baby in. They also have the widest array of mix-ins out of any shop, so if you’re the kind of person who loves the Starbucks Secret Menu, their baristas love a challenge.
Ardenweald isn’t really known for its coffee, but for their wide selection of herbal teas (only SOME of them contain cannabis). The shop also has the coziest, chilliest atmosphere with tons of comfortable seating and live music playing. Saturdays and Sundays, they host an Open Mic night and a little craft market full of local artists.
If you want the really good, high end coffee, you go to Revendreth. It’s a gourmet coffee and tea shop that converts to a wine bar after sunset, and all the goths and coffee snobs hang out there. People say that Theotar doesn’t work there, he just lives there and he sleeps on the leather couches because he never does anything other host tea parties and sometimes all he wears is a fancy dressing gown that exposes as much of his chest as possible. They have food service, much like Bastion, but a lot of people think it’s overpriced and the pastries are definitely mass produced.
The Maw is a coffee franchise (like Dunkins) that’s trying to pit the local coffee shops against one another so that they destroy each other. Then The Maw swoops in and takes over, putting subpar coffee and donut shops on every corner.

Favourite Shadowlands NPCs?
almost all of them
this is definitely a difficult question to answer; i have so many favourites! i'll list the ones that i think i've spent more time thinking about but there's a lot of others (especially from bastion and revendreth) that i'll be leaving out 😔
In order from favourite to least favourite:
1: The Curator the curator lives rent-free in my brain at all times. i love her so much. sometimes when i'm trying to draw something completely unrelated it just turns into her. i think i'm cursed ngl. but it's a welcome curse. i just think she's very precious, the way she talks, her personality and her story. i hope blizzard gives her a happy ending although they seem to be making her memory even worse and that's making me v sad
2: Devos before i even met the curator or played shadowlands in general, i was in love with this woman. at one point she was all i drew for about two months or so because i loved the story that they SEEMED to have set up for her. you can imagine my disappointment when i played the kyrian campaign. i loved her unique design too; her strong facial features is a beautiful rarity when it comes to character design as you usually only encounter little button noses, round jawlines and other things people would consider the average and generic beauty standard. but i really loved this about her, and it makes her even more beautiful imho
3: The Winter Queen i absolutely ADORE the winter queen from the first moment i saw her. her design piqued my interest because i've always loved interesting fae designs where they don't just look like little princesses like wings. her flower petal crest and antlers immediately made me want to draw her (but alas, she is very difficult to draw which is why i don't more often). i also loved her personality and voice actor. seeing her actually feel pain after what happened to ara'lon in the final chapter of the fae covenant just made her feel more real than some of the shadowlands characters coughcoughkyrestiacoughcough
4: Plague Deviser Marileth so when i saw the afterlives shorts i was 100% convinced i would never want to join maldraxxus. i do like necromancers and their lore, i'm very soft for draka and her story, and i loved aka'rek and krexus' designs, but i felt like it just... wouldn't be for me. and then as soon as i entered the zone, there was vole and krexus and... everything. i was starting to change my mind. and then i met marileth and suddenly i fell in love with the necrolord covenant and was really considering just flinging all my characters there. i just loved marileth so much, he completely charmed me. whenever i do an ember court i can't not invite him and vole. i just can't. i want him to be happy and to recover from his loss of his margrave and friends ):
5: Grandmaster Vole i have to include uncle vole. i was smitten when i met him in the intro the maldraxxus. he has such an explosive yet somehow cute personality. and when you get best friends with him in ember court it's even better. what a bro. i just love how casual and explosive he is at the same time. how he cares a lot about the maw-walker evidently and how he tries to start a fight club and wanders the court with 1 HP. what a madlad. i just love him very much and he deserved a spot here
Honourable Mentions: (because i couldn't not include some of my other favourites) renathal, accuser, theotar, denathrius, vorpalia, remornia; moonberry, marasmius, thiernax & qadarin, herne, ara'lon; thenios, chyrus, xandria, pelagos, apolon & kynthia, eridia; the primus, buttons & MRAAAZ, kevin, heirmir
i'd include more but we could be here all day

November DWC Day 3 - Unresolved
Tumblr media
This was quite possibly the best that Xylaes had felt about himself in a long time. Yes, the situation within the Emerald Dream was rather dire, his relationship with Garren was rocky at best, and there was a lot of unresolved conflict with Fiorenze, but dammit he felt useful again. After so many losses, it was definitely a win in his book!
He had already spent a handful of years as a part of Talonoa’s mercenary crew, but had never really found his niche with them until this particular campaign. The Shadowlands was a hot mess, everyone could agree on that, even if all of that had led to him finally reuniting with his son, Garren, and having more time with his late wife, Callia. However when it came to the mercenary work, at that time he was considered untrustworthy and unreliable thanks to excursion alone into Maldraxxus. The heart wanted what the heart wanted, and he would have likely made the same choice today even with everything he knew that would happen. Getting captured by the House of Constructs and having an arm replantation had been worth it in the end; at least that’s what he told himself. The trauma it caused is another story, but that is neither here nor there.
He had finally worked himself into Talon’s good graces, and the retired Argent actually saw his potential and willingness to be challenged. Xylaes was given more missions, more scouting, especially in some of the more dangerous areas because he could handle it. This is what he was accustomed to, and what he had trained for during his days in the military. This was absolutely where he belonged, not working in some brothel and slowly wasting away between the legs of the rich who wanted to have a go with a ‘hardened criminal’ because it felt taboo. Fieldwork had always felt like more of a home to him than any actual living space ever had.
Plus, he had his son here with him. He had never seen Garren this focused before, but he knew why. Everyone knew what this meant to all of the Kaldorei, and Xy would do everything in his power to ensure Amirdrassil would have safe passage into the real world.
He had been away from the main encampment for about a day now, returning early in the morning to deliver his report to Talonoa before retiring to his tent. There was a small box waiting for him, with a note that read ‘Enjoy!’. This was Fio’s handwriting, and within the box was a rainbow chip cupcake - his favorite. Huh. Maybe she had gone to Fancy Cakes the other night and left this for him like she used to. He smiled to himself and dropped his pack before heading over towards the communal area to see who was up and about, and luckily she was there.
The two had a brief exchange where he thanked her for the treat and she mentioned it was for his birthday. Right, it was the end of November wasn’t it? Not that he had celebrated the occasion in decades anyways. It was just another day as far as he was concerned, but he also hadn’t realized it was already almost December. This also meant that he had definitely missed her birthday as well, which wasn’t unusual for him. A pretty purple seed he had found in his journeys was offered with a belated birthday wish and the two parted ways. A brief, but pleasant exchange.
He was tired, he was dirty, and he was 100% in ‘war mode’ while out here, leaving him oblivious to her body language and tone, and focused only on the task at hand. They had a lot to talk about still, but this was neither the time nor the place for it. Surely she was on the same page.

TT: What was it like seeing Callia?
Tumblr media
Really fucking weird, mostly. She died when he was a baby so he doesn't remember anything about her, and has only seen her in pictures and heard about her in stories. She's a lot more scarred up now than he had seen in the photos, so it was immediately off-putting, especially knowing how she got many of those scars.
So suddenly seeing your mother, but having limited time to communicate, sent him in a spiral of random emotion. Sadness, anger, confusion, and quite a bit of awkwardness even, it was definitely extremely weird for the both of them.
There are plans in place now for the two to hopefully meet up that doesn't involve him traveling into Maldraxxus. So hopefully 'in person' will go over much better.
thanks @saltsparkle

Note
pain we endure. faulty weaponry we do not.
It was just another day in Maldraxxus.
That is to say, there was enough fighting in the realm of eternal combat to satisfy even the most bloodthirsty Azerothian by ‘noon’.
And, due to it being the realm of eternal combat, this meant that there was always equipment to make and mend. As such, rare was the day when the forges of the Seat of the Chosen weren’t constantly belching fire and smoke.
Nixragos may first feel and hear Aren’s approach long before he spoke.
“Fancy seeing you here, warlock,” Aren says as he places down his hammer on the smithing table, next to whatever Nixalegos was working on. The hammer, while always well cared for, had definitely seen much usage in this part of the Shadowlands, judging by the scuffs and scrapes it now wore.
“Mind if I join you?”

Shadowlands Herbs
A brief overview, handwritten in Amelia’s scrawling cursive.
Tumblr media
Rising Glory- Rising Glory is an herb native to the realm of Bastion. It grows throughout the realm, though the most bountiful stashes can be found in more mountainous regions. It is distinguishable by its long, wispy leaves, which bear a silvery sheen atop the blue tint. At the center of the leaves rests an orange pod resembling a flame. Rising Glory can grow to be quite tall, making it easy to spot.
Rising Glory is often used with Vigil’s Torch, due to similarities in their properties. They seem to feed upon each other, working in tandem. Rising Glory, however, cannot be used for anxiety or insomnia. It can, however, be used to treat depression when taken in powdered form. Topically, It can be used to treat muscle stiffness and pain, and promotes the quick healing of open wounds.
Dosage Instructions: Powdered herb- 20 mg/day.
Marrowroot-  Marrowroot is an herb native to the realm of Maldraxxus. It does not grow well in the desert areas of the realm, and so it may be best to gather from the dense mushroom forests and marshes. It is an herb that lives up to its name most aptly. There is no blossom to collect, as it more resembles a fungus than anything. It is white, with a red center that gives it the appearance of a bone with exposed marrow. Several appendages reach over the ‘marrow’, and these are the plant’s second most distinctive feature.
Marrowroot oil has antiseptic properties, and can be applied to bandages before wrapping a wound to ward off infection. It is a stimulant, filling the ingester with energy and mental alacrity. However, the crash after is unpleasant and patients should be warned before being given Marrowroot. It may be used to treat cold, flu, and respiratory allergies when taken orally (syrup is best for this, as the plant matter tastes vile). On its own, Marrowroot may cause shortness of breath, but combining with Death Blossom can cause dangerous pulmonary effects.
Dosage Instructions- Syrup: 5 mL every six hours for cold or flu symptoms.
Vigil’s Touch- Vigil’s Touch is an herb native to the realm of Ardenweald. It grows throughout the forest in high quantities. It is distinguishable by its thin silver stalk, paper-thin leaves, and vivid orange petals. The blossom glows with magic, and grows to resemble a flame, giving it its name.
Vigil’s Torch on its own can be used as a remedy for anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain, as well as promoting focus and warding off illness. It is easiest to consume in syrup, tonic, or tea. Be cautious when mixing with other herbs, as it tends to bolster their effects. Be especially cautious when using with Widowbloom, due to the latter’s toxicity. Vigil’s Torch is also useful in warding off dark magics, and may be burned in incense for this purpose.
Dosage Instructions- Syrup: 10 drops under the tongue. Hold for thirty seconds and swallow. Repeat as needed. Tonic: 1 cup as needed.
Widowbloom- Widowbloom is an herb native to the realm of Revendreth. It grows in shadowy and damp locations, which may make it tricky to find. It is distinguishable by its thick dry stalk, its multiple blossoms, and the white pouch shape the blossoms grow in. The seeds inside these frilly pouches are always a deep crimson, reminiscent of pomegranate seeds.
Widowbloom is highly toxic, with a variety of physical and psychological effects associated with its use. Oral ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, extreme pain, seizure, paranoia, hallucination, and in extreme cases, death. Physical contact with the root or oils may cause painful blistering around the contact area. Flush eyes or skin thoroughly upon handling, and treat oral consumption with activated charcoal, or with 2 tsp of powdered Death Blossom to neutralize.
Despite its toxicity, Widowbloom can be used in extremely low doses to promote alertness and concentration. Never use the root for this purpose. Instead, hot water infusions can be made of the petals.
Dosage Instructions- Infusion: 5 drops/day.
Death Blossom- Death Blossom is an herb native to the Shadowlands, growing across multiple realms and in a variety of locations. It is in relatively abundant supply, and as such is easily accessible to those within the Shadowlands. It is distinguished by a thick hairless stalk, iridescent petals (though color may change regionally), and the unique butterfly shape of its blossom.
May be orally administered via tincture, tea, or powder as a pain reliever, antibiotic, or as an antidote with a remarkably wide range of use. May also be used topically in ointment form as a local numbing agent and antiseptic. Evidence suggests that this method may reduce healing time due to the herb’s magical nature. Use in oil will numb the skin, but also poses risk of causing a painful rash, and should be avoided in most cases. The exception is for venomous bites, in which case an oil can be applied directly to the wound as an antivenom.
Alchemically, Death Blossom may be used to increase the properties of other herbs, and is used on its own in an array of healing potions. Oral use with Marrowroot may cause rapid and irregular heartbeat as well as a shallowness of breath.
Dosage Instructions- Tincture: 1-3 tbs/day depending on weight. Powdered herb: 1-2 grams depending on weight.
*Nightshade- Nightshade is found in all realms of the Shadowlands, including, according to reports, the Maw. It is somewhat uncommon, and its variations in color make it tricky to track down. The plant is about knee-height for an average-sized human, with jagged-edged leaves that sprout from the hairless stem. The blossoms are large, pointed at their base and open at the top. The petals curl downwards, revealing a rose-like center. These blossoms release magical energy in a faint pillar from their centers.
Nightshade taken orally can alleviate allergy symptoms, help with menstural cramping, and soothe motion sickness. However, it is toxic, should not be taken as a first option, and should not be taken in large doses. Its relative rarity makes it an unsustainable treatment for the long-term, especially when other herbs exist within the Shadowlands that could alleviate the same symptoms.
Symptoms of Nightshade poisoning are as follows: Fever, Stomach pain, pupil dilation, dry mouth, vomiting, hallucination, partial or full paralysis, death.
Dosage- Decoction of root: 3 mL/day
(*Nightshade is a real OOC plant type. While some forms of Nightshade are totally benign, like tomatoes, others, like Black Nightshade, can kill you. Please don’t take Black Nightshade, or any plant you don’t know the risks of ingesting. These are all just headcanons! Obviously the herbs don’t have definitive IC medical purposes!)
